60 Years And Going Strong The Myrtle Beach Speedway, originally named Rambi Raceway, was built in 1958 and is located on U.S. Route 501 near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Rambi stands for “Racing Association of Myrtle Beach Inc.” The speedway is a semi-banked asphalt oval track that spans 0.538 miles (0.866 km). The NASCAR Cup series competed at the Speedway from 1958 through 1965. The NASCAR Busch Series (now the Xfinity Series) raced at Myrtle Beach Speedway from 1988 to 2000. Currently the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race on Saturday nights from late February through November. The track also runs various other classes of racing including Late Model Charger, Super Trucks and Mini Stocks. The speedway is home of the Myrtle Beach 400, IceBreaker 200, NASCAR Racing Experience, Monster Jam, NOPI Nationals and Horry County Fair with recent additions of Wheels of Destruction Thrill Show and the Myrtle Beach BikeFest. Over the years, Myrtle Beach Speedway has been the training grounds for some of NASCAR’s biggest stars including Dale Earnhardt Jr. (former late model stock car competitor) and Jeff Gordon (former Busch Series track record holder). All four generations of Pettys (Lee, Richard, Kyle, and Adam) and three generations of Earnhardts (Ralph, Dale Sr., and Dale Jr./Kelley/ L.W. Miller III) have taken a green flag around the asphalt oval that spans 0.538 miles (0.866 km).
HISTORY Rambi Raceway opened as a dirt track in 1958. Nick Lucas bought the track in 1968, paving it in 1974. Billy Hardee became a co-owner in 1987. A Busch Series race in 2000 was the last major NASCAR event at the track. By 2011, the NASCAR All-American Whelen LateModel Series was the highest level of racing at the track. In a deal that closed April, 2012, Speedway Group Inc. bought the facility, including 48 acres. Robert J. Lutz, one of the new owners, said Lt. Gov. André Bauer arranged for the deal to take place. Bauer said he wanted the track to help improve Myrtle Beach’s economy with new events. Upgrades to the track are planned, and plans call for the NASCAR Racing Experience to attract drivers and tourists. One goal is another top-level race. After merging the two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours at the end of the 2016 season, beginning in 2017, the newly unified tour started its season in Myrtle Beach. The track will again host the season opener in 2018.
TRACK FACTS: • Track Length: 0.538 mile • Degree of banking: 13 degrees in turns 1-2 • Degree of banking: 10 degrees in turns 3-4 • Degree of front stretch banking 9 degrees • Seat Capacity: Approx. 9,000 • Length of pit road 1804 ft. • 44 pit boxes

FOUR DECADES
THREE GENERATIONS
TWO BROTHERS
ONE
SWEET STORY Would you like to enjoy the softer side of life where you can be entertained rather than having to entertain? Stop by Duplin Winery and discover the slower pace of the south and relax with a glass of sweet, southern wine. But before you visit, we’d love to share our story with you. It’s a tale of two brothers, their families and what makes our sweet, southern Muscadine wine stand out from all others.
ow does one tell a story about a vineyard that unexpectedly grew into something far beyond the original expectations? In what way can we properly recount the memories and sacrifices of a family to be an inspiration to all, including future generations? By telling their story, from the beginning. In a small, rural town in North Carolina in the early 1970s, two brothers sat slowly rocking on their porch, pondering new ways to provide for their families. Those brothers, Dan and David Fussell Sr., decided to take a chance on growing Muscadine grapes after discovering a big city winery in New York would pay $350 for a ton of grapes. Teaming up with their father, known to all as Big D, they invested and put everything they had into building vineyards they hoped would produce the South’s sweetest grapes. Four years passed and just before the first harvest, the grape prices fell to less than half the original price. Dan and David now wondered with dismay, “what in the world are we country boys going to do with a bunch of grapes?” They decided to make wine!
With experimentation and determination, they taught themselves how to coax the sweet, natural flavor from the Muscadine grape. But now the brothers needed to find a way to bottle their wine and discovered the price of wine bottles was far too high for them to afford. Refusing to be discouraged, the brothers sauntered into their local hardware store in Rose Hill and headed straight for the owner. “We need a bunch a mason jars and some more sugar,” they declared. Skeptical, the owner raised an eyebrow, laughed and said “Uh-huh, and just what are you boys planning to make with sugar and mason jars?” After being reassured that both items were for their brand new winery and not for what he was implicating, they left with the needed materials.

“
Jonathan takes a sip of his wine and nods in agreement; thinking how far they have come. The wooden homemade grape presses, designed and built by Dan Fussell, Jr have long since been replaced with four, state of the art bladder presses, handling over 5,000 tons of grapes per season. The buckets and plastic tanks for storing wine now pale in comparison to the 1.4 -million-gallon capacity housed in looming stainless steel tanks in the facility in Rose Hill, NC and the hand bottling lines of yesteryear sit quietly in the corner beyond the rhythmic hums of lines producing 33,600 bottles of wine each day. Now that we’ve shared our tale, we would love for you to visit us at either of our retail
locations in person, so we can treat you like our family. Enjoy a unique wine tasting unlike any other you’ve ever experienced, there’s no pinky raisin’ allowed. Let us entertain you with funny stories, anecdotes and interesting facts about the family history and the wines. See wine being bottled by hand, just like Dan and David Sr. did back in the day. Take a troll through the beautiful building and find unique gifts and accessories, relax on the porch and enjoy live music during the summer. You may even get a hug from Dave or Jonathan if they are still sitting there. We’re located between Barefoot Landing and Alligator Adventure on highway 17. Visit the original location in Rose Hill, NC, where
the story began. We’ll be waiting for you. Stop by, say hello and discover why Life is Sweeter with Duplin. For more information, give us a call at 800-774-9634 or visit us at duplinwinery.com.
Fussell Family Stories
Dave and Jonathan share stories about their youth, including recounting mishaps that include how a wine tank blew up and the numerous times their father, David Sr. fired both of them. You don’t want to miss their entertaining recollections of growing up in the winery.

CONWAY
Historic Conway A mere 12 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway is a jewel of “Americana.” Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson’s Township Scheme. It was laid out on a riverbluff in the center of what became Horry County. Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and small engagements were fought near Kingston. Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox, had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River. After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain’s King George II. The County’s name was changed to Horry (pronounced O-Ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801 and a courthouse was established in Kingston. Kingston’s name was later changed to Conwayborough for General Robert Conway.
