The Show That Started It All THE GRAND STRAND ATTRACTION THAT CHANGED THE FACE OF THE BEACH FOREVER: OVER THREE DECADES OF WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT FROM THE CAROLINA OPRY
O
n June 2, 1986, when Calvin Gilmore opened his doors to the first paying customers of The Carolina Opry, few locals or vacationers knew what to expect. Another country bar? Maybe Hee Haw at the beach? What they got was a breath of fresh air. A sensational show in a cool theater. The kind of show you could take your kids or your grandmother to — but it also blew back the hair of your hard-to-please brother-in-law from New York. By late summer, the word had gotten around that something spectacular was happening at The Carolina Opry, and the long line of patrons snaked out the door and around the building. Tour buses stood bumper to bumper. Gilmore had only 12 entertainers and musicians to work with, himself among the number, but they packed a wallop. Eight years later, the dam broke. Other shows rushed to join The Carolina Opry's success. The Dixie Stampede (now Pirate's Voyage) joined his prime site in Myrtle Beach. The investment group that created the Alabama Theater used Gilmore's architect and his blueprints to build a theater. Burroughs and Chapin planned an entertainment complex that they hoped would corner the whole market with numerous shows. Nearly thirty five years later, The Carolina Opry remains one of the top shows in the market and Gilmore stands alone as a producer, performer and entrepreneur. Though some have survived, few have managed to create the high-quality production standard or the 14 On The Beach magazine
customer loyalty of The Carolina Opry Theater. Why? Well, maybe because the cook is in the kitchen. The Carolina Opry is one of the few shows to be written, produced, and directed right here in Myrtle Beach by the onsite owner. And it may be worth noting that it is owned entirely by the Gilmore family. The inauguration and phenomenal success of The Carolina Opry Christmas Special (“The Christmas Show of the South”) made Myrtle Beach a year-round destination. Many may have forgotten that thirty years ago Myrtle Beach rolled up the sidewalks after Labor Day, it was hard to find a restaurant open for lunch in December. Then the Christmas tour buses began to roll to The Carolina Opry Christmas Special. Families from throughout the region came to Myrtle Beach in December just to see the show. Hotels and restaurants not only opened — they filled. And a new seasonal market was born. And along the way, spurred on by the entertainment boom that Gilmore inspired, the Grand Strand experienced exponential growth. The buzz brought heavy hitters like Marriott, Hard Rock Café and Medieval Times to the banquet table. Gilmore himself has performed numerous times on the Grand Ole Opry, was recognized for his accomplishments by the South Carolina state senate and was bestowed the Palmetto Patriot award. His shows stand alone on the Grand Strand with major media accolades including NBC Nightly News, USA Today, CNN, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times, Detroit Free Press, and a host of others. The
www.OnTheBeachMagazine.com
Huffington Post recently noted that Gilmore’s shows featured “World-Class entertainers that blew usaway. . . literally!” Gilmore’s shows are the only to have won every major South Carolina tourism award, including the coveted South Carolina Governor’s Cup and Most Outstanding Attraction and are the only shows to be voted #1 for 32 years. The 34th season at The Carolina Opry Theater brings a level of production diversity never seen in Myrtle Beach. The theater will host 5 original productions and a celebrity concert series: • The iconic Carolina Opry show features over 35 of the nation’s most talented musicians, singers, dancers and comedians. Among them are hot NEW male vocalists Delvin Choice of NBC’s The Voice and 19-year old Rory John Zak, national recording artist Brad Long, hip-hop cloggers All That! (famous from NBC’s America’s Got Talent), powerhouse vocalists Christie Templeton, Tangena Church and Chas Croft Sorrells, fiddling champion Trent Wideman and bluegrass virtuoso Gary Brown. • Time Warp, featuring the same award-winning cast as The Carolina Opry, as well as the same multi-million dollar laser light show that travels with Pink Floyd—a virtual tour of the best music of 60s, 70s and 80s, joined with dance, comedy and multimedia. •
their own matinee. Illusionists, The Wagsters, add to the fun. • Pure Magic, Gilmore’s newest production, is a show in which The Wagsters bring magic, amazement, comedy and drama together with card tricks, disappearing acts and even some silly sleight of hand. • The beloved Carolina Opry Christmas Special, “The Christmas Show of the South”, is an ironclad tradition for so many thousands of families on the eastern seaboard that the Sun-News dubbed Gilmore “Father Christmas.” • On select Sunday evenings Gilmore presents the Myrtle Beach Performing Arts Series, featuring headlining artists such as America, Kansas, Travis Tritt, Jungle Jack Hanna and more! If the Carolina Opry Theater doesn’t have what you want, then you may need to check your pulse! You know the old saying: There's nothing like an original. You can see Gilmore’s shows live nightly at 7:00pm in The Carolina Opry Theater, with The Carolina Opry and Time Warp on rotating nights. Four Decades Three Generations Two Brothers
ONE SWEET
STORY Would you like to enjoy the softer side of life where you can be entertained rather than having to entertain? Stop by Duplin Winery and discover the slower pace of the south and relax with a glass of sweet, southern wine. But before you visit, we’d love to share our story with you. It’s a tale of two brothers, their families and what makes our sweet, southern Muscadine wine stand out from all others.
How does one tell a story about a vineyard that unexpectedly grew into something far beyond the original expectations? In what way can we properly recount the memories and sacrifices of a family to be an inspiration to all, including future generations? By telling their story, from the beginning. In a small, rural town in North Carolina in the early 1970s, two brothers sat slowly rocking on their porch, pondering new ways to provide for their families. Those brothers, Dan and David Fussell Sr., decided to take a chance on growing Muscadine grapes after discovering a big city winery in New York would pay $350 for a ton of grapes. Teaming up with their father, known to all as Big D, they invested and put everything they had into building vineyards they hoped would produce the South’s sweetest After being reassured that both items grapes. were for their brand new winery and not Four years passed and just before the for what he was implicating, they left first harvest, the grape prices fell to less with the needed materials. than half the original price. Those two country boys Dan and David now from the south sold their wondered with dismay, NEVER FORGET first batch of wine “what in the world WHERE YOU COME FROM. bottled in mason jars. are we country ALWAYS REMEMBER WHO YOU It was 1976. boys going to do ARE. AND TREAT PEOPLE RIGHT, Fast-forward to with a bunch of over forty years JUST LIKE YOU WANT TO grapes?” later. Two brothers BE TREATED. They decided to from the next genmake wine! With eration are rocking experimentation “Big D” on a porch, recalland determinaDaniel Jerome Fussell, Sr. ing their childhood tion, they taught Co-Founder & First CEO, and the early years of themselves how to Duplin Winery Duplin Winery. But this coax the sweet, natural porch is in North Myrtle flavor from the Muscadine Beach, SC at the new winery they grape. But now the brothers had worked hard to open in the summer needed to find a way to bottle their wine of 2015. and discovered the price of wine bottles was far too high for them to afford. Refusing to be discouraged, the brothers sauntered into their local hardware store in Rose Hill and headed straight for the owner. “We need a bunch a mason jars and some more sugar,” they declared. Skeptical, the owner raised an eyebrow, laughed and said “Uh-huh, and just what are you boys planning to make with sugar and mason jars?”
“
“
These brothers, Dave Fussell Jr. and Jonathan Fussell, now run the family business allowing their father and uncle to finally relax and enjoy the sweeter side of life. Dave and Jonathan’s childhood memories are filled with watching their grandfather, father and uncle give everything they had to make Duplin Winery successful for their families; while also delivering a delicious, sweet wine that people would love. Still relaxing on the porch, a big grin grows on Jonathan’s face, drawing the attention of his older brother. Jonathan turns to his big brother and says, “I tell you what, we’ve been so lucky and so blessed. But, the best thing I like to remember is what Big D always said was most important, make the pretty girls smile.” Dave glances over at his brother and does what he normally does, corrects him. “No, that’s… make sweet wines that make the pretty girls smile. To make WIIIIINES,” he drawls out. Dave shakes his head with a laugh and continues, “Big D and Dad always said, ‘Never forget where you come from. Always remember who you are. And treat people right, just like you want to be treated. And we’re going to keep on doing j u s t that.” Jonathan takes a sip of his wine
and nods in agreement; thinking how far they have come. The wooden homemade grape presses, designed and built by Dan Fussell, Jr have long since been replaced with four, state of the art bladder presses, handling over 5,000 tons of grapes per season. The buckets and plastic tanks for storing wine now pale in comparison to the 1.75-million-gallon capacity housed in looming stainless steel tanks in the facility in Rose Hill, NC and the hand bottling lines of yesteryear sit quietly in the corner beyond the rhythmic hums of lines producing over 40,000 bottles of wine each day. Now that we’ve shared our tale, we would love for you to visit us at either of our retail locations in person, so we can treat you like our family. Enjoy a unique wine tasting unlike any other you’ve ever experienced, there’s no pinky raisin’ allowed. Let us entertain you with funny stories, anecdotes and interesting facts about the family history and the wines. See wine being bottled by hand, just like Dan and David Sr. did back in the day. Take a troll through the beautiful building and find unique gifts and accessories, relax on the porch and enjoy live music during the summer. You may even get a hug from Dave or Jonathan if they are still sitting there. We’re located between Barefoot Landing and Alligator Adventure on highway 17.
Visit the original location in Rose Hill, NC, where the story began. We’ll be waiting for you. Stop by, say hello and discover why Life is Sweeter with Duplin. For more information, give us a call at 800-774-9634 or visit us at duplinwinery.com.
