Editor’s welcome
THE JUNE issue
Welcome
to the ‘Olympics Style Issue’, featuring three big fashion shoots, the first of which follows Team GB’s Hannah Whelan as she puts summer’s chicest gowns through their paces for ‘Poetry in Motion’, our movementthemed fashion story (from p10). Other highlights of the issue include our vibrant floral-themed womenswear shoot from p14, which provides a dash of inspiration on combining summer’s prettiest prints, and ‘Be Bold’, our striking menwear shoot from p32... We dare you to incorporate at least one of the striking shades or prints featured into your wardrobe to give any outfit instant edge! Our entertainment columnist Emma McHarrie reveals the latest highlights (and behind-the-scenes celeb fashion spots, which are a personal favourite!) from the Echo Arena on p23, while regular contributor Liz Taylor shares a moving extract from her diary of reinvention on p24. This month, Liz talks about how the sudden death of Jon Shenton, a talented and popular young designer, has affected those lucky enough to have worked with him. As one of those who was fortunate enough to work with Jon (who created Tracey Bell’s ad artwork for this magazine every month), I will miss his friendliness, humour and efficiency, all of which made me smile, even on deadline week. My thoughts go out to Jon’s family and to his many friends and colleagues at Tracey Bell. I hope you enjoy this issue, with its extra fashion pages. If so, please look out for the next edition, which features an extended style shoot in association with Weavers Door (one of our favourite Liverpool retailers).

hen His & Hers caught up with Hannah Whelan, the leading gymnast had her eye firmly on the prize of representing Great Britain on her home soil at the 2012 Olympics. Hannah, who recently moved to Liverpool to study for a Sports Development degree at John Moores University, clearly has a formidable work ethic, combining over 30 hours of training a week with her studies. However, even athletes deserve a little down time, so it was with great pleasure that the His & Hers team spent a few hours with Hannah in an airy studio space in Liverpool, bonding over a shared love of fashion before Hannah got to work modelling a few of our favourite gowns. Hannah will be appearing at the Echo Arena later this month for the British Gymnastics Championships. This will be the last chance to see her in action before the Olympics.

Whether they use it as their base colour, or as an accent to their outfit, these stylish ladies show us how they wear black in the summer months. WORDS and PICTURES: Hannah ramsay
Alex, 23
Waitress We loved Alex’s summery pastel look of Topshop trousers and pumps, Zara bag and Next cardigan. Note the accents of black in her statement Primark scarf, which stop the look being too sickly sweet.
20
Ruth, 37
Mother We loved the clash of leopard and stripes from Australian Ruth’s Louis Vuitton scarf and Seed jumper, which she wore over Country Road jeans. She finished the look with Bensimon shoes and a timeless black leather Alice by Temperley jacket.
Anna, 20
Student We loved Anna’s peachy keen look of Topshop blouse and Columbo trousers, contrasted with a black leather jacket and bag also from Topshop. Her boots were from Mango and she picked up that fab necklace for just £2 in New Look.
Chloe, 20
Textile Technician Chloe manages to make black leather look effortlessly summery by combining it with a lightweight trench from Topshop and pale Hobbs suede toecap pumps. Her dress can also be found in Hobbs and her handbag in Zara.
Gemma, 20
Blogger Gemma looked very chic in a black skirt and blazer from a charity shop and H&M respectively, paired with classic striped top from New Look. She added some edge to her look with on-trend studded brogues from Urban Outfitters.
Eleanor, 17
Student Eleanor brought some summery colour into her all black ensemble with this yellow top from Pop Boutique. Her trousers are from American Apparel, her boots from Topshop, and the jacket from a vintage boutique.
Surely almost every wardrobe now contains at least one biker jacket, one of 2011’s must-buys which remains an essential for this season’s casual chic. If you don’t already own one, try this skinny biker jacket, £100, Topshop. An animal print scarf adds interest to Ruth’s otherwise classical style. This bold animal print scarf will add a dash of fun to your monochrome outfits. Scarf, £16, Miss Selfridge.
S teal her style
Simplicity is the key to Ruth’s look, which requires no more than one understated accessory, such as these bracelets, to look ‘finished’. Bracelets, £16.50, The Jewellery Room.
This month we’re emulating Ruth’s pared back style. WORDS: Hester brodie
Ruth’s opted for flats for style and comfort while dashing about town. We like these ‘Fabian’ white sandals, £45, from Topshop, to keep your feet chilled this summer.
These super-soft super-skinny jeans are flattering and versatile. Snap yours up before they sell out. Jeans, £25, Dorothy Perkins. Ruth’s striped T-shirt is a true wardrobe staple, which is perfect for laid-back daytime chic. We like this version from Dorothy Perkins (£30).

Fantastic Florals
It wouldn’t be summer without some stand-out shades and we’re loving these classic wayfarer-style sunnies from Accessorize. Team with clashing florals for of-the-moment style. Sunglasses, £12, Accessorize
Fashion shouldn’t be restricted to your wardrobe, so update your kitchen with these gorgeous mugs by Matthew Williamson for Debenhams. Mugs, £6.50 (each), Matthew Williamson for Debenhams
If you’re a little bit cautious when it comes to prints, try this playsuit from Topshop. Its cute vintage feel and subtle colours are perfect for a lazy day soaking up the sun. Playsuit, £35, Topshop
Garden party, anyone? This chic dress is the ideal outfit to wear whilst sipping Pimm’s, eating cucumber sandwiches and generally looking like a real lady - the very definition of summer elegance. Dress, £125, French Connection
Hester’s looks
It’s that time of year again when floral prints are out in full force. However, this season they’re bigger and bolder than ever before and we love it! So here’s the best of the bunch...
Floral shorts are a big look this season and definitely one of our favourites - we’re loving the tropical vibe from these floaty shorts. Team with a loose tank top and throw over your bikini... perfect for Ibiza with the girls! Shorts, £17.99, New Look
22
Going to any festivals this summer? If so we’ve got the perfect purchase for you. This cheap and cheerful cool bag from the one and only ‘Primarni’ will ensure you stay just as cool as your drinks. Cool Bag, £6, Primark
With high-waisted styles still a strong look for summer, we’re loving getting away with crop tops! Team this one with tailored trousers for an edgier look or a fuller skirt for a cute girly feel. Crop-top, £20, Boohoo

hat an exciting month May was at Echo Arena. Westlife performed the first of their two Liverpool farewell shows (the second date is in June) to an emotional Liverpool crowd – the band explained they felt it was ‘the right time’ to split up but there were plenty of fans who clearly didn’t agree! The evening was a nostalgic trip down memory lane with on-stage screens showing footage of Westlife through the years - I can’t believe it’s almost 15 years since they first hit the pop scene. It was great to hear about their love of Liverpool – they especially liked some of the cheeky messages that fans had put on their banners. The X Factor auditions also returned to Liverpool with Gary, Louis, Tulisa & new judge Geri arriving in the city in search of the next big the last chance you have to see all of our Olympic singing star – I took a sneaky peak hopefuls before they head off to London later this at some of the auditionees and have summer… so come along and show your support! to say I’m feeling pretty confident There’s been a flurry of new events announced there’ll be some Scousers doing recently including Jessie J, Ronan Keating, Liverpool proud again. e lost a colleague in May. He was 24 years and 1 day old when he went to bed for the last time. The whole team are shocked, not just at how much quieter it is without a predominantly quiet man who conversed with his computer more than he did us (except over occasional cup of tea-bag-left-in-cup tea where he’d enthuse about his girlfriend) but at how we choose to walk around our grief. We bump into one another wide-eyed, muttering ‘dead?’ with an emphasis on an incredulous question mark. We console clients who we didn’t realise knew Jon as well as we did and everything electrical in the clinic has broken in the frozen days since his chair became empty – as it invariably would when our token bloke left us for an occasional day off – and has more inexplicably righted itself again in his too enormous to consider yet absence. We’ve moaned less this month. Appreciated more. It’s made us realise as death always does that life is precious. But it’s also made me reflect on how the promises we make ourselves are those which are broken most quickly with the least thought. As a widow one would think I would heed self-promises more than most – yet apparently not. So, for my part, I’m going to honour my colleague’s memory by doing the things I put off until tomorrow today and am returning to reinvention. And most importantly I’m thanking the people I love most for being wonderful and I’m instantly forgiving them when they’re not quite that always. In a non-
24
preachy manner I suggest you do the same. And in the still chrysalis interim I’m smiling a little bit harder and listening to our clients a little bit more. Tomorrow’s already here and for those of us lucky enough to enjoy it – we should make the most of our days and ourselves. And to the guy with the massive headphones who refused to text me on the bus because it wasn’t ‘cool like’ and who always had the answers to my 300 daily questions: I’m sorry for scolding you for lapsed punctuation or typos instead of thanking you more for tackling your massive workload even if you were 5 minutes late most days. We miss you Jon x

The Scouseboutique Launch Party
Palm Sugar Lounge, Liverpool ONE, hosted the recent launch of Scouseboutique.com. Over 300 specially invited guests including Marcus Collins, Maria Fowler, X- Factor’s 2 Shoes and James Michael and the ScouseWives cast members were welcomed by X-Factor girl band Estrella after which guests enjoyed a tongue-in-cheek fashion show celebrating Scouse style.
His & Hers’
Social Diary: round-up A summary of the month’s events & happenings in brief.
Malmaison’s ‘Pal Mal’ Event
Last month, Malmaison treated Liverpool’s business leaders to delicious canapés and wine, followed by a mini Reiss fashion show. Lip Couture, Yaffe Photography and Laura’s Little Bakery were on hand to help with the indulgence. Sharon Simons, Sales Manager, said, ‘even though the weather outside was frightful, Reiss and our other exhibitors brought the feel good factor along with good wine and food - a perfect evening!’
Stocktons’ Reader Event
His & Hers was proud to be a media partner for Stocktons’ recent VIP event at the Home Quarter, Liverpool ONE. Guests were treated to pampering treatments from Jo Malone, plus champagne and canapés and highlights of the night included an informal speech from furniture magnate Breck Stockton and an appearance from football legend Dirk Kuyt.
Morecrofts’ Evening of Glamour & Beauty
Morecrofts held an evening of glamour and beauty at Crosby Lakeside Marina to raise money for Sefton Women’s and Children’s Aid and Jospice. More than 50 women attended, raising more than £600 with entertainment captured by Simon Peter Photography, a make-up demonstration from Estee Lauder, fashion shows from Rosalinds and Novia and an indulgent massage demonstration from The Treatment Rooms.
The Blankstones Event at Merchants
The team from Blankstones Opticians treated guests to a night of pampering, while unveiling their most stylish specs and shades for summer at their recent party at Merchants Bar (62 Castle Street). The event was attended by a host of Liverpool’s stylistas keen to check out the latest eyewear trends.

The weather has started to pick up this month and we are beginning to see the fusion of winter and summer-wear as your wardrobes shift into all things light and linen. WORDS & pictures: Luke Trevaskis
Michael, 24
Retail Manager With a shirt and pant combo from Topman and loafers from River Island, it is clear Michael was paying attention to my trends page last month!
26
Dag, 21
Student With a name like Dag, we couldn’t expect anything but style from this Norwegian trendsetter. Looking totally untailored but super sophisticated, Dag pairs biscuit pants from Topman with River Island lace-ups, a jumper from Urban Outfitters and an all-weather jacket from Marks & Spencer.
Kamran, 26
Dental Therapist With a perfect smile, it is no wonder that this young gent is a product of Liverpool’s Dental Spa. When he isn’t delving into root canals and bleaching our pearly whites, it is good to know Kamran is paying as much attention to his style as he is to our oral hygiene. We are ‘stealing his style’ on the next page.
Kieran, 22
Student It is great to see how a rugged look can be pulled together in a simple and casual way. Kieran does a great job with his pastel blue H&M trousers, Topman tee, Zara jacket and black star Converse.
Luca, 25
Bellini Brand Ambassador Sporting the premium Italian casual-wear brand Harmont and Blaine, it is clear Bellini Restaurant and Bar is not just bringing great food to the city of Liverpool. Paired with Nike trainers, it is great to see how diverse this clothing range can be when dressing for all occasions.
Andrew, 23
Trainee Teacher We caught up with this next-generation educator in Liverpool ONE, showcasing shoes from Office, vintage jeans and an etched pullover from H&M. Keeping his girlfriend with him at all times, Andrew was wearing her hat to complete his ensemble!
Street scenes are becoming increasingly popular with designers and I hope it’s not long before Liverpool’s infamous waterfront is abreast a stylish tee! This New York City sublimation photo T-shirt is £22, Topman.

Kamran is channelling a very popular look for this season by pairing jeans with boat shoes and a simple yet effective characterized T-shirt. It’s a great way to add subtle colour to your look whilst staying cool this summer.
Although the most expensive item on the page, this burnt brown animal dystopia T-shirt will certainly get you noticed for all the right reasons. £75, Marc Jacobs, www. my-wardrobe.com
WORDS: Luke Trevaskis
There are sand-coloured shoes aplenty during these months and it can sometimes be a minefield when choosing which ones to buy. I always opt for comfort over style and these Sorrento Leather Boat Shoes seem to have both. £80, Kurt Geiger.
If you want to add an element of quirkiness to your look, opt for this white sublimation ‘Mickey’ tee. £24, Topman
As we know, the sun is never guaranteed in this country. I always keep a pair of dark jeans on standby for those cooler days; they are a comfy staple and one of the few warmer options that still look great with summer clothes. These Sparks Blitz jeans are £50, Topman.

It’s a common misconception that because it is summer we ought only to wear our most colourful creations. In truth, there is nothing more striking than someone in black on a sunny day. his & hers’ entertainment
Online V Live Gaming This month, Miles Dixon, the manager of Gala Leo Casino examines the pros and cons of online versus live casinos.
Online Casino Pros
Food and drink is cheaper You don’t have to talk to anyone if you don’t want to You can gamble and watch a TV show of your choice You can gamble faster You can play practice games for hours where in a live Casino you are usually restricted time-wise.
Cons If something goes wrong no-one is there to help you Nobody serves you your food and drink (unless you are lucky enough to have a very obliging partner) You don’t know for sure that everything is being run correctly (if in doubt, look out for accreditation). Your internet connection may disconnect at that crucial moment when you were about to win big.
Live Gaming Pros eep it real! Meet real people in a K real environment See with your own eyes that everything is above board Enjoy live music and atmosphere Interact with a real skilled dealer Have someone bring your drinks to you When you play poker, see your competitors squirm as you apply the pressure with your full house

Different strokes for different folks. If you like to get out there and experience the thrill of life, then the live experience is definitely more up your street. On the other hand, if you like your own company, then maybe the online experience is more for you. Not that I am biased, but the thrill of Leo Casino on a buzzing Saturday night is definitely not to be missed!

Mann island residents will live life to a greater degree “
L
ife to a greater degree” is how the apartments at Mann Island have been branded, and Countryside Property’s Regional Sales and Marketing Director Peter Vella says the development more than lives up to its marketing tag. “It’s a reflection really of what advantages the apartments offer in terms of quality of life, location, outlook and attractions,” said Peter. “People often use the `location, location, location’ mantra when discussing properties, but they would find Mann Island hard to improve upon.” The striking, granite-clad development sits at the heart of the historical Liverpool waterfront and rubs shoulders with the Three Graces and some of Liverpool’s finest cultural and leisure attractions, both new and old. “It’s hard to grasp just how desirable this site is without seeing it in context. It’s within a World Heritage Site, next to the historic Three Graces, it’s next door to the fabulous new Museum of Liverpool, it shares the waterfront with the magnificently restored Albert Dock and all its attractions, and a stone’s throw away is one of
31
Europe’s largest new shopping developments, Liverpool ONE. “If we had been asked to design the ideal residential development location then I don’t think we could have come up with anything much better than this, it’s ideal for purchasers and investors.” The two residential buildings housing the 376 apartments are known as Latitude and Longitude, connecting the development site with the waterfront and its strong maritime heritage. With the success of sales at Latitude, Countryside Properties have reacted to the strong demand and released apartments in Longitude with stunning views of the Albert Dock, The Graces and the Waterfront. One-bedroom apartments start at £120,000, and there are also two and three-bedroom apartments, plus penthouse options available. Countryside Properties also have shared equity options in place on a number of apartments. For more information contact 0151 231 1224, or book an appointment at the Sales and Marketing Suite at Mann Island. Alternatively visit the development website at www.mannislandapartments.co.uk

Ultimate After n As the nation celebrates the Jubilee and gears up for the Olympics, it’s suddenly fashionable to be British. How better to celebrate than by going on the trail of the ultimate afternoon tea?
Hard Days Night Hotel’s New Afternoon Tea
P
Best for: City centre chic.
ay a visit to Liverpool’s Hard Days Night Hotel on any afternoon and you’re likely to see a host of guests and shoppers tucking into their popular afternoon teas. The award-winning hotel has recently relaunched its afternoon tea, stating: “Served in the hotel’s award winning surroundings, the choice of several varieties of tea and a delicious menu of freshly prepared sandwiches and cakes will make for an unforgettable afternoon either with family, friends or colleagues.” His & Hers was impressed with the immaculately presented finger sandwiches served on a three tier stand, presented alongside a choice of preserves

and clotted cream and freshly baked cakes. General manager Mike Dewey said: “The idea around Afternoon Tea was initially developed as a type of private social event for ladies and it was only suitable for the likes of Queen Victoria. Now over 100 years later, it’s become an occasion for everyone to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming guests who want a truly special experience.” Afternoon Tea is served daily from 12 noon until 6pm. Due to its popularity, guests are advised to book in advance, particularly at weekends. Prices range from £17.95 for Afternoon Tea to £23.95 for High Tea, which includes a glass of champagne. ESPA Afternoon Tea at Harvey Nichols Manchester
H
Best for: Relaxation and indulgence.
arvey Nichols is well known for offering indulgent afternoon teas in chic modern surroundings. To make this traditional British treat even more enticing, this June they’re offering a half-hour ESPA facial and Champagne Afternoon Tea for just £50 (with £25 being redeemable on ESPA products in store). His & Hers couldn’t resist the chance to combine a spot of culinary indulgence with pampering, so were amongst the first to check out the package. The ESPA facials were amongst the best we’ve ever road-tested. They’ll leave you looking and feeling refreshed and rested, and feeling utterly relaxed. A detailed skin analysis helps to tailor the treatment
and the double cleansing technique prepares the skin for the application of a masque, while a scalp massage with one of the brand’s hero products, Pink Hair and Scalp Mud, adds lustre to your locks. After our fabulous facials, we headed to the Harvey Nichols Manchester Second Floor Restaurant for an immaculately presented afternoon tea, featuring a selection of delicious finger sandwiches, plus a mouth-watering array of cakes and scones, accompanied by a choice of tea or Champagne. To book a half-hour ESPA facial along with a Harvey Nichols Champagne Afternoon Tea for £50, with £25 being redeemable on ESPA products in store, call: 0161 828 8839.

Chris & Mark’s Skincare Secrets
Mark and Chris Johnson White share their impressive knowledge of beauty and hair-care in their regular column. This month it’s about their commitment to ethical and safe beauty products. words: jean hill
H&H: What’s been happening this month that’s made a real impact on you? Mark: We travelled to Glasgow with Tracey Bell for the ‘Save Your Skin’ campaign, organised by Sandra McClumpha, founder of Fake Bake, to highlight the dangers of sun beds and sunbathing without sun block. Peter Andre really impressed us because the moment he arrived, he went straight outside to chat to the fans. He’s a really genuine person and he’s been out talking to young people to tell them about staying safe and the risk factors surrounding skin cancer. H&H: I know you recommend Fake Bake. What makes it so special? Mark: It works perfectly with our customised approach. You can achieve a light golden tan or build up a much deeper sheen, so it can be matched to natural skin tone, but will never turn orange. Fake Bake Express is fabulous because it develops into a natural looking tan in 60 minutes. We both use this product, and that speaks volumes. H & H: How can we pamper our dried out sundrained locks and is there an overall look that’s on trend, yet achievable? Chris: Try L’Oréal sun-screen, Solar Sublime: it includes shampoo and a masque to nourish and protect. The overall look is bright blonde or dip-dyed. You can work this look with heavy duty eyeliner, Dream Weave mascara (dubbed eyelash extensions in a tube) and cut-off denim shorts: think Bohemian Rhapsody.
38
H & H How do we protect our skin? Mark & Chris: Heat rays are more condensed (and so potentially more harmful) in the city, because they reflect off glass in buildings in congested areas. So think about SPF (Sun Protection Factor) that filters out UVA and/or UVB (ultraviolet radiation). Try Tracey Bell Age Perfecting mineral makeup, L’Oréal Derma Genesis or Clarins range of skin care that incorporate SPF and always use sun block in the sun. Chris & Mark want to flag up the launch of Debenhams in Chester on June 26th 2012, where they will be taking a lead in the celebrations. It’s designer shopping paradise. Tickets are available through Debenhams in Chester.
