I
t’s that time of year where we nationally recognize the Hispanic community and its contributions to the fabric of America. Cities throughout the USA are abound with Fiestas Patrias celebrating the independence of our southern neighbors such as Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Chile as well as celebrating the heritage that many of us Americans hold dear to our hearts. In this issue we highlight the festivities being held in New York City on page 6. In a trying year where we have seen many of our brothers and sisters torn apart from their children at the border, it is heartening to know that many places in the USA still recognize our Hispanic culture as a rich and contributing factor to this country. The travel and meetings industry also makes an effort to recognize our community throughout the year. Many have stepped up to give back to our people and organizations that provide such an economic boost to this country, for example: • Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Award Complimentary Airfare to 150 College Students Nationwide Airline donates more than 400 roundtrips to help Hispanic students stay connected with their loved ones as they pursue their educational dreams • Northwestern Mutual Sponsors 2018 Prospanica Conference & Career Expo: ¡IMPACTO! Rising & Thriving being held Sept. 12– 14 in Milwaukee 4 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
ABOUND IN THE USA • Friends of the American Latino Museum (FRIENDS), the only non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the creation of a National American Latino Museum announced earlier this year the creation of the Chairman's Advisory Council (CAC) with its initial cohort. The CAC will help key individuals involved with FRIENDS remain informed and engaged as they assist the organization in raising visibility and public support for the creation of a Smithsonian National American Latino museum, obtain Congressional backing for legislation and seek financial commitments with both donations and pledges. As you can see, despite the political climate towards our community, many wonderful opportunities are being forged by our people and those who support us. So, as we step out onto festivities in our own communities this month, eating the flavorful foods many of us grew up with and listening to the music that moves our feet and our souls let us not forget about those poor families on the border who do not know what the future will bring. Their biggest crime is to wish for the American dream and try to make it a reality despite the cost being so high. We Hispanic Americans live that dream everyday and are blessed to have it be our reality. If we are indeed the greatest nation in the world, isn’t there enough to go around? ¡Hay que seguir soñando el sueño Americano!

PROGRESSIVE, DIVERSE, AND CONVENTION READY
A WARM, INVITING, AND PROGRESSIVE CITY
P
hiladelphia is a warm, inviting, and progressive city. These characteristics are on display every day - embodied by the city's hardworking small business owners and community leaders who carry with them important values of inclusiveness and integrity. It's an impression Philadelphia leaves on its visitors, and an authentic feeling meeting planners and group travel leaders appreciate. In Philadelphia, diversity is part of our DNA. Residents from 20 different Latin American and Caribbean cultural heritages, including an ever-growing Hispanic population, call Philadelphia home. The city has one of the country's fastest-growing millennial populations, influencing the development of new shopping and entertainment areas. 14 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
PHL Diversity, a business development division of the PHLCVB, is dedicated to ensuring meetings and conventions can connect to diverse local suppliers and forge long-lasting community relationships. PHL Diversity activates local resources bringing meeting planners closer to diverse vendors, potential sponsors, speakers, and other "value-adds" that create a fulfilling meeting experience. The history, rich arts and music scene, and restaurants, have propelled Philadelphia to the top of meeting planners' lists, including the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Hispanic National Bar Association, who both brought their annual meetings to the city in 2018. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell two of the country's most iconic symbols of
freedom - are poignant reminders of the causes we champion and the reasons we congregate. Both attractions are within walking distance to the centrally-located Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCC), the largest free-standing facility in the nation. With 1 million square feet of saleable space and the largest contiguous exhibit space in the Northeast - 528,000 square feet - the PCC is versatile and spacious enough to tend to every possible request. Philadelphia's favorite pastime is the food we consume, and the pride we take in providing a satisfying meal for others. Yes, there are cheesesteaks for your attendees to devour, but our palette is all grown up. Recognized nationally by Travel & Leisure as the "best food city on the East Coast right now", the hype is backed by some serious accolades. In 2018, James Beard put a stamp of approval on four local culinary masters who have been nominated or recognized for their innovative tastes. The world famous Reading Terminal Market and the country's third largest Chinatown are examples of Philadelphia's wide-ranging geographical influence, so an appetite is essential. From the moment you choose Philadelphia, you'll have access to a network of hospitality professionals, government officials, academic thought leaders, and constituents with a focus on diversity and inclusion. The people of Philadelphia have impacted the culture, making it the perfect destination for your next meeting or convention.
