Editor’s welcome

HOLLYWOOD issue Welcome

Since launching His & Hers in 2011, it’s been an exhilarating (and occasionally nerve racking) process watching the magazine grow from a simple concept sketched out at my kitchen table over far too many cups of English Breakfast tea to a genuinely grown-up glossy. Many of the changes, such as adding more pages, attracting more readers and welcoming new writers have been part of a gradual process. However, every once in a while, changes seem to arise at a much faster pace, creating opportunities I wouldn’t have dared to dream of. That’s what happened a month or so ago, when Dean Ryan, a friend and creator of Fashion Rock Show, called from the US to lay down the gauntlet; if I promised to jump on a plane in time for the Grammys, he’d roll out the red carpet (literally in this case) by holding a His & Hers issue launch party in Hollywood. It would have been an impossibly tempting offer even if it hadn’t happened to coincide with an LA travel review opportunity and the desire of Tracey Bell (one of His & Hers’ longest standing advertisers) to join forces with the magazine to take her luxury skincare range to the US. Naturally, plane tickets were booked and just a few hours later, His & Hers was being toasted in style at the magazine’s rather glamorous West Hollywood issue launch party. A flurry of Grammys and Oscars-related red-carpet interviews and a celebrity party or two followed, making for my all time favourite ‘working week’. I really hope you’ll enjoy the resulting interviews from LA. Special thanks are due to the Bobbi Brown PR team for their help with the Katie Holmes cover story, to the Topshop team on both sides of the Pond and to the brilliant teams at BA and Visit LA. I’d also like to say a big thank you to Dean and Nic at Fashion Rock Show and to Craig Slo Cowan, Shane Michael Clary and Robert M Knight, who gave me the insiders’ guide to LA and gently pointed me in the direction of the city’s hidden gems and rising talents.

Katie Holmes’s Modern Approach to Beauty Katie Holmes opens up about her understated, modern approach to beauty and explains why you’ll never see her “looking like a clown” on the red carpet.

K

atie Holmes showed a typically relaxed, less-ismore approach to this year’s Oscars celebrations, flying to LA for just a few hours to attend a pre-Oscars party in a simple black one-piece before returning to the East Coast on the same night. While many of her contemporaries courted publicity in show-stopping outfits and statement make-up at this year’s red carpet events, Katie, who was famously pictured at the Vanity Fair Party last year (one of her last public appearances with Tom Cruise) chose to keep her look simple and her time on the red carpet brief this year. Katie explained why she avoids overly complicated fashion and make-up looks for the Oscars, saying: “I still always want to look like me. You have 15 minutes of the red carpet, and then you see everyone you know. And if you look like a clown, it’s kind of weird. So I like very subtle… But I love false eyelashes. If I could put them on myself, I would do it every day.” Of course Katie has something of a head start when it comes to perfecting her party style. Having recently been named as the first celebrity face of one of His & Hers’ favourite beauty brands, Bobbi Brown, Katie now has the world’s best make-up artists on speed dial. The actress commented: “I’m thrilled, and so thankful. She’s just so lovely, and it’s wonderful to work

8

with people who are kind and nice and who you can be inspired by.” Katie added: “I really like Bobbi’s philosophy that make-up makes you feel beautiful. You’re already beautiful, but it makes you feel stronger and better. I think that while you don’t want to walk around depending on your beauty, it’s nice to have products out there that do help you when you haven’t slept enough, or if you’re going in to a big meeting and you’re a little nervous and it might be that tube of lipstick that gives you the extra dose of confidence you need. Women in this day and age handle so much, and I think those little things really matter.” As a working mother, Katie tends to keep her day-to-day skincare regime simple, relying on cleansing and moisturising morning and night and sleeping in a face mask as frequently as possible. Unless she’s on set or dressing for a special occasion, Katie keeps her make-up light, opting for a subtle blusher, eye shadow and a slick of lip gloss. When asked to reveal her beauty secrets, Katie said: “Drink a lot of water. Be careful with the blush.

His&hers interview

9

His&hers INTERVIEW Because sometimes – and I’m saying this really hoping my cheeks aren’t like tomatoes right now – less is more.” Refreshingly, unlike many actresses, Katie is honest about the fact that she is willing to work up a sweat to stay looking and feeling good, explaining: “I work out four times a week, or try to. I ride the bike and run, I lift weights, do yoga. And I really try to eat healthily. You do have the meal of the week that’s like French fries and cupcakes, and I think that’s important. But I try to eat a lot kale, salad with chicken, that kind of stuff. That just helps me keep up with life. And then I think it definitely plays into your skin.” Katie is clearly relishing her role as the face of Bobbi Brown and her subtle and sophisticated style makes her a natural fit for the brand. However, while Katie may have the kind of looks, not to mention the kind of beauty cabinet – courtesy of Bobbi Brown – that many girls would kill for, she’s clearly acutely conscious that living well is about much more than looking good, and this is something that she’s keen to impart to her daughter. “I think getting dressed up and wearing makeup is a lot of fun, and I’ve always enjoyed it”, said Katie, adding: “ In terms of when I became a mother and what I’m imparting to my daughter about beauty, I’m pretty much imparting what my mother and grandmother taught me. What’s most important is what’s going on in your heart and your head. We’ll always have fun with lip gloss and all those things, and she’ll grow up and she’ll wear it like we do, but I try not to have the focus be on looks. It’s definitely more about running really fast, and reading, and that sort of thing.” At a time when women and girls of all ages face an unprecedented degree of pressure regarding the way they look, Katie’s balanced approach to beauty certainly strikes a chord. We don’t know about you, but His & Hers certainly

10

thinks that Katie Holmes looks, and sounds like, an everyday beauty icon for our age. The products used to create Katie Holmes’s daytime and night-time looks are available from Bobbi Brown counters nationwide: www. bobbibrown.co.uk

behind the scenes London Fashion Week highlights

Fashion writer Hannah Ramsay has been burning the midnight oil covering the shows at London Fashion Week. Here are a few of her behind-the-scenes highlights.

B

obbi Brown took a hands-on approach at L’Wren Scott’s autumn/winter 2013 show, adding a dash of gold to models’ eyes to complement the gilt edged fashion. Bobbi said: “L’Wren Scott’s autumn/winter 2013 collection is infused with gold, drawing inspiration from the work of Gustav Klimt. For the makeup, there is a painterly wash of gold on the eyes, creating a new alternative to the smoky eye - the gilded eye - framed by a defined brow. Glowing skin is complemented with naturally flushed cheeks and lips to balance the modern opulent look.” Sadly, the His & Hers team couldn’t snap up all of L’Wren Scott’s key pieces fresh from the catwalk (sigh), but we could get an instant fashion fix by snapping up one of Bobbi Brown’s 24 Karat long-wear shadow sticks (as used on the models to create that seductive

16

shimmer). At just £20, we defy you to find a more affordable LFW-related fashion or beauty fix! Another of our favourite LFW runway make up looks, featuring striking crimson lips, was created by Revlon’s Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, for Antonio Berardi’s runway show. “I created a luminous base on the skin using the new Revlon Skinlights in ‘Pink Light’ with my Baby Stick in ‘Pink Passion’ to create a flawless porcelain effect on the girls. The focus of the look was the bright crimson lip with the rest of the features being very simplistic”, said Gucci. Revlon UK nail ambassador Jenny Longworth said: “To reflect the Berardi girl, I created super polished slightly wet looking nails in a crimson red shade. To create the slightly wet look I used Revlon’s quick dry top coat which created a perfectly finished shine to the nail.”

His&hers BEAUTY

The Future Face of Beauty His & Hers made an appointment with one of the UK’s foremost anti-ageing experts, Mr Alex Karidis, to find out which treatments the A-listers really rely on to turn back the clock.

W

hen His & Hers arrived for our interview with Mr Karidis, one of the UK’s most well known and respected cosmetic surgeons, we were slightly nervous about facing the scrutiny of the man the beautiful people have on speed dial. Would his professional eye be drawn to every imperfection, and were we a little under-dressed for his impeccably designed treatment rooms at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar? Fortunately, it soon transpired that Mr Karidis has the kind of relaxed and friendly demeanour that helps dispel any nervousness. He began by explaining how the recently opened Karidis Medispa, which offers a range of non-surgical anti-ageing and rejuvenating treatments, complements his famous London practice. Just a few months after opening the Medispa, Karidis’s high-performance HydraFacial has already attracted a waiting list and a celebrity following. Mr Karidis explained: “It’s one of our most popular treatments for instant results. It’s a great red carpet treatment because you don’t have to worry about recovery time.” Mr Karidis said he was pleased to see celebrities opting for a more natural look on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars and Grammys, adding: “I’ve been championing a more natural look for the past 15 years – everyone’s going to develop that one little wrinkle – if you attempt to get rid of every line, that’s when people start to look unnatural.” Mr Karidis said stars like Angelina Jolie and

18

Charlize Theron are among his icons of modern beauty, looking glamorous yet natural on the red carpet. When asked for his best beauty advice, Alex paused and broke into a smile before saying: “Whether you’re looking for a surgeon, or considering something like Botox, do your research, and don’t forget the importance of great skincare and facials – they’ve come a long way in the last five years. But most importantly, smile! It makes the biggest difference of all.” www.karidis.co.uk/medispa

His&hers interview

Beatrice Rosen, the Reluctant A-Lister Beatrice Rosen may have starred in several Hollywood blockbusters and a series of high-profile TV series, but the actress has done her best to side-step the fame that generally accompanies such success. 19

His&hers interview

U

ntil last month when we met Beatrice Rosen for an informal interview in a quiet corner of the Sunset Marquis’ restaurant in West Hollywood, His & Hers knew relatively little about the actress. Yes, we’d seen Beatrice starring alongside Christian Bale in the Dark Knight, and cropping up in several long-running TV series such as Smallville, not to mention turning heads when she appeared (always impeccably dressed) on the red carpet. However, as we knew next to nothing about Beatrice off camera, we were more than a little intrigued to meet her. The actress was easy to spot as she sat looking rather beautiful bathed in dappled sunshine in the Sunset Marquis’ patio restaurant. The cosy yet chic venue is a rare beast in Hollywood, a place where the friendly staff and customers genuinely pay less attention to the celebrity guests’ last film or music project than they do to exactly how they’d like their drink fixing (something which, unlike the fame game, is taken rather seriously here!) The relaxed environment created the perfect ambiance for a laid back interview with Beatrice, who was born in the US, but grew up in France. The actress was soon talking animatedly about the subtle cultural differences between the US, France and the UK, where she has been working on a pilot starring opposite Roger Moore. Beatrice laughingly confessed that she loved working and socialising in the UK, but felt that everyone was so polite that it was sometimes difficult to get to the heart of exactly what was being said. She chuckled as she explained: “When you’re in France or America, everyone’s very direct and to the point, but in the UK, everyone’s so polite about everything!”

I’m so quiet about my work that when I did the Dark Knight none of my friends knew about it!

20

The actress clearly loves travelling, saying: “I no longer feel like I’m purely French or American – I have this international view and it’s great to feel free and excited about what’s coming up next.” She added: “I have lots of friends in the UK, so it’s somewhere I like to go whenever I’m in Europe.” Beatrice has starred in an impressive number of high-profile films and TV series in the US, UK and France, making it somewhat baffling that if you go in search of press cuttings, or references to the actress online, you’ll find that remarkably little has been written about her. When asked how she’d somehow managed to elude the media spotlight while snapping up a series of high-profile roles, Beatrice explained: “In France, the tendency is to play down and minimise what you do, so it’s taken me a long time to learn how publicity can serve you. I’m so quiet about my work that when I did the Dark Knight, none of my friends knew about it, so I was getting all these texts saying ‘is that you?’ Then when 2012 (the high-profile end-of-the-world thriller in which Beatrice stars) came out, I finally started thinking it might be time to get a publicist. However, I’m building this career for the long-run and I’m much more concerned about working on interesting projects than courting publicity.” At a time when our obsession with celebrity culture is at an all-time high, it’s refreshing to meet an actress who has had the confidence to go against the grain, deftly sidestepping the trappings of fame in favour of travelling the world doing a job that she loves. Beatrice talks a lot about freedom, and we sense that this is something she’s found quietly and without fanfare. Perhaps that search for a publicist can wait! STREET SMART

The Street Smart team sought shelter from spring’s snow storms in London’s Westfield shopping centre, where they found plenty of stylish shoppers who’d had the same idea. WORDS: Hannah Ramsay, PICTURES: Alexandra Burnside Hughes

Sara, 22

Accountant Sara wasn’t keen on her look, but I thought her simple all-black ensemble was very chic indeed. Over skinny black Topshop pants, she wore a sixties inspired coat from Zara, and finished with a bag, also from Zara, and KG shoes.

22

Zoe, 21

Student Zoe kept the chill out in her on-trend khaki parka from ASOS, which she wore over jeans and a jumper, both from Gap. She added suede ankle boots, again from ASOS, and a stunning Mulberry tote.

Grace, 22

Student Nurse I loved Grace’s blue-toned layering of Vero Moda jeans and Zara top, over which she wore a scalloped jacket from Topshop. Eco boots and a bag also from Zara completed the look.

Paulina, 19

Student Paulina channelled the ‘off-duty model’ look, teaming Topshop leggings with a tee from Boy London and an oversized, fur-trimmed parka. She accessorised with a bag bought in her native Germany.

Charlotte, 29

Sales Consultant I caught sight of Charlotte’s metallic Zara shoes from miles away! Instead of going completely space-age, she toned down her statement footwear with jeans from Topshop, a Gap coat and vintage top, bag and belt.

Emma, 23

Actress Emma looked cool and relaxed in her Day Birger et Mikkelsen trench, which she paired with a top also from the brand and American Apparel leggings. She toughened the look up with studded boots from Kurt Geiger and a vintage bag.

His&hers lifestyle

Jo Malone London’s Scent of Summer The His & Hers team has a long-standing obsession with Jo Malone London, so being amongst the first to be given a sneak preview of Osmanthus Blossom was a dream assignment.

O

smanthus Blossom is the first fragrance Marie Salamagne, a fast rising star of the world of perfumery, has created for Jo Malone London and her excitement about the collaboration is clear: “Jo Malone London is extremely elegant yet simple,

and with an unexpected twist. It is a brand that pays attention to the quality of the ingredients, allowing perfumers to experiment and create”, said Marie. She added: “When Jo Malone London suggested that we create this fragrance (Osmanthus Blossom), I immediately thought back to my experience of working with the blossom while studying perfumery, which compelled me to treat the flower in a fresh way. So I drew inspiration from the idea of delicate blossom petals covered in bright morning dew.” Osmanthus Blossom will be available from Jo Malone stores and counters nationwide this summer ‘ its fresh, modern and distinctive scent makes it His & Hers’ favourite fragrance launch of 2013 and we suspect that it will join the brand’s signature fragrances like Lime Basil & Mandarin as a contemporary classic. The fragrance is priced at £38 for 30ml or £76 for 100ml. Visit: www.jomalone.co.uk for details of your nearest stockists and online store.

His & Hers celebrates

World Oceans Day

This June, we’ll be celebrating World Oceans Day in style with one of our favourite skincare brands.

C

rème de la Mer is marking World Oceans Day 2013 by supporting ocean conservation efforts in the UK through BLUE Marine Foundation, and worldwide through Oceana. Crème de la Mer’s World Oceans Day 2013 campaign seeks to raise awareness not only of the beauty and restorative power of the sea, but also its fragility. “The ocean is an integral part of Crème de la Mer’s brand heritage, and we are always looking to expand our support of programmes that improve the health of our oceans”, said Crème de la Mer General Manager UK & Ireland, Taj Giles. Topping His & Hers’ summer wish-list, the 100ml jar of Crème de la Mer, with a new limited edition modern design that commemorates the importance of World Oceans Day, will be available from 1st June. Readers who rely on this cult beauty buy to smooth away fine lines can snap up this limited edition version while doing their bit for the environment (* Crème de la Mer has donated more than $1 million to Oceana in support of World Oceans Day to date). Created in 1992 and made official by the United Nations in 2009, World Oceans Day takes place annually on 8th June. It serves as a time to recognise the importance of the sea as a vital ecosystem and to take action to preserve its delicate habitats and wildlife. Crème de la Mer’s founder, Dr. Max Huber, recognised the value of the living ocean when he pioneered the use of sea kelp in the cream that renewed and restored the look of his skin. Today, in a tribute to his legacy, Crème de la Mer continues to help preserve the natural habitat of this special sea plant by using only sea kelp that has been sustainably hand harvested.

Insider Tip

If you’re stuck for a look for a night out or you just don’t want your usual blow dry, a quick twist on a classic pony will tick the box for any occasion. Start by backcombing all of your hair, keeping the backcombing as close to the root as possible. At this point you should be looking like Russell Brand circa 2011. Now use a soft bristle brush and start to mould the hair into shape, with your band in the opposite hand secure the hair. Try and be definite about positioning and remember to always keep your pony as high as your heels. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Andrew Collinge salons, or ping me a tweet: @jaynemahon

I

t’s the time of year when we start to think of a new look and a new you. Whether it’s a wardrobe overhaul, make up, or a new hairstyle you crave, hopefully these tips will help as you head to the salon to dust off a new you. Let’s start with colour; ditch the dip dye, which is best left in 2012. Instead, ask your stylist to use a smudging technique - this will help to blend the colours together to create a softer more on-trend wearable look. If you have an ‘all over’ colour application and you need to cover up any of those troublesome greys, start to think about softening the hair line slightly. This can be flattering and help to give the hair a more natural look, also helping to blend and soften regrowth. You can achieve this by asking your stylist to place some ‘packets’ of your chosen colour around the hairline. Trust me on this one, it will make a huge difference. The best general tip for 2013 regarding colour is - if you’re light, go lighter, if you’re copper, be copper, if you’re brown, go richer, and if you’re dark, you guessed it, go darker!

Must-Haves

w Collinge Art Director Jayne Mahon share their summer wish lists.

Matt’s must-haves for him Fuji X-20

With its retro looks and speed demon tech - this looks like those old rangefinders you see on posh perfume adverts, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s style over content - it ain’t. Under the hood is a lightning quick auto focus, advanced electronic viewfinder and a tasty 2.0 lens. I found it a little frustrating that there was no tactile manual focus (it’s on screen only), and I saw the aperture shift in video recording (but my unit was preproduction so they may fix that), but as a camera, it feels great, the shots look good, full of colour and you look cool while using it - always a bonus.

Matt Littler

Sony RX-100

This guy packs a frankly massive one-inch sensor (read: nicer pictures and a more film-like end result). The Rx-100 is probably the best point and shoot camera out there today – with a very fast 1.8 Zeiss lens and with a video recording spread that’s changing the way some pros shoot films, it’s hard not to be seduced by it. It does lacks the reassuring, safe-in-the-hand form factor of the X-20, but at 20+ megapixels, and 1080p 60fps video, for me, this is the little camera that can.

Samsung Galaxy S4

Early in March, Samsung announced its next ‘iPhone Killer’ and it looked like this one might just have enough grunt to do it. That was until the news reached the UK that the promised 1.6 GHz Octa-core processor - much hyped during the launch - wouldn’t make it into the UK handsets. But what does this mean? Well, reduced battery life and perhaps even reduced handset speed, the replacement is a 1.9 GHz Quad-core which is still twice as fast as the iPhone 5, but who knows how Cupertino will fight back? And with both companies working on ‘Smartwatches’, and google about to release Google Glass, this tech death-match is about to get interesting. Why not find me on Twitter: @MattLittler? See you next month!

Maureen Hooson Shares the Secret Behind Her Success After launching her jewellery business with an initial investment of just £250, Maureen Hooson has created the hugely successful retail brand Mococo, which has just been named ‘Business of the Year’. His & Hers found out how.

W

hen His & Hers met with Maureen Hooson, she was visiting her Metquarter store (one of six Mococo high-street shops). Maureen seemed perfectly at home surrounded by her efficient staff and customers browsing for something special. However, over a coffee, she explained that her life in jewellery retail hasn’t always been so glamorous. Maureen, who won the prestigious Network She Award for Business of the Year last month, explained that her company was founded on a shoestring budget. While working in retail by day, Maureen invested in £250 worth of jewellery, and began holding jewellery parties for family and friends. Maureen said: People seemed to love the parties and there was such a buzz – soon I was holding them several nights a week and by the time I opened my first store (in Ruthin) the whole house was full of jewellery!” Working alongside her husband, Lee, Maureen has opened an average of one new store every year since the company was founded in 2006. Today Mococo employs 46 people. Working with brands like Pandora, Thomas Sabo, Tresor Paris, Bacarat and many others, Maureen has created her dream career and company. When asked if she had any advice for His & Hers readers who yearn to launch their own businesses, Maureen said her best advice would be not to fall

28

into the trap of believing you have to have a big budget to get started and to allow your business to grow organically, rather than relying on outside investment, if possible. His & Hers left an energetic and cheerful Maureen planning the next step for Mococo which is adding some much needed sparkle to our high streets one store at a time. www.mococo.co.uk

Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News March ended on a high when the brilliant Olly Murs dazzled a Liverpool audience at Echo Arena, the screams of appreciation almost lifting the roof off. Olly heads out to perform with Robbie Williams later this year on his ‘Take the Crown’ stadium tour, but he proved here in Liverpool that he’s hot on Robbie’s heels for the King of Pop title.

O

K, admit it, who’s hooked on ITV’s ‘The Big Reunion’? I’ve loved seeing all of the bands from yesteryear taking us on a trip down memory lane. The bands recently performed a comeback show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo which saw emotional Atomic Kittens Natasha & Kerry wiping away the tears as the occasion got a little too much. Meanwhile the Liberty X girls looked smokin’ hot, easily fitting into their black skintight PVC catsuits which they first wore over 10 years ago. The 911 boys didn’t disappoint either with flips and other acrobatics mixed into their performance. 5ive, Liberty X, 911, Atomic Kitten, Honeyz and B*Witched are hitting the road on tour in May, and if the London show is anything to go by it’s going to be amazing. For the rockers amongst us, Canadian stars Nickelback have announced that ‘The Hits’ tour is coming to UK in the autumn, with massive hits including ‘How You Remind Me’, ‘Photograph’, ‘Burn it to the Ground’ and ‘Rockstar’ joining recent tracks ‘When We Stand Together’, ‘Bottoms Up’ and ‘Lullaby’ – this tour has all the ingredients for a sell-out show not to be missed. Meanwhile, lovers of the musical Rent are in for

a treat in April when ‘Rent – The 20th Anniversary Concert’ pays Liverpool a visit with West End star Kerry Ellis & Superstar runner-up Rory Taylor headlining the cast. I can’t wait for that one! April Top Tip – Rent – The 20th Anniversary Concert – 27 April www.echoarena.com

STREET SMART The Street Smart team spotted these stylish, yet understated, shoppers at London’s Westfield shopping centre. WORDS: Hannah Ramsay, pictures: Alexandra Burnside-Hughes

Noriel, 23

Chef Noriel clearly likes a change from his chef whites in his spare time, judging by his colourful ensemble. He dutifully informed me that his entire look also just happened to be head to toe from Levi’s!

Ant, 21

Student Ant went for a smart / casual look for his shopping trip, wearing jeans and a shirt both from APC, with a Ralph Lauren jumper. The causal element came from a Uniqlo parker and Nike trainers.

Brad, 19

Dancer I loved Brad’s quirky candy-coloured outfit! Over rolled up Zara jeans, he wore a pink shirt from Jack Wills and a gilet also from the British brand. He accessorised with a pair of Nike trainers.

Dejan, 21

Fashion PR Student Dejan looked great in his classic outfit of Zara chinos, and trench coat also from the store. He added a pop of colour in the form of a hot pink Jack Wills jumper, and Nike trainers gave the look a casual edge.

Saheed, 27

Dancer Saheed looked the epitome of edgy cool in his Zara leather jacket, worn over a shirt and jumper, both from H&M. He also wore Topman jeans and finished the look with distressed Zara biker boots.

David, 23

Hairdresser David looked effortlessly stylish in his quirky Topshop trench, which he teamed with jeans also from Topshop. Underneath he wore a top picked up in Thailand, and added some beige suede shoes from Dr Martens.

Sir Philip Green’s celebrity Topshop & Topman launch in LA

A

t his high-profile LA store launch, a relaxed and genial Sir Philip Green said to His & Hers: “It’s all very exciting!” Then gesturing around the store, he chuckled and asked: “So what do you think? Nothing here to hate, hey?” Taking in the slick interiors and perfectly on-trend fashion on display, we certainly couldn’t see anything to hate. Split across two floors, the 30,000 sq ft space gives the UK’s flagship Liverpool and London stores a run for their money and we couldn’t resist becoming caught up in the enthusiasm and excitement emanating from Sir Philip Green and his staff. Back in the UK, the Topshop team were clearly counting down the days to the big LA launch. When helping me decide what to wear for the big event, Charlotte Harper, the rather brilliant personal shopping advisor at Topshop’s Liverpool

40

store, (get this lady on speed dial if you can) declared that she couldn’t wait to see how Topshop’s latest looks would go down with LA’s fashion loving stars and shoppers. Armed with Charlotte’s choice of a chic blue ‘50s style dress (Topshop, of course!) it was a pleasure to be present to witness a little fashion history in the making as Sir Philip Green pulled out all the stops in LA. Following a final tour of his store, His & Hers left Sir Philip Green to greet his celebrity guests who’d turned out in force for the pre-launch party at Cecconi’s, West Hollywood. Stars included Kate Bosworth, Ryan Seacrest, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez, Liberty Ross, Kim Kardashian, Kelly Osbourne, Will.i.am and Lionel Richie. Now that’s what we call a launch party!

His&hers interview

An Undeniable Talent Every once in a while a musician comes along who makes even the most jaded of industry insiders misty eyed. Michael Lemmo is one such musician.

W

photographer: Shane Michael Clary

hen His & Hers arrived in LA, we were told that if we had time to see just one new talent during our stay, we should make it Michael Lemmo. Championed by the likes of Van Halen, Billy Bob Thornton and legendary rock photographer, Robert M Knight, to name but a few, Michael has no shortage of supporters. We first spotted the musician deep in conversation with rock legends from both sides of the Pond during a private party at Sunset Marquis and were struck by his polite, slightly reserved demeanour and the way that whenever Michael leaves a room, you will almost inevitably see people rushing to check out his songs on their iPhones. The fact that Michael appears to be unaware of the impact that his music has is undoubtedly part of the appeal. During our time in LA, His & Hers was lucky enough to meet with Robert M Knight, arguably one of the most successful rock photographers of alltime. Having photographed the greats for the past four decades, it would be fair to say that Robert does not impress easily. He explained that he’s reached a point in his career at which he’s no longer interested in discovering good, or even great musicians (feeling that there are simply too many of them out there). Robert is only interested in “the undeniable” – talent so raw that you simply can’t ignore it. Michael Lemmo is one of a very small number of artists to have made it onto Robert’s radar. (To see a few others, visit: www.brotherhoodoftheguitar.com). During our interview at the SLS in Beverly Hills, Michael Lemmo says that one of his first big breaks came after seeing Rock Prophecies (the multi awardwinning film about Robert M Knight). After watching the film, he emailed Robert, who agreed to meet with him and has been championing Michael ever since. A chance meeting with Eddie Van Halen who

lived down the street from Michael and declared “that kid can play!” also helped to bolster Michael’s confidence at an early age. As the musician spoke quietly and modestly about the series of chance meetings that have helped to keep his dream of making it in the music business alive, he explained that moving to Hollywood had been a big catalyst for his success, adding: “It all feels like it was just meant to be – there’s stuff that could only happen here, but you’ve got to show up to make it happen.” Michael says another key development was beginning to play and write with Ciaran Wall, a talented singer and songwriter who also happens to be a close friend. He explained: “It’s a great relationship because we’re always pushing each other to write – there’s a healthy competitiveness and also we seem to complement each other. I’m the perfectionist, the Jeff Buckley fan who’s always obsessing about songwriting, whereas Ciaran really knows how to have fun.” He added: “Finding someone that you can work with feels a bit like winning the lottery – it’s about team work and friendship.” Having attracted so much attention in the US, Michael and Ciaran are keen to continue performing and recording in West Hollywood. However, they say that one of their biggest dreams is to travel to Liverpool, adding: “Since we look up to the Beatles so much and they’ve been such a big influence for us, it would be amazing to get the chance to perform in their home town.” While we’re waiting for Michael and Ciaran to perform in Liverpool, we’ll be posting some exclusive His & Hers video footage of the musicians, courtesy of photographer & videographer Shane Michael Clary, on the website soon, and will keep you posted regarding Liverpool dates. We promise these musicians are worth clearing your diaries for! www.hisandhersmag.co.uk

An emotional Judy Finnigan expressed her delight at returning to the Albert Dock, where she famously co-hosted This Morning with her husband, Richard, for The House Beauty Spa’s book club, saying: “As we approached the Albert Dock, my stomach went into knots. We spent such an important period of our lives, personally and professionally, here and seeing these beautiful views brought it all back.” Judy had returned to the Albert Dock to discuss her best-selling novel, Eloise, at a special talk and book signing. Margaret Harry, owner of the The House Beauty Spa, said: “We couldn’t be more proud to welcome Judy Finnigan back to Liverpool for our latest book signing event. Judy really is a national treasure, and has done wonders in championing reading with the Richard & Judy Book Club. Our own book club has gathered real momentum and has become hugely popular with our clients, so to be able to bring authors of Judy’s quality and talent to Liverpool is very exciting.”

His & Hers’

LA Highlights His & Hers explored Los Angeles with a little help from the experts at British Airways and the LA Tourism Board.

W

hen His & Hers received the invitation of a lifetime, involving exclusive access to several Grammys and Oscars parties, not to mention our very own issue launch party in Hollywood, our first (and only) question was how to get to LA, and fast! Fortunately a jet-setting friend had the answer. The well travelled journalist, who had recently returned from a press trip to LA, flying with BA, recommended the airline’s Club World (long-haul business) flights in the strongest possible terms as the most relaxed and comfortable option for transatlantic travel. On arrival at Heathrow Airport, Club World passengers are ushered into the chic Galleries Lounge. Here you’ll find the usual complimentary food and beverages, but also spacious spa-style showers, an unexpected and welcome luxury. Once His & Hers had been pried away from the Galleries Lounge’s brilliant business centre

46

(a lifesaver for business passengers who rely on constant access to their 21st century essentials), we were swiftly welcomed onto our flight. Seats in the Club World cabin are generously proportioned and comfortable, transforming into cleverly designed flat beds at the flick of a switch, a very desirable feature for those wishing to sleep during the flight (which takes approximately nine hours). His & Hers opted for a saintly salad from the Club World menu, which features first-rate locally sourced ingredients. Staff were friendly and attentive, but somehow seemed to sense when passengers’ priorities had shifted from eating and drinking to sleeping, disappearing discreetly only to reappear the moment they were needed. Perhaps that’s part of the BA training, or perhaps it’s a natural skill – either way, His & Hers was impressed. Following a comfortable flight which passed faster than expected, His & Hers arrived in LA bright eyed and ready to explore! www.britishairways.com

Luxe City Center

If you’re visiting LA for the Grammys, there’s really only one place to stay and that’s at the Luxe City Center.

H

is & Hers landed in LA during the build-up to this year’s Grammys, at a time when you have to crane your neck to spot someone who isn’t a music star, and the awards are the hottest topic (if not the only topic) in the city. Therefore we were more than a little excited to discover that the brilliant team at the LA Tourism Board had booked us into the Luxe City Center, which just so happens to face the Grammy Museum. We would have been smitten with this stylish yet relaxed and unpretentious hotel at any time of year. The staff are incredibly helpful, the room service

menu is delicious and yet very reasonably priced, so you won’t feel guilty about any midnight feasting, and the decor is understated but elegant. However, we must admit that arriving at the same time as many of the stars of this year’s Grammys added a certain frisson of excitement to our stay. His & Hers enjoyed a blissful night’s sleep in the hotel’s Platinum Suite, which we really can’t recommend highly enough – from the views of the Hollywood Hills to the amazing shower to the bed you won’t want to leave this really is a suite that’s been designed to spoil you in every way possible. Drifting down to breakfast on the day of the Grammys, we couldn’t help but

47

His&hers TRAVEL

notice that several of our fellow guests were already wearing glamorous evening gowns for the awards and a few early birds could be seen striking a pose on the red carpet outside the Grammy Museum, where the flash bulbs were already popping. From our table by the window, His & Hers overheard snippets of conversation from nervous nominees and indulged in some thoroughly enjoyable people watching while writing up quotes from the previous night’s pre-Grammys party, during which our very generous LA guides had introduced the magazine to Julian Lennon, Billy Bob Thornton and a host of other stars, all of whom had been rather lovely about our Liverpool hometown. Spotting that His & Hers’ iPad was running low on charge, a friendly waiter provided a charger as he topped up our English Breakfast Tea, and plied us with delicious warm pastries (which is our kind of multitasking!) While some hotels specialise in ostentatious flourishes, the Luxe City Centre does things simply and does them well. Regardless of

48

whether you’re an A-lister or a weary traveller, the staff appear to treat everyone with genuine warmth, and will work hard to make your visit memorable. The location, interior design and above all service at this charming hotel make it one of His & Hers’ LA must-visits. Stay here if you get the chance, but be warned, you (really) won’t want to leave. www.luxecitycenter.com

SLS Hotel Beverly Hills

The term ‘design hotel’ is used rather lightly these days, but the SLS Beverly Hills is one of those rare gems, a hotel that genuinely lives up to the title.

W

ith legendary hotelier Sam Nazarian, mould-breaking designer Philippe Starck and world renowned chef José Andrés in the mix, the SLS Beverly Hills was never going to be ordinary. The walk through the lobby to the concierge desk alone is a feast for the eyes – gaze in any direction and you’ll be struck by the playful design details around every corner. The SLS’s location, just a few blocks from Rodeo Drive and The Grove shopping centre, made it the perfect base for His & Hers’ next assignment, reporting from Topshop’s VIP store launch at The Grove (featured

49

on p40). Our chic, contemporary room provided a very pleasant setting in which to slip into a little something from high-street favourite Topshop before meeting with Sir Philip Green. After spending an exciting few hours at the Topshop launch, we returned to the SLS’s famous bar & restaurant, The Bazaar by José Andrés, for an interview with rising star of the US music scene, Michael Lemmo (featured on p42). Having begun our interview in a quiet corner of the stylish bar area, His & Hers quickly discovered that we’d filled every notebook we’d brought to LA with shorthand notes (trust us, there’s a lot to write about in this city!) An attentive member of staff offered to bring over some note paper so that the interview could continue and swiftly reappeared with some of the nicest stationery that we’ve ever seen (and at His & Hers, where we have nightmares about paperless offices, we see a lot of

50

good stationery!) When we finally retired to our room, having concluded a thoroughly enjoyable interview, we discovered that the space was just as comfortable as it was stylish; the bed was well designed, the pillows plump and happily the contemporary chic bathroom features a shower so enticing that you’ll happily leave the comfort of your bed for it. We were charmed by the impeccable service and attention to detail at this design lover’s dream of a hotel. The SLS offers indulgence without stuffiness and luxury without formality. If you’re looking for a refreshingly modern hotel where good design matters, then this is the place for you. www.slshotels.com

W

hen your brilliant designer and fashion writer are both based in London, your style editors are working their magic in Manchester, and you’re on a mission to stay abreast of the key fashion and beauty news around the world, it can be challenging working out where on earth you should be holding those all important meetings. The one thing His & Hers has learnt over the years is that when in doubt, it’s generally best to head to London. Upon arriving at Kensington’s popular Base2Stay hotel, a chic, comfortable and surprisingly keenly priced hotel which had been recommended to us more than once by regular business travellers, we were pleased to note the hotel’s simple, understated design. You’ll find everything you need here and nothing you don’t (an important distinction if you plan to spend a lot of time in the capital without racking up an eye watering hotel bill). Our room was spacious and the simple neutral colour palette was very easy on the eye. We appreciated features like the mini kitchen (with a microwave, fridge and coffee machine) and free Wi-Fi which help to make your hotel room feel like

home regardless of how long you’re staying for. If you don’t fancy cooking, the team at Base2Stay clearly have excellent relations with local suppliers and restaurant and will gladly point you in the direction of fantastic local eateries. Also, as the hotel’s conveniently located near Earls Court tube station, it’s easy to get around, or, if you’re enjoying Base2Stay’s ‘home comforts’ a little too much to leave, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty persuading contacts to meet you at this cosy home-from-home. The Hilton London Metropole really is ideally located and following a multi-million pound investment in its lobby, it provides a very pleasant base from which to meet with business contacts or friends.

His & Hers was delighted with our incredibly spacious room (a rare treat when staying in the Capital). We also liked the opulent design details, oversized bed and large bathroom. Following a day of meetings, we met a good friend for dinner and drinks at the hotel’s Fiamma Restaurant. The food was delicious and the servings generous and despite the large scale of the hotel, our waiter was so thoughtful and attentive that we felt we were being given an intimate, friendly dining experience at the heart of the hotel. Following dinner, we headed to the hotel’s popular bar area for a night cap. Staff and guests alike were friendly and the gentle hum of conversation around us helped to create a relaxing ambiance. If you want to be at the heart of the action and to make your journey from the train station or airport a smooth one, then this is the hotel for you. www.hiltonlondonmet.com

An Insiders’ Guide to

Kitchen W8 and Sonny’s Kitchen Both under the control of chef Phil Howard, Michelin-starred Kitchen W8, and local haunt Sonny’s are similar, but different! With some willing friends in tow, I went off to try them both out… WORDS: Hannah Ramsay

I

Kitchen W8

t’s not often you read reviews of Michelin starred restaurants which say they’re reasonable in price, but that’s exactly what I found when I visited Kitchen W8. Unsure quite what to expect, I was secretly hoping for food served in smears, dots and soil-like textures. Tucked away on a quiet residential street in Kensington, Kitchen W8 is rather more subtle than ostentatious and its neutral décor is an altogether very classy affair. We sipped pink Champagne whilst deliberating over many delicious sounding starters, and both settled on the seared Orkney scallops, with wilted chanterelles, truffle pesto and celeriac puree, which came, in true Michelin-land fantasy style, in an artful smear. Presentation aside, the scallops were sweet and tender, and were complemented perfectly by their earthy accompaniments – a perfect start to the meal. My guest chose the braised cod with brown shrimp

and roasted cauliflower puree. Whilst the cod was indeed delicious, said puree was not only the highlight of her meal, but probably of her week. My breast of guinea fowl meanwhile, was served with trompette mushrooms, as well as crushed artichoke, chestnut puree – pleasingly served in dots - slivers of chargrilled pear and truffle shavings. While both our dishes were rich, there was still a lightness and the blend of flavours was beautiful. Finally we chose desserts and I couldn’t resist the bitter chocolate pave, which, much to my delight, was sat perpendicular to a line of chocolate soil. Accompanied by honeycomb pieces and sour lemon jelly, it really was perfectly balanced. It was a silky salted caramel parfait for my dining companion, which was served with chocolate mousse and peanut ice cream. It may have been sweet, but it was truly to die for and both dishes finished the meal on a high note. Kitchen W8 proves that you can eat at a Michelin restaurant at a reasonable price, www.kitchenw8.com

S

SONNY’S Kitchen

onny’s could be classed as the sister restaurant to Kitchen W8; slightly more rustic yet still effortlessly stylish, the restaurant has been a firm favourite with Barnes’ locals since it opened over 20 years ago. We sipped delicious peach Bellinis whilst perusing the menu, which consisted of upmarket bistro style dishes with unusual touches. I got off to a zingy start with tender soused mackerel, served with pickled cucumber and leek. Also featured were some juicy and flavoursome smoked oysters. My guest went for a quirky salad of eels, with avocado and bacon, which I have to say, looked very appetizing indeed. For my main course, I opted for the venison fillet, which sat atop creamed cabbage and beetroot puree. Perfectly cooked, the bold flavours really packed a punch and a few fries pinched from my dining companion were a particularly good addition. Said fries were the accompaniment to my guest’s classic rib eye steak, which was also served alongside a herb crumbed mushroom and a sweet caramelised onion. Despite the size of the steak, my guest still had room to try her first ever crème brûlée for dessert, with kirsch soaked cherries hiding at the bottom.

54

Having eaten many in my time, I was obliged to taste this one, and can confirm it was one of the nicest plus she is now a convert. For once not opting for chocolate, I went for the passion fruit soufflé with lime ice cream. Light as a feather and with the perfect balance of sweet and sour, it provided just the sugar rush I needed. Happily full, we finished off with coffees and chocolate. Pricewise, Sonny’s isn’t drastically different to Kitchen W8 and the food is not dissimilar -everything is just a little more relaxed. So for a casual evening of very tasty food, I’d certainly recommend a trip to sleepy Barnes and to this gem of a restaurant. www.sonnyskitchen.co.uk

A Taste of Sunshine His & Hers found shelter from the winter chill at Gecko, Liverpool’s warm and welcoming new Mediterranean restaurant. WORDS: Jean Hill

W

hen we were invited to Gecko Mediterranean Kitchen & Bar, Queen Square, for Sunday lunch, we were quite excited about experiencing a slice of Mediterranean cuisine in the midst of a chilly day in Liverpool. Stepping into the restaurant is like experiencing a burst of sunshine. We were warmly welcomed into a bright, modern, impressively stylish interior, where lime greens and terracotta blend with exposed brickwork that immediately brings to mind a sunnier climate. Debbie, our waitress, who was friendly and efficient, guided us through an extravagance of choice in expert fashion. We drank a delicious red wine and the starters arrived as we sat gently relaxing into a Mediterranean vibe. The Prawn Pil Pil was made with the best prawns I’ve ever tasted. The sauce worked some kind of magic and I’m assured the Soup du Jour and Bruschetta were equally delicious. Then, having taken a quick tour of the restaurant, which is a beautiful space, on came the mains. My choice was Marinated Sea Bass and it was superb, lightly cooked to melt in the mouth and infused with fennel and piquant herbs. The Greek Salad looked like a work of art and did not disappoint in the eating. The Moroccan Lamb Tagine was a treat for the taste buds, with a range of tangy flavours that complemented the lamb perfectly. I was the only one up for dessert, but what a concoction of deliciousness - Turkish Delight, Strawberry & Pistachio. The Turkish Delight had a slightly chewy consistency – all the more opportunity to savour the taste and it combined beautifully with the strawberries to create innocent pleasure. Altogether this was an amazing experience and while we’re waiting for summer to arrive, this dazzling cuisine will brighten any dull day. Tel: 0151 707 7780 www.geckorestaurants.co.uk

Pruno’s Culinary Passions His & Hers discovers Pruno, where the finest international cuisine meets the best locally sourced ingredients

P

WORDS: Jean Hill

runo might be newish on the block, but there’s a wealth of experience from restaurateurs: Sean Millar and Sheila Benson, who describe this restaurant as: ‘moving back to our roots in South Liverpool’ and the ‘fulfilment of our dreams and ambitions’. There’s a shared passion for excellent food, sourced locally and seasonally. Pruno is a social venue at the heart of the community, which was apparent as soon as His & Hers arrived for Sunday lunch on a dismal prospect of a day, featuring torrential rain interspersed with light drizzle. As soon as we stepped inside, it became a brighter aspect. There’s a Mediterranean feel about the decor, splashes of lime green, exposed brick, and classic decorative tiles adorn the long, very well stocked bar. It’s distinctive and intimate dining, yet it’s really spacious. There are stunning flower arrangements and colourful paintings to catch the eye, but what’s apparent straight away is the community of diners, groups spanning generations

but all looking equally at home, relaxed and obviously enjoying the whole experience. There’s an elegant upstairs dining space beautifully furnished, which would be ideal for events. We were warmly welcomed by Amy, our waitress, who was attentive and efficient. The starters were impressive: Falafel was moist and full of flavour, stylishly presented on a slate board. Melon, prosciutto, feta, and olive salad tasted perfect. The mains included skewered chicken with onion and peppers, served with home-made chips. Cod, with courgettes and mash had a pure taste, nothing in the mix detracted from the flavour of the deliciously fresh fish. Goats’ cheese and sweet red onion tart with new potatoes and salad tasted as good as it sounds. There was little room left for dessert, but coffee flavoured Crème Brûlée. was too good to miss: a smooth melt in the mouth indulgence. Lunch for two cost approximately £44; portions were generous and this represented good value for money. Tel. 0151 722 7171 www.pruno.co.uk

A night of simple pleasures at Liverpool ONE’s Bierkeller Since opening in Liverpool city centre several months ago, Bierkeller has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most popular drinking haunts.

W

hen His & Hers visited Liverpool’s Bierkeller for a quiet cocktail and a bite to eat with a friend, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. Although we’d previously visited Bierkeller for after-work drinks, we hadn’t noticed that the lively venue also served simple, unpretentious bar food. Our friend informed us that Beirkeller’s comfort food was proving very popular and suggested that we should find out what the fuss was about. As Bierkeller specialises in the kind of food you tend to crave when enjoying a drink or two (think burgers, chicken wings, onion rings and fries rather than virtuous salads), we opted for a platter featuring a selection of Bierkeller’s most popular choices, including chicken skewers, spring rolls and a tasty taco. The food provided a pleasant accompaniment to our drinks and was very reasonably priced. Also, you’ll find plenty of food and drinks offers (particularly early in the week) making Bierkeller refreshingly easy on the wallet for a city centre venue. Although Bierkeller is best known for its extensive list of beers, we opted for cocktails, which were served with a flourish. Although the bar undeniably appeals to men in search of the perfect chilled beer, we spotted several other diners sipping cocktails or

ordering from the surprisingly long list of spirits. His & Hers tends to focus on fine dining in the region. However, for those times when you simply want a nice chilled beer and a burger, or perhaps a glass of wine with some piping hot comfort food, there’s certainly a place for relaxed, informal venues like Bierkeller. Follow the crowd to one of Liverpool’s most popular bars for life’s simple pleasures. www.liverpool.thebierkeller.com
