EDITOR’S WELCOME THE 'SPEXY BEAST' COMES TO TOWN AND SHARES HIS STAND-UP SECRETS WITH HIS & HERS. As this is the Entertainment Issue, it seemed only fitting to feature an interview with born entertainer, Alan Carr, as he limbers up for two nights of stand-up at the Echo Arena.

Alan’s not giving much away about his new ‘Spexy Beast’ show, though he did divulge: “It’s about chatting. I’m into detailing the minutiae of life. I’m never going to do an hour on tugboats!” So bad news for tugboat aficionados, but good news for the rest of us, as the comedian heads to Liverpool on 25th October. In the meantime, you can read more of Alan’s comedy musings in this month’s interview on p8.

Continuing with the theme of entertainment, you’ll find our food and drink recommendations from p24, a handy social diary roundup, courtesy of award-winning networker Geniene Reese, on p30, and must-buy gadgets to make your home that little bit livelier from p44.

JUSTINE MILLS WITH HER GUIDE TO AUTUMN/WINTER’S KEY FASHION TRENDS In the first of her new monthly columns, Justine Mills, founder of Cricket, the store that put Liverpool on the fashion map, helps us get to grips with the new season trends.

Yes, we’ve had a wash-out of a summer, but at least it’s been the perfect weather to start us thinking about autumn/winter’s fashion trends. There’s no better time to start planning for the season ahead before all the best pieces are snapped up.

Here are a few of the key new looks to update your wardrobe: Jewel Colours. You’ll find an array of shades, from turquoise to emerald or fuchsia on the rails, but as with all trends, if the prospect of wearing jewel colours from top to toe takes you out of your comfort zone, simply introduce a pop of colour through your accessories. I know it’s too early to say the c-word, but people are already beginning to think about what to wear for their Christmas parties, and choosing jewel colours is a great way to stand out from the crowd.

Capes. Lanvin and Alice Temperley have designed some beautiful capes, which would be perfect for the party season.

Black Trousers. Classic black trousers are finally making a comeback. We’ve long resisted them in favour of skinny jeans or leggings, but trousers are a great investment piece which will form the foundations of your wardrobe.

Animal Print. It’s worth investing in animal print, as this is a perennial trend to which the designers

will always return to. If you’re worried about looking a bit Bet Lynch, tone this look down by combining it with sophisticated berry shades, greys and browns.

Anything by Phoebe Philo. Celine’s head designer Phoebe Philo can do no wrong at the moment. What she does one season, other designers will imitate the next. Even if it’s out of your price range, it’s well worth coming in to Cricket to look at her collection, featuring amazing basics with a twist, for fashion inspiration.

Modern Luxury. Exotic prints, animal prints and navy all make us think of luxury in times of austerity, so expect to see more of these feel-good luxe looks.

S&M (as seen at Louis Vuitton) This was an edgy look on the catwalks, but it’s filtered down in a more wearable way. Look out for lots of leather and chains on bags in a subtle nod to the S&M trend.

Spots and Dots. This will be another massive trend for the season. Why not incorporate it through your scarf, gloves, tights or nail polish – this is the perfect way to stay on-trend if money’s tight.

Below-the-Knee Skirts. Another key trend for the season and one which is best paired with high heels!

WINNING WOMEN SUCCESSFUL BROADCAST JOURNALIST JESSICA ROBBINS ON HER LIFE IN THE NEWS. A BBC Radio Merseyside broadcast journalist who’s perhaps better known as the ‘woman in the van’ from Tony Snell’s breakfast show, Jessica Robbins is in work covering the early morning news before many people have woken up . I was very intrigued to find out if the 5am alarm’s worth it…

“The early reporter job is the best one,” enthuses Jessica, “I get to meet remarkable people, see the sunrise and do interviews on beautiful beaches.”

While studying broadcast journalism, Jessica secured work experience at BBC Radio Merseyside - four years later, she’s still there and has been able to work on some very exciting jobs, the best being Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. “I was part of the reporting team for events, including the La Machine spider; to be part of that was an honour.”

Jessica doesn’t want to lose the human touch and is often moved by the stories she covers, especially the morning she was out in Croxteth after Rhys Jones was killed. “I had to read tributes out live on air that his friends had left him; it took me three or four goes before I could do it without crying,” she recalls.

She’s interviewed celebs such as Kenny Dalglish, The Saturdays and Westlife, but it’s meeting people with truly amazing stories that is most rewarding. “I’ve found grandparents looking after their grandchildren because the parents were drug addicts, and couples who had fostered hundreds of children” She says getting into journalism was hard, but knows that with enthusiasm and determination, it’s possible. “I love what I do and couldn’t think of doing anything else. WINNING WOMEN THE FOUNDERS OF SO COCO ROUGE ON MAKING IT IN THE MAKE-UP INDUSTRY. If you’ve not heard of it yet, be introduced to So Coco Rouge, a gem in the heart of Liverpool city centre, founded by make-up artists Robyn Turnbull and Sian-Louise Auld.

Sourcing make-up artists for photo shoots, films and VIP events, the ‘Rougettes’ are located within the Hahnemann Building, where they also offer an appointment-only service and cater for all occasions from a Saturday night on the town to weddings.

Close friends for many years, Robyn and Sian studied together at the School of Make -up in Manchester and have since jointly worked on jobs including London Fashion Week for various fashion labels. They say the key to their success is mutual respect and feel that without each other’s support they would never have taken this leap into starting their own company. Next steps for this already successful young company?

They’re looking to help, support and to build a local network of competent, reliable freelancers.

But as well as painting faces, the women are keen supporters of North West Cancer Research Fund, with Sian acting as a local committee member. As it represents an issue close to their hearts, Robyn and Sian were inspired to hold the launch of So Coco Rouge in aid of the charity, which is an independent organisation, providing grants to support fundamental research into the causes of cancer.

BEST FOR CATALONIAN CHARM Bustling with cheerful diners, even on a Monday, Lunya is the kind of place where you could spend hours indulging in great food, drink and conversation whilst watching the world go by.

Featuring both an award-winning restaurant and deli, Lunya offers exquisite Catalonian cooking created with the finest local produce.

With a little advice from Lunya’s charming proprietor, Peter Kinsella, on the extensive menu before us, we started with some enormous olives and sourdough bread served with oils and a maple-infused balsamic vinegar so moreish that I could have sipped it through a straw. BEST FOR AUTHENTIC ITALIAN Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Castle Street, we discovered a taste of the Italian Riviera at The Olive Press.

Descending the staircase into the candlelit bar, we paused for a swift drink on the comfy leather stools before heading over to our table.

Despite its basement level location, The Olive Press is surprisingly light and airy thanks to a few well placed skylights and a romantic smattering of tea lights.

We couldn’t wait to see what the chefs had to offer and nibbled on a bowl of mixed olives with fresh bread and oils as we perused the menu.

We were spoilt for choice and eventually decided to keep it simple with a mozzarella, plum tomato and basil salad and grilled tiger prawns with garlic and parsley to start. Our main courses: pork cutlet saltimbocca with rosemary potatoes and pan-fried sea bream served with braised leeks and a side of butter crushed new potatoes – yum! Both delicious, the pork rich and succulent while the sea bream was light and refreshing. HIGH-HEELED GUIDE TO NETWORKING AWARD-WINNING NETWORKER AND BUSINESSWOMAN GENIENE REESE IS BACK THIS MONTH WITH MORE FROM THE REGION’S SOCIAL SCENE.

My diary's been filled with an eclectic mix of events this month - from glamorous networking evenings to camping!

11th-19th August. Jacques Town House Event. For one week in August, Liverpool’s Rodney Street was a hot spot in the city with one of its Georgian buildings being transformed into the sensational Jacques Townhouse.

The opening night saw VIP guests savouring the masquerade with glamorous hosts, maids and waiters serving up amazing food.

Eastzeast Launch. Before packing for the V Festival, I went along to the launch party of Eastzeast, the new Punjabi restaurant located opposite the Echo Arena, and what a launch it was! The food and drink was flowing and they had ice sculptures, Bollywood dancers, not to mention a whole host of celebrities.

Parcours Launch. On the business front, Parcours (LLP) held their official launch party today. Their goal is to teach people how to better communicate by breaking down the barriers created through lack of cultural awareness.

Liverpool ONE’s Clothes Throw.

Alex Fletcher from Hollyoaks, fashion designer Kirsty Doyle and patients from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital arrived at Liverpool ONE today to donate clothes and officially open the ‘giant bag’ donation station for Alder Hey’s Clothes Throw campaign. Donated outfits will be used to stock the Liverpool ONE Clothes throw pop-up shop in October.

V Festival. I attended this year’s V Festival armed with my fabulous ‘wedge wellies’ (as featured on Dragon’s Den) for a few extra inches and a pop-up tent (which we assembled in seconds, but took down over hours. Noone tells you how hard it is to disassemble popup tents!) My verdict: I’ll be back next year for more great Liverpool bands like Cast, but I won’t be camping!

De-Stressing at Urban Calm.

Medicash hosted a relaxing networking event at Urban Calm in the Metquarter last night. Guests mingled over wine and canapés before sampling a range of free treatments and a VIP appearance from two well-known Saints Rugby League Football Club players was extremely well received.

The Blooming Great Tea Party.

Liverpool baker Laura O’Connor of Laura’s Little Bakery and charity event organiser Pauline Cox hosted their Blooming Great Tea Party, raising almost £6,000 for Marie Curie today.

FASHIONABLY BRITISH AS LONDON FASHION WEEK APPROACHES, MEN'S EDITOR, LUKE TREVASKIS, GIVES US THE LOW-DOWN ON THE CAPITAL’S HIGHS With annual sales of £64.2bn it is not hard to see why we all flock to London. The quality and quantity of shops seem to bestride a modest split in public opinion: to fashionistas, London is an emporium of raw and innovative talent with a hotbed of new concepts, but to others it is merely an over-saturated cesspool of ‘designer’ culture. The truth is, whether we like it or not, we all have a stake in fashion because we all wear its products.

With LFW set for a knock-out line-up next month, it is great to see the city so widely recognised as the flagship for our own apparel industry employing more than 1,650,000 people. LFW has bridged the gap between designers and the highstreet by commissioning projects with retail outlets such as Topshop to launch capsule collections for new generations such as Christopher Kane. Giving birth to designers such as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney, it is definitely a production that is at the heart of our industry and one not to be missed.

With all the hype that surrounds this wonder of the fashion world, it is best to plan your trip in advance.
