WELCOME
Emma Hill (Editor)
I hope that as you’re reading this festive edition, you’re beginning to wind down for the Christmas holidays. Ideally some sort of a seasonal tipple will be involved! If you’re incredibly organised and have already planned your Christmas menu, outfits and social diary and selected and wrapped your gifts, please feel free to skip straight to p36. Here you’ll find fantastic practical advice from our new health and fitness columnist, Robyn McGlinchey, on how to kickstart your January health kick a month early without missing out on any of the fun of the holidays. For the rest of us, our Gift Guide from p22-23 features the present ideas that have bowled over the His & Hers team. I hope they work for you! From p16 you’ll find our seasonal style shoot, featuring some of our favourite looks for men and women for those big nights out. Regular contributors Matt and Jayne Littler share their Christmas must-haves from p26-27 while celebrity chef Marco Pierre White reveals his secrets for serving up the perfect seasonal treats from p56-57. If your December involves attempting to catch up with every friend and family member in a whirlwind of activity, I’d heartily recommend taking a day or two to wind down. In November, His & Hers paid a visit to the beautiful Linthwaite House in the Lake District (featured from p54). It provides the perfect setting in which to relax and reflect while taking in the breathtaking views. Alternatively, if a mini-break isn’t on the cards, just spending an hour or two at one of our favourite eateries (featured throughout the issue) should boost festive morale levels. A huge thank you is due to every reader, contributor, stockist and advertiser. I wish you all a lovely Christmas break and a very exciting 2015.

HARVEY NICHOLS, LIVERPOOL ONE, WOWS US AT A SPECIAL EVENT WORDS: Jean Hill
H
is & Hers was thrilled to join forces with Harvey Nichols to host a glamorous winter wonderland of an event at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar Wow Bar. It’s a perfect setting, with circular banquettes to relax into, gold dome lights that sparkle and a cocktail bar that takes pride of place, to add a glitter of Hollywood magic to the whole affair. It was a chill November evening, and we gathered together in the warmth and wonderfully relaxing atmosphere of the Wow Bar. The fine champagne flowed, the canapés were delicious, and the guests chatted happily to each other, anticipating the treats to come. The bar tender was ready to guide us through a master class in cocktail mixing. We sat on bar stools (which reminded me of the classic movie: ‘Bringing up Baby’ where Katherine Hepburn attempts to copy the bar-tender who flicks an olive from the back of his hand into a cocktail glass, but her attempt sends the olive sailing over her left shoulder, falling to the ground, where Cary Grant slips on it and is floored). We concocted a heady mix, deftly combining Raspberry vodka, Limoncello, Passion fruit, and bitter orange, all shaken and stirred with lashings of ice, which got rave reviews, so much so that we made more of these gorgeous cocktails for a birthday party recently. Then more pampering: I was lucky enough to sample a hand and arm massage, where the lotion applied made my arms feel like silk. Another guest enjoyed a back massage, which she said was a beneficial and relaxing experience. People arrived stressed from the world of work, and emerged from a massage in a dream-like state of well-being. We made a pact to meet up again at the Champagne Wow Bar, and we will.

HIS&HERS LUXURY
JO MALONE LONDON’S
FROSTED FANTASY WORDS: Emma Hill
This month, Jo Malone London stores unveiled quite possibly their most lavish Christmas collection to date.

HIS&HERS LUXURY
FIND YOUR SCENT OF THE SEASON FROM JO MALONE LONDON’S FROSTED FANTASY COLLECTION. 10
B
HIS&HERS LUXURY ack in July, on one of the hottest days of the year, I arrived at Jo Malone London’s stunning Georgian townhouse wearing a sundress for the press launch of ‘Frosted Fantasy’. As soon as I approached the entrance, I spotted the first nod to the festive theme – a beautiful Christmas wreath adorning the front door.
Once inside, I joined a host of international beauty journalists, some of whom had undertaken epic journeys to attend the launch (because clearly no-one turns down an invitation to a Jo Malone London Christmas Press Day). Downstairs, giant versions of the iconic Jo Malone London boxes had been stacked under a frosted Christmas tree. It was a beautiful festive scene which stopped journalists in their tracks, but it was upstairs that the magic really happened. One room had been transformed into a functioning ice rink, where the braver (and more coordinated) members of the press donned their ice skates to gracefully skate around the room on the arm of one of the models who is the male face of the ‘Frosted Fantasy’ campaign. At the most beautifully dressed dining table I have ever witnessed, guests were offered festive themed dishes and cocktails, while elsewhere in the townhouse, creative studio Calm & Collected personalised Jo Malone London boxes with festive messages. If you’re looking for some inspiration for Christmas gifts, I’d recommend this brand every time. The chic boxes and immaculate presentation of every purchase (not to mention the amazing fragrances themselves) makes shopping at Jo Malone London feel very special every time. However, if you’re specifically seeking a gift with a seasonal feel, there were a few key products which all of the beauty journalists gravitated towards. For those who love Pomegranate Noir, the beautiful limited edition bottle embellished with ‘winter frost’ is a must-have (price: £86 for the full-size cologne). Also, to create the perfect ambient scent for the holidays, the luxury size Pine & Eucalyptus Candle (2.5KG, price: £280) somehow manages to smell more like a real Christmas tree than your real Christmas tree will! I was hopelessly smitten with the House of Jo Malone London. Just open the doors to this fragrance lovers’ dolls house to reveal a selection of the brand’s most popular fragrances (price: £125). Smaller treats, such as Jo Malone London’s Christmas Cracker, featuring three fragranced products for just £32, are perennially popular, but tend to sell out very swiftly. These are just a few examples of the gorgeous gift ideas on offer within Jo Malone London stores and on the brand’s website. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or your loved ones, I hope you find the perfect present and enjoy the experience of browsing the ‘Frosted Fantasy’ collection as much as His & Hers did.

HIS&HERS BEAUTY
STEP 1: THE BASE Prepare the skin with a drop of Forever Youth Liberator Serum to hydrate and add radiance, followed by Le Teint Touche Éclat foundation in B40, applied with a flat foundation brush. For a healthy winter glow, highlight the top of the cheekbone with a little Touche Éclat before dusting the pink blush from the Wildly Gold palette over the centre of the cheeks using a blush brush.
STEP 2: THE EYES Brighten the eye area using Touche Éclat No.1 focusing on the eye lid, underneath and outer corner of the eye. Then, apply the bronze eye shadow from the Wildly Gold palette over the centre of the upper lid using a small eye shadow brush. Next, blend the metallic black shade outwards in wing like movements with an angled brush, following the lower eyelid as a guide. Bring back the colour from the outer corner to fill in the shape created. To highlight, add the light gold shade to the inner corner of the eye. Finish with a couple of lashings of False Lash Effect Mascara. For added volume, add two or three extra coats to the outer lashes.
STEP 3: THE LIPS To create Cara’s perfect pout, apply Touche Éclat around the contour of the lips. Then use the deep fuchsia lip colour in the palette. To add more volume to the lips, apply a touch of Gloss Volupte in Fuchsia Vermeil 04 to the middle of the lips.

MATT & JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES JAYNE’S OBSESSIONS: Christmas is nearly here, posing two big style dilemmas: Which lipstick should you have in your make-up bag and just how high should you be wearing your ponytail?
Jayne Mahon
Let’s start with the ponytail - it’s the look of the season, so don’t relegate it to your day off, or a Sunday morning. The one thing to remember is always to keep it high, well as high as your heels, anyway. If your hair isn’t long enough, why not try a clip-in hair piece - even Boots sell them now and remember the festive mantra, ‘go high or go home’! Now onto the lipstick; those clever gurus at Yves Saint Laurent have come up with a little hybrid lip colour and a blush. The colours are amazing and the patented ‘hidden pearl’ applicator helps you to glide the product on your lips and cheeks. Could this be any more perfect for your make up bag? My lust have is from the iconic Liverpool store that goes by the name of Boodles. With so much to choose from, I’ve narrowed down my choice to this little bit of delicate sparkle. This 18ct rose gold (or white gold) necklace is set with round brilliant cut diamonds. It’s impossible for this little gem not to complement absolutely everything in your wardrobe, so yep, I think it’s a total must-have. I hope you all have a happy and glamorous His & Hers Christmas!

HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM, TV PRESENTER MATT LITTLER AND ANDREW COLLINGE ART DIRECTOR JAYNE MAHON, SHARE THEIR CHRISTMAS OBSESSIONS. MATT’S OBSESSIONS: The Future: I bleat on about video games here all the time; I’m an addict. There, I said it (I actually don’t care) but, one thing that has blown my mind is the Oculus Rift version of Alien Isolation. As I’ve mentioned previously, Oculus Rift is virtual reality for the next generation, it’s a headset that puts you in a full HD 3D world via two stereoscopic screens attached to your face. This paired with a developer copy of the Oculus version of Alien Isolation was quite possible one of the most complete gaming experiences of my life! I got the chance to have a go whilst filming a special edition of the Gadget Show a few weeks back, and while it will cost you a pretty penny, if money is no object - do it! The sight of the Xenomorph creeping onto screen will make your blood run cold, while the child in you will leap for joy at being ‘kind of’ in a HoloDeck!
Matt Littler
The Present: Games aside, it’s cold now - bloody cold, and there isn’t really much hope of the sun coming out until, say, June. The bods at Pendleton Woollen Mills make wool stuff for proper blokes! I consider myself at least ‘partial’ bloke, and as such will be steering the good lady over the page towards their website this Christmas, or if you’re in London over the winter check them out at Boxpark in Shoreditch. Just look how manly and happy that guy is in his shirt! The Past: Stuck for that one extra gift for your boyf / hub / guy in the office you really fancy but never seem to speak to? Well allow me to interject, buy this, wrap it and watch in awe as he realises that you ‘get him’ and drops instantly to one knee with an impromptu proposal*. This is the coffee table book to end all coffee table books, and you can always put it on the shelf when the girls pop over. *Proposal not guaranteed, based on point in relationship and /or financial situation / feelings of love.

THE NORTHERN DESIGN AWARDS 2014 AT THE DEVONSHIRE DOME The Northern Design Awards, presented by Jazz Events, with associate sponsors including Trombé, was held at the Devonshire Dome, Buxton, on Friday 21st November. The Dome was built in 1779 and it’s a remarkable, classical circular space, with the dome itself vaulted into the stratosphere, and it’s a perfect setting for these prestigious awards. Shelley Bond, Events Manager at Jazz Events, depicting stellar glamour, made the introductions and handed proceedings over to Wayne Hemingway, who is passionate about design, excited about recent developments in northern community projects, and was entertaining throughout. After waving the flag for innovative design in the region, he navigated his way through the finalists in each category. Linda Barker, a design guru, was on hand to help with the proceedings, and of course it’s about the winners, though it has to be said the finalists deserve acknowledgement. It’s always difficult to settle on one winner in each category. Some of the winners: Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, Residential Architectural Practice; Stuart Frazer, Kitchen of the Year; Ferrious Ltd, Independent Retailer, and PH Property Holding Ltd, Luxury New Build. The atmosphere was electric, the entertainment and food were superb and it’s a dazzling event that seems to develop impressively year on year.

HIS&HERS FITNESS
ROBYN MCGLINCHEY’S
HEALTH & FITNESS SECRETS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP MOTIVATE YOU INTO A GUILT FREE NEW YEAR. • Keep exercising! It will be easier to keep the extra pounds from piling on if you keep those calories burning. Opt for short bursts of exertion of around 20 minutes, such as getting off the bus a stop earlier, parking further away from shops or taking the stairs to get to work. Studies have shown that several short bursts of exertion have the same effect as longer, less frequent spells of exercise. • Don’t skip breakfast to treat yourself to sweets later in the day, rather start the day with a good, healthy breakfast. Snack on fruit and vegetables rather than crisps and rice cakes, as this will make you feel fuller for longer. • Get the whole family involved by taking a walk in your local park or heading to the nearest indoor swimming pool. You can squeeze in some exercise and the kids can expel some of the excess energy they got from the extra sweet treats.
IN THE FIRST OF HER REGULAR HEALTH AND FITNESS COLUMNS, WELL RESPECTED PILATES TEACHER ROBYN MCGLINCHEY SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR FEELING YOUR BEST THIS CHRISTMAS.
• Rather than searching around the aisles at your local supermarket for pre-packaged festive food, find some recipes for healthier holiday treats and spend some quiet time in the kitchen. Not only will the healthy home-made options be kinder to your waistline, the process of creating and baking may prove more enjoyable than simply eating too much.
T
• Make exercising feel good by choosing activities that are gentler such as Pilates or Yoga. You are more likely to stick to your weekly schedule if you look forward to the sessions.
he January detox is inevitable for most of us, but why not kick start your New Year diet by adding fewer pounds in the first place? Nobody really enjoys dieting and it’s even tougher in January when the long nights and cold days really set in. Balancing your usual healthy habits with the festive season’s delicious indulgence can be easier than you think and may help to keep the stress of a busy social schedule and gift shopping at bay

LIVERPOOL IS CHOSEN AS THE SITE OF ONE OF THE UK’S MOST
PRESTIGIOUS NEW RESTAURANTS
F
or decades, London has dominated the restaurant scene, with a host of Michelin starred venues located in the capital. However, following years of investment in Liverpool, resulting in the development of the city’s thriving hospitality and retail sectors, the only thing missing was the jewel in the crown, a truly chic and contemporary destination restaurant. Amanzi (meaning water) is the result of a multi-million pound investment, transforming the former Newz Bar into a stylish, modern venue designed to put Liverpool on the culinary map. The restaurant’s owners have chosen Liverpool as the perfect location for the first Amanzi restaurant, and will then bring the brand to Dubai, Los Angeles and Las Vegas over the coming months. Guests will be given the option of valet parking and once inside the destination venue, they’ll find plenty to excite the senses within the carefully compiled selection of classic dishes with Asian fusion. The owners of Amanzi are proud to have secured two of the best executive chefs in the business and have also invested in a world class front of house team. Even the staff uniforms have been given very serious consideration. The duo behind Philip Armstrong (the Liverpool-based designers to the A-listers who are more often asked to create Oscars frocks than staff uniforms) have been enlisted to ensure that Amanzi’s hosts and hostesses are all impeccably dressed in Philip by Philip Armstrong. Director of the PK Agency, Paul Knowles, who has been appointed to handle Amanzi’s PR, commented: “There was a clear need for a destination venue like Amanzi in Liverpool. Even before the doors have opened, we are securing exciting bookings, and have been chosen as the venue for the famous Cricket Christmas Party, which attracts many of the UK fashion scene’s biggest names.” As final preparations are made for Amanzi’s grand opening, many foodies have chosen not to wait for the official launch date, preferring to beat the crowd and book their table at Liverpool’s hottest new restaurant in advance . COULD THIS BE THE UK’S MOST STYLISH CAR SHOWROOM? HIS & HERS PAYS A VISIT TO WILLIAMS LIVERPOOL’S ULTRA-CHIC NEW BMW SHOWROOM.
F
ollowing their £1.5 million pound redevelopment of their Great Howard Street showroom, Williams Liverpool have done the seemingly impossible and made a car showroom every bit as stylish as designer fashion and furniture stores. Business Development Manager, Lindsay Magennis, showed His & Hers around the impressive state-of-theart site and explained that the investment was making the showroom even more attractive to detail oriented business and corporate clients. Also, with an incredibly welcoming café and a play area for children, this is far more family-friendly than your average car showroom. His & Hers was impressed by the painstakingly considered interior design scheme, which showcases both the vehicles themselves and high-tech displays at their finest. It’s a beautifully designed space and really shows the competition just how stylish a 21st century car showroom can be!

NOVA RESTAURANT IN HESWALL, WHERE A HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM WORK IN PERFECT HARMONY WORDS: Jean Hill
A
fter a slight diversion to collect the lovely His & Hers editor, we headed for Nova in Heswall where joint owner, Jana, greeted us warmly; we’d eaten here a few months ago, and were smitten. It’s an elegant venue with restrained classic décor; original paintings adorn the walls and wonderfully twisted, gnarled wooden sculptures capture the imagination, all of which make for a fascinating yet relaxing atmosphere. The canapés (to whet our appetites whilst choosing the mains) arrived with a flourish: the dainty lamb burgers, wrapped in mini brioche rolls, were delicious, lightly cooked with a sharp satisfying flavour. I chose parsnip soup for my starter (roasted parsnips with a hint of truffle oil and a subtle not too sweet flavour). My companions settled on potato croquettes that: ‘melted in the mouth.’ They came with a mild creamy saffron and mushroom truffle oil sauce. Dipping the crisp bread in basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar (with a subtle sweetness) was blissful. I’d opted for pan fried sea bass for mains and the presentation and taste were superb. The creamy leek sauce was a perfect foil for the fish, and the flavoursome roast potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside and I was reliably informed that Maris Piper are the go to potato for the perfect ‘roasties’. We decided that raspberry, banana, and pear sorbet would be light and refreshing, and the flavours were fresh and sharp, a perfect finale to the meal. Moyo, the chef, and the Nova team cater for special events in different locations, as ‘Nova The Outsiders’ and be it a corporate, wedding, or private event, they’d love to help make it really outstanding. Moya tells me that part of what makes Outsiders special is that he will work with clients to customise menus, and he is willing and able to travel (within a wider area): 07852 553549 info@novatheoutsiders.co.uk www.novatheoutsiders.co.uk

MY DREAM JOB: Chloe McVeigh TALENTED TEENAGER, CHLOE MCVEIGH, IS GOING THE EXTRA MILE TO LAND HER DREAM JOB AS A FASHION BUYER.
W
hen His & Hers met with former Scarisbrick Hall student, Chloe McVeigh, it was immediately apparent that the stylishly dressed 17-year-old has a keen interest in fashion. Chloe smilingly revealed that Zara and H&M are two of her high-street favourites. However, rather than spending her weekends shopping, she was keen to find out about life on the other side of the counter. Chloe said: “I’ve been working since I was 15 and currently have a job selling shoes in Moda in Pelle. I have three siblings and we’ve all been taught that you have to go out and earn your own money. When I buy something, it’s good to think ‘I worked for that’”. In addition to inheriting her parents’ formidable work ethic, Chloe, who is currently studying fashion and business at college, also credits her former school, Scarisbrick Hall, with giving her the skills, confidence and, of course, the great grades necessary to embark upon her chosen career path. His & Hers joined Chloe for a tour of the school, where staff gave the former pupil a warm welcome. Chloe explained: “I loved school! I wasn’t confident when I started, but I really benefited from the small class sizes and passing exams with 100% is a huge boost. It opens so many doors for the future.” She added: “It’s such a friendly school and I used to walk down these corridors and I’d know every single person, so when I first started college, it was a bit intimidating. It’s building my confidence getting the train to college (in Liverpool) and having my own independence, though”. Chloe is keen to continue her studies at either of the Manchester universities, then work her way through the ranks as a fashion buyer. In the meantime, she’ll continue working and studying hard. His & Hers was impressed by her determination and work ethic. We look forward to wearing key pieces Chloe’s chosen for our favourite stores in years to come!

HIS & HERS MAGAZINE’S HAIR HERO:
PHIL GALLAGHER HIS & HERS MAGAZINE WATCHES PHIL GALLAGHER, ART DIRECTOR AT ELECTRIC LONDON, AS HE WEAVES HIS MAGIC TO CREATE PERFECT PARTY SEASON TRESSES.
I
n November, His & Hers was delighted to accept an invitation to attend a ‘Beauty Elite’ evening at one of our favourite haunts, the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar.
We joined a small group of the store’s most loyal customers to find out about the key beauty and haircare trends for 2015. King of the TV makeover and make-up artist to the A-listers Armand Beasley introduced representatives of Yves Saint Laurent Beauty and we were given a sneak preview of Estée Lauder’s new skincare range, which harnesses the power of rare truffles. As makeup and skincare geeks, this was a real treat. However, our highlight of the night was watching Elecrtic’s Phil Gallager showcase the new more relaxed waves we’ll all be asking for in 2015. Phil explained that following years of heavily styled ‘bouncy blow dries’, the latest look filtering down from the catwalk is a much softer look, still featuring face-flattering waves, but without the defined curls or quest for huge amounts of volume. As he spoke, Phil created a perfectly on-trend style with lots of movement for his hair model, as every member of the ‘Beauty Elite’ nodded their approval (and they were a discerning crowd!) If you’re feeling ready for a New Year change to your hairstyle or colour, we really can’t recommend Phil and his team at Electric highly enough. They’ll help you achieve a look that’s on trend yet wearable and easy to style every day.

HIS & HERS MAGAZINE’S
HANGOVER BUSTING HERO PRODUCT
SOBER UP
MEET SOBER UP, THE 21ST CENTURY SOLUTION TO HANGOVERS WHICH HAS JUST LANDED IN THE UK.
T
he His & Hers team has found out the hard way that festive fashion parties and editorial deadlines make for uneasy bedfellows, and clearly we’re not alone. With hungover staff costing UK employers a staggering £800 million as their energy levels slump following office Christmas parties, demand for Sober Up, which helps to alleviate the symptoms of a hangover, are anticipated to surge this December. In recent years, employers have been rewarding their workforce with increasingly lavish celebrations. However, with up to 17 million sick days taken in the UK each year because of alcohol, businesses are paying a heavy price for the excesses of the party season. Fortunately, Sober Up, a new hangover-busting product, has launched in the UK just as the nation’s bosses brace themselves for the fallout from office parties. This innovative new product, which was developed by Equilibrium Labs and is available through: www.sobermeup.co.uk, detoxifies the liver, sharpens mental clarity and reduces the level of alcohol in the blood - a feat that has left Britain’s top boffins scratching their heads in amazement.
52
HIS&HERS LIFESTYLE Sober Up is a caffeine free and completely natural product which has been created to alleviate hangover symptoms. It has been designed to help the body when users are in need of a bit of a detox, helping revellers to feel more refreshed the morning after the night before. Self-styled “mad scientist” Anthony Clavien has spent over a decade researching the drink. When he first proposed his idea nearly a decade ago, top scientists told him it was impossible, but recent clinical trials have blown that theory out of the water. Sober Up has been proven to reduce the average blood alcohol content (BAC) of trial participants by 40% within just 30 minutes of consumption. Incredibly, the trials also proved that Sober Up can decrease the levels of harmful enzymes that indicate liver cancer, hepatitis and diabetes. “When those first scientists told me it couldn’t be done, I wanted to prove them wrong,” says Clavien. “We spent a decade assembling a team of experts from across the globe to achieve the impossible. Ten years later we’re here with a product that is clinically proven to lower your blood alcohol level, detoxify your liver and leave you feeling fresher and healthier the next day.” But Mr Clavien says that Sober Up isn’t just a quick fix for a heavy night. “Sober Up is about balancing a good night with good health. It detoxes the liver and sharpens you up, I drink one every day. We wanted to make a product that would make a good day better and stop a good night from going bad. Cheers to that.” Natural herbs and extracts, such as ginger, peppermint, turmeric and ginseng, which have been used in Eastern medicine for over 5,000 years, give Sober Up its refreshing taste and added health benefits (with some using the product every day even when they’re not drinking as a health supplement). Sober Up stockists are bracing themselves for a hectic December as office parties drive demand for the product. They’re also seeing a surge in interest in the product from customers stocking up on stocking fillers and party essentials. However, stockists are also anticipating strong sales for this innovative new product in January when demand for gentle, natural detox products traditionally peaks.

HIS&HERS TRAVEL
HIS & HERS’ HOTEL OBSESSION:
LINTHWAITE HOUSE THIS WINTER, HIS & HERS PAID A VISIT TO LINTHWAITE HOUSE, A REFRESHINGLY UNSTUFFY COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF THE LAKE DISTRICT.
I
f you’re holidaying in the Lake District, you can reasonably expect breathtaking views around every corner. When His & Hers made the journey from Liverpool, the scenic drive through the Lakes was pleasingly but unsurprisingly easy on the eye. However, as we neared Linthwaite House, which is set in seven acres of hilltop grounds overlooking Lake Windermere, we were greeted with a vista so stunning that we stopped in our tracks. My travel companion parked up outside the hotel and led the way to the hotel’s terrace where all conversation stopped as we gazed in awe at our surroundings. Eventually the winter chill motivated us to stroll towards the hotel, which we did while occasionally looking back over the hills and muttering “my word – those views!” Once inside the hotel, we were enveloped in the gentle warmth emanating from the real fire in the reception area. The beautifully presented period fireplace was the most welcome of sights on a chilly day. Leaving the fireside with a slightly regretful backward glance, we made our way to the reception desk, where we were greeted warmly and ushered into our room.
54
HIS&HERS TRAVEL Although Linthwaite House has the period architecture and original features you’d expect of a country house hotel, every room has been given a sophisticated and subtly contemporary design scheme, with plenty of luxurious touches. My travel companion was immediately won over by the stylish room design and the very indulgent bathroom, featuring a large bath and double shower. While he took in the bigger picture, I was quietly impressed with the chic robes and array of Molton Brown toiletries – perfect for grooming on the go. Deciding to embrace a slower pace of life for our Lake District mini-break, we spent a happy hour or so reading the newspapers (something we never quite manage to find the time for at home). Then after dressing for dinner, we made our way downstairs to the hotel’s restaurant, which has been awarded 3 AA rosettes for food, ranking it in the top 150 restaurants in the UK. My travel companion selected a starter of Venison tartar, confit egg yolk and wasabi mayonnaise, a main of Steak and kidney pudding, roasted sirloin, baked swede and cinnamon and one of Linthwaite’s famous cheeseboards for the dessert course. Describing this as his ideal menu, my companion paired his food with an apparently delicious glass of Malbec. His first two courses were impeccably cooked and were declared faultless and the selection of cheeses had clearly been very carefully considered, showcasing some fantastic local produce. I chose the Duck leg terrine, smoked duck breast, quince and ginger bread as a starter, savouring every mouthful of this delicious dish, then made my choice from a selection of Linthwaite’s beautiful delicately flavoured fish dishes for my main course. For dessert, I pilfered some of my companion’s cheeses, so can vouch for their quality. Having demolished what was declared one of our all time favourite dinners, we retired to the fireside for a drink or two before bed. After a thoroughly relaxing day, we began day two of our Lake District break at a leisurely pace, reading the Sunday papers before tucking into our delicious Linthwaite breakfasts. After a walk around the hotel’s ‘tarn’ (or small lake) we set out to tour the Lakes. The weather may have been bracing, but it was a real privilege to enjoy a series of lakeside views without having to fight our way through the kind of crowds of sightseers that the Lake District can attract in the summer months. On the drive home we reflected on the fact that although we’d stayed at Linthwaite for a mere one-night, making this the briefest of breaks, we felt as if we’d condensed a week’s worth of relaxation and indulgence into a few short hours. If your schedule doesn’t allow for a long holiday, you’ll be surprised by just how swiftly Linthwaite will help you to relax and unwind, sending you back home feeling if not like a new person at least like a considerably less stressed person!

FROM GREENGROCER TO CITY CHIC DINING -
THE BILL’S STORY
I
f you live in Liverpool you’ve probably already spotted Bill’s, the warmly lit and attractively decorated new restaurant which has recently opened its doors opposite the Hilton hotel. The Liverpool ONE eatery is already attracting a steady stream of customers all day long, and the His & Hers team were keen to find out what’s making the restaurant so popular. We booked our table early on a Friday night when Bill’s had a lovely buzz, with couples and families at the surrounding tables all seemingly rounding off the week in a suitably celebratory mood. We were greeted by Becky and Matt, who were both warm, knowledgeable and efficient, and were ushered to a table upon which we spotted a single lemon. Noticing my dining companion and I sharing a bemused glance, Becky explained that it’s customary to mark table reservations with a lemon as a nod to Bill’s origins – the restaurant group started with a single greengrocer’s store in Lewes, East Sussex. We shared a starter of rosemary bread, served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar (the bread was fresh and delicious and the flavours of the oil and vinegar perfectly balanced). I then opted for the avocado, bacon and spinach salad, which I’ll certainly be ordering again, while my dining companion couldn’t resist some Friday night indulgence, ordering from the Grills and Steaks menu. Despite declaring ourselves far too full to contemplate a dessert course, Becky described the warm mini cinnamon doughnuts with strawberries and dipping chocolate and that week’s special (which we won’t describe as it’s no longer available, so it would just be cruel!) with such enthusiasm that we were powerless to resist. We ended the evening by perusing Bill’s deli section, which is ideal for sourcing gifts for foodies (or for yourself). Overall we were impressed by the reasonably priced casual menu. The food was good, the decor inviting and the service excellent. We’ll definitely be back soon.

T IS FOR TEMPTATION
and it’s on the menu at the Malmaison
O
f course the first response to T is for Temptation is the Oscar Wilde quote: ‘I can resist anything except temptation’. No argument there. Before I rave about the afternoon tea, it’s worth mentioning that the ‘Mal’ does great deals on gorgeous cocktails too.
WORDS: Jean Hill
His & Hers had an invitation to take part in a tea ceremony. Afternoon tea was a family tradition when I was growing up: we drove around Wales on a Sunday, just because we could, and stopped off at the Brook Mollington Banastre and that set the bar quite high, in terms of exquisitely filled sandwiches and delicious pastries. There is a very warm welcome indeed when you walk into the Mal, especially when the rain is driving down and the wind is chill. There is a brazier glowing golden bright and dispensing warmth to greet you, and the bar and dining areas are both elegant and comfortable. The backdrop is the River Mersey, and on grey days, to be in the glowing warmth looking out, makes the view seem chiselled and stunningly impressive. There are choices: Cream Tea; Full Afternoon Tea; or Champagne Afternoon Tea. I’m definitely going back for Bubble Time Champagne when I’m not driving. I have to say that the ham, spring onion and cheddar quiche is as good as I ever tasted, rich with fine flavour. The strawberry tart has crème pâtissière filling which is a delight. The scones with cream and conserve are essential ingredients in the mix and do not disappoint. At £15 for Full Afternoon Tea, this is a very affordable treat. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. It’s a great place to be on a wintry day, perhaps after Christmas shopping, or simply to enjoy a relaxing hour (or two) in fine surroundings, embracing the great tradition of afternoon tea. I’d heartily recommend it.

WELCOME
HIS & HERS FOUND A WARM WELCOME ON A COLD WINTER’S DAY AT TRATTORIA 51, ONE OF LIVERPOOL’S MOST POPULAR ITALIAN RESTAURANTS.
I
f you’re visiting Liverpool, you’re likely to be enticed by the bustling streets of Liverpool ONE or the Albert Dock colonnades. However, venture a little further into the city, to Old Hall Street at the heart of the business district, and you’ll find Trattoria 51, a hidden gem serving up Italian comfort food at its finest. My dining companion and I visited Trattoria 51 with three children in tow and after being ushered to a table which offered pleasing views of the sweeping staircase and striking photography decorating the walls, we all set about the serious business of perusing the menu. Call us predictable, but we all succumbed to the temptation of ordering classic Italian pizzas. They were light, flavoursome and delicious and when a passing waiter asked the children for their verdict, they gave a unanimous five star rating, declaring them the best pizzas they’d tasted. Despite demolishing their pizzas, the children dug deep to tackle a dessert course of warm chocolate brownies served with vanilla ice cream. Our party left Trattoria 51 with our appetites completely sated feeling that we’d been very well looked after by the friendly but unobtrusive team. You’ll find plenty of Italian restaurants in Liverpool offering more quirky, contemporary menu options, but sometimes what you really want are classic Italian dishes like pizzas and pastas immaculately cooked and served up with a smile. When it’s this that you’re seeking, it’s well worth leaving the shoppers behind and making a beeline for this quietly impressive restaurant.

A NEW HATTON GARDEN EATERY
WITH HEART
HIS & HERS FOUND MUCH TO LIKE AT BARLEY & BEANS, LIVERPOOL’S FRIENDLY NEW COFFEE BAR AND RESTAURANT.
O
pening a new restaurant as an independent venture must take a huge leap of faith. However, the owner of Barley and Beans, Nick Strauss, is making it look much easier than most. When His & Hers arrived at the newly opened venue with three ravenous children in tow, the team extended an incredibly warm welcome to our party. We were seated in a cosy corner and even before we’d ordered lunch, the arrival of immaculately presented milkshakes for the younger members of our party provoked smiles all round (and quite possibly an envious stare or two from the grownups!) The well briefed Barley & Beans team take plenty of time to tell customers about the highlights of the menu and ‘The Master’ full English breakfast proved a big hit (although we’re sure the slightly lighter ‘Apprentice’ breakfast is also lovely.) We’d visited the popular eatery for lunch, but spotted plenty of groups simply snacking on the ludicrously good home-made nachos with melted cheese and guacamole or ordering beers, coffees or cocktails.
The venue has a laid-back feel and staff make it clear that they’re just as happy rustling up three course dinners (or their famous Sunday roasts) as they are serving their signature coffees and cocktails. There’s no pressure to make a food order and even if you do there are plenty of light and affordable snacks on offer. Our party couldn’t resist ordering one of Barley and Beans’ triple-stacked American buttermilk pancakes with banana, strawberries and warm Nutella spread. In our opinion it would be worth leaving the comfort of your home and braving the cold for this treat alone! Overall, we were smitten with the relaxed ambiance, incredibly warm and friendly service and the personal touch at this welcoming venue (where the owner can often be spotted helping out behind the bar). This place was made for lazy Sundays, that one drink that turns into several and those long conversations that are always at their best when food and drink is involved. We’ll definitely be paying a return visit to our new home from home.

CREATING A SENSE OF OCCASION AT
PANORAMIC 34
FOR FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS, WE DEFY YOU TO FIND A ROOM WITH A VIEW MORE DAZZLING THAN THOSE SEEN FROM PANORAMIC 34, ONE OF THE UK’S HIGHEST RESTAURANTS.
E
ven if you’re simply visiting Panoramic 34 for after-work cocktails and bar snacks, once you gaze out at those mesmerising views over the Mersey, you can’t help but feel special. It would be worth making the journey to Panoramic 34 for the sights from those floor-to ceiling windows alone. However, there’s no denying that the fantastically well stocked bar, lovingly prepared cocktails, talented chefs and incredibly well briefed waiting staff add a certain something to the Panoramic experience. His & Hers visited this longstanding favourite for a leisurely dinner, making our selection from the À la Carte menu. A starter of scallops with white bean purée, black pudding and smoked bacon was conversation stoppingly good.
(This dish was still on the menu at the time of going to print and we really would recommend it). The venison with fondant potato, crushed suede and bourguignon sauce also impressed and even if your appetite has been sated with two courses, we’d highly recommend digging deep and powering through to order one of Panoramic 34’s beautifully presented desserts. They never disappoint. We’d recommend the Christmas Assiette (£10 per person or £16 for two). It’s undeniably diet-bustingly indulgent, but the presentation and flavour combinations make this a dessert you’ll remember. His & Hers’ dining companion discouraged taking Instagram pictures of said dessert, but we really wouldn’t judge you if you did – it’s a little work of art. Whether it’s for a single after work drink, a celebration or a dinner à deux, we’d always recommend paying a visit to Panoramic 34. There’s something about that vista that makes the enjoyment of great food, drink and conversation even more intense and that can never be a bad thing.

THE SENSATIONAL
HOPE STREET
RESTAUR ANTS DON’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN 60 HOPE STREET, ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF LIVERPOOL’S GEORGIAN QUARTER.
R
egular readers will know that the His & Hers team love great food every bit as much as we love fashion and beauty – and that’s a lot. We’re easily led to the latest eatery and are always adding new favourites to our list. However, 60 Hope Street always calls us back. There’s something about the elegant Georgian architecture, the unobtrusive decor and the memorable food and service that warrants more than one visit. Unlike many city centre restaurants, 60 Hope Street has an incredibly relaxed ambiance and you never get the sense that the waiters are silently urging you to hurtle through each course so they can seat the next set of guests. Once settled at our table, we ordered a dark rum and ginger and a glass of Malbec. Both were served in really lovely glassware – a small touch which made sipping our drinks feel just a little more special. Starters of diver caught scallops were utterly impressive and my dining companion’s grilled fillet of Cumbrian beef was declared outstanding. Cooked to perfection exactly as specified, the beef was a clear highlight of the night, which we found ourselves discussing weeks after our visit to this family-run restaurant. This restaurant has been winning awards and rave reviews (much like this one) for over a decade, which is a considerable achievement in such a fickle and competitive industry. If you haven’t visited 60 Hope Street yet, please do. It’s a new favourite haunt just waiting to be discovered.

MY
D EPASSIONS SIGN EVENT MANAGER AT JAZZ EVENTS, SHELLEY BOND, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PRESTIGIOUS ANNUAL NORTHERN DESIGN AWARDS, REVEALS HER OWN DESIGN PASSIONS.
THE DEVONSHIRE DOME, BUXTON. This was my chosen venue for this year’s Northern Design Awards. A true testament to fine British architecture, it’s a stunning space.
CLASSIC BLACK LOUBOUTIN COURTS. So comfortable and ‘wear with anything’. Every girl needs a pair.
JAN CONSTANTINE. Any piece from Jan’s collections warms a room, no matter how basic or minimalist the decor. I’m a huge fan of her China Black Collection.
LEVI 501’S. My all time favourite jeans - so wearable and flexible. I have four pairs in four colours.
TAG HEUER WATCHES. My partner bought me a Tag five or six years ago for my birthday and I wear it every single day. It’s sleek and stylish with tiny diamonds inlaid in the face for a little bit of glam - definitely my favourite present ever!
