Welcome

to the first issue of His & Hers magazine, Liverpool’s new monthly glossy for the city’s most stylish men and women, brought to you by the editorial team behind Gossip magazine. After receiving countless emails from Liverpool men asking why they were continuously overlooked in the style pages, we decided it was about time we stopped pretending it’s only women who care about how they look. The result? His & Hers was born. Our first men’s fashion story was shot by Liverpool photographer Matt Ford (one of the rising talents featured in our ‘Hot 100’). Matt also shot our twin ‘His & Hers’ covers. When not behind the lens, Matt can generally be found writing: firecrackerfashion.blogspot.com one of our favourite places to find out who’s been doing what and (just as importantly) what they were wearing while they were doing it! Over the past month the team at His & Hers has been taking stock of the people, places and things that are set to shape our year. You will find them all in our ‘Hot 100’ from p18. Also this month we looked back on our highlights of 2010, including Gossip’s Help For Heroes Ball (from p34). Inspired by this event we’ll be hosting another major charity ball in autumn. Please look out for our February issue in which we’ll be revealing more about our black-tie event as well as unveiling the latest fashion trends. See you next month...

HIS&HERS ENTERTAINMENT

SHOW-STOPPERS --------------------------Last month three famous visitors to the city revealed all to the His & Hers team in the first of our regular mini-interviews.

THE WORLD’S MOST STYLISH ‘BAG LADY’

IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT LONDON WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION. Read on to find out what Zandra Rhodes really thinks of Liverpool’s fashion credentials, how Tina O’Brien recovered from her Strictly Come Dancing ‘breakup’ and why Liz McClarnon had to overcome her fears to take to the stage at the Echo Arena. 6

When internationally renowned fashion designer Zandra Rhodes paid a visit to Liverpool to unveil her new handbag collection (which is stocked exclusively at Boudoir Boutique, Cavern Walks) she immediately attracted a large crowd of young fashionistas all clamouring to have their handbags signed. Zandra told His & Hers: “It was all quite wonderful – the girls at Boudoir Boutique were fabulous and it’s always good to meet your audience. I spend a lot of time travelling between London and America, so it was a real treat to come to Liverpool. There were so many young, hip girls at the Cavern Walks shopping centre and I enjoyed browsing in Boudoir Boutique. I think it’s very important to remember that it’s not all about London when it comes to fashion.” Zandra’s new handbag designs are all modestly priced, and the designer commented: “In today’s economic conditions I think it’s very important to find new ways to enable people to access your designs. As well as the handbag collection I’ll be bringing out a range of scarves and stoles which will be more affordable and I’ve also designed a collection for Millets.” The designer said that her time in Liverpool had left her feeling energised and excited by the Scouse approach to style. We just hope she’ll be paying us another visit for a dash of inspiration very soon!

LIVERPOOL’S NEW DANCING QUEEN

HITTING THE HIGH NOTES While preparing for her recent appearance in Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of the Worlds at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, Liz McClarnon joined the His & Hers team for an informal chat in the city. Former Atomic Kitten Liz said that following her years in a girl band she felt surprisingly relaxed about singing in front of such large audiences alongside her co-stars Jason Donovan and X-Factor’s Rhydian. The only aspect of the production that really daunted her was conquering her fear of heights. In one scene she’s suspended 30 ft above the stage, which is clearly not Liz’s idea of fun. However, with her performances so far attracting rave reviews it seems that the actress and singer is taking it all in her stride.

When His & Hers caught up with former Coronation Street star Tina O’Brien, who will be appearing in Strictly Come Dancing – Live! At the Echo Arena from 24th-26th January, the bubbly actress confessed that she wasn’t feeling on top form after spending a sleepless night looking after her poorly daughter Scarlett. Despite this, Tina was soon making us laugh with stories about her Strictly Come Dancing co-stars and her giggled confession that being voted off the show was “like a proper break-up.” Tina revealed that for a few months Strictly had taken over her life to such an extent that she half believed that she was a professional dancer, and that after being voted off she’d had to resort to the usual post break-up measures of eating large volumes of ice cream and drowning her sorrows. Happily she’ll be dusting off her dancing shoes again for her appearance at the Echo Arena and Tina announced that she can’t wait to perform for her “home crowd” on the northern leg of the tour. We’ll be voting for you, Tina.

WOMEN’S BEAUTY

NUTRITIVE LIP BALM, SISLEY

LIP-TREATMENTS

This lip balm is perfect for a touch of luxury and looks great in your make-up bag. The balm comes in a glass jar and is unscented. As it’s quite pricey it would make a great night cream especially in the winter months. Since using, I have noticed no peeling and my lips are plumper, when normally in these arctic conditions my lips would be in a right state. Sisley products are fantastic and their lip balm is no exception, leaving my lips with a lovely rosy glow.

ON TRIAL

This month the His & Hers beauty panel puckers up to put the best-selling lip treatments on the market through their paces

REVIEWER: SHARON SIMONS

(Malmaison Liverpool’s Business Development Manager)

PROTECT ME BEESWAX LIP BALM When I first applied this lip balm, I found it to be quite hard and a bitty so I was unsure if I liked it. After a while I tried it again and realised it was just cold and goes on much more smoothly when it is at room temperature. It has a light honey and lemon scent and does feels really nourishing to dry lips. It also adds a soft sheen so you could wear on its own or under a lip gloss for added moisture.

REVIEWER: KAREN DEAS (Account Manager at Clarity Creation)

STAR RATING 3.5/5 PRICE: £5.00

JO MALONE VITAMIN E LIP CONDITIONER This nicely packaged lip treatment is part of Jo Malone’s Vitamin E range, which has developed a cult following amongst beauty junkies. The lip conditioner (which has a gel-like texture) tingles slightly when you first apply it and instantly made my lips look smoother and more moisturized. It provides the perfect base for lip colour and doesn’t require regular top-ups. Overall, one of the best lip treatments I’ve tried in years, and as you only need to apply a tiny amount I didn’t feel too guilty about the price.

REVIEWER: SHELLEY BOND

(Event Manager, Jazz Publishing)

STAR RATING 5/5 PRICE: £22

8

STAR RATING: 4/5. PRICE: £33.75

PALMER’S COCOA BUTTER FORMULA MOISTURISING LIP BALM

CARMEX LIP BALM

Now we all know that Carmex isn’t the most flash of lip balms; however nobody can deny that it is a complete classic. The packaging isn’t slick, but that unmistakable yellow tube is so easy to locate in a handbag full of receipts, umbrellas and anything else you may have lurking in the depths of dark leather! After using this lip balm for a few weeks my lips felt super-soft and utterly kissable. Overall, this is a cult beauty classic at a bargain price.

After over-indulging my sweet tooth at Christmas I’m keen to find healthier ways to satisfy my chocolate cravings this January. I’ve long been a fan of Palmer’s Cocoa Butter body lotion, so I had high hopes for this bargain balm. When I first applied it I was impressed with the scent (which is sweet, but more subtle than you might expect). My only criticism? The old-fashioned packaging doesn’t look very glamorous when you pull it out of your handbag - not that you can complain at this price!

REVIEWER: HESTER BRODIE

(His & Hers’ Style Editor)

STAR RATING 5/5. PRICE: £5.00

REVIEWER: EMMA HILL (His & Hers’ Editor )

STAR RATING: 4/5 PRICE: FROM £1.49

NÛXE ‘RÊVE DE MIEL’ LIP BALM

PHILOSOPHY ‘KISS ME TONIGHT’ INTENSE LIP TREATMENT

As the temperature drops and the central heating goes on the inevitable happens - horrible, dry, flaky lips, so I am always on the look-out for a lip balm that offers the perfect combination of texture, moisture and shine. The Philosophy lip treatment comes in a gorgeous little pot which, despite being a little difficult to apply if you have long nails, is smooth and smells divine. Once applied it felt like it really maintained the natural moisture in my lips without being too shiny. REVIEWER: NATALIE STEWART (Account Manager at Think Publicity)

HIS & HERS RECOMMENDS:

BEST PACKAGING: BOBBI BROWN LIP BALM PULL THIS BABY OUT OF YOUR HANDBAG WITH A FLOURISH! PRICE: £14

With the depth of winter most certainly upon us there is no better time to invest in a decent lip treatment. Nûxe, a Parisian skincare brand, offers a lip balm that claims to repair and nourish your lips with honey and precious oils. The fact that it has been tested in conditions of extreme cold in Canada was what really won me over, though. The balm is concentrated which makes for a very thick texture when you apply and it has a lovely honey and citrus scent.

REVIEWER: EMMA GRIFFITHS (His & Hers’ writer)

STAR RATING: 4/5. PRICE: £10.00

STAR RATING: 4/5 PRICE: £22.00 (as part of a two-piece set).

STREET SMART

ACCESSORIES ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND AND LUCY CLEARLY KNOWS THIS, EFFORTLESSLY TEAMING HER CUTE OUTFIT WITH THIS FANTASTIC FAUX FUR TRIM HAT, (BORROWED FROM HER MOTHER). BUT DON’T WORRY WE’VE FOUND A MATCH FOR YOU IN JANE NORMAN. HAT, £12, JANE NORMAN.

As fashionistas it’s important to draw inspiration from what others are wearing, so with this in mind the His & Hers team hit the streets of Liverpool to check out what’s hot on the high street.

A GIRL WITH SO MANY CUTE THINGS NEEDS A CUTE PLACE TO STORE THEM, RIGHT? SO KEEPING WITH THE CUTE AND COSY THEME WE’VE FOUND THIS FAUX SHEEPSKIN SATCHEL TO COMPLETE THE LOOK. SATCHEL, £35, ACCESSORIZE.

WORDS: HESTER BRODIE PICTURES: ADAM KENRICK

S teal her style

This month we sent our Style Editor Hester Brodie to the shops to show us how to recreate Lucy, our favourite street stylista’s, look.

LUCY, 16, STUDENT

Festive chic at its best! Lucy teams her Zara jumper with highwaisted shorts, sheer tights and knitted over-the-knee socks, accessorising with cute gloves, flat Kurt Geiger boots and her mums faux-fur hat. This look is cosy and sexy – winter chic sorted.

12

MICHELLE, 22, STUDENT

With a statement jacket like this it would have been hard not to spot Michelle, and it would have been easy for her to overdo the look. However as she’s kept the rest of the outfit simple Michelle scores high fashion points for letting the jacket do the talking. His & Hers salutes you.

CAT, 19, LIBRARIAN

Vintage inspiration means Cat pulls of androgynous country chic in style. Borrowing her boyfriend’s shirt and teaming it with these retro finds and classic Barbour jacket, Cat has kept the colour palette simple and pulls off the look easily - top marks!

ANNA, 24, DOCTOR

Showing us how to achieve sophisticated glam this season is Anna. Camel cape? Check; muted wedges? Check; crimson lips? Check. Anna has ticked all the boxes with her Topshop cape and sophisticated colour palette and has finished the look off with ruby red lips. Perfect.

SOPHIE, 23, FASHION DESIGNER

As a fashion designer it’s your duty to ooze cool and 23-yearold Sophie didn’t disappoint. We loved everything about her look, from those rolledup jeans to her vintage shirt, and with a nod to the current mega-trend leopard print. This girl has style and we love it!

NILOO, 14, STUDENT

At just 14 it’s clear Niloo has a passion for fashion. Her daring style made her stand out from the crowd. Wearing her dad’s shirt and lace tights accessorised with librarian chic glasses and flat laceups its clear Niloo is one to watch.

LUCY’S LOOK WOULDN’T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT HER SUPER CUTE JUMPER, HOWEVER AS WE’RE NOW IN JANUARY LUCY’S FESTIVE FIND IS, WELL, A LITTLE TOO FESTIVE! SO WE’VE OPTED FOR THIS CROPPED MOHAIR STYLE JUMPER IN NEUTRAL GREY. PERFECT FOR THIS TRASITIONAL WEATHER. CROPPED JUMPER, £16, GEORGE AT ASDA

THE ONLY WAY TO COPE IN THESE SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES IS LAYERING. FROM T-SHIRTS TO SOCKS, MORE IS MOST DEFINITELY MORE! AND LUCY HAS MASTERED THIS TREND WITH HER SHEER TIGHTS AND OVER-THEKNEE SOCKS – SEXY AND COSY. WE SALUTE YOU! SOCKS, £9.50, M&S.

IF YOU CAN’T QUITE AFFORD THESE GORGEOUS KURT GEIGER BOOTS (IT IS JANUARY!) WE’VE FOUND AN EQUALLY COOL STUDDED PAIR FROM MATALAN, A SNIP AT JUST £18. WE’LL TAKE TWO! BOOTS, £18, MATALAN.

WITH ONE CUTE ACCESSORY CLEARLY NOT ENOUGH, LUCY ADDS THESE KNITTED GLOVES TO HER OUTFIT. SO WE WENT OUT IN SEARCH OF A SIMILAR PAIR AND FOUND THESE GORGEOUS FINGERLESS PATTERNED ONES – ADORABLE. ‘LOVE’ GLOVES, £17.50, WHITE STUFF.

DENIM SHORTS ARE A WARDROBE STAPLE AS YOU CAN CARRY THEM THROUGH EVERY SEASON. LUCY’S HIGH-WAISTED ONES ARE SURE TO GIVE ANY OUTFIT AN EDGE, SO WE’VE FOUND A SIMILAR PAIR IN NEUTRAL GREY AT TOPSHOP. SHORTS, £33, TOPSHOP.

beautiful children’s clothing and gifts at reasonable prices quickly became a reality. Their aim was to create an enjoyable shopping experience for parents and their children, whether shopping in the store or online. Recognising that taking your children into Liverpool and Manchester for an afternoon’s shopping was not a young mum’s idea of ‘fun’ the sister-in-laws wanted their store to provide a genuine alternative to the high street, offering all the home comforts that a young mum needs. And the result? A resounding success. Just Add Kids has a play area to keep your little ones amused while you shop, convenient free parking just adjacent to the shop - so that you don’t have to carry your child halfway across town, as well as child friendly

Editor

Hester Brodie has been finding out about two local businesses with family at their heart. NIKKI FREER, OWNER OF MILLISONBOUTIQUES.CO.UK When Nikki Freer wanted to find some new items for her holiday wardrobe she didn’t expect to find herself a whole new career move! Six years ago Nikki fell pregnant with her first child and when taking her first holiday with her bump she set about looking for inspiring swimwear and luxurious maternity loungewear to take away with her. However after a day of scouring the shops she still hadn’t found anything that would fit the bill, so after a few brainstorming days, Nikki had mapped out her new business idea www.millisonboutiques.co.uk, an online store where shopping for maternity loungewear and swimwear is made easy. Nikki then set about investing all of her time and energy (not to mention cash!) into creating new and inspiring maternity collections. She made sure that the styles Millison Boutique offered meant that you didn’t have to compromise your personal style when shopping for maternity – it’s only your body that’s changing, not you! When we asked her how she coped setting up the business, whilst pregnant she responded with a laugh ‘The journey has been a bumpy one. And whilst I know it’s a cliché – I have certainly learnt some hard lessons along the way. From sourcing manufacturers to pitching to national high street stores – there are certainly some

14

THE AIM WAS TO CREATE AN ENJOYABLE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE FOR THE PARENTS AND CHILDREN tricks I wish I’d known earlier.’ However she still maintains that having her own business, though daunting and frustrating at times has all been worthwhile. She recalls seeing her collection in a leading London boutique for the first time and remembers ‘…feeling as though I wanted to tell everyone in the store that this was my clothing range!’ Now that has got to feel good, right? Being a busy mummy with two children and a third child on the way certainly makes for a varied life! One moment she is running around thinking about work objectives and deadlines to meet when suddenly the ‘work bubble’ bursts and she’s on her hands a knees with her daughter when there is an urgent requirement for her to ‘help find Barbie’s shoe!’ Nikki admits that her work life balance might ‘not be for everyone’ but she has found her work life balance, and we think that’s the most important part. www.millisonboutiques.co.uk

KATHRYN & REBECCA LLOYD, OWNERS OF CHILDREN’S CLOTHING COMPANY JAK

HALTERNECK SWIMSUIT, £25, FROM MILLISON BOUTIQUE

JB POLKA DOT DRESS, NRIMORRIS, REDBRICK

Ever find shopping with the kids a complete nightmare? Is the two-year-old crying in a pushchair whilst the other is playing peek-aboo through clothing rails? You’re really trying to draw in your five-year-old daughter with a pink sparkly dress but she’s having none of it… If this sounds like a day in the life of you, keep reading as ‘JAK’ has just the answer. JAK, or Just Add Kids opened its doors in March 2010 and is owned by sister-in-laws, Kathryn and Rebecca Lloyd. Both women have their own children and have experienced the shopping dilemmas that young mums face every day – so they know that even a supermarket trip for tonight’s dinner can turn into a trolley dash for a lost child who got bored checking if the veg was fresh! Both women left successful careers in marketing and law, deciding they needed a challenge and the thought of providing

toilets. What more could a mother want? However on top of all this Just Add Kids also understands that you don’t always want to spend a small fortune on clothes for your child (who will inevitably grow out of them at an alarming rate!) So the women source high quality, deisgner-style clothing at high street prices from brands such as Joules, Minymo, Kite Kids, Toby Tiger, No Added Sugar and Mayoral. Although they do stock some designer wear from leading brands such as Little Darlings, Sarah Louise, Jean Bourget and Berlingot, for when your child needs that something a little special. And as if all that wasn’t enough Kathryn and Rebecca also run the online store, at www.justaddkidsclothing.co.uk stocking all of the brands available in the shop. So if it’s one of those days where you can’t face putting the children in the car, just curl up on the sofa with the laptop and let the kids help you use the child friendly website to shop for whatever their heart desires. Perfect! www.justaddkidsclothing.co.uk

his multi-million pound hotel development in the centre of Liverpool’s historic RopeWalks district welcomed its first guests last August and it’s been going from strength to strength ever since. The hotel arrived in the city following the success of its flagship venture in London’s Kensington. One of its unique selling points is rather than having a bar or dining facilities on site, each airconditioned room is equipped with a minikitchen, and the hotel encourages guests to explore their surroundings by offering exclusive discounts at restaurants, bars

and cultural venues across the city. The hotel is one of many recently opened businesses in the city to capitalise on Liverpool’s rapidly growing international reputation as a short-stay destination for people wanting to sample its world class museums and galleries and its famous night-life. Gary Laird, general manager of base2stay Liverpool, said: “Liverpool has gone through a renaissance recently and is now a more exciting and appealing tourism destination, so we were keen to be a part of that. We have a completely unique concept that sets us apart from what is currently on offer in the city.

THE HOT 100

1 REBECCA

FERGUSON

Arguably the best singer to come out of Liverpool in 2010, we predict great things for Rebecca Ferguson in 2011. She’s already rumoured to be looking for a larger house in Allerton and (not that we’re ones to jump to conclusions) this could suggest that a record deal is on its way…

KIRSTY

DOYLE 5

2

ALEX FLETCHER

STEPHEN GRAHAM

Liverpool actor Stephen Graham is probably best known for his roles as Tommy in Snatch and ‘Combo’ in This Is England. However, this year sees his debut as Johnny Depp’s sidekick in multi-million pound blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (due out in May). So it’s no surprise that we think this year is going to be a big one for Stephen.

4

3

BENNA HARRY Jewellery designer Benna’s magpie eye has been on our radar for a while now and with recognition from some of the top national press we think that things are going to get a lot busier for this lady in 2011.

Known locally as the nicest woman in showbiz, former Brookside actress Alex Fletcher has been causing quite a stir in her role as Diane O’Conner on popular teen soap Hollyoaks, as well as appearing on Celebrity Master Chef and Daybreak, proving that nice girls don’t finish last!

7

PHILIP ARMSTRONG

& TONY BURKE

With the launch of her fantastic new website and with each collection getting better and better we’d say that Kirsty Doyle is putting her name firmly on the map as a seriously scorching designer.

6

MATT FORD Photographer Matt Ford (the man behind our cover shot and menswear fashion photography in this issue) is already rated highly in the city and visuals from his recent exhibition suggest that things are only going to get better for him in 2011. Watch this space…

Philip Armstrong & Tony Burke are the brains behind cuttingedge fashion label Philip Armstrong Couture, and with followers including Tess Daly, Geri Halliwell and Dannii Minogue, surely global domination beckons for this talented duo.

8

JAKE MILLS

Jake (who was a finalist in 2010’s Comedian of the Year Award) has already forged a name for himself as the comedian’s comedian. Our advice: catch this 21-year-old Liverpool lad at local venues like the Royal Court.

PEOPLE to WATCH

With so many talented singers, actors, designers and photographers from the city poised to break through internationally this year it was virtually impossible to shortlist just eight. However, following much deliberation, here (in no particular order) are the Liverpudlians we’ll be watching with interest this year... 18

CORRIE! AT THE EMPIRE

CREAMFIELDS

It’s that time of year again; we’re already dreaming of summer... Sun, cider and most definitely festivals! And for August 2011 we would whole-heartedly suggest Creamfields - if you haven’t already secured your tickets be quick because they sell out fast.

creamfields.com

Now that nearly all of them are single we’re even more excited about JLS’s extra tour date in January! That’s right, the boys are coming to Liverpool again for a one-off addition to their Arena tour on January 29th. We’re just a little bit excited at the prospect of seeing Aston do one of his wonderful backflips!

Canadian singer Justin Bieber will be stopping by on 11th March to perform at our very own Echo Arena, so if like us you’ve got ‘Bieber Fever’ this date is definitely one for the diary. We look forward to seeing you there...

Last year we raised £15,000 for Help For Heroes at our rather glamorous black-tie ball at The Hilton (see coverage of the event on p34). This year we hope to raise even more with the help of Liverpool’s generous celebrities & business leaders. See the February issue of His & Hers for details of how to book your tickets.

A free festival with everyone’s favourite tribute acts – what more could we want? The Matthew Street Festival never disappoints and this August we’re very much looking forward to heading to the streets of Liverpool to watch acts from all over the country perform across five outdoor stages. mathewstreetfestival.org

22 LIVERPOOL

If you love nothing more than to settle down with a cup of tea and watch Corrie on the sofa we’ve got one better for you. From 21st February ‘Corrie!’ will be hitting the stage at the Liverpool Empire with all your favourite characters including Bet Lynch, Ken Barlow and Jack Duckworth. This is definitely one not to be missed in 2011.

RIHANNA COMES TO LIVERPOOL

November sees the launch of the third annual Liverpool Design Festival. If you love all things design-related, this event, which has grown and improved year on year, is definitely one for you. We’ll be there hoping to spot Liverpool’s designers of the future. liverpooldesign festival.com

What is it about this girl? We all want to be her, the boys want to be with her, there is just nothing this girl can’t do. And we know it is still months away but on October 7th Rihanna at the Echo Arena is clearly going to be a night to remember.

HIS&HERS EATING

LIVERPOOL’S

Georgian Gem As 60 Hope Street unveils its ‘January Sale Menu’, we sent reviewer Emma Griffiths off in search of a bargain.

A Wine Lover’s Dream

Emma Griffiths spent an evening at the Malmaison sampling a menu cleverly devised with wine lovers in mind.

H

ere at His & Hers we’ve long been fans of the Malmaison’s understated elegance, something which extends to all aspects of the hotel, restaurant and bar, and the Vino Voyage evening has us singing their praises yet again. We were invited to attend one of the Malmaison’s wine tasting dinners in their private dining room to showcase the wines and proseccos on offer from one of Italy’s finest estates. Greeted with divine prosecco Bellinis and melon and parma ham canapés upon arrival, we were off to an excellent start. After our charming welcome we were directed to our seats in the private dining room. Settling in, we took the opportunity to peruse the delectable five-course menu in front of us and each of the five proseccos or wines to match, and yes, I suppose you could say we were in food and wine lovers’ heaven. Each of the five proseccos and wines were introduced by Bisol Vineyard’s Roberto Cremonese, who clearly knew his stuff and spoke of the Italian way of drinking, where prosecco is something that is enjoyed throughout the day and without any need for

32

an occasion (we liked him a lot). Bisol winery has been around for centuries producing the finest prosecco from the prestigious Cartazze Hill in the Valdobbiadene region of Italy and you can find a selection of their proseccos on the Malmaison’s extensive wine list. With each of the five courses a different prosecco was tasted, beginning with a scrumptious chicken and truffle parfait accompanied with a refreshingly crisp Bisol prosecco all the way through to the moreish cheese platter complemented by a delicate rose prosecco with hints of fresh fruit. The prosecco on offer will have even the most discerning of champagne lovers passing over the Veuve Clicquot in future. However, the highlight of the evening had to be the heartwarming boeuf bourguignon served with a generous dollop of creamy mashed potato. Asever, theMalmaisondeliveredawonderful evening full to the brim with outstanding service, the finest food and wine and an atmosphere so welcoming that you hardly want to leave. In fact, maybe we’re on to something here – and if Chuck Bass can do it, so can we. WEB: WWW.MALMAISON.COM

W

ith a chill in the air and the Christmas holidays but a distant memory I for one believe that the best remedy for our postsummer blues is plenty of hearty food and a good bottle of wine...or two if the mood strikes. I’m certainly not one to shy away from a touch of fine dining, so when the lovely people at 60 Hope Street invited His & Hers to try out their new menu let’s just say it didn’t take long to free up some space in my diary. Always a firm favourite of mine, 60 is nestled among the beautiful Georgian buildings that run up and down Hope Street, where it has stood for over eleven years. With stunning views of Liverpool’s two cathedrals, impeccable service, delicious food and an exceptionally large wine cellar, it’s easy to see why the restaurant has remained so popular over time. It was clear that 60 had pulled out all of the stops as we were shown to our table by their charming staff. The seasonal menu was

exactly what Emma (His & Hers’ Editor) and I needed on that chilly evening and we were spoilt for choice. Perhaps a glass of wine to get us started...or a bottle? Yes please, I mean it’s practically a fruit portion with all of those grapes. Our waiter recommended a heavenly bottle of Italian white wine which complemented our, eventual, menu selections exquisitely and was far too easy to drink on a supposedly sensible Tuesday evening. We were getting rather full by the time the dessert menus were sent over but, being the professional journalists that we are, we managed to find room to assess the menu from start to finish. It would be rude not to. Peach crème brûlée and Autumn berry cheesecake. Needless to say they were absolutely divine and our evening came to an end with one of the best cappuccinos I’ve had in a long time. Now, I wouldn’t want to be cheeky but it would be safe to say that we can’t wait to get back to 60 Hope Street and see what their next seasonal menu has in store for us. WEB: WWW.60HOPESTREET.COM

This impressive total was reached with the help of representatives of Fraser Wealth Management, who made a cheque presentation for £6,730 on the night.
