life is sweeter in the carolinas with duplin winery

For a young family living in a rural community strong in faith and conservative in values, building what would soon be called a “Factory of Liquid Sin” presented many challenges to the Fussell family. The children would be teased by their peers at school and the family rebuked by neighbors. The matriarch of the family, Mama Lib, would steadfastly defend her family to the neighbors but if she were to wholly support the business she would insist the winery remain closed on Sundays, a practice still in place today. In the face of opposition within his community, a quick conversion to Methodism and a lot of prayers allowed David Fussell and

pitched in stomping grapes and bottling wine. “Today we entertain our guests with fun facts about Muscadine grapes and winemaking in the Carolinas,” said Jonathan Fussell. “We like to share a laugh over stories about our beginnings when we could only afford to sell wine in mason jars and our delivery truck was a partially converted hog trailer. We have always treated our guests like family and we have a good time together.” A change in tax laws which once protected the winery in the 1980’s almost forced bankruptcy. Closing the doors to Duplin Winery would have been the best option for the family, had it not been for Ann Fussell’s insistence to stay open for “just one more day.” This mantra was repeated often over the years. began to soar. As other wineries began to pop up across the state, the Fussells knew that they had to be different. Becoming an entertainment destination would ensure the success of the winery. David Fussell Sr. created that destination in Rose Hill, NC and his sons Dave Jr. and Jonathan would take it one step further, expanding to North Myrtle Beach.

duplin winery, north myrtle beach, sc The journey to present day Duplin Winery has witnessed a change in leadership as the next set of brothers embark on their own adventure. Dave Jr. and Jonathan Fussell, representing the third generation, will take Duplin Winery into the future. “My brother Dave and I have dreamed of opening a location along the Grand Strand since the 1990’s.” Understanding that the best way to broaden support for Duplin wines was to spread the Duplin experience, the brothers opened a second tasting room and winery in the spring of 2015. Located at 4650 US Hwy 17 S in North Myrtle Beach, Duplin Winery recreated the tasting experience for visitors in South Carolina, offering a comprehensive wine tasting with an engaging staff. The winery offers four tasting stations, a fully stocked retail store, and a hand bottling line. Sippin’ Sweet Muscadine wine is bottled in a mason jar, paying homage to the company’s roots. Entertainment at the beach means relaxing on Duplin’s porch with the late afternoon summer breezes and performances by local musicians. A glass of Duplin, homemade crackers and their gourmet cheese spread is the perfect ending to the perfect day.

duplin gourmet Duplin Winery has expanded its offerings with a new division. The Bistro at Duplin Winery opened its doors in 2001. Creating a line of homemade ingredients to complement the fare created a new customer demand. Customers would make special requests for “Bert’s jelly” or “Jonathan’s frozen wine slushies” and soon enough our Muscadine Orange Poppy Seed Dressing became the most requested salad dressing in the house. Duplin Gourmet Foods division is an ever-evolving, family owned and operated business whose obligation to its customers parallels its obligation to family. Every product created by Duplin Gourmet is produced with the same mindset we used over a decade ago. Produce something with pride and purpose and deliver it with love. Our very first customers are still requesting their favorites and we hope that you will soon discover yours.

A mere 12 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway is a jewel of “Americana.” Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson’s Township Scheme. It was laid out on a riverbluff in the center of what became Horry County.

Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and small engagements were fought near Kingston. Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox, had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River.

After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain’s King George II. The County’s name was changed to Horry (pronounced O-Ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801 and a courthouse was established in Kingston. Kingston’s name was later changed to Conwayborough for General Robert Conway. 78 On The Beach 2014

visitors will have the opportunity to sample the everyday life of an Horry County farm family living during the early

1900’s. Guests on this working farm will be able to observe and participate in activities that would have been commonplace on traditional family farms. Plowing with mules, making lye soap, grinding grits, blacksmithing, curing meat, preserving vegetables, milking cows, and harvesting crops are only a few hands on activities the Farm plans to offer. Myrtle Beach Golf North Strand Bald Head Island Club was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1974. This beautiful private golf course in North Carolina is reachable by ferry from Southport, NC. The course was recently restored by Tim Cate, who breathed new life into course, making it much more natural looking and challenging. In addition to new Miniverde greens, new bunkers and a new irrigation system, Cate transformed 35 acres of rough into sandy areas with native grasses. Ocean Ridge Plantation is home to the award-winning Big Cats Courses of Grand Strand golf. Lion’s Paw Golf Links, designed by legendary architect Willard Byrd, is a links setting where big hardwoods frame generous, rolling fairways. The Grand Strand favorite was outfitted with MiniVerde™ ultra-dwarf greens in 2010, providing a premium putting surface for years to come. Lion’s Paw has been awarded four stars by Golf Digest. Winding its way through a pristine nature preserve, Panther’s Run Golf Links is a wild and scenic ride from start to finish. Rolling fairways and deep sand bunkers lurk throughout this gorgeous championship layout and the newly installed MiniVerde greens putt fast and true. Business NC Magazine ranked Panther’s Run Golf Links 4th among all coastal region courses in their “Best Bang for the Buck” category. Tiger’s Eye Golf Links is one of Tim Cate’s greatest creations and is a regular on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses”. The G2 bentgrass greens, native grasses and wildflowers along with unique elevation changes and coquina boulder bulkheads make Tiger’s Eye a very special golf experience. Tiger’s Eye was once again ranked in the Top 10 among GOLF Magazine’s Top Public courses State by State for 2014 and the par 3 11th hole at Tiger’s Eye Golf Links was listed on the NC Golf Panel’s “Dream 18,” a fantasy layout featuring the best golf holes in the state. Leopard’s Chase Golf Club opened to rave reviews in the spring of 2007. The 7100+ yard layout features TifSport Bermuda fairways and perfectly manicured L-93 bentgrass greens. The level of detail for this spectacular layout with its natural elevations, scenic landscapes, native grasses and that beautiful white coastal sand used for the waste areas, creates a series of flowing, picturesque holes unlike anything in the area. GolfWeek Magazine ranked Leopard’s Chase #8 in NC on their list of “The Best Courses You Can Play- State by State” for 2014. The Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole Tim Cate design. The course and clubhouse were inspired by an ancient Scottish golf society called Thistle Golf Club. Documents and artifacts from the old club are on display in the clubhouse. The course features three nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. For over twenty years Oyster Bay has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach golfers. Oyster Bay is a rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. A course where variety and innovation are the name of the game. Golf Digest has repeatedly rated Oyster Bay HHHH 1/2 stars and ranked it the “Best New Resort Course of the Year.” The clubhouse has been renovated and upgraded to enhance guests’ experience. Colonial Charters Golf & Country Club features a number of memorable holes defined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed water hazards. The 6,427 yard layout features two iconic green-side waterfalls and the tree-lined fairways reward golfers that are accurate off the tee. Two additional Prime Times Signature Courses are located in the North Strand area. Long Bay Club is a unique Jack Nicklaus Sig-

Myrtle Beach Golf nature Course with Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens, deep pot bunkers, vast waste areas and mounding along the fairways. Close by, Aberdeen Country Club is a 27-hole course designed by Tom Jackson that features Tif-Eagle Bermuda greens on three, 9-hole layouts with a Scottish theme in different natural settings. Located in Little River, SC, River Hills Golf & Country Club is a Tom Jackson parkland-style design blending modern and traditional elements. The fairways of this 18-hole course make their way through a picturesque, heavily-wooded terrain but in rolling hills, unusual for a coastal course, are River Hills’ signature feature. The course was nominated as “Best New Course” in 1989 by Golf Digest and recently underwent a $2 million renovation. The crown jewels of the Glens Golf Group collection are located on opposite sides of Highway 17 near Little River. Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links is designer Clyde Johnston’s brilliant tribute to legendary architect Donald Ross. Named a “Top 10” Myrtle Beach area course by Golf Digest among its many accolades, Glen Dornoch features big Bermuda greens with bump-and-run fringes and spectacular finishing holes on both nines that overlook the Intracoastal Waterway. Heather Glen Golf Links offers 27 holes designed by Johnston and Willard Byrd. Acclaimed as “America’s Best New Public Course” in 1987 by Golf Digest, the three Scottish-inspired nines are set in a virtual nature preserve of old growth oaks and waterfowl habitat. A complete Glens Golf package features significant discounts for both golf and accommodations. With its unrivaled vistas, award winning layout, and showcase of southern elegance and charm, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. October 2014 marked the unveiling of Tidewater’s brand new, completely restored Mini Verde greens. During the extensive greens replacement process, Tidewater also completed fairway expansions, removal of over 400 trees, sod replacement on all green surrounds, as well numerous additional restoration projects-all to insure that the Tidewater golfer enjoys a golf experience second to none. Possum Trot Golf Club is a Glens Golf Group course designed by architect Russell Breeden. Great Tifdwarf Bermuda greens and generous fairways ensure a fun-for-all round at Possum Trot, which is also home to one of the area’s largest practice facilities at the on-site Glens Golf Academy. Greens fee discounts, professional instruction and accommodations can be part of a complete Glens Golf package. A 2,300 acre residential golf community, Barefoot Resort & Golf is one of the most exceptional golf resorts in Myrtle Beach. With names like Tom Fazio, Davis Love III, Greg Norman and Pete Dye, golfers know that they will be treated to some of the finest golf architecture in the world. On April 13, 2000 Barefoot successfully opened four championship courses simultaneously, making it the only time a developer has opened four new courses at the same time in the United States. The Norman Course is a southwestern style design with vast waste areas and several eye-opening holes along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Love Course was Davis Love III breakout design. It is a matchless creation that has elevated greens and generous fairways. The course has its own faux ruins of an antebellum plantation. The Fazio Course is a design that will delight all skill levels of golfers and is a terrific test of your game. It features undisturbed wetlands, native flowers and plants. You will also enjoy an abundance of wildlife. The Dye Course is the Pete Dye centerpiece of Barefoot’s semi-private club and offers a variety of bunkers, waste areas and Dye’s signature bulkheads. Each golf course has received national acclaim by all of the major golf publications. They include: Myrtle Beach’s #1 Golf Course ranking and “Americas Top 100 Public Courses” by Golf Digest, “Top 15 You Can Play in SC” by Golfweek and holds the distinction of being named both the Myrtle Beach and SC 92 On The Beach 2016

This Glens Golf Group course by architect Clyde Johnston was recently rennovated to include huge waste bunkers and new tee boxes. Complete Glens Golf packages include discounted greens fees at this modern Grand Strand classic. Grande Dunes Resort Club was named one of the “Top 100 Public Golf Courses” in America by Golf Digest Magazine in 2011-2012. The Resort Club was also awarded “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association in 2009. Golf at Grande Dunes Resort Club feels completely natural yet effortlessly refined. The superior design unfolds itself in a relaxed, gracious manner enticing golfers with beauty while taunting them with danger. Myrtlewood Golf Club offers golfers a choice of two 18-hole layouts conveniently located in the heart of Myrtle Beach. The Palmetto Course is a traditional design with fairways that gently twist and turn their way towards large, TifDwarf greens. The eighteenth offers a dramatic finish along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Palmetto Course was honored by Golf Magazine as the “Local’s Favorite Course”- 2005. In contrast, the PineHills Course is a modern classic designed by Arthur Hills. Contoured fairways and undulating greens provide an excellent test of golf, one you’re sure to enjoy. PineHills was honored by Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Course” in Myrtle Beach. Pine Lakes Country Club has been an icon in the Myrtle Beach golf scene since 1927, and is also referred to as “The Granddaddy.” After an extensive renovation to the golf course and clubhouse, you can now experience The Granddaddy as it was in the spirit of the 1920s. Many of the historical golf holes were maintained while twelve new holes were created to improve the golf experience that visitors have come to associate with Pine Lakes. The creation of an extraordinary, four-star design golf club, true to the classic architecture of Pine Lakes, has achieved a dynamic expansion, historical restoration and full blossoming of this prominent facility. Arrowhead Country Club is one of Myrtle Beach’s premier 27-Hole golf complexes. With a canvas of 419 Bermuda grass fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens, the team of Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have created a 27-hole masterpiece along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead features three unique 9-hole tracts: The Waterway, The Cypress and The Lakes, each one with a feel all its own. practice facility and an onsite Scottish tavern, the Ailsa Pub. The resort is home to three award- winning courses. The Heathland is a Tom Doak gem where the natural contours of the land dictate the flow of the course. This links course’s windswept hills and deep-faced bunkers are just a few of the challenges that await each player. The greens were recently renovated and Champion Bermuda is the new putting surface. The Moorland is a P.B. Dye design and was recently named by Golf Digest as one of the “Fifty Toughest Courses in America” at #37. It remains one of the most unique courses on the East Coast. Dye’s panache for multilevel fairways and greens and signature bulkheads has transformed this land into one of Myrtle Beach’s most requested courses. Moorland was voted “2014 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” and was ranked #6 in GolfWeek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in SC.” Moorland was also named the 84th Best Resort Course in America in GolfWeek’s Top 100 Resort & Residential Courses in America. The Legends Parkland stands on its own merits. The Parkland is modeled after the style of architects Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National) and George Thomas (Riviera Country Club) and was designed to compliment nature so closely as to make the layout indistinguishable from nature itself. Enjoy tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, substantial undulating greens and experience a day of exceptional golf. All three of the Legends courses have been awarded HHHH 1/2 stars from Golf Digest. All three of the courses were named winners of the Myrtle Beach Chamber’s ‘People’s Choice Award for Best Golf Course.’

Voted the 2004-2005 Golf Course of the year, golfers playing Indian Wells Golf Club continue to rave about the appearance and layout which reminds many of a traditional US Open style course. Indian Wells is a course that places a premium on creative shot making and rewards the daring. After your round, enjoy the relaxing clubhouse and outdoor patio overlooking the 10th tee while being served by the past winners of the coveted “Myrtle Beach Golf News’ Hospitality and Operational Excellence Award.” The Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach presents its golfers the opportunity to see and feel what it is like to be inside the ropes of a tour caliber course. The course was designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio, and has been a host of the Senior Tour Championship. Enjoy perfectly groomed fairways and greens and venture forth through towering pines and expansive wetlands. TPC Myrtle Beach was awarded Five Stars by Golf Digest. It is the only course on the Grand Strand

Myrtle Beach Golf to receive such an honor. Recently the course greens were replaced with MiniVerde Ultradwarf – the same type of grass that the PGA Tour used in its renovation of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The greenside bunkers have been refurbished with new drainage and sand. The Tradition Golf Club is a championship course that boasts the proud traditions of the great courses that have stood the test of time. Amenities abound at the Tradition, from comfortable dining to the elaborate practice facility. The Tradition was awarded four and 1/2 Stars in Golf Digest’s Places to Play 2008. Three of the South Strand’s premier layouts are Founders Collection Courses that are also near the oceanfront Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Architect Tom Jackson built River Club Golf Course around a network of spring-fed ponds and added more than 100 bunkers, but the immaculate Champion Bermuda greens are River Club’s most outstanding feature. The semi-private Litchfield Country Club offers limited public play on its Willard Byrd designed course with plenty of doglegs and fine TifDwarf Bermuda greens. Set among the former ricefields of two historic plantations, Willbrook Plantation Golf Club is a Dan Maples creation with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda greens that was named on Golf For Women’s “Top 50” list in 2010. Built on two of South Carolina’s historic plantations along the scenic Waccamaw River, the Heritage Club is a favorite of Grand Strand golfers. Over 600 acres of giant magnolias, freshwater lakes and marshes have been transformed into a golf course that rivals any course in the Southeast. Honored by Golf Digest as 46th among the “Top 100 Public Golf Courses in America” for 2007-2008 and rated HHHH 1/2 stars in “Places to Play,” the Heritage Club is a mixture of pure Southern charm and hospitality. Heritage Club was ranked #7 in GolfWeek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in SC.” Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club were both ranked in Golf Magazine’s “2014 Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list. True Blue is known as a dramatic, fun layout with vast fairways, undulating greens and impressive elevation changes. The rolling terrain and native vegetation of this former indigo and rice plantation make for a spectacular setting. Caledonia has been recognized for its design and incredible beauty. Caledonia is annually ranked on all major golf publications “Top 100” lists. The courses are land adjacent in Pawleys Island. Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, a Nicklaus Signature course, features a classic Lowcountry design that you can play

over and over and never have the same shot twice. With subtle greens enveloped by sand bunkers, challenging fairways dotted with water and unique obstacles evident on every hole, this is a player’s course that demands strategy, ingenuity and concentration. Pawleys Plantation was ranked by Golf Digest among South Carolina’s “Top 25 Layouts” in 2001. Golf Digest has further awarded Pawleys Plantation four and 1/2 stars in its “Best Places to Play.” Other accolades include Golf For Women’s “Top 10 Women Friendly Courses in America” 1999 and Travel & Leisure Golf’s “4-Star Golf” in 2001.

Founders Club at Pawleys Island was voted 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association. Designed by Thomas Walker, former lead designer for Gary Player Design, this course features impressive elevation changes, fairways defined by mounds with pot bunkers, and square “island” tee boxes set inside massive waste bunkers. Its elevated greens are the only ones on the Grand Strand grassed with the new heat-tolerant Emerald Bermuda that enables the greenskeeper to keep the undulating putting surfaces tight, fast and smooth in any weather.
