HOPEFUL FOR BETTER TRAVELING DAYS What a year 2017 has been for the meetings and travel industry! It has had to endure travel bans, raging fires, immense floods, and devastating hurricanes. And, our friends to the south of us have seen their beautiful country devastated by earthMaría de la Luz González quakes this year. The Publisher and Editor events of this year have made me reflect on the impact they have on the industry. I have personally seen the painstaking recovery of my hometown Houston after hurricane Harvey to piece itself back together. Even months after Harvey, many parts of the city have yet to recover. I often think about the other parts of Texas devastated by Harvey as well as other disaster stricken locations such as Florida, California, Mexico, the Caribbean and especially Puerto Rico. How is their travel and meetings industry been affected? Have they recovered enough to attract visitors and meetings again? Luckily we can find answers to these questions very easily by checking in with CVBs and local governments through their websites and social media. I would like to share highlights from the latest Puerto Rico Update Post Hurricane María Statement press release from Milton Segarra, President & CEO of Meet Puerto Rico dated 11.22.17: • U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and the National Park Service (NPS) announced yesterday that the NPS has resumed normal operations and public tours at the visitor center and Castillo San Cristóbal area of San Juan National Historic Site. 4 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

The campaign represents the next chapter in Mexico's global tourism positioning and promotion and focuses on the vibrant, multi-faceted experiences that keep visitors coming back to Mexico and its hundreds of destinations, time and again. The "A World of Its Own" positioning highlights the sheer scale and diversity of Mexico's tourism offering and comes at a time when Mexico has climbed from the 15th (2012) to the 8th most visited country in the world (source: UNWTO), outpacing the global industry average in growth, by several times. "This new campaign is an invitation to immerse yourself in everything that is Mexico," stated Hector Flores Santana, Mexico Tourism Board's CEO. "We feel the name says it all: Mexico is truly 'A World of Its Own'. We constantly hear visitors tell us that Mexico is unlike anything they have experienced. They have shared their marvel that in just one day they can relax at one of the world's top beaches, stroll through colorful markets, hear the Maya language still spoken, visit a crystal blue water 18 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

cenote hidden in the jungle and, finally, savor a mix of modern and ancient flavors at dinner. Throughout their journey they are greeted with the warm smiles of the Mexican people while enjoying the quality service of Mexico's worldfamous hospitality. This new campaign seeks to capture this positive overwhelming feeling of sensations and discovery." By telling rich stories about these diverse, vibrant experiences Mexico offers across its destinations to a wide variety of travelers, the campaign will build upon Mexico's recognized positioning as a mega-destination. It is a country that beckons travelers again and again, for even longer visits each time, in order to fully explore the richness and diversity found everywhere. In this sense, the campaign highlights that the question for travelers is not 'should you visit Mexico?' but instead 'how far will you go?' "A World of Its Own" will also highlight the colorful, magical and even surreal aspect of Mexico which has attracted explorers, artists and philosophers for thousands of years. This is what Salvador DalĂ, the acclaimed and eccentric Spanish artist, sarcastically claimed about Mexico: "There is no way I am going

back to Mexico, I can't stand to be in a country that is more surreal than my paintings." Nothing captures this surrealism more so than the DĂa de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. Travelers can be immersed in this beautiful, joyous tradition that has evolved over thousands of years where Mexican families and friends honor and remember their departed loved ones with altars, food, flowers, colorful decorations, and public and private festivities that symbolize how the dead still dance and celebrate among us. The multi-faceted global marketing campaign will begin to roll out immediately, with its first phases focused on the visitmexico.com website refresh, digital and social media programs, and public relations efforts. Advertising, promotions and events in partnership with the tourism industry, and Mexico's many destinations, will begin rolling out across global markets in October. A new digital platform will launch, allowing for interaction with the "World Of its Own" video, with 360-degree views of Mexico experiences and a Mexico bucket-list building tool for consumers. The campaign content and messages have also been designed to be customized by market, consumer segments and according to Mexico's tourism products including sun and beach, romance, adventure and nature, medical and wellness, LGBT, cruises, culture, high-impact events, luxury, sustainability and gastronomy. The Mexico Tourism Board's Chief Marketing Officer, Emmanuel Rey, added, "It's time for Mexico to connect with travelers on a more personal level, now more than ever. 'A World of Its Own' will both engage consumers by sharing the breadth of experiences Mexico has to offer and, more importantly, challenge travelers to live life to the fullest, awaken their drive to imagine and ensure travel is an important part of how they discover the world and themselves." San Antonio Designated 'Creative City of Gastronomy' by UNESCO

R

ecently the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated San Antonio a Creative City of Gastronomy, making the city part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). San Antonio is only the second city in the U.S. to earn this distinction, and the first in Texas. San Antonio's culinary heritage is significant for its confluence of many world cultures such as Mexican, Spanish, German and French, as well its geology and geography. Today the city's culinary scene has since blossomed in its richness, with chefs honoring and celebrating its culinary heritage through preservation and innovation. Beyond the famous River Walk and historic walls of The Alamo, San Antonio's culinary scene has historically been firmed planted in blends of TexMex, but has now progressed to "Tex-Next." As a gateway to Latin America, San Antonio is uniquely positioned to showcase and celebrate the richness of this cuisine. The third campus of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is located in San Antonio. Dedicated to the foundations of culinary instruction as well as specializations in Latin cuisine, this campus takes advantage of San Antonio's cultural influences and access to indigenous ingredients. The CIA campus is located at Pearl, a 22-acre indie food haven in a repur-

posed German brewery built in 1883. With 18 concepts, including a robust weekend farmers market and the city's first food hall, Pearl is a destination onto itself. UNESCO's Creative Cities Network promotes international cooperation and encourages the sharing of experiences and resources to promote local development through culture and creativity. The local food movement and enthusiasm for sustainable programs spurred the dramatic evolution of San Antonio's culinary landscape and inspired a comprehensive effort to apply for the UNESCO designation in June 2017. San Antonio's officials on the designation: "This designation is a great honor for San Antonio," San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "As a Creative City of Gastronomy, we will seek to strengthen and expand international connections, share our culinary arts and heritage globally and introduce San Antonio as an international culinary destination. We look forward to actively participating in the Network, which is aligned with our dedication to sustainable and equitable urban planning." "Travelers are increasingly seeking a destination with a robust culinary scene as a way to really get to know the heart of a city," said Casandra Matej, President & CEO of Visit San Antonio. "The UNESCO Creative City of Gas-

tronomy designation confirms what millions of visitors have known all along-San Antonio's cuisine is truly unique and authentic to our region." "One of San Antonio's most important identities comes from its deep culinary traditions which began with the innovative agricultural techniques of the Native American peoples who lived here for thousands of years," said Richard Perez, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. "These have evolved and mixed with many others to create a unique and burgeoning food scene." "The international bonds San Antonio solidified as a World Heritage Site are invaluable to us as a community and growing city," District 3 City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran said. "Becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy will serve as another catalyst that encourages equity and more opportunity to protect and promote our local cultural assets at home and on the global stage." Viagran's district is home to four of the five San Antonio Missions that comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About Visit San Antonio: Visit San Antonio is a 501(c)6, and serves as the sales and marketing arm of San Antonio as a leading leisure and meetings destination. San Antonio welcomes 20.9 million overnight leisure visitors annually. Hospitality is one of the top five industries in the city, contributing $13.6 billion into the local economy and employing more than 130,000.
