Let’s Go G
o out to eat, go on a hike, go see some cool art, go walk around a part of history, go pick up some tasty barbecue or a bunch of tacos — let’s make the rest of 2021 the year of going somewhere. After a year when much of the fun had to come to you, 2021 is letting us (so far, fingers crossed) go out more. In this year’s look at some of New Hampshire’s coolest stuff, we focused on reader recommendations for places to go — whether it’s a spot for a long run or a short hike or a food truck with tasty eats. Hippo readers gave us their favorites in these categories and more and we tallied the votes and gave you all the recommendations for fun things to do and yummy things to eat. You can find all the winners of Hippo’s Best of 2021 in our April 1 issue. (The list of winners is also available on hippopress.com, free to all thanks to our Hippo members

and contributors. You can find more about supporting the Hippo on our website as well.) In this magazine, we wanted to take a deeper look at some of the categories and offer more reader suggestions for great new restaurants or places to find your new favorite brew. We applaud every one who made it on this list; being picked as the 10th or 15th favorite is a big deal. So plan your summer and beyond with a little help from these recommendations from Hippo readers. The information about the places listed here comes from the locations’ websites and social media and, as the last year has highlighted, things can change, so call ahead to make sure the doughnuts or sandwiches you’re craving are still on the menu. Looking to get out and find something cool to do? Here are some ideas …

NEW EATERY
Food First-Years D
espite unprecedented restrictions for restaurants over the past year, New Hampshire welcomed all kinds of new spots to dine in or to grab takeout. Here are 10 of the best new local eateries.
1. BLUAQUA RESTROBAR 930 Elm St., Manchester, 836-3970, bluaquarestrobar.com A “restrobar,” according to bluAqua owner Scott Forrester, is a downtown gastropub offering quality food and cocktails with a “lil’” Southern flair. The Lubbock, Texas, native opened this eatery in the former space of the Ted Herbert Music School in downtown Manchester in January 2020, offering Southern-inspired items like chicken and andouille gumbo, tuna tartare and shrimp and grits, in addition to burgers, sandwiches, tacos and more. Previously, Forrester ran bluAqua Restaurant & Bar, which was in Amherst’s Salzburg Square until 2015. 2. WHITE BIRCH EATERY 571 Mast Road, Goffstown, 836-6849, whitebircheatery.com Following a brief renovation period, Cyndee Williams of Merrimack opened White Birch Eatery, her first restaurant as owner, on March 9, 2020. Seven days later, all restaurants and bars in New Hampshire were ordered to operate via takeout, delivery or drive-thru only, and White Birch Eatery had to shut down until early July 2020. But ever since then, the restaurant has been going strong, amassing a following for its breakfast and lunch items made with fresh, local ingredients, as well as an entire menu of options appealing to vegan and vegetarian diners. Try the Southwest bowl, which features seasoned quinoa, greens, tomato, red onion, black beans, avocado and a spicy ranch dressing. White Birch Eatery also offers catering for small gatherings out of an adjoining 40-seat banquet facility. 3. TOMAHAWK BUTCHERY & TAVERN 454 Daniel Webster Hwy., Merrimack, 365-4960, tomahawktavern.com The deli and butcher shop side of this eatery opened in February 2020, followed by the tavern side in early July. Husband and wife S.J. and Joanne Torres have owned several bars and restaurants in New Hampshire and other New England states over the last few decades and are also partners in Howl at the Moon in Boston and Foxborough, Mass. Tomahawk Butchery & Tavern is a spot known for its steak tips and bone-in rib-eye steaks, as well as its burgers, sandwiches and selection of Boar’s Head deli products. 4. COL’S KITCHEN 55 S. Main St., Concord, 227-6778, colsplantbased.com Less than two months after Bow native Jordan Reynolds found out that Willow’s Plant-Based Eatery in Concord was closing permanently, he and former Willow’s staff member Rob Ray opened a new plant-based concept in mid-August 2020. Col’s Kitchen, named after Reynolds’ nine-year-old pit bull, offers what he calls an “eclectic, all-American” approach to vegan foods, featuring a well-rounded menu of plant-based options, from appetizers and salads to entree-sized meals, brunch items and desserts like pies, macarons and “pie shakes.” The eatery also makes a variety of its own vegan sauces, which Reynolds is working to soon bottle and sell. 5. DIZ’S CAFE 860 Elm St., Manchester, 606-2532, dizscafe.com Longtime chef and Manchester native Gary “Diz” Window opened Diz’s Cafe, his first restaurant as owner, in late May 2020. Diz’s Cafe offers scratch-made comfort foods and home-cooked meals, including customizable “build-your-own” menus of at least one protein and up to three fresh sides. Initially, the eatery opened with a takeout-only model, handing orders out of its front windows directly overlooking Elm Street. When indoor dining resumed in mid-June, Diz’s Cafe was able to welcome customers inside for the first time.
6. BISTRO 603 345 Amherst St., Nashua, 722-6362, bistro603nashua.com Bistro 603, which opened in mid-August 2020, offers all types of appetizers, entrees and weekend brunch items out of a scratch kitchen. Owner Jeff Abellard and chef Jason Duffy are part of a close-knit restaurant team that has also run Bistro 781 on Moody Street in downtown Waltham, Mass., since 2015. Bistro 603 is nearly double the size of its Massachusetts counterpart, with bar seating, table dining, an outdoor patio and space for two private rooms. The menu, while similar to that of Bistro 781, remains diverse, ranging from small shareable plates to larger meals with optional wine pairings, as well as specialty weekly features. 7. SECOND BROOK BAR & GRILL 1100 Hooksett Road, Unit 111, Hooksett, 935-7456, secondbrook.com For Jeanne Foote, who grew up in the North End of Manchester, opening Second Brook Bar & Grill just over the town line in Hooksett in September 2020 was a homecoming of sorts. The eatery is named after the nearby brook by the railroad tracks where she and her friends hung out in high school. Foote spent more than a decade working at local restaurants like The Puritan Backroom and Billy’s Sports Bar before going to Durham to open Bella’s Casual Dining, which operated from 2012 to 2019. Menu items at Second Brook include appetizers, soups and salads, burgers, sandwiches and plated entrees, and they continuously evolve. 8. T-BONES GREAT AMERICAN EATERY 404 S. Main St., Concord, 715-1999, t-bones.com After delaying its initially scheduled May 2020 opening, Great New Hampshire Restaurants opened its newest T-Bones location in Concord in mid-September 2020. Its sixth overall, this is the largest T-Bones location yet, with an occupancy of 307 people, including more than 250 seats in the dining room and bar, a private dining room and an outdoor dining terrace. The eatery has many of the same options the other T-Bones locations are known for, like burgers, salads, steaks, appetizers and mixed cocktails. 9. B’S TACOS 372 Kelley St., Manchester, 622-8200, nhtacotruck.com This Londonderry-based food truck opened its first year-round brick and mortar location on Manchester’s West Side in January 2021. Ken Spilman, who has operated B’s Tacos since 2013, said he will also continue to operate the truck seasonally at the BP Gas Station (2 Mohawk Drive, Londonderry). Throughout its nearly decade-long run, B’s Tacos has amassed a following for its fresh Tex-Mex options with locally sourced ingredients. 10. STONES SOCIAL 449 Amherst St., Nashua, 943-7445, stonessocial.com Inspired by the supper club, or the concept of serving creative comfort foods and cocktails in a small and intimate setting, Stones Social opened in Nashua in late June 2020. The eatery is the latest venture of Stones Hospitality Group, which also owns two restaurants in Massachusetts — Cobblestones of Lowell, which has been serving elevated tavern fare since 1994, and Moonstones, a restaurant featuring global small plates that opened in Chelmsford in the late 2000s. The menu at Stones Social includes lighter bar snacks like Buffalo tenders and Chinese short ribs, as well as burgers, wood-fired skillets, poke bowls and a wide array of house cocktails. Other options include “Throwback Thursday” wood-fired pizza specials and “Social Sunday” specials featuring smoked meats, brunch options and family-style meals.

EATS ON THE GO
Food trucks T
he presence of food trucks and trailers has been on a steady increase in New Hampshire over the last few years — and provides great opportunities for socially distanced catering. Here are nine of the best locally based food trucks and trailers.
1. B’S TACOS Londonderry, nhtacotruck.com Ken Spilman originally established B’s Tacos in 2013 as a side hustle before later taking on the venture full-time. B’s Tacos offers a menu of fresh TexMex options like tacos, burritos and rice bowls prepared using family recipes. Spilman kicked off his ninth season on Cinco de Mayo — you can find the B’s Tacos trailer outside the BP Gas Station (2 Mohawk Drive, Londonderry) every Tuesday through Saturday through about October. A second truck regularly appears at several locations across New Hampshire. In January 2021, B’s Tacos opened a year-round restaurant, its first brick and mortar location, on Manchester’s West Side. In the Hippo’s Best of 2021 readers poll, B’s Tacos was also named in the Best Tacos category. 2. UP IN YOUR GRILL Merrimack, 493-3191, upinyourgrill.com Dan DeCourcey was an award-winning competitive barbecuer before launching Up In Your Grill, a trailer specializing in smoked meats like brisket, pulled pork and pulled chicken, often available as either sandwiches or combo plates with sides like seasoned fries and coleslaw. When he’s not catering for an event, DeCourcey’s trailer can often be found in the parking lot of Vault Motor Storage (526 Daniel Webster Hwy., Merrimack) — the dates and times vary but are regularly updated week-to-week on Facebook. 3. SMOKE N’ BUTTS BBQ Candia, 714-8258, smokenbuttsbbq.com Smoke N’ Butts BBQ was born when Joe Lapietro watched a man build a smoker out of a file cabinet on the reality-documentary series Alaskan Bush People and was immediately inspired to cook his own smoked meats. Today he offers local pickup at The Farmer’s Wife (20 Main St., Candia) most Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., serving items like seasoned pork spare ribs, and beef brisket and pulled pork available as tacos, burritos, sandwiches or plates. 4. THE HUNGRY CATERPILLAR Hampstead, gearyfarmsnh.squarespace.com/foodtruck Christy and Nick Ortins of Geary Farms in Chester launched The Hungry Caterpillar, a plant-based comfort food truck, in June 2020. You’ll find items like hand-breaded fried cauliflower bites (available plain, barbecue or Buffalo), black bean veggie burgers, hand-cut fries, fried zucchini and summer squash and a breaded seitan sandwich with lettuce, tomato and plant-based mayo called the “Patty Mayonnaise.” The Hungry Caterpillar regularly posts its whereabouts on social media but is most often found in the parking lot of Hampstead Health & Fitness (45 Danville Road, E. Hampstead) every Wednesday through Saturday.
5. THE FOOD ABIDES 401-7020, find them on Facebook @thefoodabidestruck New to the food truck scene last year, The Food Abides is named after the famous quote “the dude abides,” from the ’90s film The Big Lebowski. Former Umami Farm Fresh Cafe chefs Patrick Harris and Max G. Dowling parked the truck at several local craft breweries over the summer for pop-up menus that included all kinds of themed items and creative takes on sandwiches, tacos and salads. The Food Abides is due to make a return this summer — follow them on social media for updates. 6. MESSY MIKE’S BARBECUE & CATERING CO. Derry, messymikesbarbecue.com Barbecue caterer Michael “Messy Mike” Massiglia launched this 30-foot mobile food trailer in September 2020. You can find him in the parking lot of Rockingham Acres Greenhouse (161 Rockingham Road, Derry) most Thursdays through Sundays, serving up various meats by the pound, from dry-rubbed wings to pulled pork, pulled chicken and beef brisket, plus half or full rack St. Louis-style ribs, sandwiches and fresh sides. Massiglia also makes his own bottled hot and regular barbecue sauces, which are available for sale online and on some local store shelves. 7. TACO TIME Milford, 554-1424, tacotimenh.com Rosana Vargas and her husband, Reymundo “Rey,” launched Taco Time, a trailer specializing in authentic Mexican options like tacos, quesadillas, burritos, burrito bowls and nachos, in 2018. Since then, Taco Time has expanded into a brick and mortar restaurant at 11 Wilton Road in Milford, which opened in January 2021. Now known as Taco Time Cocina & Cantina Mexicana, the eatery offers an expanded menu that now also includes specialty plates, desserts and a full line of margaritas and other craft cocktails. 8. PRESSED FOR TIME MOBILE CAFE Derry, pressedfortimecoffee.com Pressed for Time was launched in December 2018, after owner and founder Eddie Sargent became inspired when visiting several small cafes during a trip to Paris, France. The small trailer specializes in fresh coffees and espresso drinks, plus customizable breakfast sandwiches that can be ordered on bagels, English muffins, croissants or Texas toast. You can find them at Seacoast Sport Cycle (129 Rockingham Road, Derry) most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, beginning at 6 a.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 7:30 or 8 a.m., and until the late morning or early afternoon, depending on the day. 9. GRIND AWAY MOBILE CAFE Derry, thegrindnh.com Brought to you by the owners of The Grind Rail Trail Cafe in downtown Derry, this refurbished 1958 Fan travel trailer appears at local breweries, vineyards and other businesses in the Granite State and is also available to reserve for private functions, offering a menu of “consciously crafted bites and beverages,” from coffees and pastries to toasts, bowls and sandwiches.

N
ew Hampshire Wine Week propels the Granite State to the global stage in the world of wine every year in January, when the biggest names in the industry from Napa Valley to all over Europe participate in tastings, bottle signings, dinners and more. But you don’t have to go that far to experience quality winemaking year-round.
1. LABELLE WINERY 345 Route 101, Amherst, 672-9898, labellewinery.com A visit to a small winery while on vacation in Nova Scotia in 2001 inspired then-corporate attorney Amy LaBelle to pursue a new venture in winemaking. She founded LaBelle Winery in 2005 at Alyson’s Orchard in Walpole before later moving her growing business to its 20,000-square-foot flagship location in Amherst in late 2012. LaBelle Winery has since expanded to an onsite bistro restaurant and a line of specialty culinary products known as The Winemaker’s Kitchen, and also serves as a destination spot for weddings, tastings, tours, cooking classes and more. LaBelle Winery opened a second tasting room and retail store in Portsmouth in 2017. In December 2020, LaBelle and her husband Cesar Arboleda purchased the former Brookstone Events & Golf in Derry, opening a new restaurant concept, a retail market, a sparkling wine tasting barn and a nine-hole golf course. 2. ZORVINO VINEYARDS 226 Main St., Sandown, 887-8463, zorvino.com Located on 80 acres in the quiet town of Sandown, this destination vineyard and winery originally began as a hobby for founders Jim and Cheryl Zanello. They purchased the property in 2000 after retiring, planting a few vines in their new backyard. More than two decades later, Zorvino Vineyards has grown into offering more than 40 types of wines grown from roughly 2,500 vines on site, and now hosts all kinds of events from private wedding ceremonies and receptions to Sunday brunches, special multi-course dinners, comedy nights and more. The name “Zorvino” combines the origin of the owners’ family name Zorzanello with “Vino,” the Italian word for wine. 36

3. ANCIENT FIRE MEAD & CIDER 8030 S. Willow St., Building 1, Unit 7-2, Manchester, 203-4223, ancientfirewines.com Although licensed with the state as a winery, Ancient Fire is better known as a craft producer of meads and ciders with options that rotate all the time. Husband-and-wife team Jason and Margot Phelps opened Ancient Fire’s taproom in March 2018. The name “Ancient Fire” is in reference to the sun and its importance in producing the ingredients needed to make their product. 4. FLAG HILL DISTILLERY & WINERY 297 N. River Road, Lee, 659-2949, flaghill.com Totaling 14 acres, Flag Hill is the largest vineyard in the Granite State. Originally on the site of a dairy farm, Flag Hill began as a winery with its first harvest in 1990, growing over the last couple of decades into a family-operated vineyard, distillery and popular wedding and event venue. Owner and distiller Brian Ferguson and his wife Maddie use the land to produce grapes for the winery, grain for the distillery and vegetables for its events. 5. FULCHINO VINEYARD 187 Pine Hill Road, Hollis, 438-5984, fulchinovineyard.com Winemaking has been a tradition in Al Fulchino’s family for nearly two centuries. At the age of 21 he inherited his grandfather’s wine press and proceeded to make his own first wines, later purchasing the land that would become Fulchino Vineyard nestled at the bottom of Pine Hill Valley in Hollis. In addition to hosting wine tastings and dinners on site, Fulchino has founded several other community events, like the Hollis Grape Festival, which has been held in the town common every September since 2017.
6. SWEET BABY VINEYARD 260 Stage Road, Hampstead, 347-1738, sweetbabyvineyard.com Lewis and Stacey Eaton started Sweet Baby Vineyard, specializing in handcrafted wines from locally grown fruit, in 2008. Today the winery sits in the middle of the Eatons’ 8-acre farm, with a production building and a separate building for year-round tastings of its wines, of which there are around two dozen varieties. 7. HERMIT WOODS WINERY & DELI 72 Main St., Meredith, 253-7968, hermitwoods.com Founded in 2011, Hermit Woods is a small boutique winery and deli crafting fruit wine, meads and ciders with classic dry European styles, in addition to producing farm-to-table cuisine out of an onsite restaurant. All of the wines are vegan, with the exception of the honey wines, and fruit is sourced from all over New England. 8. AVERILL HOUSE VINEYARD 21 Averill Road, Brookline, 244-3165, averillhousevineyard.com This family-owned winery, founded in the summer of 2017, is located inside of a restored 1830s-era barn in the small town of Brookline. Since then, Averill House Vineyard has grown to roughly 500 cold-climate vines, composed of 11 different varietals. The remodeled barn doubles as a tasting room and production center, while the vineyard itself spans more than 2 acres with patio areas popular for tastings and picnics. The winery also hosts all types of events throughout the year, from comedy nights to special wine dinners. 9. GILMANTON WINERY & VINEYARD 528 Meadow Pond Road, Gilmanton, 267-8251, gilmantonwinery.com Grace Metalious, author of the controversial novel Peyton Place, once lived in the house that is now Gilmanton Winery. On property that’s just under 9 acres, owners Sunny and Marshall Bishop have different kinds of vines and often host brunches, dinners, tastings and tours throughout the year.

ccording to the New Hampshire Brewers Association, the total number of craft breweries in the state has more than doubled since 2015, and the industry’s impact on the state’s economy continues to grow. Here are 10 breweries turning out IPAs, lagers and more in southern New Hampshire. 1. 603 BREWERY 42 Main St., Londonderry, 404-6123, 603brewery.com 603 Brewery was founded by three longtime college friends in 2012, who had met while studying engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. In 2019, 603 Brewery relocated all of its operation to its current space in Londonderry’s Woodmont Commons development, introducing a beer hall and an outdoor patio, all with a full locally sourced food menu of options like brick oven pizzas, burgers, appetizers and more. 2. ABLE EBENEZER BREWING CO. 31 Columbia Circle, Merrimack, 844-223-2253, ableebenezer.com Able Ebenezer, a veteran-owned and -operated brewery that opened in Merrimack in early 2014, is named after Ebenezer Mudgett, a New Hampshire native who served in the Revolutionary War. Many of its brews are either inspired by or named after historical events or figures. Some of its most popular include an IPA brewed with cherrywood-smoked malt called “Burn the Ships,” and a West Coast-style double IPA called “Victory Nor Defeat.” 3. NOTABLE IN NH
Historic Spots T
ake a moment out of your day to consider Manchester’s millyard past or plan a picnic in a spot rich with history. Here are some spots that offer a break from the present and a window into the past.
1. STARK PARK 650 River Road, Manchester, starkpark.com The 30-acre park is dedicated to New Hampshire’s Gen. John Stark, who penned the state motto, “Live Free or Die,” in 1809, and contains the land on which the Stark family farm once stood. Attractions include a large equestrian statue of Stark, several models of cannons and cannonballs, a memorial bench honoring Manchester Police Officer Michael Briggs, and a gazebo bandstand where live music is occasionally held. 2. NEW HAMPSHIRE STATEHOUSE 107 N. Main St., Concord, 271-2154, gencourt.state.nh.us/nh_visitorcenter/default.htm The Statehouse is the oldest state capital in the country in which both houses of the legislature meet in their original chambers. Visitors can take a guided or selfguided tour of the building; view permanent and rotating exhibits about New Hampshire history, government, state agencies and tourism; and browse the gift shop, which sells a variety of New Hampshire gifts as well as state and federal flags. 3. THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN Franconia Notch State Park, off Route 93, Franconia, cannonmt.com/things-to-do/ activities/old-man-of-the-mountain The series of cliff ledges resembling the profile of a man’s face was a popular tourist attraction at Franconia Notch State Park until its collapse in May 2003.
In 2011, the Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund created the Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza, with seven steel “profilers” that recreate the Old Man’s visage. Also at the State Park are museums with history, photos and stories of the Old Man and a gift shop. 4. AMOSKEAG MILLYARD Between Commercial and Bedford streets, Manchester, 622-7531, manchesterhistoric.org The Millyard was the site of Amoskeag Manufacturing Co. from 1831 to 1936, the largest textile factory complex in New England at the time. Visitors can learn more at The Millyard Museum (200 Bedford St.), which is dedicated to Manchester history, particularly the history of the Millyard. 5. SAINT-GAUDENS NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK 139 St. Gaudens Road, Cornish, 675-2175, nps.gov/saga The 190-acre park features the home, gardens, studios and works of American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was the site of his summer residence from 1885 to 1897. The park grounds, outdoor monuments and sculptures, gardens and wooded trails are free and open to the public year-round. The visitors center and museum buildings are open seasonally, June through October. The entrance fee, which covers a 7-day pass, is $10 for adults and free for kids under age 16. Admission is free on this season’s entrance fee-free days, which are Wednesdays, Aug. 4 and Aug. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 25.

Celebrate with a cone, a slice or a drink
H
ow do you plan to celebrate your next family milestone, the advent of a new season or just being able to get together with loved ones again? Perhaps you want to celebrate summer with some ice cream. In our readers poll, which likes to ask some of the more probing questions along with the search for recommendations, 60 percent of Hippo readers said ice cream belongs on a cone, with 39 percent taking the more cautious route of getting their Green Monster or Cherry Seinfeld in a cup. The one percent that said “both” understand how to get their waffle cone, which tied with sugar cone in the responses that mentioned a specific cone, and enjoy their ice cream at a leisurely pace. (See the recommendations for ice cream on page 28.) One of our tabulators was surprised by how much pro-vegetable response (particularly in support of broccoli) a question about vegetables on pizza received: “Vegetables on pizza are a crime against pizza, OK in the case of some vegetables or always delicious?” On this question, 91 percent of responders were pro-veggie, with mushrooms, peppers, onions, peppers and onions and broccoli all receiving significant support: “Pizza is pizza … can’t go wrong.” Some of the more interesting combinations: “Red peppers, mushrooms,

EAR CELEBRATING 76 Y
onions, fried eggplant all great on pizza.” “Always delicious — mushrooms and banana peppers.” “Broccoli & Onions & Garlic.” And of course “Pineapples … YES!” A few were more case by case about their veggie support: “Veggies are a crime except onion in special circumstances,” said one reader. “Spinach and tomatoes belong on pizza — the rest can stay in salad,” said another. “Yuck to all vegetables” said one of the few readers who disagreed. (Find recommendations on where to get a pie however you like on page 46.) We also asked Hippo readers about what they wanted to do at a restaurant now that going to restaurants is a thing we can do again. “Drink” was the big winner, with “eating with family and friends” and “relax” also making it high on the list of responses. Other responses to “I just want to go to a restaurant and …”: • “Actually eat dessert too!” • “Be in a crowded slopeside bar again and having to shout to the bartender over all the music, noise and laughter.” • “Drink all the margaritas.” • “Eat a good meal that I didn’t have to cook or clean up after.” • “Get a babysitter and drink at a bar!!!” And, speaking for the “cup in the cone” and “all the vegetables” lovers everywhere: “Order one of everything!”
