Myrtle Beach Golf Course Renovations By Jason Himmelsbach

Myrtlewood Palmetto Course Myrtlewood Golf Club’s Palmetto Course completed a summer renovation, including the installation of new greens and a comprehensive bunker refurbishment project. The popular layout reopened to the public on September 20, 2019. The course installed new Sunday Bermuda greens and the putting surfaces were restored to their original dimensions, which allowed the course to pick up an additional 28,000 square feet of green space. “There’s going to be a lot more pin

Over time, the Palmetto Course’s bunkers had expanded and the sand lines were lost to the point where the majority of the sand traps were identical in shape. “We took some bunkers out, and we’ve added a couple bunkers,” Schlegel said. “Some of the fairway bunkers, we let them jut into the line of play a little bit more, put them on a little bit more on angle, and changed elevations slightly. With this expansion, a lot more variety on approach shots was added.” Myrtle Beach’s summer weather has provided an ideal incubator for the Sunday Bermuda, which will provide a truer roll and allow the greens to be mowed at a lower height. A Day In The Life Of A Myrtle Beach Golf Cart Attendant By Jason Himmelsbach

They are the first person you meet when you arrive at the course, and pull up to the bag drop area. They come in all ages and shapes, and unload your bags from your car with a smile or funny ice-breaker. I recently interviewed a 30 year bag attendant veteran, to get a true idea of what his duties include, and how his day unfolds. • 3:00 AM: Alarm clock rings, another early morning start. Got to get dressed and leave my house by 3:30 to get to the course by 4:00 am. Coffee is king at this time. • 4:00 AM: Arrive at the course, unlock main gates and then cart barn. Start pulling up the carts, 100 golfers scheduled to play today. Each cart takes about 2 minutes to pull up and park in straight lines in the bag drop area. It’s still pretty dark at 4:00 am. • 6:00 AM: After a refill of coffee, all the carts are pulled up and now waiting on the first guests to arrive. Beautiful sunrise, and first tee time is 7:25 AM, so need to be ready for any early arrivals. Put the Stars and Stripes up the flag pole. • 8:00 AM: Morning rush is in full swing. Unloading bags from the cars, treating each bag as if it was my own. Neat and precise is the name of the game. Loading drivers and riders, do you want your irons facing in or out? Don’t forget that towel that fell off your bag. • 10:00 AM: Morning groups are all on the course. Time for a small break, count my tips, and then off to the course to check water coolers and bathrooms. • 12:00 PM: Carts begin to come in from morning rounds. Have time to clean a few before the first afternoon players begin to arrive. Not as many rounds this afternoon, so should be able to get some lunch in at some point, stomach is rumbling. 16 On The Green magazine

• 2:00 PM: Afternoon players are now all on the course. After a quick lunch, it is time to pick the driving range. Twenty-three bags were hit (about 30-40 balls per bag), so quite a bit of ball picking in store. After picking the balls, they need to be washed and then re-bagged and taken back up to the pro shop. • 4:00 PM: Had a flat tire on the 13th hole. Had to bring a new cart out to the guest, and then replace tire and drive other cart back to the barn. Refilled water coolers while I was out, so one less thing to do before closing time. • 6:00 PM: A few more carts to come in, looking like an early night. Most working days end around the time the sun goes down. Just a few more carts to wash and park. Then lock up the bathrooms out on the course and take clubhouse trash to the dumpster. Last thing is to lower and put away the flags from the flag pole. • 7:30 PM: Last cart is in, finally time to clock out, lock up and head home. Long hours and hard work are a summation of this job. He told me working with the customer is the best part. So the next time when you pull in, remember a buck or two for the bag guy (was told that is the industry standard).

FGI made its initial splash in 2014 with its acquisition of eight renowned courses – including TPC Myrtle Beach, host of the 2000 Senior Tour Championship, and the Grand Strand’s only design rated 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play”; and World Tour Golf Links, 2004 recipient of “Course of the Year” honors by the National Golf Course Owners Association.

• Pine Lakes Country Club – “The Granddaddy,” Myrtle Beach’s firstever golf club founded in 1927 by the legendary Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America

TPC Myrtle Beach and World Tour were joined by Aberdeen Country Club, Burning Ridge Golf Club, Colonial Charters Golf Club, Founders Club at Pawleys Island, Indian Wells Golf Club and River Hills Golf & Country

• Grande Dunes Resort Club – Honored in 2001 as “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and most recently a co-host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship.

But as quickly as FGI emerged with these eight designs, its “game-changing” moment came in 2015 when it reached agreement with National Golf Management to acquire the Myrtle Beach golf industry’s most established group of courses, loyalty programs and reservation services. They operated for years under the popular “Prime Times Signature Courses” brand, and are now rolled in FGI’s emerging Founders Collection portfolio that includes:

Altogether, the Founders Collection spotlights signature designs from the likes of industry legends Jack Nicklaus (Long Bay, Pawleys Plantation), Arnold Palmer (Myrtle Beach National) and Tom Fazio (TPC Myrtle Beach) … 14 recipients of four or more stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” … and local, statewide and national “Golf Course of the Year” accolades among many of its www.onthegreenmagazine.com

The Founders Collection courses are now the featured courses of the Prime Times Signature Card, a loyalty program that for years has rewarded regular players of its courses with the Grand Strand’s lowest available rates – in addition to complimentary rounds earned with frequent play. Myrtle Beach’s First Course

PINE LAKES Pine Lakes Country Club is one of golf ’s American treasures. Designed by the legendary Robert White, and the first golf course on the Grand Strand, it’s known as “The Granddaddy.” Extensive renovations in 2009 restored the course to one of the best in the area, bringing you back to the glory days of golf course design. As one of the only par-70 layouts in the area, Pine Lakes features a back 9 that tests from any length when you factor incoming winds from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The history and traditions of Pine Lakes offer an experience golfers shouldn’t pass up. Make your next round memorable, book your tee time at Pine Lakes.

LONG BAY Set just outside the heart of Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Golf Club blends the feel of East and West Coast play, starting with the environment designed by The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus. Dogwoods, pines and maples sit along the course as crystal-blue streams cut through several holes. Beyond the course’s enchantment, players must navigate a variety of bunker styles, shallow greens and considerable elevation changes. It’s clear Nicklaus wasn’t intending Long Bay to be a relative walk in the park – even if at times that’s exactly where you believe you are. Make your next round memorable, book your tee time at Long Bay.

Former host of the

Senior Tour Championship

TPC MYRTLE BEACH Weaving through a peaceful setting of towering pines and natural wetlands, TPC Myrtle Beach is the only course on the Grand Strand to have been awarded 5 stars by Golf Digest. The tour-caliber course has proven to be a worthy challenge for even the world’s top players, yet it provides a fair and enjoyable test for golfers of all abilities. While golf greats like Tom Watson, Raymond Floyd and Tom Kite may have competed here during the Senior Tour Championship, any golfer today can experience the luxurious, professional and modern layout of TPC Myrtle Beach. WORLD TOUR GOLF LINKS Imagine testing your skills on the same holes the masters have played for decades. World Tour Golf Links transports golfers across the scenic Carolina landscape to a world most only dream about. Play Augusta National’s “Amen Corner” one moment and the 18th at St. Andrews the next. Course designer Mel Graham envisioned recreating the world’s most renowned and challenging golf layouts with 18 holes inspired by all four men’s major championships. A round at World Tour is an utterly unique golf experience – a trip around the world played on a course you’ll never forget. Make your next round memorable, book your tee time at World Tour.

HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP William Welch Wins 36th Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship

William Welch Captures Flight Winners’ Playoff at the 2019 World Amateur Handicap Championship William Welch of West Islip, N.Y. shot a net 69 (gross 85) to win the Flight Winners’ Playoff at the 36th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship Friday at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Course. Welch bested James Juden (Lancaster, Calif.) by a shot to emerge from a field of 3,215 golfers and claim the title of World Champion. Patrick Yoe (Athens, Ga.), Michael Thompson (Columbia, S.C.) and Paul Carrier (Cumming, Ga.) finished in a three-way tie for third at 1-under par on a day when only five players broke par. Christopher Reina (Frisco, Tex.) shot a final-round 75 to secure a one-stroke victory over Kyle Rector (San Diego, Calif.) in the Gross Division. Steve Humphrey (Ocala, Fla.) shot a 76 en route to an eightstroke win in the Senior Gross Division. Nigel Palmer (Birmingham, England) and David Palmer (Uncasville, Conn.) combined to win the Club Choice Ireland Pairs Competition, shooting a combined, net team score of 146. By virtue of winning, the Palmers won a six-night, five-round trip to Ireland, courtesy of Club Choice Ireland. “Congratulations to William Welch, who played great golf all week and certainly earned the title of World Champion,” Tournament Director Scott Tomasello said. “The 36th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship enjoyed a spectacular week on and off the course, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.” The 2020 World Am will be played Aug. 31 - Sept. 4. A 72-hole, net stroke play event, golfers were placed into tightly grouped flights based on age, gender and their handicap index. After 72 holes of competition, all flight winners and ties advanced to Friday’s Flight Winners’ Playoff at Barefoot Resort’s 60 On The Green magazine

Dye Course, an 18-hole shootout that crowned the 2019 World Champion. There were 67 flights in this year’s tournament and 33 Myrtle Beach golf courses hosted tournament play each day. In total, 55 area courses hosted at least one round of the World Am. As appealing as the competition was, it’s only half the fun at the World Am. Each night players gathered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole, which consumed all 120,000 square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Tournament players and a guest enjoyed free food and drinks, a 70-exhibitor golf expo, live entertainment, demo areas, celebrity appearances and more. Among the celebrity guests who appeared at the 36th annual event were Charlie Rymer, Golf Channel stars Damon Hack and Chantel McCabe, billiards legend Ewa Laurance, and media personality Paige Spiranac. HALL OF FAME

From left to right Dustin Johnson, and Hootie & The Blowfish members Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, Darius Rucker Hootie & the Blowfish and Dustin Johnson, the world’s second-ranked golfer, were inducted into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame at Pine Lakes Country Club. Johnson and all four members of Hootie & the Blowfish have long had close ties to the Myrtle Beach golf community and were on hand for the ceremony. A 20-time winner on the PGA Tour, Johnson attended college at Coastal Carolina University and long considered TPC Myrtle Beach, where he continues to display memorabilia, his home course. TPC Myrtle Beach is also home to the Dustin Johnson Golf School and the fourth annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, which will be played March 1-3 on the acclaimed course. The Dustin Johnson Foundation, which raises money to benefit kids academically and with their dreams of playing competitive golf, is based in Myrtle Beach. Johnson, who has served as the official spokesman for the Myrtle Beach golf community, plays an active role in his junior golf tournament, the golf school and his foundation, and all three endeavors regularly bring him back to Myrtle Beach. Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker and Jim “Soni” Sonefeld were Myrtle Beach golfers long before Hootie & the Blowfish became one of the biggest selling bands in music history. Before hitting it big with the 1994 release of Cracked Rear View, the quartet golfed during the day before Hootie played 64 On The Green magazine

Myrtle Beach’s thriving club scene at night, perfecting the sound that led them to stardom. The band’s fondness for the area led to the decision to host the annual Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am (MAM) tournament at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club. This year will mark the MAM’s 25th anniversary, including the last 17 years in Myrtle Beach, and the event has shined a national spotlight on the area, helping attract Golf Channel, ESPN Radio, CBS Radio and many other national and regional outlets. Most significantly, the MAM has raised more than $7.1 million to support education and junior golf in South Carolina. Johnson and Hootie & the Blowfish comprised the 11th class of inductees into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame. Other members of the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame are: Robert White, Jimmy D’Angelo, Carolyn Cassidy Cudone, Clay Brittain, Cecil Brandon, George “Buster” Bryan, Ed Bullock, Gary Schaal, Paul Himmelsbach, Charles Byers, Larry Leagans, Egerton Burroughs, Bryan Floyd, Edward Jerdon, George Hilliard, Russell “Doc” Burgess, Critt Gore, Sandy Miles, Phillips Goings, Kelly Tilghman, Robert LeComte, Vernon Brake and Edward Burroughs. In Memorium Our friend Betty Hunt Paul Himmelsbach The Himmelsbach Communications family recently lost a very special person. Betty Hunt, the former publisher of On The Green Magazine and On The Beach Magazine recently passed away. Betty was the force behind the tremendous growth of Himmelsbach Communications holdings throughout the 80’s and early 90’s. Her work ethic, wonderful personality, and leadership was a gift to our fledgling young company.

Our clients loved her and all the Himmelsbach Communications team was grateful for her leadership. I personally was in awe of her as we worked diligently daily servicing our clients and delivering the goods over and over again. Our prayers are with her and her son Steve as we mourn his loss.

Stay Shallow My Friends

On The Green Golf Lesson

There are two ways to do this and they both work great. The first one is used by Phil Mickelson. I call this the Mickelson approach. He uses a steep setup. His weight is forward, head in front of the ball, and has the shaft leaning forward at address (picture #1). He puts the ball forward in his stance for a slightly

proach especially on the followthrough. This approach works great off short grass. The second one is what I call the serve. This approach works better from the rough. The setup is steep again. Put your weight forward, put your nose in front of the position of the ball, and put the handle a little forward

higher shot and back for a slightly lower shot. The KEY to this setup is to make the motion shallow. The head of the club needs to stay extremely low in the takeaway and the followthrough using a dragging motion. Phil never lets the club head pass the hands in the followthrough. This works great because he doesn’t hit down much at all (shallow). Your lead wrist will stay bowed (picture #2) for this apwww.onthegreenmagazine.com

of the ball with the ball in the middle of your feet (picture #3). The difference is in the swing. You will need some elevation to get through the rough so you will need some wrist hinge on the back swing to elevate the head of the club. The KEY is on the downswing. You will need to swing the clubhead at the ball, not the handle at the ball. This approach uses flexion of the trail wrist and a cupping action of the lead wrist to throw or release the head

of the club (picture #4). This is the key to staying shallow. If you cocked your wrists on the backswing and then dragged the handle into the ball trying to hit down, you would get the club stuck and it would dig too much. The feeling here is to get the clubhead to the ball before the handle gets there! This will ensure you won’t crash.

A Dream Weekend in North Myrtle Beach The 2019 Dream Weekend presented by Gene’s Dream Foundation and Liberty Mutual brought an upbeat energy and important charitable dollars to the Grand Strand. “We are so proud to be able to pave a stronger path for our area youth through the avenues of entertainment and the game of golf. After all, that’s what this town does best.” said Gene’s Dream Foundation co-founder Kelly Tilghman. Tilghman, along with World Golf Hall of Fame member Nancy Lopez, musical sensation Javier Colon and the Grand Strand’s Charlie Rymer spearheaded this star-powered effort in North Myrtle Beach to raise funds for programs geared toward mentoring the game’s next generation. The Dream Weekend featured a concert, fabulous prizes and enviable escapes to renowned golf courses like Tidewater Golf Club and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

On Saturday, October 26th, Gene’s Dream Foundation delivered two action packed tournaments.

The festivities began on Friday, October 25 with the Dream Gala at the Surf Golf & Beach Club. Attendees enjoyed fine dining and exclusive access to an auction with high profile items like a Tiger Woods autographed 2019 Masters Flag and a VIP Monday after the Masters experience with a Gibson J45 acoustic guitar signed by the entire Hootie & The Blowfish band.

The 2nd annual Mentor Cup kicked off the day at Tidewater Golf Club. Children and their adult partners enjoyed a morning filled with competition, clinics and camaraderie tailored toward sharing life lessons and lifelong memories.

The evening was capped off with a private concert by the immensely talented Javier Colon, inaugural winner of NBC’s hit show “The Voice”. Colon followed golf funnyman David Feherty as the featured entertainment for the Dream Weekend. Last year, Feherty brought the house down with his hilarious standup comedy performance at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This year, Colon was the perfect addition as he too brought unique talent and a genuine passion for the game of golf. 68 On The Green magazine

The legendary Nancy Lopez graced participants with an instructional clinic and stories about her childhood mentors. Hall of Fame Duke Women’s Golf Coach Dan Brooks inspired college hopefuls with insight on the educational opportunities in the game. That afternoon, the foundation ushered in a brand-new, fun-filled captain’s choice golf tournament called the Dream Challenge. Along with luxurious prizes, the top two finishing teams qualified for the 2020 Liberty Mutual

Invitational at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. In 2020, Gene’s Dream Foundation will be honored as the Featured Foundation by Liberty Mutual. Gene’s Dream Foundation was created by North Myrtle Beach’s Kelly Tilghman in honor of her late friend and mentor Gene Weldon. Weldon, a 44-year PGA Professional in the Carolinas section, was instrumental in the development of key junior golf programs along the Grand Strand. He passed away in January of 2017 at the age of 68.

Tilghman and business partner Joe White, along with Weldon’s son Wil and a team of dedicated colleagues pledged to keep his spirit alive by supporting programs that were closest to Gene’s heart including The First Tee of Coastal Carolinas. In 2018, Gene’s Dream Foundation proudly donated $50,000 to the local First Tee chapter. This year, more significant funds were raised, thanks in large part, to the tremendous support of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

HICKORY SHAFT BISTRO At Brunswick Plantation

In addition to great food, the Hickory Shaft Bistro offers a historical look back at the early days of golf in St. Andrews, Scotland. Back then, the clubs had hickory shafts and the golf balls were made of leather and stuffed with feathers.

The Bistro’s collection of golf memorabilia has been assembled over 20+ years of travel and also through friends in St. Andrews. Many of the pictures on the walls capture champion golfers from the early days of the game, up to Bobby Jones, near the end of the Hickory Shaft era. Take a few minutes and reminisce. Imagine Old Tom Morris making these clubs and balls then going out and competing in the early Open Championships at Prestwick (home of the first thirteen Open Championships). As you will notice, there are many Hickory Shaft clubs throughout the bistro. Some are oneof-a-kind, with historical significance.
