Welcome

to the Spring Fashion Issue, for which we’ve tracked this season’s key trends from the catwalks to the streets of Liverpool.

We’ve scoured the high street for the most wearable fashion and accessories to see you through Ladies’ Day and the Grand National at Aintree (one of the highlights of His & Hers’ social calendar) in style.

Key features include ‘All Dolled Up’, Women’s Style Editor Hester Brodie’s playful accessories’ shoot from p16, and our ultra-luxe new-season menswear shoot from p32.

Fashion journalist, Hannah Ramsay, hot-footed it to the capital to compile our London Fashion Week Street Smart special from p20; while Men’s Style Editor, Luke Trevaskis, focused on tracking down Liverpool’s best-dressed men, with a little help from his Street Smart team from p36.

KIRSTY DOYLE UNVEILS TWO NEW COLLECTIONS With fashion week season upon us, and new international collections launching every day, it seems only fitting that His & Hers should put the spotlight on designers closer to home. words: Hannah Ramsay

t seems only fitting that His & Hers should put the spotlight on designers closer to home. This month has seen the launch of acclaimed Liverpool designer Kirsty Doyle’s shiny new collections… and we love them both!

A first time collaboration between Kirsty and her talented younger sister Jessica, the mainline collection features bold graphic prints, another first for the brand, alongside the classic draped pieces with which Kirsty has become synonymous. Courtesy of Jessica, the print is based on broken facets of minerals, combined with the colours of an extravagant holiday in Barbados in the 70’s, and we think would hold its own next to some of fashion’s greatest prints. “Layering imagery creates different dimensions within the dress”, she explains.

But it’s not just about the print, look closer and you’ll see Kirsty’s softly sculptured silhouettes

inspired by 3D origami folds and pleats. “We wanted the pieces to be both wearable and desirable, and to have a luxury feeling that would work against softer jersey separates to give a contemporary LA look,” Kirsty adds. It’s this nod to laid-back sportswear - loose shapes and the pairing of the cropped marl tees - which makes this collection so fresh and effortless to wear.

We particularly love the Citrine Skirt (centre left) and the Anatase Dress (centre right) and could certainly see us wearing them, while sipping the cocktails on that aforementioned Barbados holiday.

And as if a mainline collection wasn’t enough, Kirsty’s also just launched the new collection for her diffusion line Kiki.

With a candy shop colour palette, metallics and frills, it’s the ultimate in pretty sophistication.

The ‘Dancing on Ice’ live tour comes to Liverpool

Fans of ‘Dancing on Ice’ (one of ITV1’s most popular shows) will be pleased to hear that the live tour will be coming to the Echo Arena on 1st-2nd May,

eidi Range, Chico and reigning champion Sam Attwater will be the first celebrity contestants to join the ‘Dancing on Ice’ live tour.

After wowing more than one million people across the country in previous years with stunning ice performances, skating legends Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean will embark on a sixth live UK tour of Dancing on Ice, starting in Newcastle on Friday 13th April, 2012.

Torvill & Dean will be joined by Sugababes’ singer Heidi Range, X Factor singer Chico and reigning ‘Dancing on Ice’ champion and Ex-Eastenders actor, Sam Attwater.

Sam displayed some of the most natural ability on the ice in the 2011 ITV1 series and live tour, working hard during each performance to impress the judging panel. He consistently pushed himself to achieve higher scores and more complex moves on the ice alongside his skating partner Brianne Delcourt.

Sugababes’ singer Heidi Range has performed at some of the UK’s biggest music venues and, with skating partner Andrei Lipanov, her winning smile and increasing confidence has gained her high scores on the ITV1 show every Sunday night.

Former X Factor contestant Chico is no stranger to performing in front of millions of people on television and is now proving to be one of the TV audience and judges’ favourites.

All of the celebrities will be trained and choreographed by Torvill & Dean, who will also perform routines choreographed exclusively for the live tour.

The three-and-a-half week UK tour will travel to arenas across the country. At each performance, the audience can vote for their favourite celebrity skater. Using the same format as the hit ITV1 show, spectators can use their mobile phones to vote by text for their favourite

celebrity. As with previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity. An impressive £106,475 has been raised to date, which has been donated to the Royal London Society For The Blind and Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

As a director in law firm Brown Turner Ross, Samantha Bushell specialises in family and matrimonial cases, and we caught up with her during her busiest time of the year.

“February is always one of my busiest times of the year,” said Samantha. It follows hot on the heels of ‘D Day’, the first week back to work in January. D Day is the legal profession’s busiest day with regard to people filing for divorce. “The festive season finds people spending more time together, and sadly for some couples this brings about a life-changing New Year’s resolution. My clients often raise issues that have caused tension for some time but were ignored because they wanted to maintain a sense of normal family life at Christmas.

And the pressure of Valentine’s Day adds to the stress, so during the first quarter of the year I see more people who are looking to file for divorce than at any other time.

“I advise my clients to take some time to reflect because divorce isn’t an easy process and I want them to be certain that they have explored all options open to them before they proceed, especially if there are children involved.

“I am a member of the Collaborative Law Panel, which involves each party working with a lawyer specially trained in Collaborative Law. This process sees the parties work outside the Court process, setting their own agenda and meeting on neutral ground with their lawyers, in an effort to arrive at agreement on everything in an amicable manner. This can save time, money and - provided each party embraces and fully commits to the process - Collaborative

When His & Hers caught up with freelance PR, Clare Delve, she was fresh from planning a series of creative campaigns to raise the profile of her Liverpool-based clients. This is just the latest challenge in a varied career that has seen Clare tackle everything from interviewing A-listers to news broadcasting to founding her own PR company.

Clare told His & Hers, “I always wanted to be a journalist - or failing that, a singer!” While studying journalism, Clare embarked upon a work experience placement with Radio City.

After learning the ropes, she was offered a job with the station when she was just 21, giving her her first break in broadcast journalism.

Clare said: “I was there for three years all together and during that time I was lucky enough to do a lot of things most people don’t get to, such as interviewing Samuel L Jackson and Sir Paul McCartney.”

Clare then moved to Radio Merseyside, where she honed her skills in broadcast journalism, before deciding to branch out into PR, working as a Media Manager for the Council. Following spending cuts in 2011, Clare felt that her job was under threat, so decided to bite the bullet and take a voluntary redundancy package, using her pay-out as the initial investment to launch her own PR company, Delve PR. Less than a year later, Clare has built up an impressive client list, representing thriving Liverpool businesses including Laura’s Little Bakery and Rhubarb and Custard.

Clare said: “I think good PR’s all about finding out people’s unique stories and telling them to the right people. I want to give small businesses the chance to work with the right people, and opening glossy magazines and seeing my clients featured is the best feeling in the world.”

hort-term fixes to health and fitness can be beneficial as just that; however, sustainable diet and exercise should be considered as life choices. It is a good idea to address every aspect of fitness if you want to improve. A plan designed to suit your individual fitness needs is advisable, along with a training diary to monitor your progress and acknowledge personal achievement in the desired areas, which will help to keep you motivated.

Be realistic with your fitness goals: it takes approximately two months to build a sound fitness base; the idea is then to continue building on that base. True fitness results from a combination of methods, so look to include cardiovascular, strength and conditioning, flexibility and mobility into your plan. Look at all the fitness options, do a little research, or turn to a professional for advice.

You will find the different areas to be complementary – for example, as you become more flexible you will become stronger.

Find a form or forms of exercise that you really enjoy, that you look forward to and strive to work hard at. Remember that there is a fine line between dedication and focus, and obsession and addiction. Exercise should be seen as a positive, benefitting your life, but - like anything - it has the danger of turning into a negative; therefore it is important to keep perspective.

Be realistic with goals; think clearly about exactly what you are trying to achieve, and why you wish to achieve it. Remember that inner health is just as important as improving our outer appearance. We often take our bodies for granted until it is too late; prevention is better than cure.

If you wish to push your body to extreme limits, just be sure you are doing so for the correct reasons; it can be highly motivational and rewarding to work towards goals, such as a marathon, for example. But whatever you do, don’t let vanity guide you.

I

don’t like saying that I lost my husband. Not because it means he’s dead (although that remains unbelievable) but because it makes me sound careless. I don’t like to say he passed away – because nothing about him ever did.

So in September when I begged the heavens for reinvention I wasn’t surprised when moments later I was offered a meeting at the Tracey Bell Clinic on Hanover Street. Nor was I surprised when I was offered the position of Business Manager, although I was mildly alarmed when I accepted it, and positively shocked when I realised I was quite good at it although out of my comfort zone most days.

It is February now. The month of love. And I know it’s trite but I really am beginning to love me again.

Not the me I used to be (although I remember her fondly) but the me who is becoming who she was meant to be.

The frown lines I picked up at a funeral and laid down on an empty pillow are beginning to ease, banished with injections and the threat of imminent laughter with clients. My skin is shiny from pillaging medical skin treatments (Skinscription) rather than tears.

and resolve is in the sights of our Personal Trainer, Jane Grogan, who gives me something to get out of bed for – even if it’s 7am on dark mornings - as she teaches me about willpower.

Ocean Buffet’s Glittering Launch Party The His & Hers team joined hundreds of specially invited VIP guests for the glittering launch night of Southport’s latest eating place, the Ocean World Buffet & Bar in Ocean Plaza.

Guests were greeted on the red carpet by a fire-eater and invited inside to enjoy champagne and canapés.

VIP guests included Danny Latimer from Desperate Scousewives and Everton legend Graham Stuart. All VIP guests enjoyed the seemingly neverending buffet, choosing from Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Portuguese cuisine.

Cocktails served included the new ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘Oceano Beso’, which were named by competition winners Anthony Lopez and Tamzin Elliott, respectively.

Ben Aslan, owner of Ocean World Buffet & Bar said, “It has been an honour to launch my new restaurant in the resort; all the customers have raved about the selection of food on offer, and the atmosphere has been amazing this evening.
