Editor’s welcome

Health & beauty issue

Welcome

to the February issue, featuring our pick of the best new womenswear trends from p16 and new-season menswear essentials from p34. Other highlights of the issue include exclusive interviews with two of His & Hers’ beauty heroes, Bobbi Brown and Liz Earle; and, as Valentine’s Day approaches, romantics will find inspiration in this month’s Hester’s Looks feature on p26, while sceptics may prefer to flick to p40 where comedian and columnist Jake Mills comes clean about life as a ‘Valentine’s Cheapskate’. And for those who’d prefer to avoid the usual clichés, we’d heartily recommend taking a date, or a mate, to the best burlesque show we’ve ever clapped eyes on, The Martini Lounge (as featured on p32) on 17th February. We were very excited to be invited for a sneak preview of the new Laura’s Little Bakery café, which has just opened within The Home Quarter on Hanover St, before its official opening last month. This business may be only a year old, but with a host of fans including Steven Gerrard, TV and radio presenters (and, of course, the His & Hers team) queuing up for Laura’s cupcakes, we have a feeling that 2012 is going to be an exciting year for this business. As well as rounding up the best fashion, beauty, shopping and events inspiration for February, we’re already getting rather excited about March, when Rebecca Ferguson will be bringing her headline tour to The Echo Arena; Jane Grogan, our health and fitness expert will be helping us get into shape for spring; and we have a feeling that there will be even more exciting times ahead for Liverpool’s entrepreneurs with The Future Laboratory, helping businesses stay ahead of the trends, coming to town. We’ll be back on 1st March, and if you’d like to get in touch in the meantime, please visit the new His & Hers website: www.hisandhersmag.co.uk See you next month.

The Big Beauty Q&A Regular readers will know that Bobbi Brown, who founded her hugely successful beauty company 20 years ago, is something of a beauty hero for the His & Hers team. So when the chance arose to find out more about Bobbi’s stellar career in the beauty business, while looking through photographs of her career defining moments, it was a dream assignment. We hope you’ll enjoy this slice of beauty history as much as we did… words: emma hill Top: The young Bobbi outside Bergdorf Goodman middle & bottom: Bobbi on location early in her career.

with Bobbi brown & : Why did you decide to create a limited edition lip palette for your 20th anniversary? Bobbi Brown: This palette is a celebration of 20 years in the business. It features my original 10 lip colours and introduces 10 bright, wearable shades that can be blended or mixed with each other to create perfect colour. & : How did you come up with your 10 original lip colours? Bobbi Brown: As a freelance make-up artist, I was always looking for shades with a brown base – the most natural complement to a woman’s skin tone. I set out to create a combination of perfect nudes and flattering classic tones. The texture was important, too, since at the time most lip colours were overly matte or too greasy. I came up with a creamy matte, unscented formula that looked and felt natural on the lips.

His&hers interview

Liz Earle Comes to Liverpool

His & Hers found skincare guru Liz Earle in a celebratory mood during her recent visit to Liverpool, following stellar sales of her new beauty bible and cult skincare range. WORDS: Emma Hill, PICTURE: Patrick Drummond

14

E

Ever since Liz Earle launched her skincare brand in 1995, her products have been attracting rave word-ofmouth reviews. “When we launched, there really wasn’t anything between the most expensive department store brands and selfselection skincare in supermarkets and chemists,” explained Liz, “and in all my years as a beauty editor and broadcaster, I’d never found anything that really worked for my skin, so Kim, my co-founder, and I launched Liz Earle and 17 years later, here we are!” These days, Liz Earle’s most famous product, Cleanse and Polish, can be found within the bathroom of every self-respecting beauty journalist and had won a staggering 73 awards at the time of going to press. Even during the course of His & Hers’ interview with Liz, which took place at the Liz Earle beauty counter in John Lewis, Liverpool ONE, we spotted several women stocking up on the cleanser, which is the department store’s best-selling product. Liz commented: “Most companies will launch about 10 different cleansing products, but our range is very carefully edited. I’d never launch a product to stay ahead of the trends or because the accountants think it’s a good idea. We have our customers’ trust and we take that very seriously – we never disappoint.” As well as being known for her best-selling beauty essentials, Liz is also a well-respected beauty journalist.

His&hers interview She cut her teeth on ‘This Morning’ as Richard and Judy’s resident beauty expert when the show was filmed at the Albert Dock, later moving on to the BBC and ITV. Almost 24 years have passed since her ‘This Morning’ days, but Liz says she still gets excited every time she visits Liverpool: “It’s lovely coming back to the city. I drove past the Albert Dock entrance to get here today and it brought back so many great memories.” She added: “The city has definitely had a makeover since those days and it looks amazing!” Liz is often asked for skincare advice (by the time our interview had drawn to a close, a small crowd had formed around us to pose various beauty questions), and has written a series of books condensing the lessons she has learnt over 25 years in the beauty industry. The His & Hers team has been dipping into them all in a bid to get glowing in 2012, but the biggest single lesson we’ll be taking from our time with Liz is that, in an increasingly crowded marketplace in which jargon, hype and bold claims prevail, all we really want is a simple product that really works. And if you’re lucky enough to create such a product? Then Liverpool’s beauty aficionados will salute you, and in return for our devotion, all we’ll ever ask is that you promise never to discontinue it! ‘Liz Earle’s Skin Secrets’ is published by Kyle Books, PRICE £15.99. Winningwomen His & Hers speaks to the women making waves in the North West words: Amy Goodwin & Debra Williams, PICTURES: Robin Clewley

Joanna Henney

It was clear from an early age (three, to be precise) that Joanna Henney was destined to be an entrepreneur at some time in the probably not-too-distant future. Those youthful days of selling ‘paperweights’ (rocks from her parents’ garden) to the neighbours led to an early career in media management, together with her own online business, and work as a consultant for The Birkdale Clinic. This business-based background culminated in Joanna starting Origin Rejuvenation Spa in Castle Street, helped by a knock-out business plan no doubt put together with the knowledge gained from her Business Studies degree at LJMU. Whilst running Origin, Joanna struggled to find skin-care products suitable for UK skin. She explains that this is because most of these products are made abroad, for example in the USA, where people’s skin tones are different to ours – due in part to the extra levels of sunshine they receive (not that we’re saying it’s dull in the UK!). This knowledge, combined with her love of mineral make-up, which is said to be healthier for skin, led Joanna to head west, in search of the perfect formula to create the J. Henney Minerals range of make-up and skin care products that are perfectly suited to UK skin types and tones. Joanna admits that it has not been an easy time for her business, what with the recession, staff being stranded abroad as a result of the volcanic ash cloud, and the seemingly unending road works outside the salon. However, with her strength and determination along with her unerring businesswoman’s eye for an opportunity, her business looks set to prosper. www.originrejuvenationclinic.co.uk

22

I think I was always destined to set up my own business. Even as a child, I’d collect rocks from the garden & sell them on as paperweights.

Debbie Taaffe

Debbie Taaffe, who is just 48, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June 2010 and told that her symptoms had been caught too late for a positive prognosis. Since then, Debbie, who has a background in nursing, has been campaigning tirelessly to raise awareness of the symptoms of a cancer that has been dubbed ‘the silent killer’. She is a passionate supporter of North West Cancer Research’s work and said: “Although I know the work I’m doing with them won’t help me personally, if just one woman reads this and as a result her family are spared what mine are going through, that’s enough for me.” Debbie added: “I spoke to a surgeon today, who told me ovarian cancer can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms can be so vague. My advice to women is to listen to their bodies. If you have abdominal pain that won’t go away and are feeling tired and bloated all the time, don’t ignore it. We’re all guilty of thinking ‘I don’t have time to be ill’, but sometimes you need to put yourself, and your health, first.” Debbie will be joined by TV presenter Cherry Healey in fronting NWCRF’s O-Very campaign

Cherry Healey, left, and Debbie Taaffe, right.

to raise awareness of a cancer that affects nearly 7,000 women every year. Cherry told His & Hers: “I’m an investigative journalist by trade and when I found out how little people knew about this type of cancer I was absolutely gobsmacked. It’s not something you can detect with a smear test; and every two hours a woman dies of it. Research needs to be so much better, but we also need women to learn to look out for symptoms and to listen to what their bodies are telling them.” To find out more about how you can support the O-Very campaign, or for more information on how to check for symptoms, www.nwcrf.co.uk

STREET SMART

As we head into February, Liverpool’s best-dressed have been staying warm without compromising on style in this season’s chicest coats. WORDS: Hester Brodie & Ryan Martin, PICTURES: Robin Clewley

Alex, 18,

Student An aviator jacket will always make you stand out from the crowd and if it’s vintage like Alex’s little beauty, even better. With classic Hollywood glamour-themed makeup and multi-coloured floral print shirt from Topshop, Alex’s look is what Street Smart is all about.

24

Charlotte, 30, Jessica, 16, Office Manager Dressing for the weather in style is often tricky, but Charlotte makes it look easy in her blazer and trilby, both from Marks & Spencer, and matching scarf. Adding killer heels from Topshop completes the look.

Hairdresser A slim-fit leather jacket like Jessica’s Topshop one is always a great investment, and it looks great with classic wardrobe staples like a checked shirt. Jessica has added her own personality to this look by wearing an owl pendant and bright vintage floral print boots from Resurrection.

Rosie, 21,

Student Liverpool has some great vintage stores, and Rosie clearly knows her way around them! Her bag was sourced from Raiders Vintage and her coat is from Soho Boutique. As they’re both one-offs, she has the confidence of a woman who knows no-one else will pass by wearing the same outfit.

Sophie, 22,

Student Student Sophie shows us how to mix vintage and high street with this cute preppy outfit. She teams her navy woollen blazer with a pastel pink American Apparel shirt; with her chosen accessories of tan ankle boots and matching messenger bag creating a simple classic look.

Louise, 22,

Student As soon as we spotted Louise walking by we knew she was a perfect Street Smart candidate. We love the way she styled her charcoal cape (courtesy of Flashback Boutique) with edgy leather bow gloves and thick-rimmed glasses.

Here at His & Hers a satchel with a vintage vibe is very much appreciated, so we loved Louise’s battered bag. However, unfortunately you can’t get your hands on a pre-battered satchel (unless it’s vintage) so we’ve found this one for just £10 at Matalan. Satchel, £10, Matalan.

Stripy scarves are another timeless staple, and for the upcoming summer months we’d suggest a lightweight jersey one like this from White Stuff. Opting for a simple black and white colour-way ensures that your scarf can be teamed with anything. Scarf, £22.50, White Stuff.

S teal her style

A simple way to add a hint of glamour to an otherwise daytime outfit is with a more luxurious fabric. Try a silky blouse like this one, created by none other than former His & Hers cover star Gok Wan! Silky shirt, £25, Gok for TU at Sainsburys.

a

We love Sophie’s classically put together preppy look. This simple style will see you through the seasons, so recreate Sophie’s look and invest now...

Ankle boots are a staple in every woman’s wardrobe and little tan ones like these will go with almost anything. Team with simple black leggings like Sophie has while the weather’s still chilly and later use to add an edgier spin to a summer dress. Boots, £62, Topshop. As it’s coming up to spring we thought it better to invest in a blazer in a slightly lighter shade, so our style team have sourced this beautiful jacket for you. It’s under £50 and will help you sail through the nautical trend each spring/ summer season. Blazer, £49, Next.

Sophie has opted for simple black leggings, so we’ve found a pair with a suede finish at Littlewoods. Leggings, £19, Littlewoods.

If you’re after subtlety, yet still want a super-sexy appearance we’d suggest something like this pale pink balcony bra and matching mini brief from Topshop. Bra, £20, and mini brief, £6, Topshop.

Jane Grogan’s Fitness Focus Every month, Jane Grogan will be sharing her expert advice on fitness, health, mindfulness and life solutions.

T

he New Year is often entered with good intentions, and is viewed as a significant turning point in our lives where we can shed bad habits and focus on improving our lives in predominantly common areas. However, by the end of the year we are often disappointed to look back and see that not much has changed, which can lead to an overwhelming sense of self-loathing. Why not try a different way of approaching your “resolutions” this year: putting thoughts into actions. It might seem like a simple concept but one with which we often struggle, for a number of reasons. Goals or “dreams” can seem daunting and impossible, but if you break them down into a series of achievable steps and have dedication to the cause, you will find yourself closer to achieving them than you may have ever imagined. Begin by creating a mind-map: empty your head; have a “splurge” of all your ideas, thoughts and dreams; identify

28

and outline specific and achievable goals first and fill in lots of details; then make a commitment towards achieving them. Create a rolling goal timeline – you can fill in the detail of the goals further away later in the year. Use further off goals to guide your seed planting – start to plant ideas in the minds of those with whom you want to work, preparing them and engaging imaginations ahead of time. Set up rewards to feel the satisfaction of completion; an important part of the process is to recognise your achievements, as this will give you an incentive to work towards and help to motivate you. This method can be applied to any area of your life; identify your goals in each area and start taking the necessary steps needed. Let go of the past, embrace change in the present; the time is now to help shape your own future. Lunch Break Beauty Treatment

I

This month, His & Hers’ beauty quest is all about eyes.

n recent months, the national press has had a field day poking gentle fun at Liverpool’s supposed love affair with the ‘Scouse Brow’. A new generation of reality TV stars has bought into the mantra that bigger is better when it comes to eyebrows, claiming big brows, rollers, fake tan and false lashes as ‘the Liverpool Look’. There’s no denying that this is a fun, flamboyant look which is almost guaranteed to turn heads, but His & Hers was in search of something rather more subtle when we paid a visit to The House Beauty Spa in Allerton this month. The House is one of an elite number of North West beauty specialists, including Tracey Bell on Hanover Street, offering ‘HD Brows’, a method of creating perfectly arched brows using several different methods, including threading, tinting and waxing. Such is the popularity of this treatment that there’s generally a waiting list, so when His & Hers was invited to review the treatment, we didn’t need asking twice. We were ushered into the House’s chic waiting room, before being whisked off for our treatment. As the beauty therapist was waxing, threading, tinting and plucking our brows into the best shape they’ve ever been in (all of which took considerably less time than we would have expected), she mentioned that this is one of the businesses best-selling treatments. We’re not surprised! The results are subtle but noticeable, making brows look fuller, tidier and more defined,

all of which gives a more youthful appearance. To complete the effect, we were invited to trial the House’s newest beauty treatment, ‘Blink & Go, Ultimate Effect Lashes’. A new alternative to standard lash extensions, which generally take around an hour to apply, these lash extensions are applied in just 20 minutes and last for up to two weeks. We loved our new and improved longer lashes (which we will be fluttering at every given opportunity!) and would recommend this treatment to anyone who’d like the lasting results of lash extensions in less than half the time. The His & Hers verdict: We’ll be leaving ‘Scouse Brows’ and statement false lashes to the WAGs and maintaining our subtle yet effective ‘HD Brows’ and ‘Blink & Go’ lashes instead, because sometimes less is more!

Rebecca

Ferguson’s

Big Night at the echo arena

R

Rebecca, who first found stardom on the X Factor, is performing before her home crowd as part of her headline UK tour. The singer’s debut single ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ entered the UK charts at number 10, and her album (which she co-wrote) has been highly acclaimed by critics. Rebecca has also forged an impressive reputation for her live performances. Rebecca says that the lyrics to ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ are particularly close to her heart, emphasising what’s important in life, and what isn’t: ‘No money, no house, no car, can beat love’. The singer explained: “People used to say to me ‘Being rich doesn’t make you happy’. And I’d think ‘I’ve got no electricity, nothing - tell that to my empty fridge’. But now I’m doing okay, I realise, they were right. It doesn’t matter what you’ve got, as long as you’ve got love. I know that sounds cheesy, but that’s everything”.

30

I spilled my soul out. A lot of it comes from writing about relationships I’ve been in, so I think everyone can relate to the lyrics – we’ve all been there. It’s a theme continued throughout Rebecca’s debut album, ‘Heaven’. “I spilled my soul out. A lot of it comes from writing about relationships I’ve been in, so I think everyone can probably relate to the lyrics – we’ve all been there.” Certainly if sales of the album are anything to go by, Rebecca’s right! At the time of going to print, tickets (priced from £19.50-£32.50) were still available to see Rebecca perform at the Echo Arena on 17th March. hwww.echoarena.com

The countdown’s on for Rebecca Ferguson, one of His & Hers’ favourite songstresses, to return to The Echo Arena for one night only on 17th March. With her two nights at the Philharmonic already sold out, this is a great opportunity for her many fans to see her live in her hometown in 2012.

Introducing Chris & Mark’s Skincare Secrets This month, we’re pleased to introduce Chris and Mark, His & Hers’ new skincare columnists.

H&H: Which products are you relying on to perk up your complexions in February? Mark: We’re obsessed with Tracey Bell’s Restimulate (£49.99), a potent vitamin A serum which makes our skin look so much healthier and more radiant. It deals with dead skin cells, meaning that any other products you apply will go on so much more smoothly. H&H: Which beauty essentials should we all be investing in? Mark: We’d recommend a great under-eye concealer and an anti-shine powder to make almost anyone look their best! H&H: If you could nominate just one haircare ‘wonder product’, which would you choose? Chris: L’Oreal Mythic Oil is amazing – it will give your hair a gorgeous shine instantly.

R

eality TV lovers will recognise Mark and Chris Johnson White as Scousewives’ endearingly open, fun-loving couple, but for those who live in Liverpool and pay regular visits to beauty counters and salons, the pair are just as well known for their ability to overhaul their clients’ skincare and haircare regime instantly. Mark and Chris have recently begun offering their makeover and hairdressing services within the Tracey Bell clinic on Hanover Street (one of His & Hers’ favourite beauty hideaways) and have been so overwhelmed with requests for their top tips that they’ve agreed to spill the beans in a new regular column.

38

H&H: Are you enjoying your new roles offering hairdressing services and makeovers at the Tracey Bell clinic? Both: Yes! Mark: We love working with Tracey! She’s the businesswoman of the millennium – she works about 22 hours a day and is always coming up with new ideas. We also love the fact that now we’re involved people will be able to come to the clinic as a one-stop shop – by the time they leave they can have their skincare, make-up and hair perfected. It’s going to be so much fun!

This month His & Hers’ favourite funny man,

comedian Jake Mills, outs himself as a secret Valentine’s Cheapskate

R

oses are red, violets are blue, I’m a secret Valentine’s Cheapskate; come on, admit it, so are you! If you are lucky enough to be with someone you love on Valentine’s Day, then you will know just how expensive it can be to tell them you love them. It can take hours to find that perfect present and card, you know the one, not so cheap that it’ll look pathetic, but keeping in mind that it’ll be binned within days. It’s such an important skill to have and something which has to be taken seriously because, as you hand over your carefully chosen card and presents, you are basically saying, “Happy Valentine’s Day! This is how much I love you”. Suddenly romance has a price. A price much greater than in April or June. So is there any real surprise that after a couple’s first Valentine’s Day, one half will gradually turn

40

into a Valentine’s Cheapskate? “I love my boyfriend/girlfriend every day of the year, not just when I’m told to by Hallmark.” “Sure, I could spend money on an expensive gift, but where’s the romance in that? Instead I’ll make a heartfelt gift myself. That’ll mean more.” Really? More than a lovely new necklace or perfume? Sure, I’ll go along with that. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for breaking the illusion but I don’t think we should be keeping it a secret any more. If your boyfriend or girlfriend suggests going for a meal the day before or after the 14th, to “avoid the limited menu and/or crowds” or, better still, suggests making you a “romantic, home cooked meal”, then they, like me, are a Valentine’s Cheapskate. It’s OK. Embrace it. Happy Valentine’s Day. I hope you enjoyed this article I made you.

STREET SMART

The H&H team were out in force this month with the first of many new-look Street Smarts. Style Editor, Luke Trevaskis, hunted out you stylish men bracing the elements, with the help from Ami Goodwin, Julie Goodwin, Robin Clewley and Emma Hill.

Eamon, 31

Client Service Manager Although he and his friend were initially shy, with a bit of persuasion (bordering on stalking), Eamon came to his senses and shook off his coyness. His sophisticated dress sense was refreshing to see amongst the hoodies and tracksuits of Liverpool: a Reiss jacket, Levi’s jeans and M&S shoes and hat.

42

Koye, 21

Student If there was a manual of ‘cool’, I am sure Koye would be one of its authors. With G-Star jeans, hi-top Adidas trainers and a Calvin Klein scarf, Koye matches his subtle swagger with a t-shirt and jacket from Topman. This guy doesn’t even need to try – Koye, we give you His & Hers props!

Jojo, 22

Hairdresser With a style as unique as his name, this hairdresser showed Liverpool how to do denim. There is no better jumper to pair with your blues than a staple vintage cream, and with his Levi’s jacket and skinny jeans from Topshop, we felt he was certainly qualified to give anyone the fashion snip!

Kyle, 22

Teacher Up bright and early, we were pleased to see the effort Kyle had put into his appearance. Ambushed whilst doing a spot of shopping in the Metquarter, Kyle teamed his River Island jeans with shoes from Topman and a scarf from ASOS – all of this was married with a coat as vintage as his comb-over.

Robert, 22

Model/Landscaper With quite a combination of occupations, I am sure the requests for this posing gardener will be flooding in. With a Topman tee, Primark jeans and Vans shoes, it is clear Robert likes to scrub up just as much as he likes to get down and dirty. It’s a shame Liverpool gardens won’t benefit from Robert’s talent, as he was only here for the weekend.

Mark, 17

Student Although we got the impression Mark had only just managed to clamber out of bed to brave a dash of afternoon browsing with friends, he definitely earns brownie points for throwing on the right clothes. His adventurous Urban Outfitter pullover works well with his Topman jeans and muted pumps.

A good quality overcoat can stand the test of time and match a variety of looks. This black double-breasted wool one by Alexander McQueen is an investment piece at £1,195, www. mrporter.com

With the rain showers we have been having this past month I have put flat caps right at the top of my shopping list. This muted neutral cap works well with most colours. £12, Topman

I don’t usually pay much attention to the understated look, but sometimes you just can’t resist a classic outfit. WORDS: Luke Trevaskis

I would have been lost this winter without my trusted (and ever-growing) collection of scarves. My priority is warmth, so I tend to opt for wool such as this Navy Axel. £15, Reiss

Brogues can both refine a casual look and provide an instant lift to the corporate set. These distressed leather brogues by Paul Smith are £245, www.mrporter.com

With skinny jeans seemingly taking over in recent years, it is refreshing to see a classic boot-cut denim such as these mid-wash jeans. £28, Topman

His&hers guides

Valentine’s

Survival Tips S

words: Hekim Hannan

tephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds of our generation, recently stated that women were a complete mystery to him, so where does that leave mere mortals, especially in the minefield of the upcoming Valentine’s Day? During a recent discussion of Professor Hawking’s comment on Radio 4, one listener advised that, “Men need to be loved a little and understood a lot; women need to be loved a lot, but don’t ever try to understand them”. Although this is debatable, it is not a bad starting point for us men on Valentine’s Day. It’s not about whys or whatever’s, but just the effort and the end result; unfortunately for us, one size does not fit all. The starting point is always the element of surprise with thought and preparation, or at least the impression thereof. Flowers, chocolates, teddies and champagne always go down well but do individualise these items to suit the woman in question. But, whatever gifts are bestowed on your beloved, packaging

is the key: bows, ribbons, tissue paper… and the fancier the better. And deliver at work - she may pretend it’s a chore, but she will love the attention and the constant reminder of your thoughtfulness throughout the day. For the evening, if you live together, take her out somewhere nice but not obvious. There are so many great restaurants in the city now, but there has to be a reason why you chose that restaurant for her: her favourite food, the little touches, or the view. If the table was booked last minute, that information should never be revealed. If you don’t live together, pull out the stops and cook something nice, but be sure to have a trial run first. If possible, do enlist the help of one of her friends, to make sure that your efforts are not wasted. Do have a little surprise gift ready; it will start the evening off in the right way. As for finishing the evening, if you have got everything right so far, it should be plain sailing!
