HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

IT’S EXCITING BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH, BUT AT HEART I’M A SHOPKEEPER AND IT’S ONLY WHEN THE STORES ARE OPEN THAT WE’LL BE ABLE TO TELL IF WE GOT IT RIGHT.

I

f you’ve ever seen Theo Paphitis (one of the UK’s most high-profile entrepreneurs) in full swing on Dragon’s Den, cutting countless business hopefuls down to size with a raised eyebrow and witty put-down, perhaps you’ll understand why my excitement over interviewing one of my business heroes was tempered with more than a dash of apprehension. What if my carefully prepared interview questions weren’t up to scratch? Might I provoke a disdainfully arched brow, or worse, a declaration that: “This interview just isn’t for me – I’m out!” No surprise then that by the time our interview to discuss the launch of Theo’s new lingerie brand Boux Avenue finally came around, the subject of nerves was looming large. So much so that with greetings out of the way I forgot all my prepared questions and asked instead: “With so many years in business, and so many successes behind you, do you still get nervous about new launches like Boux Avenue?” Theo replied without hesitation: “Of course I still get nervous! I was nervous last night (before Boux Avenue’s official launch party in London) and I’m nervous about going to Scotland tomorrow (for the first of a series of store openings). It’s very exciting

building a business from scratch, but at heart I’m a shopkeeper and it’s only when the stores are open that we’ll be able to tell if we got it right.” Feeling reassured by the revelation that even dragons get nervous sometimes, I decided to launch into my first ‘official’ question. However, Theo quickly pre-empted me with a question of his own, asking where I shop for underwear. When I replied that I like Figleaves (an online retailer) and also La Senza (a brand that Theo dramatically revived before selling his shares in the company in 2006), Theo responded: “Then Boux Avenue is perfect for you because it’s an online business with shops. If you want to go in to a store we’ll give you an experience to remember – if not you can shop from a really broad range of underwear online.” Speaking of store openings it seemed only fair to ask when Boux Avenue would be arriving in Liverpool (where His & Hers’ office is based). Theo was clearly excited by the prospect of coming to Merseyside, declaring: “There has to be a Liverpool store! It’s just a case of finding the right property in the city.” In the meantime our nearest Boux Avenue store will be opening within the Trafford Centre shortly and the brand’s

7

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

website went live the day after our interview. Theo has also been interacting with potential customers online, even taking the bold step of unveiling the brand name Boux Avenue on Twitter first. He confessed: “I’ve definitely become a Twitter fan – I never thought I would, but there’s no denying that it can be a useful tool in business.” With more than 105,000 followers on Twitter at the time of going to press, Theo is clearly ahead of the curve when it comes to social networking. However, he also knows the value of some of the more old-fashioned aspects of his business, such as getting the shop-fitting and design details right. “Our shop-fitting is unrivalled”, he said, adding: “we’re catering for demanding women who don’t want to buy their underwear along with a cooked chicken. Lingerie is second skin – the most personal item of clothing you’ll ever buy, so it has to be right. Perhaps when women are very young they’ll put up with uncomfortable shoes and bras to look good, but that phase doesn’t last long. Ultimately you want comfort without compromising on fashion and that’s what we’re offering.”

8

Theo has a strong background in the lingerie market, having revived the fortunes of both Contessa and La Senza and he told His & Hers: “Contessa was the first chain to sell bras outside of department stores and La Senza broke the mould all over again. Once again with Boux Avenue we think we’ve identified a gap in the market but we won’t know for sure until the stores are open and we can see how they’re doing.” So who is the ‘Boux Woman’ who’ll shop in Theo’s new lingerie stores, or on his website? “She’s demanding when it comes to quality, service and price”, says Theo, “She wants to feel good about the product when she puts it on and to relive the good experience she had when she first bought it.” Catering to this demanding customer means investing heavily in the UK’s first six Boux Avenue stores and getting every detail just right – not an easy undertaking, but something that Theo’s confident that he’s managed. We’re looking forward to finding out if he’s right and hope we won’t have to wait too long for our promised Liverpool store. www.bouxavenue.com

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella arrives As the anticipation surrounding the new stage production of Cinderella builds, Matthew Bourne, the man behind the show, spoke to Emma Hill about his excitement over returning to Liverpool. Photographer: Simon Annand

W

hen His & Hers spoke to internationally renowned choreographer and director, Matthew Bourne, he was gearing up for his return to The Liverpool Empire with his company New Adventures. It’s a visit that’s already attracting a lot of interest from theatre lovers who want to find out whether New Adventures’ stage production of Cinderella will live up to the success of Swan Lake which the company brought to the Empire in February. “There was such a nice welcome when we brought Swan Lake to Liverpool, so there is a degree of pressure”, said Matthew, adding: “But Cinderella’s sold out everywhere we’ve been and Liverpool audiences are great.” The production’s set during the London Blitz and Matthew says placing the fairytale in this historical context has brought the romance and drama of the story to life. “It was a time when people danced all night because they might die in the morning”, he explained, adding: “Also, this was the era when Prokofiev was writing the music for Cinderella.” However, Matthew’s keen to point out that this isn’t an old-fashioned production. “One interesting aspect that audiences may not be familiar with is that the whole thing’s in surround-sound”, he revealed. A fairytale stage show in surround-sound? Our curiosity is officially piqued! www.liverpoolempire.org.uk

JADE, 22

WINNINGWOMEN This month we caught up with the owners of two flourishing northern businesses to ask them for the secret to their success. WORDS: HESTER BRODIE & HANNAH RAMSAY

TANITH FACEY AND JO COTTRELL

Tanith Facey and Jo Cottrell are the Martin Lewis’s of Wirral, providing us with money saving offers that can’t be ignored. We caught up with them for a quick coffee to chat about their exciting new venture. From the moment the girls walk into the coffee shop it’s obvious that they’re brimming with enthusiasm for their new money-saving website. The site, which is set to launch in the first week of May, gives subscribers the chance to enjoy a deal a day and advertisers the chance to get new customers through the door. And best of all, it’s free. The only time you pay is when you actually buy the deal. And even then with promises of

20

deals that offer between 50% - 90% off we’ve got a feeling we’re definitely on to a winner here. Both Jo and Tanith have backgrounds in advertising with large companies and have over 20 years of experience in this field between them. So they’re clearly in an ideal position to know exactly what advertisers and consumers want. The girls are really looking forward to being their own bosses and have been planning the website for a while now to make sure that when they launch there will be a large number of highend companies on board. We have a feeling this is going to become a service we just can’t do without. www.bigdailydealcompany.co.uk

JAN WILLIAMS, PRO MED LASER CLINICS

Undergoing treatment for any illness is difficult, but when the side effects leave you with excessive hair growth, it certainly isn’t any easier. That was the challenge facing Jan Williams when she started receiving treatment for kidney failure a number of years ago. After being referred to dermatologists and endless clinics, her confidence was at an all time low, and she felt frustrated at the misleading information being publicised about laser hair removal. As a result, in January 2008, Jan left her job as a make up artist, and opened Pro.Med Laser Clinics, despite having no experience of running her own company. Fast forward three years, and clinics can now be found in Frodsham, St Helens and Flintshire, specialising in treatments such as laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation and tattoo removal. Jan says her dream was, and still is, to have a national brand of clinics that can provide help to people of all ages, shapes and sizes, and hopes that based on her own experiences, she can transform the lives of others. Surely that’s the most rewarding part of the job?

“When someone walks in smiling because they no longer have to be ashamed of unwanted hair or tattoos, it is the nicest feeling in the world to know you have helped someone!” So what’s next for this rapidly growing company? Well, they plan to open another clinic in Bolton by the end of this year and there’s a Pro.Med skincare range in the pipeline. Plus, with a string of business awards already under her belt, Jan has been nominated for Cheshire Woman of the Year, and will find out the verdict at the awards ceremony later this month. Exciting times! www.promedlaserclinics.co.uk

WHEN SOMEONE WALKS OUT SMILING BECAUSE THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO BE ASHAMED OF UNWANTED HAIR OR TATTOOS, IT IS THE NICEST FEELING IN THE WORLD!

A Taste of

Mexico On-The-Go

I

This month Emma Griffiths’s quest for the ultimate burrito took her to Mexigo on Bold Street.

f you’re looking for fresh, fast and delicious food with a South of the border taste, then look no further than Bold Street’s latest offering, Mexigo. Brought to us from the people behind Savina Restaurant & Cantina on Duke Street, Mexigo brings the same quality and flavour along with the option to eat in or takeaway your order to this city centre outlet. Comparable to the popular Barburrito, Mexigo puts forward a similar offering but with a level of freshness and attention to detail that only independent eateries can obtain. We popped in for an evening bite

22

before heading out to the cinema and were made to feel right at home. The restaurant is more spacious than its shop-front lets on and has been decorated around the colourful theme of Mexican lucha libre wrestlers - we even spotted a few sombreros! Getting started with a couple of Coronas, we both decided to try out Mexigo’s burritos. I opted for the chipotle chicken while my fellow scoffer went for the paprika rubbed steak, both filling our wraps to the brink with all of the usual suspects. To top off our meal we added Mexigo’s homemade corn chips with a trio of fresh salsa, guacamole and sour cream. The freshly prepared food was spot on and certainly gives Barburrito a run for their money. Combined with friendly service and a relaxing environment, Mexigo is perfect for a quick bite on the go. Delicioso!

A Steak House for the 21st Century Editor Emma Hill paid a visit to an all-you-can eat restaurant with a difference.

N

ot so long ago, visiting a Brazilian steakhouse or churrascaria sounded like the kind of exotic dining experience you’d have while travelling across South America, then the first churrascarias came to London and my southern friends proudly claimed them as their own. Now, seemingly overnight, several churrascaria chains have arrived in the north and everyone’s talking about them. My male friends, in particular, seem to have taken the all-youcan eat aspect (whereby passadors serve beef, lamb, chicken and sausages to your table continuously) into their hearts. When my dining companion and I arrived at Viva Brazil, we received a warm welcome from our waitress Roberta, who ushered us to our table before reappearing with our drinks in the blink of an eye. After this excellent start we approached the salad bar with caution; salad bars, like all-you-can-eat buffets, have too many associations with cheap-and-cheerful restaurants to put a spring in the average diner’s step. However, Viva Brazil’s was a pleasant surprise, featuring an imaginative mix of salad, veg and carbohydrates to make you feel less guilty about the large quantities of cooked meats you’ll almost inevitably end up eating! We took up the ‘full rodizio’ option (priced at £22.95 for dinner or £12.50 for lunch), and thoroughly enjoyed the perfectly seasoned cooked meats which kept arriving at our table (the steak, in particular, was delicious). Our verdict? Steak houses have come a long way since the Berni Inns of our childhood and this one is well worth a visit. www.vivabrazilrestaurants.com

Cricket’s British Fashion Council Party

L

words: Hannah Ramsay, PHOTOGRAPHER:Peter Goddard

ast month, Liverpool’s Cricket played host to The British Fashion Council Talent Launch Pad Party, in association with Elle Magazine. The initiative aims to help promising new designers launch themselves into the industry through financial support and guidance, and has recently announced its 2011 winners, which includes Scottish born Holly Fulton, known for her detailed hand drawn prints and Irwin and Jordan, Harrods’ current fastest selling label. His & Hers went along to see what it was all about... As party-goers nibbled canapes from 60 Hope Street, Fulton spoke of her inspiration for her latest

24

collection: “Think Joan Collins on a summer cruise in the sixties”, and her time working for Alber Elbaz at Lanvin. She later told me he gave her a lift to work everyday and laughed at her Scottish toned French. Morgan, of Irwin and Jordan then gushed over their love of traditional English tailoring and talked us through their exciting new print - each tag of the 100 limited edition dresses is signed by none other than Alexander McQueen’s illustrator, who designed the print. We think it’s amazing how our stylish city is willing to support such initiatives, and wait in anticipation to see what the future holds for these bright new talents.

Daniel Whittaker, who was pictured by leading Liverpool photographer and regular His & Hers contributor Matt Ford for this month’s men’s cover, has become the city’s latest fashion success story. PHOTOGRAPHER: Matt ford

aniel, who began his career as a plasterer has recently moved to Milan, the fashion capital, to model for the leading design houses. Pulse Model Agency sent model Daniel to Milan to establish him as the new face of top designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. After representing Daniel for one year there has been growing interest from the Italian market. Daniel started his modelling career when his sister forwarded some images to Liverpool-based

modelling agency, Pulse. At this time Daniel worked as a plasterer and had never thought about the bright lights of photographic shoots or the catwalks of Milan. Irene Bird, director of Pulse Agency, said: “As soon as we saw Daniel we knew we were on to a winner. He has such a unique and diverse look, with a down to earth personality and attitude that clients love.” Here at His & Hers we’re delighted to see someone bringing a refreshingly down-to-earth northern attitude to the catwalks of Milan and we’ll be following Daniel’s career with interest.

STREET SMART The time of the month comes around all too soon when Luke Trevaskis, our Men’s Style Editor, hits the streets with his entourage to find the latest looks off the catwalk. STYLE EDITOR & PHOTOGRAPHER: LUKE TREVASKIS, WORDS: EMMA GRIFFITHS

MITCH, 21

Student Mitch was dressed for the sunshine in his muted burgundy T-shirt from River Island and Republic chinos. His royal blue pumps are perfect for a casual saunter through the city centre and will see him right through spring and summer.

KEVIN, 18

Model We spotted Kevin’s clean, casual look a mile off. In his Ben Sherman jacket, Criminal Damage jeans and pristine Reebok trainers, Kevin’s simple look keeps the balance between thrown-on cool and minimalist precision.

STEFAN, 23

Student Stefan well and truly has the casual look down. In his homemade cut-offs, vibrant Topman cardi and simple Office slipons, Stefan wouldn’t look out of place at a summer festival. We applaud his no-nonsense approach to Saturday afternoon dressing.

PAUL, 31

Architect With his casual elegance, Paul could write the book on sophisticated daywear. In Timberland loafers that we’re sure to spot everywhere this summer, Paul rounds off his look with classic Ray-Bans, a Fred Perry cardi and a peek of his vintage Levis shirt.

CHRISTIAN, 20 Retail Assistant Storming down the high street in his classic Dr. Martens, Christian brings a touch of punk rock to this modern classic of an outfit. You really can’t go wrong with his crisp white T-shirt from H&M and tan chinos from All Saints. His burgundy scarf pulls the look into spring.

JAMIE, 20

Student Jamie’s relaxed yet individual style, with his Penguin shirt and Topman hat, caught our attention on Bold Street. Sporting a palette of muted tones he proves that you don’t need to be inyour-face with fashion to make a statement this spring.

oving into the summer season it’s time to add more colour to your wardrobe without losing sight of the toned-down look. Basically - your red becomes maroon, your purple becomes plum and your green transforms into pine (got the idea?). Colour can be incorporated into any look with carefully chosen chinos or a trendy tee. If you would consider yourself a novice colour expert, don’t try and dig-out a pair of old luminous fuchsia trousers reminiscent of the disco era!* The best way to instantly add colour to

complement the Navy and Camel trends of previous months, is through the various T-shirts that are to grace our streets over the next few months. Coming in all styles, with metallic print, sharp rips, frayed edges and LED displays - there is a lot that can go wrong with some of the migraine-inducing varieties that are on the market. Use my selection for inspiration when throwing yourself into the summer mood. If this was your initial instinct, it may be best to ask a friend for advice before putting together this season’s wardrobe!
