EDITOR’S WELCOME

TRAVEL ISSUE

Welcome

to the Travel Issue, featuring

our sensational swimwear shoot from p13, must-visit holiday hotspots from p24, plus our guide to the handbag heroes and menswear accessories you’ll be stashing in your hand-luggage this summer. As well as broadening our horizons as we researched this year’s chicest travel destinations, we’ve been keeping abreast of the key events in the North West for this month’s Social Diary pages (from p28). Highlights include Esquire’s search for Britain’s Best-Dressed Real Man at Hard Days Night Hotel. Big thanks are also due to Paul at PKPR for giving the His & Hers team an access-all-areas pass to indulge in a great evening of fashion-watching at last month’s LFC Players’ Party at Palm Sugar. We’re pleased to report that the players and their celebrity supporters all scrubbed up rather well, as they partied into the early hours at one of our favourite Liverpool bars. Another source of excitement at His & Hers has been the recent flurry of new businesses launching in the region. I was delighted to attend the recent launch of the innovative Big Daily Deal Company at the Leverhulme Hotel & Spa (see p28) and this was swiftly followed by So Coco Rouge’s launch party in aid of the North West Cancer Research Fund at which £1,200 was raised for the charity. At the time of writing, the team was gearing up for yet more celebrations, as we await the Saint Belle launch in Chester. Find out more about this company and the woman behind it from p20. If you’re in the process of setting up a new business in the region, please do get in touch and I’ll endeavour to shout about the successes of the best and brightest newcomers from the rooftops! See you next month.

Jennifer Ellison’s

for Stars Jennifer Ellison opens up about fame and family and reveals why sometimes the secret to happiness lies in putting yourself second in this month’s exclusive interview.

O

words: emma hill photographer: laura tickle

n the morning of Jennifer Ellison’s interview with His & Hers, the actress and singer was preparing to unveil her Liverpool-based Fame Academy (the business that has been her dream for the past six years). To say she was excited would be an understatement. Jennifer may have achieved a lot over the past two decades (dancing from the age of three, finding fame in Brookside while she was still at school, filling her teens and 20s with a string of TV and stage appearances, not to mention lucrative modelling contracts and a major Hollywood film). However, it was the dream of running her own performing arts academy

that really fired Jennifer’s imagination. “Launching my own business (The Jennifer Ellison Fame Academy) is something I’ve wanted to do for so many years”, she revealed, “but my son Bobby came along and I wanted to focus on him, then it took so long to find suitable premises. It’s been a long hard slog to get to this point; sometimes I’ll start work at 8am and still be working at 3am, but nobody gets to launch their own business without some sleepless nights along the way!” Jennifer’s Fame Academy has been set up to give youngsters the best possible grounding in dance, drama and singing, and what separates it from some rival businesses is that classes will be taught by stars of the West End Stage, TV and film,

“I want to find the stars of the future”

8

His&hers interview

so when teachers give advice on areas such as audition technique they’ll be able to base their advice on first-hand experience. “Because of shows like the X-Factor, people think you walk into your first audition and suddenly you’re a star”, said Jennifer, “but it’s just not like that; 50 doors might close in your face before someone says yes and we need to give youngsters the confidence and the work ethic to deal with that.” She added: “I’ve been working in this industry continuously for 16 years, so I know what’s involved. I’m personally managing some really talented children and I want to find the stars of the future. Liverpool has always produced so much talent, so it’s an exciting city to work in!” Jennifer is clearly itching to give tomorrow’s stars the skills they need to thrive in what can be a tough industry, but she’s also excited about the way her work/life balance will shift once the company’s established. She explained: “I’ll never give up performing, but now I have a family I want to spend less time on the road. In the future I’ll be able to pick and choose my jobs and to focus on Bobby. “When you’re happy in your family life it shows in every area”, said Jennifer, adding: “When Bobby was born I enjoyed putting myself second and that made me happier and more confident than focussing on myself.” And as she nurtures the city’s stars of tomorrow, we suspect that Jennifer’s confidence will only grow. We like your style, lady! www.jenniferellisonfameacademy.com

HIS & HERS PROMOTION

Reinvent yourself in your lunch hour

L

His & Hers takes a closer look at one of Liverpool’s most popular ‘quick fix’ beauty treatments.

et’s be honest, we’d all like to improve a little on what nature gave us, and if we can fit this in during our lunch break, then all the better! One of Tracey Bell’s most popular quick-fix treatments, which delivers noticeable results fast, is teeth whitening. Tracey Bell stated: “Teeth whitening or bleaching is one of

10

the most popular dental treatments desired by dental patients. Teeth whitening is a process where stains and discolouration are improved and in most cases removed, producing a whiter, brighter, more youthful smile.” Prices for tooth whitening at the clinic start from just £175 and the results (as shown) can be dramatic. WOMEN’S FASHION

STREET SMART This month our readers have been doing their best (in these lessthan-tropical weather conditions) to recreate summer’s chic city trends, from palazzo pants to nautical stripes. WORDS: HESTER BRODIE, PICTURES: JAMES BYRNE

BECCA, 21

Textile Student We loved the way Becca’s orange Topshop loafers toned almost perfectly to her cute printed 70s-style top, which she teamed with Zara’s take on spring’s ‘houlihan’ trouser. To finish the look, her vintage satchel adds just the right touch of ‘old-school’ to her on-trend outfit.

18

BETH, 18

Sales Assistant We spotted Beth nipping back from her lunch break in these gorgeous Topshop palazzo pants. Their subtle floral print is definitely the perfect way to rock the palazzo trend (and stay warm) in our changeable British climate.

ELISE, 17

Student Elise uses vintage finds to add an element of sophistication and quality, giving her outfit that added ‘wow’ factor. Take her shorts and blouse; yes you could get them in American Apparel and Zara, but it takes someone who knows their fashion to source a one-off version in a vintage shop.

KATIE, 28,

Drama Practitioner Quirky Katie teams nautical stripes with an oversized slouchy jacket - courtesy of high street giant New Look. Her ripped jeans are from Bench and her shoes were sourced from a boutique in Camden. She accessorises with a classic leather strapped watch and oversized turquoise ring.

SARAH, 32

Development Coorinator Trouser are making huge fashion waves at the moment and this pair is high on our wish list! And at under £30 from Dorothy Perkins we feel we’d be foolish not to. We love the way Sarah smartens up the look with a blazer, yet keeps the trousers true to their tirbal routes by adding a tasseled scarf and studded bag.

SARAH, 25

Banker Here at His & Hers we love timeless style, and it’s even better when updated with of-themoment pieces. Take Sarah’s classic striped tee and jeans - a simple outfit that will last 20 years; update with her white blazer (very O.T.M!) and those coral asos fringed sandals and you have a timeless classic with a modern twist.

WE KNOW WE HARP ON ABOUT IT, BUT A DECENT LEATHER HANDBAG REALLY IS A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND, AND GIVEN THE SIZE OF ELISE’S VINTAGE NUMBER WE CAN TELL SHE’S GOT HER LIFE IN IT! EVERY GIRL SHOULD OWN A SIMPLE TOTE AND THIS ONE AT FRENCH CONNECTION IS JUST THE TICKET. BAG, £180, FRENCH CONNECTION.

ELISE HAS GONE FOR TIGHTS AND BOOTS, BUT HERE AT HIS & HERS WE’RE HOPEFUL THAT THE SUN IS GOING TO BREAK OUT ANY MINUTE! SO DITCH THE TIGHTS AND THROW ON THESE LACE-UP SANDALS... AND FINGERS CROSSED THE SUN WILL FOLLOW! SHOES, £18, MATALAN.

S teal her style

BELTS ARE ALWAYS BETTER WHEN THEY’RE LEATHER - THEY AGE WELL SO YOU CAN KEEP THEM FOR YEARS, AND WITH A LEATHER WOVEN BELT YOU KNOW YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO GO WRONG. SO WE’VE SOURCED THIS ONE FROM THE MEN’S SECTION AT NEXT. BUY IT IN A ‘SMALL’ AND KNOT THE END ROUND ITSELF FOR AN OF-THEMOMENT FINISH. BELT, £18, NEXT.

This month Style Editor Hester Brodie recreates Elise’s polished style with high-street finds.

WE LOVED ELISE’S CARDIGAN; HOWEVER IT’S A LITTLE WARM FOR THE CURRENT WEATHER, SO WE’D SUGGEST THIS LIGHTER SAND-COLOURED VERSION FROM HOBBS. CARDIGAN, £79, HOBBS.

ONCE AGAIN ELISE SPOTS A VINTAGE FIND AND WE’RE ALL SUPER JEALOUS. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO BETTER PLACE TO START A DENIM SHORT HUNT THAN TOPSHOP. WE LOVE THESE HIGH-WAISTED MOTO SHORTS - SIMPLY ROLL THEM UP TO CREATE A TURN-UP FINISH LIKE ELISE HAS DONE. DENIM SHORTS, £34, TOPSHOP.

A DECENT VINTAGE BLOUSE IS USUALLY HARD TO FIND, BUT ELISE’S IS A GEM - JUST LOOK AT THE DETAIL IN THAT COLLAR! HOWEVER, THIS SLEEVELESS BLOUSE WITH PETER PAN COLLAR AND SUPER CUTE BUTTONS IS THE NEXT BEST THING AND IS AVAILABLE AT THE CLICK OF A BUTTON AT PAPRIKAFASHION. CO.UK. BLOUSE, £25, PAPRIKA.

HIS&HERS LIFESTYLE

WINNING WOMEN Hannah Ramsay speaks to two northern women who are quietly revolutionising the fashion world. WORDS: HANNAH RAMSAY

KATYA WILDMAN “My earliest memory was of drawing patterns with crayons as my mum made them into paper dolls”, recalls Katya Wildman, now a successful costume-turned-fashion designer, “I’ve just always wanted to dress people”. When working in costume, a job that’s taken her all over the world, Katya spends her days translating the visions of directors into re ality. One project could be dressing a Roman army, the next, a prima ballerina. “I love working with people who are completely engrossed, be it with washing powder or Chanel.” “My background in costume has given me knowledge of different times and societies,” Katya says, but when it comes to working on her own label, it’s all about designing clothes that make women look and feel amazing.” Unable to find a dress that fitted her slim but voluptuous figure, Katya designed the original ‘Bombshell Dress’. Inspired by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, The Bombshell makes the waist appear smaller and balances out the hips and shoulders, creating an hourglass silhouette. Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson famously bought 12 Bombshells at once and the dress has been unbelievably successful. But what does the future hold? “I just want to grow the Katya Wildman brand with innovative prints and classic shapes,” said Katya, “and I’d love the Bombshell Dress to live on for generations.”

ANNABEL MOUNT-KIRK, SAINT BELLE

It takes confidence to go into business in the current climate so we knew we had found someone special when we met Annabel MountKirk, who launched both her business and debut lingerie collection almost simultaneously. Annabel has recently opened her first store, Saint Belle Lingerie, on the fashionable Chester Rows, in the heart of Chester. The stylish store offers a personal service, which Annabel and her team have perfectly tailored for their customers, and sold alongside their own collection are leading names such as Stella McCartney and Mimi Holliday. “I wanted to offer something different” said Annabel, “Something to really shake up the high street lingerie offering. So I set out to design the first ‘Saint Belle’ collection, developing an affordable, luxurious lingerie range with sizing that appealed to the masses rather than the minority. “Making sure our own label range offers small back sizes and A-GG cup ensures that we can offer luxurious underwear regardless of size. “I’m delighted that I’ve been able to develop Saint Belle as a home grown brand,” said Annabel. “I’m so proud that the collection is ‘made in England’ and see the brand as a little bit of designer luxury at affordable high street prices. I’m looking forward to the future with additional stores and further collections already in the planning”. www.saintbelle.com

A Lip-Smackingly Good Launch

The Real Food Company marked its Liverpool debut in style by creating an edible Liver Building made entirely of products from its new Liverpool ONE ‘EAT’ store. Liverpool art company, Hallangen Art, created the masterpiece which took 27 hours to complete. Faith MacArthur, co-founder and brand director at EAT said: “We wanted a way to show Liverpool that we’re really pleased to be here and what better way than recreating the city’s most famous landmark with our freshly made food!”

His & Hers’ Social Diary: roundup A summary of the month’s events & happenings in brief.

Malmaison’s Lavish Ladies’ Lunch

Kirsty Doyle and Yaffé Fusion Art hosted the latest in a series of indulgent ladies’ lunches at Malmaison, Liverpool. Kirsty talked guests through summer’s key styles and trends, while Yaffé Fusion Art shared their top tips for looking and feeling good in front of the camera. For details of the next big lunch at the Mal, visit: www.malmaison.com

Britain’s Best-Dressed Men Flock to Hard Days Night Hotel Liverpool’s best-dressed men flocked to Hard Days Night Hotel as it played host to Esquire magazine and my-wardrobe.com’s search for Britain’s Best-Dressed Real Man 2011. Guests were treated to a pop-up bar hosted by gorgeous Peroni girls, music by world-renowned DJ Sophie Lloyd, as well as delicious canapés created by the Hard Days Night catering team.

Henry Holland Hits Liverpool

Legendary fashion designer turned DJ Henry Holland made a rare visit to Liverpool to play a set at Boodles’ festivalthemed party. Guests included Alex Gerrard (who has recently announced her pregnancy with her third child) who looked glamorous in her Roberto Cavalli fringed jacket. The showroom dazzled with a grassed carpet and grass couch and tables, while Cricket boutique showcased some amazing festival outfits and Cream VIP DJ Alan Hartley entertained guests.

The Pop-Up Art Shop at the Metquarter

Members of Liverpool Commercial District Partnership gathered at Metquarter for the exclusive launch of dot-art’s new Pop Up Art Shop last month. VIP guests enjoyed champagne and French delicacies courtesy of Café Rouge at the private viewing, which showcased work from the region’s most talented artists. Staged by dot art, the Pop Up Art Shop is a unique concept designed to give local artists the opportunity to display their work in a ‘non gallery’ environment.

The Big Daily Deal Launch

LFC’s Players’ Party at Palm Sugar

Palm Sugar played host to Liverpool’s glamorous end-of-season players’ party, which attracted a mix of well-known faces from the world of entertainment and sport last month. Finger food from Chaophraya and chilled Carlsberg was served to guests including Liverpool FC legends like Robbie Fowler and a gaggle of famous Liverpool supporters. His & Hers’ style team was, of course, on hand for some serious fashion-watching on the night!

Tanith Facey and Jo Cottrell, the founders of The Daily Deal Company, who were featured in our recent Summer Style Issue, launched their new business with a bang at a glittering evening at The Leverhulme Hotel & Spa last month. Tanith and Jo have spent the last 18 months developing The Big Daily Deal Company, which will offer heavily discounted deals on the best things to eat, drink and do on the Wirral and in Chester. www.bigdailydealcompany.co.uk

STREET SMART

After finding Liverpool’s streets unusually quiet, Men’s Style Editor Luke Trevaskis and photographer James Byrne embarked upon one of their most challenging ever Street Smart sessions, STYLE EDITOR: LUKE TREVASKIS, PICTURES: JAMES BYRNE

PAWL, 19

Catering Assistant Often spotted out leading Liverpool’s fashion crusade, we caught up with Pawl on Church Street sporting an ensemble that is as cool as his name. With en-trend camel pants, a pastel-blue tee and denim rolled-up shirt, Pawl completed his look with black boots – a firm favourite of the Liverpool fashionista!

34

ZISIS, 27

Flannels With his suave appearance it is no surprise that this beacon of sophistication shone through the window of Flannels whilst he was entertaining his customers. This Greek ánthropos was wearing a Canali shirt and tie, Boglioni suit, and Tom Ford shoes and handkerchief.

JOEY, 20

Computer Student More used to staring at a screen than a lens, this chap was a little camerashy at first. Slowly warming to the idea of becoming Britain’s next top model, Joey took us through his outfit. Pairing a Pop Boutique shirt with tight jeans, Nike trainers and a Vans T-shirt, Joey would not have looked out of place in a board-park.

JAMES, 24

DJ – Chibuku With this burgundy jacket from Reese, who could have missed this stylish gent! Teamed with staple jeans from Urban Outfitters, Doc Martins and Ray-Bans, James championed geeky-chic on Bold St.

ANDREW, 26

Assistant Manager, American Apparel Having spotted Andrew’s colleague Sammy-Dean a couple of months ago – it would appear there is much competition in the staff room of American Apparel. With his Kurt Geiger shoes, H&M jeans and American Apparel shirt, I still can’t understand why Andrew wouldn’t give up his New Look jumper for the greater good of my wardrobe!

MIKE, 18

Student Despite being the youngest guy in this month’s Street Smart, Mike certainly knows where to spend his student loan. With Unconditional pants, Vans trainers, a Ralph Lauren gilet and a V-neck from Zara, Mike accessorises with a Gucci belt, Toy watch and Links of London bracelet. I am hoping he will let me know when he is compiling his throw-out bag!
