e look and feel the way we do today because of the decisions we made yesterday.” That is the most respectable and honest phrase I have ever heard. It’s true of everything in life. I’m financially where I am this year because of the money decisions I made and commitments I put in place last year. My body and health are the product of the decisions I made last year, and the decisions I make today, if made consistently, will directly impact my life and health one way or another in the future. There is good and bad in this, and it’s only for you to decide for yourself which way you see your future. If we can see it, we can achieve it! Some may choose to live blindly and numb themselves with bad decisions— they feel comfort right now by destroying their tomorrows. Blowing money senselessly, eating junk foods, numbing out on electronic devices all lead to death. In most cases, they kill the spirit long before they destroy the body. What many people don’t realize when they’re in this state of mind is that, although making conscious decisions today may be difficult and uncomfortable, it also brings instant reward. It’s a different kind of reward—a deep gratification—even after you make the first better decision toward thriving over surviving. It can be hard to jumpstart yourself after a lifetime of bad choices, especially in food and exercise, but these are not your enemies. Walking out of the gym on the first day, you won’t see the physical change, but you will feel empowered. You’re taking control of your mind, body and spirit. Keep doing that, one day at a time, and the changes will continue to grow! Hippocrates continues, after 60 years, to establish and expand programs that reach more people where they have a need. Our new Diabetes Wellness Program, for example, is specifically designed to help diabetic guests manage and minimize their illness. Hippocrates is where you can go to nurture your body, mind, and soul, and begin loving yourself for what may be the first time in your life. Seems like yesterday I was just getting married, but it’s already been 25 years. Time flies. Don’t waste it! You owe yourself a visit to Hippocrates in 2019. May this be the best year yet!

ealing, health and happiness are the triune that brings recovery. Hippocrates Health Institute was born out of our founder’s reversal of stage 4 cancer. Her legacy has unified and focused all of us on a clear mission. We are now in our seventh decade of Helping People Help Themselves, which clearly is the present and future of the health-care system. Over generations, we have allowed disease to become a big business that has led the masses into subservience. Today’s people, unlike our great-grandparents, have little to no understanding about what it takes to attain well-being. When children get the sniffles, we run to the ER. When we feel a little discomfort, we drive to any of the innumerable national pharmacy chains on every corner. This is a Western phenomenon, and America leads the way. While we harbor only 4 percent of the global population, we consume 50 percent of its pharmaceutical drugs. When we were young, heroin was relegated to the most broken people. It is now a plague that touches all socioeconomic spheres. Around 80 percent of today’s heroin addicts were first prescribed synthetic opioids at their physician’s office. When those drugs become too expensive, the easy fix is to buy heroin on the street. Those we work with at the Institute today are substantially sicker than those from half a century ago, when our professional careers began. We’ve watched diabetes go from being “adult onset”—caused by 50 to 60 years of bad living—to polluting 5- and 7-year-olds with full-blown type 2 diabetes. Gastrointestinal problems were rare, and at times began in the early 20s. Now, and consistently, we work with 10-year-olds enduring diverticulosis, diverticulitis, Chrohn’s, colitis, and IBS caused by genetically modified foods, high sugar contents, and deadly chemicals and preservatives. Cancer was also rare, and now over 50 percent of the population will contract at least one form of cancer in their lifetime. It is a plague in our infants and children. Only accidents supersede this malady as a main cause of death. We can go on and on, but we think you’ve gotten our point. When will people rise up and demand real change? The only way the ruling class listens is when you stop feeding its monstrous systems with your hardearned money. It knows it has you under its thumb, addicted to its products, and ready to buy the drugs to remedy the disorders it brings about. It’s a deadly cycle. There is hope. Every week, people take back their lives and exchange sickness for graceful acceptance of self. Everyone has the ability to heal, but it must start with an awakening that exposes dependence upon negative choices. Strength is required to step out of the horror of modern living. Self-preservation is a gallant and honorable endeavor. We know first-hand that many of the very people who control what you eat and how you medicate live healthful lives. Don’t you believe you deserve the same? At one point, the very healthy lifestyle that we have propagated since the mid-20th century was called a peasant diet. Thank goodness, today, it’s once again hip and right to eat like a peasant. Allow your heart to guide you in the right direction, and your mind to navigate through the nonsensical advertising that seduces you into a coma. Worldwide, people are becoming conscious. It is due time that each of you join this movement into the new paradigm of a life of health, happiness, and healing.

Be well, Brian & Anna Maria Clement, PhD, LN @ClementPhD // @AnnaMariaPhD

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! Countless patients at Hippocrates have experienced the gentle, firm hands of massage therapist Vincent Parmentola, who turns 89 this month. The spunky near-nonagenarian has spent 40 years as a massage therapist, including 12 at Hippocrates. He also teaches a course in stress mastery. “I take care of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of my clients here,” says Vincent, whose book, Diary of a Holy Fool, was released five years ago. For Vincent, the secret to longevity is simple. “I eat a good diet, exercise three times a week, and take time to meditate.”

TOXIC WATER YOUR SOURCE OF LIFE MAY BE THE VERY THING KEEPING YOU SICK. By Dr. Roy Speiser, CWR Environmental Protection Products Clean water and pure air are the basic necessities of life. Unfortunately, we live in a world fraught with environmental abuse, industrial greed, and governmental neglect. Environmental contamination is making us sick and shortening our lives. When toxins in the air and water accumulate in your body, illness will follow. The insidious nature of this toxicity only makes matters worse. Patients and healthcare practitioners alike often fail to connect the dots between environmental toxicity and declining health. Traditional healthcare typically focuses on treating symptoms, which is far less effective than addressing the underlying cause. If you are suffering from a chronic illness and not making progress in your care, it could be your water. Think about it. We use water dozens of times per day. We wash with it, bathe in it, and prepare

food with it. It sustains us—and ironically, it is harming our health. Most drinking water sources across the US have been contaminated with fluoride, chlorine and its chemical by-products THMs, heavy metals, industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, these dangerous agents are growing in volume and toxicity. You may not even know they’re there because many are invisible, tasteless, and odorless. How do these pollutants make us sick? They damage our DNA, impair the liver’s ability to eliminate toxins from the body, degrade immune function, and disrupt endocrine (hormone) communications. These biological effects pave the way for the development of cancer and many other serious health issues. For example, the common water contaminant arsenic is associated with cancers of the liver, lung, kidney,

IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE CAUSE OF YOUR CHRONIC ILLNESS, IT COULD BE YOUR WATER.

bladder, and skin. Chlorine and chloramine by-products are known to increase our risk for bladder and rectal cancers and are classified by the EPA as Class B carcinogens. Sadly, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Today, many people battling serious health challenges exhaust their financial resources on supplements and other treatments but fail to address one of the underlying causes of their disease— contaminated water! Your body cannot heal or detoxify while drinking contaminated water. In an effort to reduce their exposure, millions of consumers are buying basic, entry-level filters such as pour-through pitchers or faucet filters. The problem is that these devices are not capable of removing

the wide array of contaminants found in today’s municipal drinking water. Optimal protection requires a multi-barrier filtration system that can eliminate even the smallest particles. When it comes to water filters, there is no one-sizefits-all. Different contaminants require different filtration technologies. Do your research and weigh your options. Before investing in a filtration product, speak to an experienced water quality specialist who can evaluate your needs and guide you toward a comprehensive filtration solution. For more than 30 years, we at CWR Environmental Protection Products have been developing innovative filtration solutions based on the latest technologies. It’s time we stop taking our water for granted!

I can’t always get my hands on real, fresh wheatgrass juice. What is the best process to use to produce my own wheatgrass powder? What powdered wheatgrass companies don’t tell you is that the dried powder they’re selling you is made from the discarded bits of the grass—not the healthy, beneficial parts. Some are tricky and claim to dry the actual juice, but still, what is left is the particulate. When the Institute resided in Boston, a professor at MIT evaluate dried grass and determined it to be less than 1 percent effective. The only time you should consider using a wheatgrass powder is as a small ingredient in a larger supplement to enhance the symbiosis of the nutrients.

ASK BRIAN ANYTHING! HOW@hippocratesinst.org Brian Clement PhD, LN Co-director of Hippocrates Health Institute

I was told a long time ago to take health advice only from legitimate doctors who do not sell books and products. There are a number of doctors older than 100 who suggest eating animal products multiple times per day. Is any expert on real health and aging here qualified to answer this? Although you name some anomalies, people who do not follow healthy lifestyles and live to ripe old ages are not the norm. Our overwhelming data indicate that eaters of plant-based foods are significantly more likely to reach a century and beyond. You may want to look over the most comprehensive study on centenarians and super-centenarians that was recently published, called “The New England Centenarian Study.” My suggestion would be, rather than finding ways not to do the right thing, to instead do the right thing and find the right way.

There is a strong trend in a relatively new category of wine called “natural” and/or “organic.” I’ve noticed some gourmet grocery stores, restaurants and wine bars featuring more of these wines. What do you think of it? Thank you for your question about so-called natural and organic wine. Unfortunately, the alcohol industry has shrewdly funded multimillion-dollar studies to negate the scientific fact that all alcohol is damaging to human health. You can just as easily become an alcoholic on organic spirits, and you’ll have less money after the occurrence. Real science reveals that alcohol kills cells, as well as healthy prebiotics, probiotics, body and brain neurons. It also leads to diseases such as psoriasis, fatty liver and even cancer. There is no safe quantity of alcohol to consume.

I am new to the lifestyle and find that it’s a constant struggle wanting to eat foods like turkey and cheese or seafood, which are considered healthy by most people. Any tips for getting over the hump of craving the old way of eating? You bet it is difficult to abandon a poor lifestyle and adopt a healthy one. When craving the naughty items, it is best to indulge in plant-based proteins such as algae, vegan protein powders, and sprouts and their juices. These high-protein foods help regulate blood sugar and reduce the cravings. Try carrying some plant protein supplements in your pocket, since we are often seduced in our daily life when we’re away from our stock of healthy goodies.

To find out more about these and other vital supplements, visit the Hippocrates online store.

I am an 80-year-old woman with a very active lifestyle. I eat lots of fruit, veggies, salads, and wild small seafood from cold waters. Eighty percent of my food is raw, and 20 percent is cooked on low heat only. Can you please name the LifeGive vitamins and minerals I should take for my age? Are serving sizes noted on the bottle? Congratulations for being a sensible, 80-year-young woman. It sounds like you are on a great track, since much of your diet is raw, plant-based food. The first diet adjustment I suggest would be to eliminate so-called “wild seafood from cold water.” In my book Killer Fish, I explain that all fish contain deadly chemicals, including pharmaceutical drugs and plastics, outweighing any benefits. Likewise with honey, while it contains healthy pollen, it is excessively high in sugars and half fructose, which feeds microbes and mutagens. Although our medical team conducts elaborate testing before we select which supplements are best for your specific needs, generally you should take LifeGive B12 Spectrum or Magnified, LifeGive Power Powder, and LifeGive Women’s Formula. Congratulations again, and I hope we are communicating on your 100th birthday.

n my early years of work, there was no doubt in my mind that nutrition alone could reverse any and all problems. What a surprise it was when I discovered that the organ between my ears had as much to do with recovery as plant-based foods and supplements. Psychoneuro-immunology was emerging as a new way to look at bodily concerns. Although this theory was gaining popularity, there was little science to support the mind-body connection. Today, on the contrary, there are volumes of data exploring and documenting the effect that one’s attitude, thought, and focused visualiza-

Since I assumed the directorship of Hippocrates Health Institute in 1980, I have enhanced our offerings by adding psychotherapists to our faculty. We are lucky that they are gifted and impassioned to do the work that they gracefully share with our guests. We receive reports from our participants on how successfully addressing previously unresolved issues brings instant relief in the form of emotional and physical release. Not unlike a dream you had of creating a piece of art, or building your home and then achieving it, thinking of a peaceful and whole well-being can also be accomplished by your conscious commitment to healing. Most often, the nemesis to recovery is the constant anguish we harbor when fighting a disease. Once we are able to stop the fight and tune in to the universal channel of well-being, what happens appears like magic. You start self-realizing your own health and well-being. On a consistent basis, our guests report the size of their tumor has reduced, or the pain in their body has waned. Most importantly, our medical team observes dynamic and dramatic shifts in

blood profiles. We further gain insight into the remarkable phenomena of healing by testing each guest with biofeedback technology. As they navigate through their programs here at Hippocrates, and release their baggage, there is an almost unanimous improvement in the way their physical and emotional pathways function. Not so far in the future, we will move from the chemical clutches of pharmaceutical medicine to the subtle, yet powerful, world of frequency healing. Science has recently established that chemistry is 100 times less effective than energy on shifting physical disorders. We are cerebral beings, practicing the ritual of conventional science, forgetting that our heart is 5,000 times more powerful in establishing recovery. There is no doubt in my mind

that we are moving into a new frontier, where old-school notions will slip to the wayside and be replaced by consciousness and quantum biology. Fear is the greatest enemy to progress. Although difficult, those who are comfortable standing for antiquated theories must move out of the way and permit new discoveries to guide us. Healing is achievable when the heart is employed and the head lets go. Each recovery that I have had the privilege to observe is a spectacular, courageous act of self-realization, manifested in a physical outcome. These measureable shifts in anatomy are becoming the greatest aspiration for advanced thinkers. We must all remove the historic chains of limited thinking, so that we can become explorers in the invisible world of biofrequency medicine.

Heal your mind and your body will follow. This simple, yet profound act is your key to future harmony and well-being. Be a loving warrior of self-acceptance, taking full responsibility for all that you think, do, and express. Never divert your attention or blame others for your self-created reality. Be loving and gentle with yourself, yet relentless in your pursuit toward self-realized well-being. It is no longer about what has happened to me, but rather what will I make happen. Your depth of powerful potential is endless and uncompromising. There is nothing that you are incapable of once you commit yourself to the conquest of normality. Homeostasis, which is the ultimate balance, will come once you manifest your purest and highest values.

Judy BenAsher LEARNING TO BREATHE AGAIN

I

was in Los Angeles working in film, and my mom was fighting ovarian cancer when my story began. I moved home to Tucson, Arizona to help my mom through hospice. Toward the end of that experience, I discovered Kris Carr, a wellness activist and cancer survivor, and so much great new information that inspired me to share it in a documentary (still in production) called TruthSeeker. I wanted to make it easier for people to have this information so sick and worried people would have some ideas they could easily put into action. I was hearing story after story about how happy and well people felt around the world, and realized I did not feel that way. I couldn’t remember feeling happy or well in the last 20 years. Granted, I had just lost my sweet mom, but over the years, I had put on more than 100 pounds and had less than no energy. I was so disconnected that I didn’t realize how sick I was. I began searching for answers. My doctor thought I had ovarian cancer, too, and I went into emergency surgery. I woke up without ovaries or fallopian tubes (and never even had cancer). So, I went into menopause totally unprepared and then I got really sick. I found out I had Hashimoto’s disease and was severely hypothyroid. The shock of the surgery put me into a Hashimotos flare and my body began attacking itself. The day before my surgery, I moved into a multi-level house, where I then had vertigo for three months. I had

no way to think through answers or get the help it would take to get well—or even get out of bed. I had an idea to ask for help on Facebook. I had so many answers and ideas to choose from within two minutes of posting. I was out of bed within a week and on to researching what could help me truly and deeply get well and stay well, forever. Remembering Kris Carr, I discovered the alkaline diet and started the process of chipping away at the layers of my health. My mom’s cancer made it very clear that I needed to be in an emotional place of allowing healing to happen. If I believed I couldn’t get well, it’d be a steep uphill battle. I started learning from Terry Hickey of Belief Change Alchemy, and started working on myself. I began sharing my story in my film, too. A new friend I met on this journey invited me to join her at Hippocrates. I was always interested in filming there, as I truly believed in the foundations of what it offers. So, I told her, “Hell yes!” My first week at Hippocrates was like learning to breathe again. I was a fish out of water for sure. My lifestyle and diet in the months before had been couching, nachos, and Reese’s Pieces—and I was good at it. I hadn’t exercised in any way in about four years. I did have healthy moments, but nothing stuck. I was terrified I couldn’t keep up at Hippocrates—at best or worst I’d die on the spot. However, I found the most loving, kind-hearted, amazing people there. The staff—I mean all the staff—are just so great at their jobs. I had support for the first time ever. I did bloodwork upon arrival and received an in-depth map to wellness. Awaiting me were highly qualified, exceptional people, from my weight-loss team to my medical doctors. I met with Dr. Helman, a Harvard-trained physician and Lyme specialist. My nurse, Tara Nau, helped me get my head around it all. Brian and his gorgeous wife and partner Anna Maria are the smartest, kindest people I have met in so long. Their passion is next-level, and they are fierce about healing and knowledge. I cannot wait to interview them. They are our biggest gift. The passion at Hippocrates and what it does in the world has been life-changing for me. The people I met there— in all groups, not just mine—I will keep with me forever. It’s like a national park that’s

designed to help you heal, learn about healing and take the knowledge home. I also did therapies such as body work and psychotherapy. I went in thinking I was going to have the best marriage ever— nope! All these things I wasn’t aware of showed up. It felt brutal for a minute, but what I feel now is a lifetime of relief. I had a schedule and made it what was best for me. The fitness trainers I had were all so special and amazing. There were different classes throughout the day with Maurice, Edwin, and Michelle, who rocked my world. They knew how to handle my body and my head. Pierre, the weight-loss director, and his team, Kim Vaccaro and Meriah Dharana, are so smart and gifted, and kept us laughing through our tears and healing. We became a united team of what I can only

describe as misfits and truth-seekers. We all have a deep, passionate desire to live healthy, happy lives. I feel blessed and lucky for the time I had and the knowledge I gained at Hippocrates. It was hard. It was fun. It was life-changing. I did a three-week plan and lost 25 pounds. My body fat went down 6 percent, and I learned so much. The biggest news for me was that my triglycerides went down 171 points. That saved my life. I hadn’t done bloodwork in I don’t know how long, so I didn’t know how at-risk my heart was. I am now continuing to work on my health, my film, and my happiness. I have 70 pounds to go, but am on-track and feeling amazing as I go. I also now have a new community of support that will stay with me for life.

Mom’s Story Bryna Ben-Asher was helping me plan my wedding—a moment we had dreamed of together for a lifetime! She lived in Tucson and I in LA, so we spent many hours on the phone or flying back and forth. During that time, something felt off—she had big reactions to small things and was very erratic. Mom was always level-headed, so this was truly not like her. A year later— the week before my wedding—my mom was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer. Because she didn’t want to “cast a spell” over the wedding, she waited to share the news with our family until two days after it was over. She then quickly went into surgery. I had a hard time finding what I could do to help. It was like trying to hold on to a freight train. They took out her spleen and resected her colon, so I knew digestion would be a challenge. I searched for solutions and learned how alkalinity and nutrition help the body heal. The hospital gave her foods that caused more inflammation, so my siblings and I began sneaking her healthier food (Shh!). She started healing more quickly than before. I stayed with her at home for weeks at a time. When I was gone, she had decaf coffee and acid-forming foods, but when I was there to feed her juices and alkaline foods, she felt healthy and energized, even with chemo! But no matter how good she felt, she believed that she would not live longer than her doctor said. I started searching for ways to overcome these beliefs and found a number of belief coaches such as Terry Hickey, Stacey Morgenstern and Carey Peters. Unfortunately, I found them too late. My mom passed in 2014. My mom’s journey changed my life. In TruthSeeker, I am grateful to share interviews with those belief-change coaches I discovered, among others. What I now know is that when we allow new possibilities into our minds, we live happier and healthier lives. Recovery 2019 | HIPPOCRATESINSTITUTE.ORG |

Amar Fuller HOW TO LIVE A COURAGEOUS LIFE WITH NO REGRETS. WRITTEN BY MISHEL HERRARA

Y

ears ago, while I was deeply immersed in my hot yoga teacher training, I caught on very quickly to all the hype around one instructor in particular. Her name was Emmy Cleaves, and it was easy to see why she commanded so much respect. At the time, she must have been in her 80s, and yet, there she was, teaching and practicing hot yoga with the best of them. Through her lifestyle, Emmy redefined what it means to grow older. Through intentional practices, she blazed a path for many of us, showing us that aging did not have to equate to illness, disease, or degeneration. She taught me that daily practices and small, deliberate actions have the power to change one’s quality of life. I had the same impression when I met Amar Fuller. Amar is the founder of the Great Oak Collaborative and oversees the daily function of Khalsa Childcare in Leverett, Massachusetts. She is a passionate

30

advocate for plant-based nutrition: the day care is staffed with its own raw-food chef, and it even has an entire room dedicated to sprouting. Amar is also a Kundalini yoga instructor, and dedicates her time and resources to creating community events that inspire people to live healthier lives. “Many people on their deathbed are weighed down by so many regrets,” she told me over green juice recently, “wishing they had made different choices for themselves.” Regrets, it seems, are entirely different than mistakes. Mistakes are made by all, and if we let them, they have the power to teach and guide us. Regrets seem to stem from not having had the courage to “go for it,” so to speak. We can be compassionate and forgive ourselves for the mistakes we’ve made, but we can’t exactly turn back time to go for something that would have satisfied a deeper part of our being. “The lack of connection to spirit may be

| HIPPOCRATESINSTITUTE.ORG | Recovery 2019

an important reason as to why people have so many regrets,” Amar added. “People’s unfulfilled dreams, or activities that they would have liked to pursue, all require courage. We forget that we are not just our physical body, which is why nurturing our spirit is so important.” It clicked for me: trusting ourselves and having a spiritual practice give us the courage to take those leaps of faith. “Everything has the potential to be a spiritual practice,” Amar explained. “The food we eat, how we spend our money, the thoughts we think, the words we choose to speak.” Every little thing. Nourishing our spirit means practicing small, deliberate actions. And it is these small, deliberate actions that guide us to how we ultimately want to feel. It’s easy to dive into New Year’s resolutions for health and wellness, only to get lost in the process and return to the habits that keep us from feeling the way we want to feel. “I feel connected all throughout the day, especially when I’m outdoors, or in the woods, or swimming,” Amar said. “For most of my life, I have consciously brought into practice the teachings that I have received from so many amazing teachers. I have been blessed with a plethora of wisdom. It is out of gratitude for all those gifts that I want to share them with other people.” And share she does: whether it’s teaching yoga, hosting health and wellness events, or managing a day care that is structured on the belief that physical and spiritual nutrition are valuable, Amar has become an anchor in the community for so many people who resonate with her message. Amar is also overseeing two events: a Health Bazaar (live music, chair massages, movement sessions, etc.) followed by a lecture on epigenetics, which will scientifically highlight the ways in which certain lifestyle choices affect our destiny. In the winter, Amar will be taking a small group of people on a three-week journey to the Hippocrates Health Institute, where her daughter came through the Life Transformation Program to reverse cancer, they will dive deeper into the concepts around physical and spiritual nourishment. I’m left feeling gratitude and awe for teachers like Amar, because they are the lighthouses for people like myself who want to live a full, regret-free life.

Frank Di Mauro MY PREVIOUS LIFE: BIG, FAT, FATTER DIABETIC.

H

ippocrates faced big challenges with me: weight gain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea, sciatic nerve pain, fasciitis tendon pain, heel spurs, brain fog, diabetes, leg neuropathy (loss of feeling in feet) failing eyesight and more. Hippocrates helped me get rid of all that. My story starts in January 1959. I was born to Italian immigrant parents who settled in Canada. My parents had gone through the second World War, when families struggled to find where their next meal was coming from. Food was to be revered, cherished, celebrated, and never wasted. We were told to eat everything on the plate, whether we liked it or not. I grew up at a time when play was outside and keeping fit was not a trip to the gym. Food was natural; my relatives and neighbors had gardens, and would share and trade. At that time, food companies were just starting to make processed items. I remember the lure of Cap’n Crunch cereal calling from the store shelves as I shopped with my mother. Years later, I found myself with a family and increasing responsibilities. Work became more managerial than manual, and the weight started to creep up. I tried several diets which always ended with ultimate failure. I would then go on to gain even more weight. In my 30s, there was so much to do with kids and family that I did not pay attention to my health or weight gain. This seemed to be normal as I watched friends and family struggle with exactly the same issues and not give it another thought. After hitting the 300-pound mark in my 40s, I was on several medications and used a CPAP when I slept. There were several episodes of

atrial fibrillation that came on with no warning, some waking me from sleep, and I was taken to the hospital. After the typical drugs didn’t work, the hospital doctors put me under and use the shock paddles to restart my heart. On four occasions, my heart stopped and did not restart right away; essentially, I was dead. Waking up from these procedures was always the same: I felt like I had been kicked by a mule, square-shaped electrical burns marked my chest and side, and the doctor hovered over me and said, “Welcome back. We almost lost you.” In my 50s, after several more episodes of AFib, I was a full-blown diabetic on the maximum dose of Metformin per day, along with blood pressure medication, painkillers for arthritis, sciatica and upcoming prostate issues. I was at my wit’s end. At the encouragement of my friend, Carmine, who has helped many others with chronic illnesses, I finally went to Hippocrates Health Institute. What an adventure! I found a welcoming staff, from the gate guards and receptionists to the chefs, directors and therapists. This place was electric. There was something in the air, or maybe the water. How could so many people fighting chronic life-and-death situations be so open to giving love? There was never a tense moment. There was a feeling of community, a deep sharing and openness among the guests that allowed people to share their feelings and show love for their fellow human beings. I feel the main reason Hippocrates works is the information bestowed on each guest from the many years of experience and tried-andtrue methods that work. I took Hippocrates to heart and opened my mind and soul to all of the experiences, from the Florida sunshine to sharing toasts and shots of wheatgrass in

the hut with other guests, to attending every seminar I could. I thought, “OK. I’ll give this place a chance and play along, not expecting miracles.” But wait, hold the phone! What’s happening? I’m losing weight daily. The first week, I lost 17 pounds. Six days into my three-week Life Transformation Program, my blood-sugar level was 5.7 (102 for my American friends), and a far cry from the 14 (400 in U.S. numbers) the morning of my flight down to Hippocrates. With the help of Andy and Anthony, resident therapists, my mind was clear of sadness that had plagued me since my cousin’s death. The Pure Wave QRS therapy sessions in the Oasis building helped my sciatic nerve and back pain. Who knew magnetic resonance technology could do so much, as well as helping my diabetes, opening my blood vessels and recharging my cells again? All I can say is “WOW.” I was in wonderland. Since I have always had a hard time getting and staying asleep, I tried the Oasis Nucalm Therapy, which put me to sleep within a minute. I slept right through the 30-minute session, feeling refreshed and full of energy for my next appointment. We should all know of this. My cholesterol dropped by half within three weeks. My blood sugar stayed completely normal for the duration. I lost 50 pounds by the morning of my flight out. To date, I have lost 80 pounds and I feel great. My doctor has taken me off all medications and he has asked me about Hippocrates. He’s now interested in attending himself. I end my story with this thought: let food be thy medicine and let Hippocrates be thy map, for without guidance, we will be led down a path that benefits others, not you.

Phillip Nicozisis SPREADING THE HIPPOCRATES MESSAGE

A

fter traveling the world for a year, I recently returned to my home in West Palm Beach, Florida. I decided to put my health educator credentials from Hippocrates Health Institute to the test by living a digital nomad lifestyle. A digital nomad is someone who can work anywhere in the world as long as they are connected through the internet, text, and phone. Over the past year, I’ve traveled to 12 cities in 12 months in 10 countries, including those in Europe, Asia, and South America. I traveled with 40 other people who I did not know before. Each of us in the traveling family, known as a “Tramily,” worked independently of each other for ourselves or for companies. My main business is owning and managing commercial real estate, but for years, I have been a Hippocrates ambassador, Health Educator, public speaker and vegan advocate. I’m also a World Peace Diet facilitator, which I obtained through an educational course based on the best-selling book of the same name. My worldwide, yearlong odyssey included sharing the vegan message through formal presentations and workshops in the places where I lived month by month. As I write this missive, I’m in my 13th month of travel. I’m now traveling with Dr. Will Tuttle, best-selling author of “The World Peace Diet” and visionary speaker, along with his wonderful wife, Madeleine. We are in Europe traveling through seven countries, and once again I’m sharing the vegan message with his lead. I think it’s really important to consider the importance and role of mentors in someone’s life. Both Brian and Anna Maria Clements and Will and Madeleine Tuttle have been so helpful

in giving me and others the tools to be effective advocates. I feel so grateful for this. I can say without hesitation that one of the best decisions I ever made was to enroll in the nine- week health educator course at Hippocrates. Everyone has their path and reasons for showing up at the Institute. Whatever the reasons for coming to this tropical oasis, health educators who go through the program all have their individual talents that they can apply. They can use their gifted talents to take the vegan message out into the world. Whether it’s health coaching, public speaking, a sprouts distribution business, food product lines, political advocacy, or whatever, we all have a role to play based on what excites us. This whole vegan thing is an adventure and is certainly not just a destination. For me, the passion has been to stand in front of a group, large or small, and deliver a talk based on thousands of hours of research and practice. Vegan advocacy, from my experience, is somewhat easier now with social media. In any city I’m going to, I find the vegan groups on Facebook, contact the administrator, and almost at the snap of the fingers I can set up a speaking event. In the case of Malaysia, the organizer who took us through India referred me to a special man, Dr. Vythi, who took me all through Malaysia to five major events where I was the keynote speaker. Once organizers see that you have spoken successfully at this event or that event, it gets easier and easier to get your foot in the door. A personal growth inflection point came while I was residing in Japan in January 2018. Since the Japanese do not speak English for the most part, I was informed that

I would need a translator when speaking to the Tokyo vegan group. This forced me to do away with my PowerPoint slides and really refine the message in a way that I had not contemplated before. My talk in Tokyo was professionally taped and can be seen on YouTube. Once in a while, I go to that link, even to watch just a few moments to remind myself just how surreal it was to go back and forth with a translator between Japanese and English. I also had the benefit of translation in Medellín, with the help of a fellow health educator, Bibiana Mendez Farrar. No doubt about it, the HHI community extends beyond the grounds of the 60-acre West Palm Beach campus. Public speaking hasn’t necessarily come naturally to me. I’ve been doing it for five years, and there’s been trial and error along with lots of hands-on experience. Some training came from watching Brian Clement on YouTube and listening to his taped lectures in the car. But then I also practiced a lot in the mirror. I’ve developed a style, and I can honestly say at this point that I feel as if I found my voice with my signature presentation: “Total Health from a Vegan Perspective.” Sharing the vegan message over the course of a year didn’t always come in the form of public speaking. While in Thailand, living for five weeks in the northern city of Chiang Mai, I spent a few days visiting a shelter for single mothers where I held a sprout workshop. On the last day, we had a raw feast with different spicy sauces. The funny thing is, it never occurred to them not to cook the mung beans. It was a novel concept to just sprout and eat them. I kept telling them through the translation of the head nun: “low-cost high nutrition for the children, low-cost high nutrition for the children.” The head nun was obviously grasping the meaning of my words. Weeks later, I received an email with pictures of sprouted dishes that they had made on their own, with the sprouting equipment I left behind for them. You can imagine how good I felt about this. In the coming months, I’ll be releasing a book about my year abroad called, “Have Laptop, Will Travel.” They say that travel is the only thing you spend money on that makes you wealthy. Sharing the vegan message around the world as a Hippocrates health educator truly has made me the wealthiest of men.

Howard Linamen A LIFE-CHANGING REALIZATION: IT’S ME.

I

participated in the Hippocrates online-program to gain more knowledge of the Hippocrates lifestyle and to be able to help people that I come across in life. I completed the three-week life transformation course in 2016. The online-program got me excited again about the raw food lifestyle and its health benefits. I really like how the program breaks everything down to an energetic level. The course has given me several flashbacks of when I was at Hippocrates and has helped me build on what I learned there. When I came home and talked with people, I was able to tell them what they should not be doing, but I wasn’t always able to give them a good reason as to why. While

34

taking this course, I was interested in the “why” about a lot of things so I could better explain why someone should or should not do something. During this course, I was able to talk to a lot of my friends with excitement about the topic of the day and give them more information about some of the questions they were asking. Most of them said, “Wow, that makes total sense, and I need to make some changes” and “Boy, I’m glad you told me that.” As for the benefits of living the Hippocrates Lifestyle, over the past couple of years, I have grown more spiritual. It started just before I went to Hippocrates in 2016. While I was there, I figured out, or you could say I was taught, why I had acid

reflux. For me, it was the food combining. While there, I detoxed, had one out-ofbody experience, and was able to feel music from the didgeridoo from across the room. By far, the most valuable lesson I still use to this day is that how I view or feel about any situation in my life is totally my choice. I don’t quite know how to put it in words. I’ll just tell the story. During the second week there, I woke up about 1:30 in the morning with all kinds of thoughts and memories streaming through my mind of events throughout my life, even events and situations from my childhood that I had completely forgotten about, my previous divorce, and everything unpleasant up to that point. All of a sudden, I realized it was me and how I chose to see it. Once I made that realization, all the tension in my shoulders and jaw just dropped and the stress went away. To this day, I still use that situation as a reminder. Several times a day, I will stop and do what I call a “shoulder check.” I have learned to use that as a tool. I have found that when my shoulders go up, something is bothering me and then I am able to reflect and let it go. The Hippocrates life transformation course has absolutely changed my life. Since then, I have been certified in Thai massage/ energywork and have had some profound things happen with clients. I found I enjoy giving people any information I can and I tell everyone who I think would benefit from the program to look into it. I have begun to look at people differently. I used to like to judge people. I have learned that there really isn’t good or bad. I am learning not to judge and to try to look at people from my heart and not my mind. I have to open my heart more and tell people that I love them. This has made a remarkable difference with my kids. For the past couple of years, I have spent my free time looking into spiritual development—it has become a passion for me. It has allowed me to feel more with my emotions and taught me to live in the now as much as possible. The more spiritual I get, the more secure I feel. This course has helped me correlate a lot of things. I see how everything fits together and the oneness of things more than ever, and I can’t wait to see what I’m going to figure out next. Each day, I wake up with gratitude.

y husband and I became a couple later than most, but even at 38, I knew I couldn’t be happy without my own children. More than that, I wanted them in only a natural way—no drugs or other types of interventions. I had surgery to address some polyps and endometriosis, and facilitated my healing with medicines and fasting according to Ayurvedic practices. My husband and I had also adopted the practice of drinking an ounce of wheatgrass every day. Incredibly, just two months after the surgery, I found out I was pregnant with identical twins. My infertility specialist could not believe it, and was a bit worried whether I‘d be able to bring them to term. Fortunately, the girls were born healthy. After it was done, my doctor exclaimed, “You and your babies are miracles!” Both twins developed atopic dermatitis after receiving vaccinations. The smaller girl developed gallbladder cholesterol stones after the third dose of the hepatitis vaccine. One of the stones got stuck, leading to a

liver disorder. Traditional doctors suggested either a medication or a surgery to remove the gallbladder—for a 7-month-old baby! We rejected those options and opted for a homeopathic protocol. In one month, the stones flushed out. The doctors haven’t seen any more stones or liver disorder since. She is now 5 years old, and we continue following the raw living foods lifestyle. My second girl was born with a 3 millimeter hole in the auricle of her heart. Usually small holes close up on their own in a few years, but the pediatric heart surgeon said this hole was too big. After what we learned in the Hippocrates Health Educator Program, we fed the girls sprouts two to three times per week, combined with a “regular” diet of soups, pasta, etc. Since it is a bit challenging for any family to switch from an ordinary, even organic, diet to an raw vegan diet, we also supplemented her with zinc. After one year of this, the hole is already almost closed, even though she is only 5.

Now my girls tell everyone that it is very healthy to drink wheatgrass juice, even taxi drivers. I had been studying Ayurveda, so when I heard about living food at the first raw vegan conference in Lithuania in 2012, I got the message very quickly. This was the first time Brian and Anna Maria had visited our home country, the country of Ann Wigmore’s birthplace. I myself had been exhausted from the stress of my twins’ health and upbringing. I had candida and parasites, joint pain, bleeding gums (especially after eating meat) and I suffered from dandruff and skin so dry that my fingers were bleeding most of the time. After a liver flush and nine weeks at Hippocrates, all of my problems have been forgotten. I have clearer skin and so much more energy from following this lifestyle. I am ready to fly to change the world in spreading this message of the benefits of incorporating raw living food into every ordinary diet.

The Salvatores THE MIRACLE OF HIPPOCRATES FOR OUR FAMILY AS TOLD BY ELIZABETH SALVATORE

T Â

he decision to take the family to Hippocrates was an easy one. I had been blessed to be there before, dealing with Lyme disease, and had improved dramatically. I wanted to expose my husband and four daughters to this amazing place, and when my father became seriously ill, we immediately mobilized. Sometimes the universe dictates your travel plans for you. Three generations of the Salvatore-Earnest family made the 1,000-mile car trip to Florida. As my four teenage daughters perform as a string quartet, we traveled with instruments in tow: two violins, one viola, and an enormous cello doubling as a person. In what must have appeared as an overstuffed clown car, we clambered in and out of the seven-seater with difficulty, as my father was using a wheelchair for the first time in his life and could not stand or walk on his own. At 85, my father, Michael Salvatore, was recovering from a bout with sepsis. His infection was so strong that he was in the hospital for a month and we were concerned that he would never recover.

36

When he was released, he was too weak to take care of himself, and I knew he had little chance of returning to work and his lifelong home in his beloved New Orleans. He was a brilliant engineer, inventor, and problem-solver who ran his own real estate business on the side and taught illiterate adults to read at night. A child of Sicilian immigrants, he knew the value of hard work and never stood still. To see him motionless and expressionless, tied to the wheelchair, was disconcerting for all of us. My husband, Jerry, and our daughters Brooke, Arden, and twins Ashley and Aubrey, were not strangers to the vegan lifestyle. We were an out-of-the box family that focused on music, ballet, theater, foreign languages, and travel. Having four children in three and a half years posed certain challenges. When breastfeeding became difficult, I learned to make vegan baby formula to supplement. As the kids grew older, they were the only ones on the playground with green drinks in their baby bottles. Later, we became more creative, packing their school lunch boxes with bean burgers and vegan pizza so they could blend in. Ultimately, the

girls became more involved with music and theater and were acting in television commercials in Manhattan. Ashley began working for Nickelodeon, with a recurring TV series role, necessitating a move to the New York area. The acting, musical performances, and time on the road left us overwhelmed and many of our positive eating habits waned as our stress levels rose. Hippocrates was the first place to effectively teach me just how detrimental stress is to health. I was particularly concerned because the girls were challenged with Lyme, no doubt passed from me, and they were beginning to show symptoms after previously being asymptomatic. These fears began to dissolve as we drove into Hippocrates and a feeling of relief and hope fell over me. I had experienced the power for healing at this place and I wanted my family to feel empowered to effect changes for their own well-being. Eating raw foods was new to the kids but they had no trouble adapting. They enjoyed choosing different vegetables and concocting dressings at the salad bar. Hippocrates was a playground for

more maladies. He was a consummate curmudgeon and stubborn Sicilian, and we were concerned he would not follow the diet. I remembered Brian saying something about Italians and olives, though, and once Dad found olives on the buffet, all was good. By week two, he was showing an interest in his life and transferred from the wheelchair to a walker. He religiously got his green juices and wheatgrass and supplements to rebuild his immune system. He was weaned off of all medication as his blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol returned to normal levels after a lifetime of pills. Surprisingly, we found him one day in his room on the grounds in the Hacienda, poring over his paperwork, making his calculations and reports, just as he had done for 60 years. All seven of us left Hippocrates in better health and with a renewed understanding for change. Brian presented the issues in a way that was logical and seamless, and I could see that the girls, as well as Dad, were absorbing the principles and the science behind them. Anna Maria’s lectures had armed us with the information to take home and transition—all the “whys and hows.”

them, with a well-equipped exercise room, outdoor gym, walking trails, bicycles, and swimming pools. All of us followed the Lyme protocol with supplements and IVs, and the energy returned and the brain fog lifted. It was a much-needed health reboot and, as a bonus, the girls were able to perform as a quartet for this magical place. My father was a natural-born teacher and he listened intently to Brian’s lectures. One day, Brian talked about issues with dairy food and Dad couldn’t wait to relay this to his engineering friends at the retiree ice cream social. What was most amusing was watching him in Wigmore Hall in his third week, teaching card game strategies. What the grandkids did not know was that my father, who grew up on the wrong side of New Orleans, used to hustle pool and gamble with cards in the French Quarter, later picking up returnable Coke bottles on the way home to help support his family. In his defense, he told them it was his right to do this, as he was a mathematician and “pool was a game of angles, and cards were to be counted.” He teased the girls, who found it impossible

to keep up with him, and espoused, “My advice to you is never to play cards!” All I know is that his mental clarity and laughter had returned and none of the guests could keep up with his card games or the smile that lit up his face. As he sat for hours in the Hippocrates lunchroom, I remember thinking, “So that’s why they call it the ‘Life Transformation’ Program.” The recovery of my father was nothing short of astounding. He came out of the hospital with what became known in the family as the “plethora of pills”—a cocktail of pharmaceuticals for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, neuropathy, and many

On the day we drove out, we experienced a miracle. My father was insisting that the girls assist him in getting to the car. We had retired the wheelchair and walker, but he loved the attention. We purposefully procrastinated and he became impatient, jumping up and almost running to the car, happily exceeding our expectations. We quickly snapped a photo while stifling our laughter. How is the phone answered at Hippocrates? “Health and happiness.” You can’t put a price on that.

Rebecca Lozano DISCOVERING HIPPOCRATES

M

y interest in health began when I was very young—at the tender age of 6. My mother was going to nursing school and I would sit beside her, wanting to know what she was studying. She nurtured my curiosity by allowing me to give her vocabulary words for definition memorization and learning skeletal diagrams for identification. Oftentimes, I would sit by her side looking at the pictures in her textbooks while she studied. Most parents would probably have shooed me away, but my mom had tremendous patience and took the time from her study schedule to teach me. In high school, I preferred the sciences. I knew I wanted to be a doctor. As it turned out, this academic curiosity proved useful to my own heath challenges.

38

At the age of 15, I was trapped in the high school bathroom with a sudden attack of excruciating pain in my lower right back. Thankfully, my sister was there to get me help. Not knowing what was wrong, the doctors admitted me into the hospital. After numerous tests and procedures, the doctors performed exploratory surgery. It was then that they found the problem: I had three kidneys—one on the left side and two on the right! They tried to connect the two ureters on the right side, but were ultimately unsuccessful. After three weeks, I was admitted back for a nephrectomy. During another monthlong stay, they removed one-and-ahalf kidneys from my right side, which left me with one functioning kidney. This was the start of my nutritional journey.

| HIPPOCRATESINSTITUTE.ORG | Recovery 2019

On the advice of my nephrologist, I was to start my day with a cup of warm water with juiced lemon in it. Additionally, I was to monitor and limit the consumption of protein. This was fine with me, as I wasn’t that fond of meat anyway. I grew curious about different kinds of diets, like macrobiotic and vegetarian. Growing up in Wisconsin, meat, potatoes and dairy were the staple for practically every meal. Even in grade school, we were served a pint of milk right before lunch. Thankfully, my family ate plenty of vegetables as well. I had tried veganism and food combining in the past, but didn’t quite comprehend the proper, nutritious way to do it. In the early 1990s, I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma. There were three courses of treatment: surgery, chemotherapy, or a drug to shrink the tumor. As a new bride longing for freedom, I elected the drug. I had good success with it myself, but found out later that it was taken off the market for killing patients. In the early 2000s, I was diagnosed with a lump in my breast. No other health challenges had scared me until now. My mother died of breast cancer at a fairly young age, so I was afraid. It wasn’t pleasant, but I accepted that it was just who I was—perfectly imperfect. That is when I discovered Hippocrates Health Institute. I enrolled in the Life Transformation Program and it changed my life. The staff addresses mind, body and spirit to educate the complete individual. The feelings of being on campus in the lush surroundings of nature, and of walking from your room to class and spa treatments, exponentially contributed to my transformation to health and wellness. This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I am truly blessed to have Hippocrates in my backyard. The staff ’s wealth of scientific knowledge, coupled with the practical experience of working with people for over 60 years and knowing what works, provides the most valuable experience not found anywhere else. My gratitude for having the opportunity to stay at Hippocrates Health Institute inspired me to take the Lifestyle Medicine Coaching Online Program. I want to be a source of knowledge to others in their quest for health—the Hippocrates way.

hey say a repeat customer is a happy customer. That might be why I’ve enrolled in Hippocrates programs four times since June 2017, and why I have a fifth trip planned for November. I love Hippocrates because it’s a mind, body, and spiritual retreat. For a Type 2 diabetic like me, it has also been a life-changing retreat. Before my first visit, my cholesterol level was 170, my blood pressure was 135/80, and my A1C level was 11. But in the last 13 months, those numbers have improved and stabilized to 160, 130/78 and 5.4, respectively. I visited my doctor in September 2017, and he said I could stop my all medications because my numbers were so

improved. Because I made a lifestyle change and religiously followed the protocol recommended by Hippocrates, my numbers are better now than they ever were with medication. That lifestyle change includes eating a plant-based diet and exercising consistently. I put sprouts in everything I eat. I also enjoys nuts, beans, raw hummus and spaghetti zucchini. As far as exercise, I follow the run-walkrun protocol recommended by former Olympian Jeff Galloway. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I alternate jogging for 2.5 minutes and walking for 30 seconds. On every other day of the week I wake up each morning at 6 a.m. and go for a four-mile walk.

My hard work has paid off. I’ve lost 25 pounds so far. For the first time in 25 years I can tuck my shirt into my pants without feeling fat rolls. Also, I went to the beach and for the first time in years walked around without wearing a shirt. I was extremely self-conscious before. I’m doing everything I can to embrace this lifestyle change, which is why I continue enrolling in Hippocrates’s three-week programs. They offer an extraordinary, serene, and loving atmosphere. Each time I go there I learn something new and implement that knowledge into my lifestyle change. I continue going there to recharge my batteries. We’re all going to die someday, but I don’t want to suffer before I die.

rior rior to becoming ill, I lived the Standard American Diet (SAD). This meant consuming copious amounts of meat, dairy, and sugar. However, having been a collegiate athlete, I also exercised a great deal. Looking back at this lifestyle now, lots of exercise and poor nutrition equal a recipe for disease.

40

On weekends, I would go out with friends and consume alcohol for mindless fun. Like many young men, I had a sense of invincibility. I believed that I couldn’t get sick and that I could eat and do whatever I wanted with no detrimental consequences. I enjoyed helping others and worked in health care for many years in many

different roles. Tired of being broke, I decided to leave my passion of helping others for training in computers and pursued a higher-paying job. My computer training was intensive and, as a result, I rarely exercised during that time. After a stressful period of seeking employment in my new career field, I finally found a well-paying job. Looking back on the career change, job dissatisfaction can lead to health issues. Also, during this time, I started dating Zainab, who would later become my wife. Once I began working in a job that I was not passionate about, I started feeling physically different. I had less energy and occasionally suffered shortness of breath. I went to my doctor for a physical and he said that I was all right, just anemic. He told me that all I needed were some iron pills. However, a few months after that, I experienced extreme night sweats. And, shortly after that, I started to get chest pains that kept me up at night. Thinking I might have been experiencing a cardiac condition, I decided to go to the emergency room. After a battery of cardiac tests, the doctors said my heart was fine but they had seen a mass in the chest x-ray. The doctors recommended more testing and then I had many different scans—CAT, Gallium, PET—all of which detected masses. They recommended a biopsy, which determined that I had cancer. In September 1999, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease stage IV B—stage IV is the last stage of this cancer; B means with symptoms. I went for a second opinion and they confirmed the first diagnosis. At the time, I did not know much about diet and lifestyle modification, so I was treated, conventionally, with chemotherapy. For six months, I worked throughout my treatment (looking back, this was a mistake). The only dietary and lifestyle modification recommended by my oncologist was not to drink alcohol. The treatment left me with brain fog (chemo brain), overweight, weak, low energy, sterile, bald, and more susceptible to other cancers. At the end of my treatment, I had to be hospitalized for a week because of a critically low white blood cell count,

which left me with high fevers. I also had an electrolyte imbalance. That year, I got to celebrate my birthday in the hospital. After the cancer treatment, I discovered some interesting statistics. I had less than a 40 percent chance of living five more years. Obviously, I wanted to survive beyond this time frame

and I was hungry for knowledge and information to keep myself alive. So, I started reading everything I could get my hands on about natural and complementary health care. I researched the internet for answers and interviewed registered dietitians, naturopathic doctors, and many others in the complementary health field. I

Repeating an affirmation in front of a mirror, and saying it with feeling using the present tense, has been shown to have the greatest benefit. MID-MORNING AND MID-AFTERNOON: Green juice with celery, cucumber, pea sprouts, and sunflower sprouts. In the afternoons, I like to add ginger. LUNCH: Sprout salad with kimchi and sea vegetables. DINNER: I will vary dinner with raw pizza, kelp noodles, raw zucchini, Mediterranean food and many other dishes. I have some cooked vegan food on occasion. Food is easier for me than most others because my wife, Zainab, is an amazing vegan chef. EVENING: I like to laugh with a comedy or a good documentary.

also attended many lectures, workshops, and seminars on the subject. After the chemotherapy, it took me more than a year to feel normal. During that time, I was starting to change my lifestyle and diet. My mother recommended I attend a weekend workshop that taught people about the raw, living foods lifestyle. Brian Clement, Hippocrates director, was the keynote speaker and what he said resonated with me. I began reading his books and confirmed the science behind the lifestyle he discussed. It all made perfect sense. So, I started adding living foods to my diet and felt better than ever. Having the support from my then-girlfriend, Zainab, and my family and friends during my recovery was crucial to my survival. As a result of this eye-opening experience, I went back to school to become a registered nurse because I wanted to help others. After my training, I worked in a hospital on a medical/surgical/oncology floor. I didn’t feel that I was truly helping people in the hospital. The health-care system is based on treating symptoms rather than the cause of disease, so we would see the same people come back—even sicker than before. The education people would get from the hospital was little to none. So, I knew I needed to leave that counterproductive environment. I quit my job to enter the Hippocrates Health Educator Program. It deals extensively with the practice and teachings of the living foods lifestyle and also covers many areas of the complementary health-care field. The program was great and gave me a new direction in my life. Not long after completing the Health Educator Program, I got a job working at Hippocrates Health Institute. I love my work. Here, I am the medical supervisor and I also get to do guest health consultations and lecture on various health topics. The living foods lifestyle has helped me fully recover from stage IV cancer. It has been more than 18 years and I feel better than ever. Without cancer, I never would have found my true passion, which is teaching a healthy livestyle and helping people in an authentic way. Tamara Weinstein FOOD FOR THOUGHT

N

ot long ago, when the spring of 2018 was just coming in with all the promise of life, green and budding all about me, I felt myself still in a deep, dark winter to which I saw no end. One late afternoon, which found me bloated, weak, shaky, almost trembling with an illness from which I could find no respite, came a magazine to my post box. A friend had gifted me with an issue of Healing Our World and there it was awaiting me, to change my life all in one day. I didn’t know what lay inside, so I put it on my desk pile. That evening, however, after a crying jag brought about by the realization that I would have to withdraw further from my life work, due to exhaustion and illness, I decided to settle into my tub with a good read. I took that portentous magazine off my pile and began to read while the hot water buoyed and supported my tired bones. The message therein began to stir an excitement, kindling within me a small light of hope. After I read further, I went to my computer and started exploring this world called Hippocrates. I’ll do it! Everything I had explored and read about this lifestyle made such intuitive sense to me. Why wasn’t this more available in the health media? It seems so real, primal, and basic, this way of thinking; why has it eluded me? How simple to see food as medicine, or as poison as the case may be. Why not simplify my eating habits and try this? As a doctor of Oriental medicine, this path should have been known by me, and, in part, of course, it was. Yet my own food

cravings and addictive cycle of eating what seemed comforting to my spirit won out over a sober eating path. Additionally, I was ignorant of how processed meat and grain had so sorely and exponentially been mutated. In the state of disease to which I had sunk, my despair and need for comfort had led me to consume the fried, the sweet, the oily, and the dairy. Simply, I was in my own dark night of the soul and the body. I saw no way out. I was in a food comfort nightmare. After the night’s reading, I slowly began to implement a transitional plan to save my life, although I did not know at the time that this truly was going to happen. I also procured a high-quality juicer and blender, and the competition between my cravings, my desire, and the live rainbow food lifestyle began. I feel led to make a confession, heretofore alluded to but now brought forth with truer clarity: I am a food addict. This is a serious business, and for all my fellow sufferers out there, I feel it of paramount importance to make this confession, as shameful as it may be. I simply could not stop eating foods to satiate some deep craving or emptiness within me. I ate till my kidneys, spleen, and heart functions became compromised. Literally, I was eating myself to death. This I know is what drug addicts and alcoholics do, yet my path of addiction felt to me as terminal as these more toxic paths. I have never been able to find a way of eating that does not lead me back to my cravings to once again begin the crescendo into illness. I am 59

years old and have finally found myself at a place where physicians were prophesying dialysis, diabetes, and heart disease. One would think this would have put enough fear in me to finally stop and curb my cravings. It did not. Enter the Hippocrates way of life. This is what I have to say about this wonderful plan: “Here is the key to a way of life that works!” Six months have passed for me, three months of which I implemented the simple plan of eating at my home; then one month wherein I became a student and recipient of the Hippocrates Health Institute’s Life Transformation Program, receiving all of their love, intelligence, and excellent care. Now, on my own again, I am armed with the knowledge to save and celebrate my new life. I have awoken from my nightmare of a lifetime of food-craving desire. Now my body is hungry for and constantly celebratory of this good, green life. I look upon those old food friends of mine and know them for the masked poisons that they were. I no longer feel any alliance with them. Now I walk this beautiful way, growing lighter and stronger in my body, my spirit, and my mind. I have changed. Releasing meat and all processed and GMO products has given me a new pair of glasses through which to view my life. From this vantage point, my perspective is so clear and drenched with light. I am enjoying mounting health, which is changing me at the very core of my being. Who could ever want more? I invite you to join me; we are going to have so much fun.

TURN UP THE HEAT

for your health

From ancient sweat lodges to modern times, saunas have been used to effectively detoxify the body and strengthen the mind and spirit. Throughout antiquity, most cultures have enjoyed a form of sauna such as the Native American sweat lodge, the Central American temazcal, Finnish saunas, Russian banyas, Turkish hammams, and the Japanese sentó. People have always known that time spent enveloped in deep penetrating heat has undeniable short-term benefits and is a long-term investment in a healthy life. In a recent review of studies and controlled trials1, researchers found evidence that sauna sessions have

an impressive array of beneficial health effects, including: • increased lifespan • reduced cardiovascular disease • lowered blood pressure • improved cognitive function • reduced risk of neurodegenerative disease • improved arthritis symptoms • detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals Rhonda Patrick, Ph.D. in biomedical science and well known for

her in depth research on the many benefits of saunas, refers to studies that show that flies and worms briefly exposed to heat treatment have an increase in their lifespan by up to 15 percent. Dr. Patrick suggests, “One possible explanation for the increased lifespan is heat stress known to induce homesis. This boosts the expression of heat shock proteins, which are known to improve longevity.” Dr. Patrick reports that in addition to cardio and longevity benefits,

“Acclimating your body to heat stress by intermittent whole-body hyperthermia through sauna use (hyperthermic conditioning) has been shown to have robust positive effects on the brain including: • improved attention and focus • accelerated growth of new brain cells • improved ability to learn and retain information • ability to ameliorate certain types of depression and anxiety.” JAMA Internal Medicine also shows that regularly spending time in a sauna may help keep the heart healthy and extend life. Researchers from Finland tracked 2,300 men for an average of 20 years. They found that the more sessions per week men spent in the sauna, the lower their risk of sudden cardiac death and fatal coronary heart disease. The sauna also extended the life of participants with other illnesses, including cancer. In The Annals of Clinical Research Volume 20, research results show the benefits of sauna for relief of pain and increased mobility. Pain relief induced by a sauna was attributed to an increase in the release of anti-inflammatory compounds causing it to release natural pain-killing endorphins. More than 50 percent of participants reported relief of pain and an increase in mobility.

“We need to take infrared saunas to detoxify the ungodly amount of chemicals and toxins that we are constantly exposed to.” —Dr. Brian Clement, Director, Hippocrates Health Institute

The Journal of Human Kinetics investigated the effect of sauna on the immune system, specifically white blood cell profile, cortisol levels and selected physiological indices in athletes and non-athletes. After the sauna session, an increased number of white blood cells, lymphocyte, neutrophil and basophil counts was reported in the white blood cell profile, showing

that sauna use stimulates the immune system. Sauna use has been shown to improve almost every marker related to type 2 diabetes, including insulin sensitivity, fasting blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, and body fat levels2. Studies have found saunas to be an excellent protocol for detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals. For instance, arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury have been shown to be excreted through the skin, as well or better than when they’re excreted in the urine3. A Canadian study found that the concentration of phytates (chemicals in toys, fragrances and cosmetics) was twice as high in sweat, as in urine or blood4. Another study found BPA in 80 percent of the subject’s sweat, while finding no detectable levels in blood or urine5. This seems to point to sweat being the best method for excreting BPA. Clearly, taking a sauna session 3 to 4 times a week will enhance your health and the quality of your day-to-day life, saving you much suffering and thousands in healthcare down the line. Ask anyone you know who has a sauna about the benefits they feel and they’ll regale you with experiences ranging from improved sleep, to less pain and inflammation. Having read all this, wouldn’t you agree, “It’s time to turn up the heat for your health!”

o region of our body is as heavily saturated with heavy metals, alloys, toxic materials, dead organs (teeth that have undergone root canal treatment), and inflammations such as the mouth and jaw areas. Biological dentistry is named after a current of thought that treats the mouth as a part of the body and not as an individual organ. Many autoimmune diseases and their related symptoms have a big correlation with what patients have in their mouths. For example, root canal treatments have proved to be present in the vast majority of women suffering from breast cancer. Treatment for root canal involves the removal of the infected root canal, cleaning the debris around the bone, and sterilizing it with a gas known

50

as ozone therapy. At the same time, a metal-free, biocompatible zirconia implant is placed, and a PRF membrane (plasma components extracted from the patient’s blood) is placed around the implant to achieve faster healing and promoting new bone growth. When teeth are extracted, the cavities in the jaw can develop neuralgia-inducing cavitational osteonecrosis (NICOs). Where bone is missing, the jaw can develop a fatty substance full of toxins, bacteria, fungi and necrotic tissue, as well as lead, aluminum, and mercury. These bacteria and toxins are also present with serious autoimmune diseases such as Lyme disease. Other symptoms associated with NICOs are chronic fatigue, cardiovascular complaints, weight gain, allergies, and skin diseases. Metals play a huge role in

| HIPPOCRATESINSTITUTE.ORG | Recovery 2019

causing interference fields in the mouth and blocking the meridian system, negatively affecting vital organs. The immune system sees almost every metal, it seems, as a foreign substance, making it liable to trigger an allergy or lead to the development of autoimmune disorders. Toxicity is the main concern with the highly poisonous dental amalgam. It contains heavy metals such as mercury, copper, tin and silver. Scientific studies have clearly demonstrated that these and other metals, such as gold and chrome, have cytotoxic, immunological and carcinogenic effects, along with an influence on a person’s metabolism. Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive element, surpassing lead and arsenic. From chewing, grinding or brushing one’s teeth, and by drinking hot or cold beverages, a certain

amount of mercury vapor is released each day. This causes a low-dose chronic poisoning over an amalgam’s lifetime of 20 years. Mercury is stored in the kidneys, liver, brain, large intestine, fat tissue, and the thyroid gland. Studies have shown that the half-life of mercury in the brain is 16 to 30 years. This is why important measures need to be taken to prevent mercury exposure during amalgam removals or crown preparations. We, as dentists, have great potential to be healers. Up to 70 percent of chronic illnesses are connected to interference fields in the oral cavity. Using comprehensive, metal-free dental restorations is the key and the future of biological medicine. WHAT’S YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY? The best-performing ETFs offer greater potential for risk and return than ever before.

Your portfolio strategy and investment income are important components for individual and family health, and stress management in general.

Semiconductor 3x (SOXL)

The semiconductor equity index gives investors core exposure to technology and growth in general. Over the past 5.8 years, SOXL returned 1,469%, or 60% annually. This ETF delivered over 100% in three of the calendar years, but also had a decline of 21% in 2015.

S&P 500 3x (UPRO)

The S&P 500 represents roughly two-thirds of the total domestic stock market. Over the past 5.8 years, UPRO delivered 523%, or almost 37% annualized. This ETF returned 119% in 2013, and 71% last year, but it also lost 5% in 2015.

InvestableBenchmarks.com

While the three ETFs above performed extremely well over the past six years, they were also incredibly volatile due to their equity exposure and use of leverage. In addition, leveraged ETFs do not always function as intended, and they sometimes deliver unexpected results.

Income & Tech 3x

Income & Tech 3x (IT 3x) is the latest addition to the investable benchmark portfolios. This aggressive growth solution is allocated to SOXL 8%, TQQQ 42%, and TMF 50%. Over the past 5.8 years, IT 3x returned 368%, or 30% annualized. Over the same period, the unleveraged Income & Growth (IG) benchmark delivered just 33%, or 5% annualized. Therefore, in less than six years, IT 3x returned 11x the performance of unleveraged Income & Growth. However, IT 3x can also be extremely volatile, and in October 2018, it fell by roughly 21% in that one month alone.

NASDAQ 100 3x (TQQQ)

The NASDAQ 100 is a leading equity index with broad exposure to growth stocks and technology in general. Over the past 5.8 years, TQQQ delivered a total return of 1,112%, or 53% annually. The ETF returned over 100% in two of the years, with gains of 140% in 2013, and 118% in 2017.

BOTTOM LINE

Just as strategic diversification can be a free lunch, leveraged diversification can be a free retirement nest egg. Still, past performance can never guarantee future results, and investors should always use caution when engaging risk assets and/or leverage. Visit etfpm.com or call 866.409.5844 to learn more.

In order to use these leveraged ETFs effectively, consider combining them with exposure to long-term Treasuries (TLT/ TMF). While Treasury bonds will not provide portfolio protection every year, the combination of equities and long-term Treasuries has delivered impressive historical results.

uman ingenuity has led to wondrous feats, from fire to complex social structure. Man has taken apart and put together everything he could lay his hands on—splitting atoms, reaching for the moon, mapping the human genome, connecting the world. We are living in an age of unprecedented technological strides. The challenge before us now is to link the wisdom of our past with current knowledge and technology to find ecologically sound solutions to emerging global issues such as climate change and pollution. For thousands of years, humans have sought to fortify their health and cure various ills with herbal remedies. The search for the true panacea, or cure-all, has been undertaken by virtually every civilization. While hundreds of substances have been tried and tested, only one has truly withstood modern science scrutiny. Perhaps no other botanical better meets the true definition of a panacea than the neem tree, a tropical evergreen belonging to

the mahogany family and native to India and Myanmar. Every part of this fascinating tree has been used from ancient to modern times to treat hundreds of maladies. While other herbs such as ginseng are better-known, comprehensive research has proven that neem has a wider array of uses than any other plant. While it has always been revered in India, recent research has dramatically increased worldwide interest in neem, leading to new products being manufactured and distributed around the globe. The first recorded use of neem was several thousand years ago, as ancient Indian cultures used it as an integral part of dozens of health and beauty aids. The 5,000-year-old botanical healing system known as

D

Ayurveda has utilized neem formulations. Medicinal attributes of neem were extolled in the oldest Sanskrit writings. No wonder the United Nations declared the neem tree to be “the tree of the 21st century.” It is only in recent years that the rest of the world has shown interest in neem’s versatility and potential. International scientific research has explored neem’s ability to prevent and treat an astonishing number of health disorders, including those not successfully addressed by conventional pharmaceuticals. Every part of the neem tree—bark, cake, fruit, flowers, gum, honey, leaves, seed oil, pulp, resin and root—has medicinal value. The trees help prevent environmental pollution and soil erosion, and rehabilitate degraded ecosystems and wastelands. Neem trees are recommended for reforestation, are useful for wind breaks in areas of low rainfall and high-speed wind, protect crops, and can be made into non-toxic

pesticides, veterinarian medicine and cosmetics. My own experience with neem has been nothing short of a miracle. I suffered for more than 40 years with severe psoriasis on my scalp and elbows. However, when I started using neem cream, shampoo, oil, tincture, and soap, I found myself free of psoriasis! Of all the plants that have proven useful throughout the ages, few have offered as much value and versatility as the neem tree. With growing research supporting its healing properties, neem is finally getting the attention it deserves.

I’ve never liked my body. I’ve been overweight and struggled to be thin my whole life. My mother put me on a diet when I was 13. How can I learn to accept myself and my appearance?

A

The message of putting a kid on a diet is “there’s something wrong with you as you are.” That’s what you’re still carrying. This makes self-acceptance more an issue of soothing, comforting, and encouraging a child than being “disciplined” or doing it right as an adult.

| HIPPOCRATESINSTITUTE.ORG | Recovery 2019

Through your new choices, and with the help of therapy, you get to reframe this whole issue. Otherwise, it’s the same old story of never-goodenough. The lifestyle changes you are choosing should be about loving yourself rather than fixing yourself. Without that change at that fundamen-

Our attitude is a product of our genes, our upbringing and the challenges we face in life. My attitude changes with whatever is happening around me. How can I have a good attitude all the time?

A

This is a question with which all of us struggle. As you mentioned, we are influenced by our genes and our individual circumstances; in this respect, some people seem to be luckier than others. It is here we may learn an approach explained by Victor

M

Frankl, the author of Man’s Search for Meaning: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Frankl reframed his own horrific sufferings in a new perspective: Every human experience contains a hidden lesson. Our sufferings begin to diminish once we understand what that lesson might be. To believe that every experience, however negative, could teach us something positive helps us to be positive more of the time. We do have the freedom to choose to be happy or miserable. If we choose to be happy, we can feel that way all the time.

I’m convinced that going vegan is right for my health, but I’m overwhelmed by all the new rules I have to follow. Suddenly my life feels harder, not easier. Does that mean veganism is not right for me?

A

No. It means you’re a beginner, feeling the awkwardness and overwhelming feeling of starting something new. Taking up a new instru-

ment, starting a karate class, or learning a new language all require learning and following new rules. Being overwhelmed is part of the change process; so are confusion and fatigue. We see that with new guests at Hippocrates all the time Every new venture brings forth new neural pathways, new ways of thinking, new feelings. Every change we embark on means letting go

I

N

D

of the old and familiar, which can be stressful. It takes guts to change. Just remember: Rules are not just restrictions and limitations. Rules are the tools that help us get where we want to go. With time, rules turn into habits, and habits then turn into skills. Keep going! The going gets easier. Your vegan black belt awaits you.

To believe that every experience, however negative, could teach us something positive helps us to be positive more of the time.

How can we become less preoccupied with the negative emotions of our past failures—fear, anger, guilt, shame, worry, and so on?

A

It is by changing our attitude toward life. There is a very interesting exercise that may help us to practice this. Dr. David R. Hawkins describes this in his book, Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender. First, we acknowledge the feeling preventing our happiness at a given time. Then, we sit down and think of the exact opposite of that feeling. You may feel a natural urge to resist it, but make sure to let go of the resistance. Suppose, for instance, you have to attend a family wedding and interact with a sister who hurt you in the past, because she believed your parents favored you over her. You naturally feel anger and resentment toward her. The exact opposite is forgiveness and love. You look for the love within you for her as a sibling, forgive her mentally, and stop resisting the feeling of anger. To realize that you are a loving and forgiving person after all is going to make you feel happy. Using a similar method, you will be able to deal with fear by bringing in the feeling of safety.

or many, January is a time of new beginnings. We hear a lot of the term “new year, new you.” I say, “new year, old you.” Get back to basics. Rather than resolve to re-create yourself, why not get back to the old you? The fun you? The you that used to make time for yourself? The you who liked to read, cook, take yoga—whatever it was—that you still exists. Make 2019 the year that old is new again. Bring back the traits you admire in yourself

I

list of things we are going to do. This new year, rather than make resolutions you likely can’t or won’t keep for very long, focus on why you make them in the fi rst place. You make them to be happy. We all want to be happy. Whether you resolve to lose weight, eat healthier, or have more “you” time, the end goal is happiness. So start there. When you are happy, you can do anything. Happiness impacts everything else in your life, including your sleep, your job, your health, your appearance.

you and lift you up. Rid your life of clutter and negativity. Keep inspirational books and words nearby and refer to them often. I believe when you are happy you can do anything. It is a mindset. A choice. Give yourself permission to feel well emotionally and physically. When you do, you will be surprised at the wonderful new opportunities that come your way simply because you are open to receiving them. Life gets easier when you choose to be happy. Not because you suddenly have the

This new year, rather than make resolutions you likely can’t or won’t keep for very long, focus on why you make resolutions in the first place. that maybe you haven’t seen in a while. Let the word “happy” be your guide. As you make purchases, choices, decisions and friends, ask yourself if this will make you happy. If it does, go for it. If it doesn’t, why are you doing it? It’s your life. You deserve to be happy. Traditionally, this is the time of year we make a

Happiness is your choice. You hold the key. There are things you can do every day to live a happier life. For example, have something to look forward to each day. It can be as simple as meeting with a friend, unwinding with a book, yoga—whatever it is that you enjoy. Another tip to happiness is to surround yourself with people who support

best of things but because you make the best of things. Happy people are grateful and appreciative. You may just fi nd that your resolutions from years past actually get resolved this year because when you are happy, you automatically take better care of yourself. You recognize that self-love is not selfish at all. It is a necessity. Make this new

year one of inner peace. Once you do, the other things will fall into place. A healthy, positive life starts with a healthy, positive mind. Eliminate negative words and thoughts. Train your mind. Remind yourself that starting now, the only approval you really need is your own. You are not going to fi nd your happiness from someone else’s acceptance of you. You also won’t fi nd it in a “thing.” So many people believe that happiness is a destination. It is not. It is a journey. I often hear people say “I’ll be happy when…” Choose to be happy today. Do what you love. Love what you do. Enjoy every day. How many times have we said “Happy birthday,” “Happy anniversary,” or “Happy holidays” without really thinking about what that means? As we wish each other a “Happy New Year,” stop and think about what happiness means to you. What will you do every day to make it happy? What is going to make this year more special? All of us can be happy. In fact, we are as happy as we make up our minds to be. So, as we kick off a new year, rather than look for a new you, find that happy person inside you and celebrate their return. I wish you a year of health and true happiness!

US Midterms have come and gone. How will their outcome affect food policies moving forward? | BY B R I A N C L EM E NT, PhD, LN AN D RU DH I L EONA RDI |

U

npacking the nitty-gritty flip behind the House outcome in the midterm elections leaves issues like food and health smack in the crosshairs of strategic positioning for the 2020 election, beginning immediately. Too often, food transparency gives way to the complexities of the “politics of personal destruction” ruddered by hyperbolic discourses, corporate interests, and partisan agendas with real human needs and

64

concerns for true health being dragged through the mud. Still, the POP Campaign and the Hippocrates Health Institute continue to seek transparency and forthrightness in food policymaking and labeling. We continually seek to bust through partisan agendas on both sides of the aisle to navigate a poignant discourse on healthy food choices that carry a deep respect for your health and that of your families and children.

Clearly, the political hourglass has flipped to where the influence and involvement of women and the younger first-time voters are taking center stage. This momentum is expected to increase dramatically as political posturing and strategies more and more will be geared toward these demographics. Yet, as Democrats take over major House committees, speculation is that they will reinvigorate investigations into President Trump’s financial dealings, resulting in stonewalling on other important legislative issues. To the contrary, focusing on “the people’s interests” will foster a renewed level of encouragement that House members are willing to step away from fighting and attacks and actually carve out a renewed positive course of action and cooperation.

W Notwithstanding the House shifts, it is key to recognize that the conservative-leaning Senate remains a stronghold of power in approving hundreds of judgeships at all levels of the court system. This is paramount in cementing its conservative agenda at the core of rulings that will deeply affect generations for many, many years to come. Case in point in the food arena, as mentioned below, is the Bayer-Monsanto appeal of the glyphosate ruling. The gamble is that the deeply conservative lean in the courts will be favorable to an industry decision over a people-protective ruling, deeply affecting the health of generations to come. Cashing in on favorable food policies is crucial for true consumer health. We oppose the manipulation of food policies for political gain. Our desire remains firm in seeking true food transparency that supports sustainable healthy lifestyles for families and children. Punch-card food policymaking, with Big Ag and Big Chema leading biased agendas, remains out-ofbounds in our worldview. As consumers, we are not interested in frequent-flier mileage points in the wrong direction.

WEEDING OUT THE TRUTH

Years of unleashed pushback fury over the use of the herbicide glyphosate had boiled down to a jury’s verdict. Addressing harm by Monsanto’s Roundup as a weed killer, a California superior court ruled in favor of a school gardener, Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, who developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma from using the carcinogenic glyphosate in his work on school grounds. The judge reduced Johnson’s jury award from $289 million to $78.5 million. On Nov. 1, Johnson agreed to the modified $78.5 million award, keeping intact the guts of the case ruling. In response to calling the corporate office of Bayer, which bought Monsanto, we received its statement that the “damage awards are not supported by the evidence at trial or the law and (they) plan to file an appeal with the California Court of Appeals.” Having likely already filed by the time this article is published, Bayer further stated that glyphosate is “not likely to be carcinogenic” in presenting its position— no surprise. Bayer claims “Glyphosate-based herbicides have been used safely and successfully for over four decades worldwide….” It states that an “extensive body of research on glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides, including more than 800 rigorous registration studies required by EPA, European, and other regulators, that confirms that these

products are safe when used as directed.” It was further noted that the “2018 independent National Cancer Institute long-term study that followed over 50,000 pesticide applicators…found no association between glyphosate-based herbicides and cancer.” “I don’t think it’s a surprise that after 20 years, Monsanto has known about the cancer-causing properties of this chemical and has tried to stop the public from knowing it,” co-counsel Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says of the Johnson case. Weeding through the impact, the Bayer Company found its stockholders nervous at the preliminary verdict as their stock value dropped nearly 18 percent. Subsequently, the ruling has opened the door to others who have been affected by glyphosate—an estimated 8,700 individuals are lined up to file cases. Ian Hilliker, an analyst at Jefferies LLC in London, estimated that the bombshell fallout of “Monsanto’s liability could reach $800 billion.” Yet, this may be a very long road as it appears that appeals will reach a favorable Supreme Court.

PARENTS, “ACT NOW!”

Minimally, as a precaution, it makes sense that parents and school groups across the nation demand to get glyphosate and toxic pesticidal chemicals away from school grounds and their children. The research presented at the trial was eye-opening as studies and experts explained and validated the dangers of doses of glyphosate to our bodies and our health. HHI knows the vulnerability of a child’s growing body, which is not as easily capable to detoxify as adult bodies. The dangers of exposure to chemicals in schoolyards and cafeteria food are alarming. Give our children a chance! Send leaflets and letters to other parents, teachers, and administrators informing them of the Roundup/glyphosate dangers and ask school districts to be accountable and say, “No more!” on school grounds.

‘POTATO, POTAHTO…LET’S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF!’

When Douglas Adams, an English writer and humorist blurted in the 1900s, “It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes,” he never imagined such a weird backlash when industry actually tried to do exactly that: solve the world’s hunger problems with the CRISPR-Cas 9 genetically modified potato. However, a dirty little secret recently was revealed about the research behind the Simplot potatoes: it all was part of a fraudulent and sinister strategy.

The J.R. Simplot Company, as readers may know, is one of the largest privately held food and agribusiness companies in the United States. It considers itself a pioneer in the potato industry on a journey “to make a better potato.” 1 Recently, at the end of October 2018, one of the Simplot scientist and insiders, Caius Rommens, published a new book, “Pandora’a Potatoes: the Worst GMOs.” In his book and in numerous articles, he reveals how “love is blind” as he purposely manipulated the GMO crop-breeding technology reports in favor of the potato’s CRISPR technology. Very pro-industry and favoring “dollars” for investors, he manipulated research that GMOs are safe, ignoring their hidden health dangers and hiding critical information. He admits he thought he was “doing the right thing” for people. A rare confession of a mindset with blinders, he further stated: “Our assumption was that GMOs are safe. But my pro-biotech filter eventually wore thin and finally shattered entirely.” A “born-again non-CRISPIAN,” he now advocates that the varieties of potatoes he created be withdrawn from the market, currently released under innocuous names, such as Innate, Hibernate, and white russet potatoes. These commonly are being used in fries, chips, and similar types of foods.2

MASECA: PACKAGED WITH LIES

It has been revealed that Maseca, one of the largest tortilla makers and providers of flour for baking, has claimed that its products were GMO-free. It was discovered that the company actually lied, as its products are made with GMO corn. There also are claims of Roundup weed killer discovered in the flour. This reaffirms our need as consumers to be extra cautious with our everyday choices at our stores and markets. Cloaked truths, “hidden agendas,” misinformation, baiting and double-switches are becoming more common in manipulating food labeling and policymaking. All of us are challenged to keep up with our daily lives amid the rapid pace of technological developments and marketing strategies. We at the POP Campaign and Hippocrates continue tracking relevant food-related issues, providing truthful information and supporting those actions that have a positive impact on your health. We remain your committed resource compass to make a difference as you navigate daily healthy choices. The POP Campaign monitors policy actions and orchestrates appropriate responses to ensure that “Quality Food is a Human Right.” Please donate. 1. http://www.simplot.com/plant_sciences/innate_potatoes 2. https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/hidden-health-dangers-former-agbiotech-insider-gmo-crops/

My independent practice offers care for individuals affected by cancer. I combine my expertise as a Radiation Oncologist with the whole-body care principles I learned at HHI. My time at Hippocrates provided me with the courage and self-confidence to pursue this integrative approach to patient care.

Attending the health educator program five years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It gave me the knowledge, the tools, and the network to eventually become an impassioned vegan activist. In the last 12 months I’ve given 30 lectures on four continents.

Having followed the HHI lifestyle since 2004, I was thrilled to become a Health Educator. The international lineup of speakers brought a wealth of fascinating, up-to-date information. Spending nine weeks studying with a group of like-minded individuals also led me to develop lasting friendships.
