While working on this edition, we gave the producers of E4’s latest scripted reality series, ‘Desperate Scousewives’, an access all areas pass to our cover shoot with Amanda Harrington. They followed every step of the process, from hair and make-up through to the final selection of the strongest images. The shoot will be featured on the show on 12th December, and you’ll find our pick of the best pictures from the day, plus an exclusive interview with Amanda, from p10.

E

ver since the first episode of ‘Desperate Scousewives’ aired last month, heads have swivelled markedly whenever Amanda Harrington enters a room; then moments later the excited chatter erupts: ‘Do you love her? Do you hate her? And do you think the show in which she stars is a good thing for the city?”

To the outside observer, the level of attention, and intensely divided opinions, that ‘Scousewives’ has generated is intriguing but slightly unnerving. Viewing figures for the show have already topped the half-amillion mark and thousands of Liverpool residents have used social networking sites to make, at times, surprisingly personal comments on everything from the stars’ actions to their accents, wardrobes and even the quality of their hair extensions!

Some would duck for cover and wait for the furore to die down, but Amanda Harrington is clearly made of much sterner stuff. She won’t shy away from an argument on screen or off if she feels she has right on her side,

and is happy to take on her fiercest critics on Twitter, standing up for herself and her cast mates. It’s a feisty side of Amanda’s character which has certainly come across on screen.

However, as we prepared for this month’s fashion shoot with the model, which was filmed by the Scousewives crew, who have been following Amanda’s every move, it was her less obvious qualities which quickly won over the His & Hers team. We’d chosen Matou’s roof terrace as the location for our shoot, which afforded us unrivalled views of the Liverpool skyline; however, although the backdrop was spectacular, shooting in such an exposed location on one of the coldest days of the year was to prove challenging. While the His & Hers team shivered theatrically in our overcoats, Amanda strode out in a wafer thin evening dress, smiled for the camera and managed to fight the urge to shiver. She remained polite, professional and enthusiastic over the coming hours, even when her hands began to turn slightly blue, quietly insisting that she would

work for as long as it took to ensure we got all the shots we needed for the magazine. We liked her determination to get the best possible picture, and her easy banter with the team.

When we realised that, despite the weather, we had all the shots we needed in the bag, we headed into the warmth for our interview with Amanda, smiles on our faces, feeling that we’d made a feisty new fashion friend!

Five-minute Q&A with Amanda H&H: How has your life changed since appearing in ‘Desperate Scousewives’?

Amanda: I’ve been in the public eye for a few years now, but this is the first time I’ve been known on a national level. The downside is that you do get a bit of stick and people judge you without knowing what you’re really like,

but after working for free for years and going to castings and really pushing myself, and then gradually becoming more successful, it feels like ‘Desperate Scousewives’ marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life.

H&H: Do you think you’re portraying Liverpool in a positive light on the show?

Amanda: When I’ve been doing my shoots on the show I’ve tried to work with local companies as much as possible and I think I have a good reputation within the city for promoting Liverpool fashion designers.

Everyone involved in the show has put so much effort in and we really want to get Liverpool on side!

H&H: The His & Hers team was surprised by how hard-working and determined you are.

Do you think the public sees this side of you?

Amanda: I’ve always worked hard, and everyone involved with ‘Scousewives’ is putting in the hours to make the show the best it can be. If that means working till 3am sometimes, then that’s just what it takes. I just really want people to like the show and to feel like it’s a good representation of the city, and I don’t mind working hard for that.

H&H: What are your plans for the future?

Amanda: I’m looking forward to taking some time off for Christmas, then I’m hoping that there’ll be a second and even a third series of ‘Scousewives’. I’ll be continuing with my modelling and one day I’d love to launch my own fashion line.

In the meantime, I’ll just be enjoying this new chapter in my life and taking every day as it comes.

OUND George Panayiotou, the man behind Liverpool’s first five-star private members’ club, outlines his mission to upgrade your nightlife.

Y

ou may not have met George Panayiotou, the impeccably dressed entrepreneur behind The PlayGround (the city’s chic new private members’ club), but if you’ve attended one of his events at the Hilton, chances are George has already given you a night to remember, and quite possibly a hangover you’d rather forget!

Until recently, all that most people knew about George was that he had a keen eye for business (perhaps no surprise given that his family owns the thriving Ability Group, with a portfolio which includes a rather impressive array of hotels). Oh, and did I mention that he throws a mean party?

Then E4’s new scripted reality show ‘Desperate Scousewives’, on which the entrepreneur was introduced to viewers as ‘Gorgeous George,’ aired, making him the focus of the kind of female attention that would make Bieber blush.

George discreetly shrugs off any talk of being Liverpool’s most eligible bachelor, but

he does concede that appearing on a show which attracts around 600,000 viewers a week hasn’t hurt when generating an anticipatory buzz around the PlayGround launch.

However, George won’t be relying on the media hype that currently surrounds him to make his new venture a success. Instead he’s determined to put in the hours and the investment to create a destination that people will want to visit for months and years to come.

George explained: “I was taught by my father to go against the grain from an early age. He made his fortune by going into unfashionable areas of East London and converting derelict buildings into luxury apartments. Everyone thought he was mad at the time, but it worked for him!

“Today, when I talk about launching a luxury club in the middle of the recession, people

can’t wait to tell me why it will never work. But whenever someone says that, it just makes me more determined to prove them wrong. We have a fantastic location and a fantastic team, and our offering in terms of cocktails is second to none.”

George has chosen his collaborators on the project carefully, enlisting two of His & Hers’ fashion heroes, Justine Mills and Kirsty Doyle, for style advice, and he’s been just as careful about choosing the best possible staff for PlayGround, declaring: “It’s no good investing in seamless interior design if you don’t have the service. Every single detail has to be right. It’s all about value; I don’t think the people of Liverpool have a problem with paying the £500 membership fee as long as they feel like they’re getting good value for that money.” To that end, George has blown the budget on interiors, staff, uniforms, and a cocktail menu designed to knock any local competition out of the water. Naturally he is planning the launch party to end all parties. “It will be a night of fun, madness and surprises,” said George.

And once the madness is over, he would like to roll out the PlayGround concept to other leading hotels around the world. It certainly sounds like a model that would work well in London or Vegas, but we’re rather pleased that George has chosen Liverpool as the first destination on his list. X Factor Homecoming

With the support of Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, a rumoured recording deal, and a triumphant Liverpool homecoming on the cards, Craig Colton says there’s life after X Factor

W

hen His & Hers spoke to Liverpool-born singer Craig Colton, he said that his feet haven’t touched the ground since he was sent home from the X Factor after receiving harsh criticism from the judges in the first deadlock of the series.

“I can’t wait to come home to Liverpool”, said Craig, adding: “I’ve really missed the place!” The singer continued: “We were in this bubble on the show, where we didn’t see any press and didn’t know what was going on in the outside world. It’s been weird to go straight from that to non-stop gigging, but I can’t wait for the X Factor tour – the Liverpool dates at the Echo Arena are going to be huge!”

Craig added that he was still in touch with his mentor Gary Barlow, as well as Robbie Williams; both of whom have been helping him to deal with

the pressures of the past few weeks. “They’ve become really good friends. Gary and Robbie have told me that it’s going to be manic, but to make sure I keep song-writing whenever I can so I’m prepared for the New Year. Gary has been much more than a mentor and I know we’ll stay in touch.”

The 22-year-old former biscuit factory worker said he’d been overwhelmed by the support from his showbiz mentors and fellow Liverpudlians and promised that we’d be hearing more from him in the New Year.

ecember could arguably be considered as the most indulgent month of the year! With social diaries packed full of parties and events, excessive amounts of food and drink appear to surround us, with temptation at every turn. When we’re not busy socialising, there’s the Christmas shopping, Christmas markets, and visiting family and friends to consider, which doesn’t leave a lot of spare time for exercising.

It’s not surprising that the average person gains up to six pounds during this period!

New Year’s resolutions may be good in theory, but rarely last. Why not consider a couple of New Life resolutions – small changes you can begin to make today that you can commit to long term.

Begin to acknowledge certain behaviour patterns and aim to break them. Don’t give up before you have started; balance and moderation is something we all

can achieve.

With reference to diet: if you know you are going to a party where the drinks and food will be flowing, resolve to partake lightly, choosing low calorie options where possible, and drinking plenty of water between alcoholic beverages.

Before and after the event, eat lots of fresh fruit and veg, to maintain a healthy balance. And remember – it is not compulsory to try every single canapé!

It is equally important to maintain some sort of exercise regime. Even if you struggle to find the time to make it to the gym, try short workouts at home, or brisk walks. Just try not to give up all together.

Hiring our own Master-chef As Christmas approaches, we’ve been dreaming of entertaining in style with a little help from Merseyside’s hottest new chef.

his month, His & Hers caught up with Liverpool chef Steven Burgess who at the tender age of just 25 has launched his own catering company Rhubarb and Custard and has already been featured in the Merseyside and Cheshire edition of cookbook ‘Relish,’ along with some of Liverpool’s top restaurants like 60 Hope Street and Spire.

Steven has catered for everything from small gatherings to awards dinners for hundreds.

“I love creating new menus and trying things out.

We’ve done some really exciting things this year like picnic baskets for an awards dinner and Christmas is the time for something special so cooking Christmas dinner or a dinner party for a client while they enjoy a glass of champers and some carols round the fire

without having to lift a finger is a nice treat for them!”

This year, delicacies such as Christmas terrine with gammon, Cumberland sausage, baby leeks, grain mustard and apple chutney for starters can be followed by sage butter roast turkey, duck fat roast potatoes honey glazed baby parsnips, shallot stuffing, roast onion compote, pancetta wrapped pigs in blankets and a chestnut and red wine spiced jus.

If you’ve got room then a Christmas pudding tartlet with winter spiced berry compote and brandy custard is one of the desserts on offer.

ell, the lead-up to Christmas shows no sign of giving my liver a rest, with events still going strong. I, along with over 400 members of the Liverpool business community, attended the Livercool awards at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Charlotte Hoare and I were there to represent my company, not least as we were both nominated for awards. Charlotte took my ‘networker of the year’ crown; unfortunately I failed to win the ‘social media guru’ title, but I’m glad it went to a worthy winner, It’s About Websites’ Gavin Sherratt.

I went to Palm Sugar for the star-studded launch of ‘Are you the Fase’ - run by local entrepreneur Mark Lamb, and Amanda Harrington; be sure to get your name down for the chance to win £10,000 - if you think you have what it takes!

Myself and Liz Taylor organised a hugely successful (even if I do say so myself) ‘Boys Allowed’ event at the Tracey Bell clinic. The clinic was packed,

and guests were served fabulous cocktails from Bem Brasil, wine from Shawbury Vinters, and delicious Moroccan canapés from amazing new café bazaar, Kasbah. The world’s smallest portable nightclub ‘Rumours’ provided sounds. Special thanks to Jack from Voodou who beautified Liz and I. The launch of new 5 star club ‘PlayGround’ at the Hilton gave a taste of what to expect when it opens this month. Its Vegas-style luxury will rival the world’s top clubs, proving the huge lure of our fabulous city. I’m sure people will flock here to see what PlayGround has to offer.

Fish! Networking is always well-attended and this month’s event - held at Indian Restaurant Mayur – was no exception. Guests had their taste buds tantalised with wonderful offerings from Arif and his team.

And so the panic sets in. The rush of last minute shopping, the worry of having enough food or drink, the fear of entertaining sufficiently.

But it’s all worth it in the end. When you’re sat in your living room, the Christmas tree beautifully decorated (on one side, obviously.

No one will see the back, so why bother?), wearing your new pyjamas (or ‘Christmas clothes’, if you’re a Scouse girl), in front of the fire and waiting for Santa to arrive. Inevitably thinking the same as the rest of us: “I hope he kept the receipts”.
