Food & drink ISSUE Welcome
to the
Food & Drink Issue, featuring our pick of the best places to eat and drink in the North West. After spending the past month eating and drinking our way
7
around the North West in the name of research, it’s fair to
8
say that morale levels at His & Hers were already pretty healthy. However, the excitement level was ratcheted up a notch or ten with the news that supermodel Helena Christensen was launching a new lingerie line for John Lewis, Liverpool.

Everyone should own a good shirt and this contrast-collar one is the perfect mix of elegant and edgy – perfect for funking up workwear. Shirt, £36. This chic topshop Bag is a snip at just £25.
Scarves are great for layering during unpredictable weather, and a lighter colour option can give an outfit a lift. Scarf, £18.
Hester’s looks
This month I’ve taken a closer look at high street favourite Topshop’s new autumn/winter collection and picked out my key trans-seasonal wardrobe staples.
A tailored playsuit is a good option for day or night, wear with black opaques and brogues for day and team with chunky heels for evening. Playsuit, £50.
A cute jumper is a must-have for every fashionista and this season Topshop have loads to choose from. This rabbit print one is my favourite. Jumper, £46.
Once again, tailoring is massive this season and a slick jacket is every girl’s must-have. This little slouchy number is a great day-tonight piece. Jacket, £85.
Brogues show no signs of disappearing off the trend radar anytime soon and Topshop has a great selection. Snakeskin brogues, £55.

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW
D
o you remember the days when Helena Christensen, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington dominated not just our catwalks, but our high streets, where the ‘supers’ towered over mere mortals on 40-foot billboards? Almost two decades on, singers, actors and overnight celebrities have taken the place of models on our magazine covers and advertising hoardings, but our fascination with Helena and her contemporaries endures. No surprise, then, that the instant rumours began to circulate in fashion circles that Helena had designed a new underwear range for Triumph, which she’d soon be launching on our doorstep in John Lewis, Liverpool, we forgot all other fashion emergencies and made it our mission to find out more. Much gratitude is due to the team at John Lewis for handling the barrage of Helena-related emails and phone calls that ensued, and for securing us perhaps our most exciting fashion-related Q&A to date... & : Why Triumph in
did you decide particular on a
to work with lingerie range?
HELENA: I love lingerie and to work with a company [Triumph] that has such amazing history and wonderful technology and expertise... I couldn’t work with anyone better. Being able to give input and work with really creative people feels special and more personal. That they trust me in giving me this responsibility feels wonderful. Triumph was one of the first clients I worked with in my teens and now to have come full circle is perfect, to collaborate intensely on the line has been really inspiring.
sure the technology is right. & : How did your experience in the fashion industry and running your own business help when you were working on the range? HELENA: I’ve been in the business for 20 years and it’s been a diverse education. One side is modelling but another side is that I’ve worked so closely with photographers, hairdressers and make-up artists. I’ve worked with some incredible people, so I feel like I’ve spent 20 years absorbing creativity and inspiration. It’s given me a great foundation and platform for creating something myself. My favourite from the range is the black corset dress – it’s very sexy, and reminds me of something Marilyn Monroe would wear. It can be worn to give shape or all by itself with a big fluffy cardigan on top.
TRIUMPH WAS ONE OF THE FIRST CLIENTS I WORKED WITH IN MY TEENS AND NOW TO HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE IS PERFECT.
& : How involved were you in the design process? What styles or inspiration were you keen to include? HELENA: I’ve designed three pieces so far and am doing more. I love going through books or magazines and I always tear pages out if I see something I like. I have a lot of ideas in my head and I’m always being inspired subconsciously. I bring my inspiration board with all the colours, tones and details that inspire me with me when I see the designers, and we try to include that while making
& : You’ve mentioned that good lingerie is an important foundation for any outfit. What is your best style advice? HELENA: When I look at fashion photos I get more inspiration from the feel and atmosphere of the image. Rather than looking for a ‘look’ I am inspired by the feeling, the way the clothes hang on the model. My style is a non-style – it’s quirky, mixed-up, and I like it better if things don’t ‘go’ together. You’ve got to be true to yourself and wear exactly what you feel like. Wear whatever you want and don’t worry about what anyone else will think. HELENA’sCoLLECTIoNForTrIUMPHIsAVAILABLEIN-sTorEAT JoHNLEwIs, LIVErPooLTHIsMoNTH. www.JoHNLEwIs.CoM

CHRISTINE CHELLEW
Originally, Christine, a trained dancer, dreamt of performing, but after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis aged 21, was unable to dance professionally. Christine completed an MA in Contemporary Arts and started teaching dance to students including Ray Quinn. Then, with her creativity and keen eye for detail, Christine saw the opportunity to start her own business. Whilst the company today encompasses many facets, Christine’s vision is still simple: “I want to bring all my creative experiences together in one place to create memorable and inspirational events”. So what is her biggest achievement to date? “Professionally, I was part of organising a European initiative. It was a new approach to learning using performing arts, to engage teenagers all over Europe.” But personally, it’s about overcoming her illness, and coping with the challenges. “I’m proud that I’ve been able to use my skills and experience on some exciting projects; I love connecting creative ideas with people.” So after the success of the last one, there’s another ladies’ lunch in the pipeline, and there’s her return to the Formby Hall Wedding Show, too. And with a Christmas extravaganza like no other at a top Liverpool location in the planning, we shall be looking out for Christine as the face behind some of Liverpool’s biggest events to come! TRACEY WANTS TO BUILD A FASHION BRAND WITHIN MEDICINE TRACEY BELL
Determined to get through university and make a success of herself, Tracey Bell drove taxis to fund her studies, before qualifying as a dentist and opening her first surgery in 1994. Now, she’s the face behind the Tracey Bell brand, famous throughout the UK and worldwide. Tracey’s ‘lightbulb moment’ came in 2007. “I was tired and looked old, so I went to a well-known chain of clinics for Botox, but was treated poorly,” she explains. Deciding she could do better herself, Tracey retrained and opened an aesthetic clinic next door to her original dental surgery. The clinic proved so successful that Tracey was able to grow and develop her brand all over the UK, opening a state-of-the-art clinic here in Liverpool, and a ‘Destination Superclinic’ on the Isle of Man. So, in one sentence, what’s the essence of the business? “Reinvention. The ability to produce physical change and emotive beauty,” says Tracey.
It comes as no surprise, then, that the most rewarding part of the job for Tracey is seeing a visible difference in a client: “Increased confidence gives someone such a boost.” Tracey says the secret of the clinics’ success is that they’re unique; “We offer treatments in packages, under one roof. We produce results, and that’s because we’re passionate and we listen.” Clearly well-positioned for the future, Tracey wants to build “a fashion brand within medicine” and continue to push the boundaries of nonsurgical aesthetic medicine and dentistry. “It sounds like a bold statement but I believe that, with my team, I can build a high street brand that people will trust and aspire to buy into.” A bold statement indeed, but we’re confident that Tracey will deliver upon this promise. The countdown’s on for
Liverpool’s Food & Drink Festival It’s no secret that the His & Hers team appreciates a spot of fine dining, so we couldn’t resist giving this issue a culinary theme in honour of the upcoming Liverpool Food & Drink Festival.
W
ith the Food & Drink Festival, which takes place from 3rd-12th September, just a few days away, look out for a host of food-related events and offers throughout the city, including Half Price Night on Monday, 5th, and £15 per head night on Wednesday, 7th. We’re particularly looking forward to appearances by leading chefs Marco Pierre White, John Torode and Simon Rimmer, all of whom will be appearing at the Festival’s launch weekend at Sefton Park on September 3rd and 4th. Marco Pierre White, who recently opened his own steakhouse within Hotel Indigo, Liverpool, commented: “The last time I attended Liverpool Food and Drink Festival, everyone was so welcoming and the food and drink on offer was to an extremely high standard. I liked the fact that some people who may not have the opportunity to go to some of the restaurants on a regular basis, were able to head to Sefton Park and try the food that they serve.
22
“I’m delighted to be attending once again and the great thing about events like this is that they inspire people to cook and to eat well.” Denise Harris, MD of SK Events, who are organisers of the event, said: “It is fantastic that Marco wants to return and he has become a great friend of the festival. He’s currently playing such a big role within the city’s food and drink sector so it seems very fitting that he is involved once again.” Masterchef judge John and Birkenhead-born Simon, star of BBC 2 show ‘Something for the Weekend’, will also take a tour of the festival site, meeting exhibitors and fans. The launch weekend will also include the Market Place – hosting a selection of artisan food producers including Heirloom Tomatoes, Cha Cha Chilli, Liverpool Cheese Company Ltd, and many more. Other highlights will include cooking demonstrations and free samples and giveaways, which are always a particular favourite of the His & Hers team! For details of opening times and offers, visit: www.liverpoolfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk
A FeastFor the Eyes
Great chefs are fond of declaring that we eat with our eyes before our mouths. Don’t believe them? Just stand outside Patisserie Valerie, where passers-by often gaze at the cakes in the window for minutes at a time, to see the phenomenon in action.
T
WORDS: Emma Griffiths
hose of you who’ve already visited Patisserie Valerie at the Metquarter will be familiar with the power its window display exerts. When confronted by row upon row of immaculately displayed cakes, most people crane their neck as if a particularly juicy celebrity has crossed their path, letting their eyes linger for a little longer than is necessary on the visual feast within. And that’s just the reaction from world-weary commuters. When tourists approach, their excitement is palpable. I’ve twice been asked to photograph groups posing outside the café for holiday snaps.
Luckily for the owners of Patisserie Valerie, people don’t just stop and stare – most make it inside, and whenever I’ve passed, the café has been bustling. Predictably, their cakes sell well, but for the purposes of this review my fellow diner and I warmed up to the main event with saintly salads, accompanied by freshly baked pitta bread, houmous and fat, juicy olives. I appreciate some readers may question the wisdom of visiting a café famous for its cake for a salad. However, I’d argue firstly that nothing cleanses the palate in preparation for a cake-fest quite like a Greek salad and secondly that while most of Liverpool has been talking about Patisserie Valerie’s cakes, you might have been missing a trick. Because although you won’t see the café’s main courses glinting jewel-like in the window display, they are, nevertheless, impressive. So impressive, in fact, that they give the cakes a run for their money. Which really is saying something. www.patisserie-valerie.co.uk

A Grande Dame A lady should never tell her age. But this lady, freshly nipped and tucked (a 5th birthday present to herself), has no need to hide the years. Delifonseca’s Stanley Street restaurant and deli has only improved with age.
T
WORDS: Emma Griffiths
he real lady behind this parlour of delicacies is, of course, Candice Fonseca, creator of the delectable and owner of an expanding foodie empire, having recently opened up her second restaurant and deli at Brunswick Dock. Stanley Street’s facelift has delivered a warm, cosy bistro environment with beautiful lighting and an atmosphere that makes you feel right at home as you sink into one of the plush leather booths. With a menu brimming with homemade delicacies and a blackboard filled with the day’s mouth-watering specials, we had some difficult choices to make, but ones with which our friendly waiter was more than happy to help. Our insider advice led us to the Great British Platter to start, a selection of gourmet picnic
24
fayre with buckets of style. My guest went with the Roast Beef Salad next while I opted for the blackboard’s crowning glory, Lobster Thermidor and homemade chips with an extra pot of “really garlicky aioli”. Incredibly flavoured and oh-so moreish, I complemented the dish with a glass of Argentinian white while my guest took his pick from the restaurant’s ample beer offering. Finishing off with two more blackboard treats and a rich cup of coffee, we were sad to leave this home away from home – so sad, in fact, that we made our way back there for lunch the following Saturday and explored the incredibly stocked deli downstairs. This lady is well worth a visit. www.delifonseca.co.uk

WORDS: Emma Griffiths
he pit-stop of choice for every high-flyer coming through these parts, the Hilton’s modern and airy-yet-elegant appeal extends to its restaurant, The Exchange. Fresh, local and expertly crafted is the order of the day at this fine establishment. His & Hers certainly couldn’t resist the temptation of the new summer taster menu and we found ourselves feasting on seven titbits at our handsome table for two one fine Saturday evening. Our table was flooded with morsels of deliciousness; the taster menu is perfect for those who struggle to pick out their favourite amongst a list of scrumptioussounding options. Exquisitely balanced, light and modern, the asparagus and Roquefort cheese wrapped in Parma ham, smoked haddock, cabbage with pancetta and Jersey Royals as well as the chef’s assiette of desserts were the stand-out combinations within the seven delightful dishes, all of which displayed the exceptional talent of Head Chef, Paula O’Neill. Served by expertly trained staff, our evening, if anything, passed by too quickly. The faultless attention to detail and ever-so-speedy service from the keen young things standing by, eagerly waiting to bring over the next course or a cocktail shaken up by the savvy mixologists at Pima, Hilton’s cotton-themed bar, ensured that you never wanted for anything and left us eager to get back there and sample everything else The Exchange has to offer as soon as possible. www.hilton.co.uk/liverpool

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks on the events front, with the award for tastiest canapés going to Host on Hope Street for Fish! networking and the impressive new Hotel Indigo for the Chamber’s speed networking. I do look forward to some al -fresco meetings in their lovely-looking outside area, of which there just aren’t enough in Liverpool’s business district.

Venmore property group has moved offices and hosted a successful launch at the sparkling new venue on Dale Street, where guests were treated to Pimm’s, champagne and Peroni; there was a hilarious comedian and canapés, too. A winning combination, I’d say! As I write this I’m tying together the last-minute loose ends for an event I’m hosting for one of my clients - Franklin’s Deli in St. Paul’s Square. STREET SMART
This month, Men’s Style Editor Luke Trevaskis was back ‘up north’ for the second part of his London V Liverpool Street Smart. WORDS AND PICTURES: LUKE TREVASKIS
DAMMIE, 22
Dance Student When you have an athletic build, there is little that can go wrong with the Topman tee-and-pants look. River Island hi-tops complement this dual-tone look and the jewellery that breaks up Dammie’s arms hails from the island of Zante.
36
TOM, 17
Stylist, Andrew Collinge Doc Martens and Quiggins’ jeans instantly pull this young punk out from the crowd. With his signature hairstyle, the Topman shirt and straw hat lift this look to ensure the Kitsch jacket seals the deal.
KYLE, 20
Accounting Student Kyle successfully pulls off a smarter Converse look. With a sky-blue H&M shirt, his biscuit roll-ups, waistcoat and bag are like a walking Zara advertisement and definitely added a touch of sophistication to Church Street.
SCOTT, 26
Sales Manager Scott definitely sold this well put-together but casual outfit to us. Keeping it simple with Converse, he paired his All Stars with a floral shirt and camel trousers from All Saints. Classic.
TOM, 21
Film Production Student Spotted meandering down Bold Street, Tom teamed his New Look jacket with River Island shorts, the navy theme complemented by the bursts of colour from his Topman T-shirt and bag.
CHRIS, 25
Information Analyst Chris puts his analytical skills to good use when deciding which outfit to wear on a hot summer’s day. Starting with espadrilles (a good summer staple) his Montreal V-neck T–shirt from ASOS and River Island cut-offs would be perfect for an afternoon BBQ.
