Diversity Initiatives: Setting Priorities

CONTRIBUTING EDITOR’S COMMENTS

Most Hispanics who will talk about diversity issues in the meetings and hospitality industry will tell you that in their opinion companies do not manage diversity very effectively. In fact, it has been stated that less than 10% of Fortune 1000 companies manage diversity effectively and many don’t manage it at all when it comes to including Hispanics in the overall equation.

Hispanics appear to get lost in the “diversity equation” as they continue to be underrepresented among the executive ranks of the industry. Whether at convention and visitors bureaus, hotel corporate offices, and just about any other company in this industry, very few Hispanics can be seen in executive decision making positions. More often than not, we continue to hear recruiters say we can’t find “qualified” Hispanics.

Diversity is Key to Global Success

Success in global markets depends on a well-honed intercultural workforce that understands the unique needs of people from different cultures and regions (LatPro.com*).

Setting diversity priorities that include Hispanics could help companies achieve needed change and allow for the inclusion of this diverse group within the corporate ranks of the industry. Indeed, changing population demographics now make it imperative.

Successful diversity programs should be both visible and measurable and should include Hispanics. “Diversity” without Hispanics is not true diversity.

And "Heterogeneity—a mixture of genders, ethnic backgrounds, and ages in senior management teams—consistently correlates with superior corporate performance." (Management Review, September 1998)

Travel and tourism is one of our nations most important and diverse industries and Hispanics play an important role within the industry. Companies dedicated to fos-

tering and facilitating diversity initiatives that include Hispanics should be recognized for their achievements.

The International Association of Hispanic Meeting Professionals and Hispanic Meetings & Travel magazine will present the industry’s first diversity awards program this year. The awards will recognize industry professionals and corporations for their vision, commitment and leadership to diversity initiatives that include the Hispanic community. More information on the diversity awards program can be found online at www.iahmp.org and www.hispanicmeetingstravel.com

The International Association of Hispanic Meeting Professionals hosted their annual conference in St. Augustine, Florida. Participants came from throughout the USA and Mexico. A pre conference tour presented an opportunity to learn more about the historic significance of St. Augustine (see page 20). Also, this group has introduced the Certified Diversity Meeting Professional for industry professionals. The CDMP is a welcome addition to the meetings and hospitality industry as its focus is the value of diversity from a global perspective (see page 23). Visit their web site www.IAHMP.org to learn more about this important certification program.

National Trust for Historic Preservation Accepting Nominations for 2014 America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List

he National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for its annual list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places速 . For over a quarter century, this list has highlighted important examples of the nation's architectural, cultural and natural heritage that are at risk for destruction or irreparable damage. Nominations are due on March 3, 2014.

"Historic places are a tangible reminder of who we are as a nation," said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "For over 25 years, the National Trust's list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places has helped shine a spotlight on threatened historic places throughout the

S

nation, helping not only to preserve these places, but also galvanizing local support for the preservation of other unique, irreplaceable treasures that make our nation and local communities special."

More than 240 threatened one-of-akind historic treasures have been identified on the list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places since 1988. Whether these sites are urban districts or rural landscapes, Native American landmarks or 20th-century sports arenas, entire communities or single buildings, the list spotlights historic places across America that are facing a range of threats including insufficient funds, inappropriate development or insensitive public policy. The designation has been a pow-

erful tool for raising awareness and rally-

ing resources to save endangered sites from every region of the country.

The places on the list need not be

famous, but they must be significant within

their own cultural context, illustrate impor-

tant issues in preservation and have a need

for immediate action to stop or reverse

serious threats. All nominations are subject

to an extensive, rigorous vetting process. to

ward-winning celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Mina and Fontainebleau® Miami Beach announced the official opening of Michael Mina 74, an American bistro-lounge located in the lobby of the famed hotel. Michael Mina 74 is the first concept of its kind created exclusively for Fontainebleau by the celebrated chef and delivers a high-energy culinary and social destination that blurs the lines between a restaurant, bar and ultra-lounge.

"We've achieved the perfect balance of delicious food and a high-energy, sophisticated ambiance with Michael Mina 74 at Fontainebleau," said Chef Michael Mina. "Our goal was to create a new concept with great food that effortlessly transitions from restaurant to a lounge atmosphere while maintaining a sense of connectivity," said Mina.

Chef Mina has crafted a sophisticated bistro-style menu with balanced flavors that complement the high-energy rhythm of Miami. Some of his favorite flavors from around the globe are paired with seasonal and regional products. Items such as Moroccan Short Ribs, Jerk Quail with Foie Gras, Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu and Truffle Omelet Souffle are just a few of the many menu offerings. Additionally, the dining experience will be punctuated with signature services such as local shellfish from Fontainebleau's private fishing vessel, BleauFish, as well as Fontainebleau's very own dry-aged steaks.

The conference participants learned that along Florida's Historic Coast, history comes alive in red-brick lanes leading to centuries-old churches, in forts where soldiers still walk the grounds, and on horsedrawn carriage rides through the historic Old St. Augustine. St. Augustine is the perfect place to hold a meeting and have conference participants learn more about this historic city as well as the modern facil-

ities it affords.

The Pre Conference Tour was hosted by Evelyn Vazquez, CDMP, and Director of Leisure Sales for the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau. Participants got to enjoy a trip back to nature along 42 miles of pristine Atlantic beaches and the numerous championship golf courses that make the area ideal for combining their meetings with golf. It was easy for conference participants to get caught up in the area's timeless history and romance. St. Augustine is indeed a different sort of city – a place where history is on every street corner and where the ancient buildings and narrow brick-paved streets create an ambiance that is more like Spain than the familiar feel of downtown America.

As the conference participants experienced, time stops in St. Augustine, the country’s first original Spanish settlement. Here is a place where you can explore the cultures of the Spanish and the Native Americans who first called it their land. It is also a place where you can learn about Colonial living within a historical village and also learn about Africans in Fort Mose, the nation’s first community of
