MYRTLE BEACH GOLF
Better Than Ever Turn back the clock 30 years to the late 1980’s in Myrtle Beach. Things looked a lot different around town, and the golf scene barely resembles what it does today. Some of you reading this were around in those days, and can attest to the change. As I turned 40 this year, I have found that life is constantly changing, personally and most notably to me are the changes to my beltline and hairline. The Myrtle Beach area golf industry is no exception to this evolution. In the year 2018, we saw a lot of updates and change, made in a collaborative effort to improve our product to our guests.
the sod in the Southeast US. Courses were able to patch in sod in areas of fairways, rough, and approaches where the grass coverage was thin. And finally, courses were able to complete renovation and beautification work to their clubhouses, with new paint, carpet or furniture. New golf carts, some with newer and more upgraded creature comforts, can be found at over a dozen courses. The collaboration between golf courses and golf package provider has never been stronger. There are some great golf packages out
The collaboration between golf courses and golf package providers has never been stronger. New greens are the headline grabber, and with good reason. The newer forms of Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grasses are a testament to the study and history of a talented and constantly evolving community of golf agronomists. These are the men and women who I used to try to sit next to in Biology and Chemistry class. Myrtle Beach has embraced these newer products, and the benefit is being passed along to our visiting golfers. There have been other improvements this year as well, besides just the installation of new greens at 9 area courses. With the sand traps, we saw re-nourishment of sand, reshaping, and installation of new and better drainage. Another area where we saw major upgrades, were fairways and approaches to the green. Hundreds of pallets of sod were delivered to the area this summer. If you were unable to re-sod your back yard, it was probably because we had all 10 On The Green Magazine
there in 2019, for both tee times as well as tee times and lodging. You can find the best package companies over the next few pages. We’ve taken the time to only spotlight the best in-market teams. We highly recommend all of them; they are the cream of the crop. Myrtle Beach through the years, has always been the reliable destination, were you knew what you were going to get. With several million dollars’ worth of upgrades, coming back to Myrtle Beach is going to feel like when you traded in your first jalopy for your first new car. Or perhaps it may be more similar to that feeling you used to get as a kid walking down the stairs on Christmas morning. Either way, when you return to Myrtle Beach in 2019, you are going to be happy with the improvements. We hope you find some great information in this year’s issue, and look forward to seeing you around town and in the fairway.

In Depth Look at the Greens:
Making a Case With all of the major renovation and work done in Myrtle Beach in the year 2018, we decided to take an in-depth look at the 2 new types of Bermuda grass being introduced to the Myrtle Beach area. We have put together a case for each, focusing on the highlights and strengths of each type. Here is what we discovered: see which one you think makes the strongest case. CHAMPION BERMUDA: Close Mowing - has exceptional tolerance of close mowing, does not thin-out to expose the ground even when mowed at 1/10 of an inch. Shade Tolerance - maintains very high density even in partial shade. Wear Tolerance - maintains very high density at the lowest mowing heights which gives it exceptional wear tolerance. Rapid Recovery - makes a profusion of lateral stems which provides very rapid recovery from injury, even at the lowest mowing heights. Slow Vertical Growth - it’s growth habit is primarily horizontal with very slow vertical growth which gives a more consistent putting surface.
14 On The Green Magazine
Better Cold Stress Resistance - survives and recovers from sub-freezing temperatures at a very high level. Encroachment Resistance has very dense and aggressive lateral growth which allows it to dominate other grasses at greens heights.
SUNDAY BERMUDA: Manages Like A Dwarf- has exceptional tolerance of close mowing, does not thin-out to expose the ground even when mowed at 1/10 of an inch. Close Mowing - like Champion, can also be mowed at 1/10 of an inch, making for a fast and consistent surface. Massive Root System - protects against the winter elements. A deep, established root system will also allow water necessary for growth. Consistent Color - keeps the entire putting surface at the same color, providing a pure visual. This also enables easier reading of undulation and breaks. Uniform Grain- Grain refers to a condition when
www.onthegreenmagazine.com
turfgrass plants lie horizontally in one or more directions. The result is a nonuniform green with nonuniform putting speed. Putting “with the grain” results in significantly longer ball rolls than putting “against the grain.” Uniform grain will result in more consistent putts across the entire putting surface, regardless of the direction of the putt. Stimpmeter of 11+ - We all like to see big numbers on the Stimp (whether we can actually deal with them or not), and this grass can deliver. Genetic Stability - Since it’s development in the mid 80’s in Alabama, Sunday has not seen any mutations over the last 26 years.

Ed Bullock
Larry Leagans
Ed Bullock had a good job at Western Electric but he wasn’t happy. The North Carolina native told his boss he was quitting and the reason was simple: “This job gives me a headache - I’d rather play golf the rest of my life,” Bullock said. His avocation became his occupation and his impact on the Myrtle Beach golf market was profound. He moved to the area to become the construction supervisor at The Surf Club, Myrtle Beach’s third course, before taking over as head pro, working at the esteemed layout from 1959-1972. Bullock left the Surf Club for a similar challenge at an even higher profile facility, overseeing construction and eventually assuming the mantle of head pro at Myrtle Beach National, where he worked until his 1985 retirement. He worked tirelessly to promote the Grand Strand as a golf destination and it was once said of Bullock, “He is one of those people we should thank every time anybody shows up at a Grand Strand course.” Known for his biting wit, Bullock was nicknamed the “Gentle Curmudgeon.” He was enshrined into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named a life member of the PGA in 1990.
16 On The Green Magazine
In 1964 Larry joined the United States Air Force. For four years he was stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB where he served our nation and developed a deep affection for the South Carolina coast. While serving, he worked part-time at the Thunderbird Motor Inn and upon departing the Air Force became a full-time employee. Larry developed a keen interest in facility management and was hired as general manager of Cabana Terrace Motor Inn in 1971, where he worked for the next 14 years. He quickly learned the golf package was instrumental to the success of the Myrtle Beach tourism industry and leased Eagle Nest Golf Club, applying his expertise to improve the quality and reputation of the layout over the next 20 years. As a board member of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday for more than 20 years, Larry was dedicated to marketing the golf package, serving as secretary, vice president and president. Also a member of the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association, he became president and was instrumental in developing numerous initiatives to promote the golf industry. Additionally, Larry served as a charter board member of the Grand Strand Tee Time Network and as vice president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. His delight in promoting the game lifted the golf industry and public appreciation of Myrtle Beach golf, one player at a time.

The Best Of
Myrtle Beach Tidewater Golf Club
Established in the fall of 2012, The Best of Myrtle Beach Golf Group consists of 12 award-winning golf courses along the Grand Strand from Shallotte, North Carolina to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. This remarkable group of courses includes five “Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses in America.” With an abundance of marsh front and Intracoastal Waterway holes, you will experience the unique coastal vistas and charm that the region is renowned for. For dramatic beauty and world class playability, there is no finer selection of golf courses than those listed below. Barefoot - Love Course
Barefoot - Norman Course
ARROWHEAD GOLF COURSE South Carolina’s “1998 Golf Course of the Year.” Designers Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have sculpted Arrowhead’s 27-hole complex into three aesthetic masterpieces. The Lakes, features dramatically sloping fairways and strategically placed water hazards; The Cypress, gently traces the outskirts of a pristine Carolina hardwood wetland; and The Waterway wide fairways with dramatic holes along the high bluffs of the Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead is located in Myrtle Beach just five minutes from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. BAREFOOT RESORT In the fall of 2014 the Golf Channel deemed the Barefoot Resort & Golf location as the “perfect fit” for their hit reality TV show “Big Break” because of their central location, infrastructure, quality of product and history. With the Dye Course, Pete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever. Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this visually stunning design is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name.
Barefoot - Dye Course
The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is routed through a spectacular piece of property in the heart of Barefoot Resort. Like many European courses, the course does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes. It is not a British links course, but rather a classic Lowcountry course, filled with live oaks, pines, sand, natural areas and native grasses. A Carolina native, Davis Love III embraces a tradition of Lowcountry character in his latest design. The Love Course incorporates the recreated ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7. Wide open fairways and generous landing areas set the stage for an unforgettable round of golf.
Barefoot - Fazio Course 18 On The Green Magazine
The Norman Course, Greg Norman’s newest design at Barefoot Resort is unique in many ways. With only 60 acres of mowable grass existing on all 18 holes, Greg uses stunning waste areas and the site’s natural vegetation to frame each hole. The course resembles one found in the deserts of the southwest, without the desert. www.onthegreenmagazine.com

www.MyrtleBeachGolfPackagers.com Shaftesbury Glen
GLENS GROUP Myrtle Beach’s most talked about course, Glen Dornoch is a masterful tribute to the legendary Donald Ross, in a spectacular setting of centuries old live oaks, marsh and Intracoastal Waterway views. Here each hole seems to have been crafted by nature rather than by man. And the three finishing holes are among the world’s best. Architect Clyde Johnston brings back the traditional look at Shaftsbury Glen. You will think of Winged Foot as you play the newest of Myrtle Beach’s championship courses. This beautiful, recently renovated course should be on your must-play list. It’s just 10 minutes from Restaurant Row via Highway 22. CALEDONIA Built upon the former site of a working southern rice plantation, Caledonia has been recognized for its design and incredible beauty. Caledonia was recently ranked #27 in GOLF Magazine’s 2014 “Top 100 You Can Play” and is annually ranked on “America’s 100 Greatest Public courses” list by Golf Digest. The 6,526-yard, par-70 course has been described as having “18 signature holes” with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. TRUE BLUE PLANTATION Ranked in Golf Magazine’s “2014 Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list, True Blue Golf Club represents the class of the expansive golf offerings in and around Myrtle Beach. The dramatic, fun layout is known for its vast fairways, undulating greens and impressive elevation changes. The rolling terrain and native vegetation of this once thriving indigo and rice plantation makes for one of the most spectacular settings in golf.
PRESTWICK COUNTRY CLUB Dense forests of pine are paired with sandy waste areas for a contrast of perfection at Prestwick Country Club. Creating elevations with dune-like berms, stairway bunkers and deep bulkhead protected greens meant moving over 1.3 million cubic yards of earth, but the end product was well-worth it in the end. Streams wander between the holes surrounded by framing lakes and generous landing areas in this Dye masterpiece. BLACKMOOR This spectacular undulating design takes advantage of the natural terrain and beautiful vistas making it a most enjoyable place to play. The design is one that stretches the imagination – almost begging for the untraditional at times. Designer Gary Player was able to use his wisdom and talent to provide a challenging course for the most capable golfer as well as high-handicappers. TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB Nestled like a sleeping giant between the Intracoastal Waterway and Cherry Grove, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Seamlessly marrying the game to its surroundings, architect Ken Tomlinson evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of many Grand Strand golfers.

They operated for years under the popular “Prime Times Signature Courses” brand, and are now rolled in FGI’s emerging Founders Collection portfolio that includes: • King’s North – the most renowned of three Arnold Palmer designs at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club that also includes West Course and SouthCreek, and all of which have been a staple of the Grand Strand golf scene for more than four decades • Pine Lakes Country Club – “The Granddaddy,” Myrtle Beach’s firstever golf club founded in 1927 by the legendary Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America • Grande Dunes Resort Club – Honored in 2001 as “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and most recently a co-host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship. WORLD AMATEUR HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP
Virginian Curtis Henley Wins 34th Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship
Greg Williams Captures Flight Winners’ Playoff at the 2018 World Amateur Handicap Championship On August 31, 2018, Greg Williams of North Augusta, S.C. shot a net 67 (gross 90) to win the Flight Winners’ Playoff at the 35th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Course. Williams emerged from a field of 3,184 golfers and edged second-place finishers Rob Durbin (York, S.C.) and Mark Dey (Decatur, Mich.) by two shots to claim the title of World Champion. Derrick Oyervides (Greer, S.C.) shot a 74 to cruise to a sixstroke win in the gross division, finishing with a five-round total of 363. Bobby Stiffler (Glen Rock, Pa.) who fired a 76 at the Dye Course, was second, while Todd Stires (Murrieta, Ca.) finished third, 11 shots back.
said. “The World Am is golf’s best and most inclusive event, and we enjoyed another outstanding week of competition and camaraderie. We are already looking forward to 2019.” A 72-hole, net stroke play event, golfers were placed into tightly grouped flights based on age, gender and their handicap index. After 72 holes of competition, all flight winners and ties advanced to Friday’s Flight Winners’ Playoff at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Course, an 18-hole shootout that crowned the 2018 World Champion. There were 66 flights in this year’s tournament and 33 Myrtle Beach golf courses hosted tournament play each day. In total, 55 area courses hosted at least one round of the World Am.
Steve Comings (Odenton, Md.) shot a 73 at the Dye Course, finishing with a five-round score of 372, one shot clear of second-place finisher Steve Humphrey (Lexington, Ky.), to win the Senior Gross Division.
Each night players gathered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole, which consumed all 120,000 square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Tournament players and a guest enjoyed free food and drinks, a 70-exhibitor golf expo, live entertainment, demo areas, celebrity appearances and more.
By virtue of winning the gross divisions, Oyervides and Comings won all expenses-paid trips to compete in the Hainan Amateur in the Yangpu Economic Development Zone in China in November.
Golf Channel’s popular Morning Drive program provided live coverage of the tournament on Thursday and Friday mornings, giving viewers an up close look at the event and the World Championship Playoff.
John Long (Allen, Tx.) and Ted Johnston (McKinney, Tx.) combined to win the Club Choice Ireland Pairs Competition, shooting a combined, net team score of 150. By virtue of winning, Long and Johnston won a six-night, five-round trip to Ireland.
The PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, the world’s largest single site tournament, is a Golf Tourism Solutions event. The 2019 World Am will be played August 26-30.

Short Wedge Shots Stack it and Stick it! There are very few feelings in a round of golf better than crushing a drive right down the middle of the fairway! There is almost no worse a feeling on the golf course than when you follow up that great drive with a horrendous short wedge shot! We all know the one. You’ve either laid the sod over your own ball or skulled the ball so horribly you send it sailing over the green and out of bounds. Not only does this terrible short wedge shot squander your great drive and turn birdie into double, it is usually followed by a playing competitor’s snickers or the inevitable “Touch em’ All!” quote we all love. Well fear not because with this simple setup tip I hope that you never have to suffer from another awful short wedge shot again.
shoulders and spine angle level and allows for a clean descending strike of the golf ball. This type of setup is where the term “stack” comes from as you can see that it appears that my weight is stacked on my left side from head to front foot. What you don’t want to do is slide your hips forward to move your weight to your front foot because as you can see in (picture 2) that causes my spine to tilt backward and my shoulders up. This creates an upward swing path at the bottom. This is the position that many golfers set up in and this is the reason for so many fat and thin wedge shots.
By presetting your weight on your front foot it allows for the center of your body to be ahead Most golfers who have played the game of the ball at impact without having to transfer for awhile have heard of the “stack and tilt” your weight from back foot to front foot as you method of swinging. The Father & Son Team Classic is a two person team, 54-hole event that takes place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina every July. The event is not just for Fathers and Sons, but rather for all relationships so long as there is a generational gap. For example, Father & Son, Uncle & Nephew, Grandfather & Grandson, and more combinations are encouraged.
The Parent Child Team Classic is similar to the Father & Son Team Classic but incorporates all other relationships, such as mother and daughter or mother and son. For example, Grandfather & Granddaughter, Aunt & Niece, Mother & Son-In-Law, and more combinations are encouraged.

This is important because the club head is more behind the body for a low swinger and the club head needs to get back in front of the player more so than a high swinger would need to.
The first one is a high swing in which the left arm for a right handed golfer works away from them on the takeaway (Image 1), up in the air at the top of the backswing producing a left arm that works above the shoulder turn (Image 2). The low swing would tend to be more consistent and produce a straighter ball flight. The problem with the high swing for most amateurs I see is that they don’t shallow the club in the transition and this results in a choppy outside-in swing that produces a variety of bad shots. The reason they don’t shallow the club is because they use their arms to initiate the downswing resulting in the shaft coming down too steep and from the outside.
Examples of high swingers would be Bubba Watson, Jordan Speith, Justin Thomas. Examples of low swingers would be Charley Hoffman, Jason Dufner, and Matt Kuchar.
In order for a high swing to work the arms must fall back down on the downswing by initiating the downswing with the legs to create some
