I
n the last issue of Hispanic Meetings & Travel, I wrote about the trip we were about to take to Washington, DC and Williamsburg. This was the first chance my son Alex would have to visit DC and his first time as a junior groomsman at his cousin's wedding. I am happy to say our trip was beautiful and amazing! We landed in DC, picked up family and car rental then drove straight away to Williamsburg. We had to get Alex to the rehearsal that afternoon so he only got a glimpse of DC but he was excited for the return. The road trip was very beautiful and picturesque. The highway filled with lots of trees and nature which was a delightful change of flat land and farmland that is typical of SE/South Texas. While in Williamsburg we got to do some touristy things. I realized I had never really been to an English colonial city before. My colonial trips have been Spanish in nature - St. Augustine, San Diego, Santa Fe, San Antonio, Goliad. I was pleasantly charmed by the English architecture of Williamsburg and the step back in time it affords. My nephew's wedding was smashing and Alex did a great job as junior groomsman. On Memorial Day we drove to DC and we decided to hit the ground running. We had a few hours to hit as many monuments as possible before having to return the car rental and get to the airport in time for our flight back to Houston. My husband Steven and I are pros at seeing as many things in a city as possible in a short period of time. But this time we had a 14 year old along with us as well as my sister-inlaw and nephew so our pace had to be consid4 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

erate of them. All in all we were able to visit the White House, Capitol building, both Washington and Lincoln Memorials and everything along the way in record time. We walked most of the time with the exception of taking an Uber from the Capitol to the Washington Memorial. At one point my sister-in-law and her son rented some type of electronic scooters and went off on their own pace. Having broken my ankle a few years back I was hesitant to get on a fast paced apparatus that I need to control! Thankfully both Steven and Alex are very patient with my hesitations and we enjoyed our very brief trip to DC and we look forward to a longer visit in the near future. Amigos, I encourage you to give your children the gift of travel. You will make memories that will last a lifetime no matter the length of the trip! ¡Viajen con aventura este verano! Majestic Las Vegas is One Step Closer to Reality Ambitious Resort Development Moving Forward; Set to Break Ground in 2020
M
ajestic Las Vegas, the brainchild of Las Vegas native and uberdeveloper Lorenzo Doumani, is now set to break ground following the project's unanimous approval in May by the Clark County Commissioners, and subsequent approvals earlier this month. The revolutionary $850 million-dollar, 620foot-tall contemporary architectural masterpiece is scheduled to commence construction in May 2020, and is slated for completion in early 2023. The five-star, non-gaming, 720 room, all-suite ultra-luxury branded resort will sit on the over six-acre site formerly occupied by the Clarion Hotel, which Doumani famously imploded in 2015. This unparalleled location is directly across from the site of the new Las Vegas Convention Center opening in 2021, and just two blocks from the famed Las Vegas Strip. In addition to six standalone restaurants from world-renowned chefs, a lushly landscaped pool area with 50 cabanas, and an area for live entertainment, the Majestic Las Vegas will focus on the best in health and wellness. The four-level, 70,000 square foot world-class fitness, nutrition, and med spa facility promises to be the finest of its kind anywhere. Serving as a state-of-the-art medical wellness destination, it will not only offer indulgent body treatments and activities such as yoga and spinning, it will also have such amenities as personal nutritionists and comprehensive executive physicals -- all under one roof. But the true crown jewel of Majestic Las Vegas is the corporate Sky Suites. Situated on
levels 51 to 60, the Sky Suites serve as the perfect corporate home for a tech, entertainment, or sports company. Offered in 1/4 floor, 1/2 floor, or entire floor options with up to 25,000 square feet of fully customizable space, the suites all showcase 16' high ceilings and spectacular panoramic views of the gorgeous Las Vegas skyline. In addition to preferred access to all the amenities Majestic Las Vegas has to offer, Sky Suite owners have at their disposal their own private concierge, an exclusive Owner's Club, and, perhaps best of all, a permanent presence with marquee signage in the entertainment capital of the world. "It is time for Las Vegas to provide a luxury option for those who visit our city who want something that is non-gaming," says developer Lorenzo Doumani. "When one walks into Majestic Las Vegas, you can instantly sense that this is a very special place. And whether you want to relax in the lap of luxury, host a meeting or event in your own corporate space, facilitate an executive retreat, or launch a new product, Majestic Las Vegas offers the ideal marriage of sophistication, luxury, and strategic location." Drawing inspiration from legendary architect Paul Williams' iconic La Concha design which was built by the Doumani family in 1961, the Majestic Las Vegas is a contemporary architectural masterpiece by renowned architect Paul Steelman. The State of Yucatan Ranks in Mexico's Top 10 for Greatest Capacity for Major Events
T
he Siglo XXI Convention Center in Merida, state capital of Yucatan, will be expanded and renovated to the tune of some 220 million Mexican pesos (about U.S. $11.25 million) by the time it hosts the Tourism Tianguis 2020 (TT2020) event next year, said Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, speaking at the iconic business center in the company of the state secretaries of tourism and public works. The 107,600-square-foot convention center will grow to more than 247,500 square feet, not only giving it the ability to host TT2020, the most important tourism showcase in the country, but also placing Merida in the top 10 Mexican cities able to host large events at the national level, a group that includes Cancun, Guadalajara, Puebla, Los Cabos and Mexico City, with which Merida competed to host next year's 45th annual Tianguis. It should be noted that, to be considered as a potential TT2020 host, candidate venues were required by SECTUR, Mexico's federal tourism department, to offer a minimum of 236,800 square feet in exhibition space. The renovation and expansion of the Siglo XXI Convention Center, along with its successful hosting of TT2020, should help bring the facility to the attention of international event planners.
Yucatan's Secretary of Tourism and Development has been promoting the state as a first-level venue for the realization of large-scale events via its "Yucatan Meetings" brand. This attracts more visitors to Yucatan and will trigger greater economic benefits for the tourism sector and several associated economic benefits for all of southeastern Mexico. The 220-million-peso remodeling and expansion of the venue will be carried out in two phases. First, the existing structure and faรงade will be renovated and modified. The second phase, meanwhile, will include the construction of a new exhibition area that will add more than 139,900 square feet of space. Merida is set to host the 17th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in the coming months, with 21 prize winners confirmed to attend. Local authorities expect significant associated economic benefits, thanks to the high number of attendees at an event of such international stature and global media coverage. Likewise, the event should be a benchmark for international tourism into Merida, expanding the possibilities for this "industry without chimneys" to continue growing at the doubledigit rate recorded over the last eight months. Yucatan's Secretary of Tourism recently released the figures for the first four months of
2019. April and May saw the highest number of arrivals at Merida International Airport in more than 50 years of operation, with monthly growth exceeding 16% and 18.25%, respectively, compared to the same periods in 2018. In addition, DATATUR, the agency in charge of verifying and certifying data and statistics issued in more than 117 Mexican destinations, announced that Yucatan registered a 27% increase in arrivals of visitors with overnight stays in April. This represented 100,000 more tourists than in April 2018, for a total of 674,263 visitors. Among other data, it was also announced that Merida enjoys the highest hotel occupancies in Mexico and ranks No. 2 nationwide in terms of the highest number of tourists arriving from 37 cities (not counting neighboring municipalities).

NEW AND RENOVATED INTERNATIONAL
GRAND RESORT BAD RAGAZ ANNOUNCES THE REOPENING OF NEWLY RENOVATED FLAGSHIP, GRAND HOTEL QUELLENHOF
A
fter five months of construction and an investment of CHF 45 million (approximately $45.5 million USD), Grand Resort Bad Ragaz's completely renovated Grand Hotel Quellenhof opened its doors once again. For 150 years, Grand Hotel Quellenhof has served as the flagship of Europe's leading wellbeing and medical health resort. Within Grand Hotel Quellenhof, the resort now houses two new restaurants, Verve by sven and Memories, both designed and conceived by top chef Sven Wassmer. The five-star hotel in Bad Ragaz has been amongst the crown jewels of the Swiss luxury hotel industry for several years. Countless statesmen, movie stars and royal family members have spent the night in one of the hotel's luxurious suites. CEO Patrick Vogler and Marco R. Zanolari, General Manager of the Grand Hotels, are now leading the grand dame into a new era. With the completion of the renovation, they have taken an important step towards realizing their vision of becoming the number one grand hotel 22 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
in Europe. "We had the vision of bringing our hotel into a new era of luxury hospitality, and we have succeeded," said Vogler. Famed Swiss interior designer Claudio Carbone is responsible for the redesign of the Grand Hotel Quellenhof. The story of Bad Ragaz began with the discovery of the 36.5-degree thermal water in the Tamina gorge 777 years ago, and the new design concept is centered around both the hotel's history and its thermal water. In order to clearly depict the hotel's connection to the thermal water, a total of three new thermal water fountains were installed throughout the resort during the renovation. These fountains feature a continuous flow of fresh thermal drinking water for guests to consume. The fountains are far from the only new additions, all the furniture, curtains and light fixtures inside the Quellenhof were also redesigned. "The extensive planning and preparation work took around two years," said Vogler. "We want to offer our guests a place of refuge that combines luxury and well-being in a hotel that also satisfies the demands of
today," said Zanolari. "We were able to create a perfect harmony between the history of the hotel and its modern, stylish interior. The hotel was completely booked in the first few days after reopening, and guests were also particularly enthusiastic about the new restaurants." New Top Suite As part of the comprehensive renovations, the Grand Hotel Quellenhof has added another top suite for its guests - the King Suite. Now, the entire resort boasts a total of five top suites. Previously, guests could choose from the Royal Suite (Grand Hotel Quellenhof), the Penthouse Suite and the Presidential Suite (both in the Spa Suites Tower), and the Imperial Suite (Palais) - four very different offerings. With the newly designed King Suite, the Grand Hotel has secured its place amongst the best Swiss luxury hotels for many years to come. The goal of the renovations was to preserve the history of the Grand Hotel Quellenhof and allow continued growth with further developments in the future.
NEW AND RENOVATED INTERNATIONAL classic tableware is adopted as an interior design element. Breakfast will play a key role at the new restaurant. "With a view to health and sustainability, we are consciously moving away from the traditional breakfast buffet and offering breakfast options with fixed items instead," said Wassmer. verve by sven is also unlike any other restaurant in terms of its architecture, as the hotel bar is an integral aspect of the restaurant and is harmoniously integrated into the space. Situated at the center of the restaurant, the bar is finally accorded the status it deserves. "We want the spaces on the ground floor of the Grand Hotel Quellenhof to act as the heart of the hotel," said Zanolari. The charming glass wine cellar and elegant reception desk play an important role in conveying this feeling. The walk-in wine cellar, the domain of Wine Director Amanda WassmerBulgin, can hold around 4,000 bottles and is intended to one day be a destination for wine lovers from near and far. Another meeting point that will quickly become a popular fixture is the fireplace in the middle of the hotel lobby. The space is illuminated by hundreds of Swarovski crystals that previously adorned the chandeliers in the Restaurant Bel-Air. Comfortable yet stylish lounge chairs are placed throughout the lobby.
Shedding Light on Design Details When it came to designing the interiors of all the rooms in the hotel, architect Claudio Carbone made sure to pay special attention to the lighting. He used unusual light fixtures, all of which were inspired by nature, to create an entirely new atmosphere in the Grand Hotel Quellenhof. The highlight of the lighting concept is the 53-foot chandelier in the lobby that presides over all four floors. With 2,500 clear and blue spheres of various sizes, it calls to mind the image of a flowing waterfall, while the reflection of light breathes life into the artful elements that were created by Czech glassblowers. Design Features of Memories and verve by sven In addition to the comprehensive renovation work, the restaurants at the Grand Hotel Quellenhof have also undergone a complete trans-
formation. Chef Sven Wassmer has steered the Quellenhof in a new culinary direction with two brand new restaurants. The 32-year-old culinary director is responsible for both his signature restaurant Memories and the restaurant verve by sven. Where Memories was designed to celebrate contemporary Alpine cuisine at the pinnacle of fine dining, verve by sven focuses on health and lifestyle. The name itself derived from the French word verve, meaning both "energy" and "zest," provides an insight into what this restaurant offers seven days a week. This is also reflected in the interior design of the restaurant, which is characterized by natural materials and a subtle color palette. Two highlights of the interior are the "living wall," a wall that is entirely covered in live plants that provide decoration and improves the air quality in the room, and the eye-catching seats, which are positioned under large cloches. At verve by sven, an oversized version of this
150 Years of Significant History Bernhard Simon, the courageous pioneer of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, made Swiss tourism history when he purchased the Bad Ragaz estate in 1868. Construction of the Grand Hotel Quellenhof began just a few days later, and the hotel welcomed its first guests on July 10, 1869. The estate expanded steadily and received illustrious guests from around the globe who were active in the worlds of politics, business and high society. After several turbulent years, the Schmidheiny family of entrepreneurs became involved with Bad Ragaz on January 3, 1928. Jacob Schmidheiny was named the President of the Board of Directors of Bad- und Kuranstalten RagazPfäfers. Great-uncle of current Member of the Board of Directors Dr. h.c. Thomas Schmidheiny, Jacob Schmidheiny shaped the destiny of the hotel for a total of 15 years. He was succeeded by his nephew, Dr. h.c. Max Schmidheiny, and in turn by his son, Dr. h.c. Thomas Schmidheiny, who remains actively involved in the hotel to this day. His daughter, Lisa Schmidheiny, represents the fourth generation of the Schmidheiny family to have a close relationship with the company.
