FORGING AHEAD IN 2019
I
n this issue, we are combining Winter and Spring - they complement each other so beautifully. The destinations featured on pages 13 & 14 show us how not to be intimidated by the cold weather and we should go ahead and hold a meeting or convention in the winter time. The Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado has now opened its doors as the largest convention center in the state. This majestic resort debuts under the Marriott International brand and is sure to delight meeting attendees for years to come. Just looking at the resort's exterior makes us want to grab our skies and head to Colorado! Another great winter destination is Milwaukee - we list all the great reasons to meet in this Mid-Western city during the winter months. This year one of the biggest Hispanic conventions is actually being held in Milwaukee. The 90th LULAC National Convention & Expo will take place at the Wisconsin Convention Center from July 10 to 13. We are certain the 20,000 participants of the event will be delighted by Milwaukee. The other 2 largest Hispanic conferences of the year will both take place in California. 4 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
UnidosUS, formerly National Council of La Raza, will host its annual conference from August 3 to 6 at the San Diego Convention Center. The US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Convention will take place September 29 to October 1 at JW Marriott LA LIVE in Los Angeles. This issue also features East Coast Meeting Destinations. On the cover we have the grand opening of the Conrad Washington in Washington, DC. This Hilton luxury brand hotel adds an architecturally striking silhouette to the nation's capital. HM&T will be in DC in May and we hope to see this new Conrad hotel up close. We're also featuring Philadelphia's rich, cultural diversity. In 2018 this city hosted both the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Convention and the Hispanic National Bar Association's Annual Convention making Philadelphia a new favorite destination for the Hispanic meetings market. This year has begun with a dynamic atmosphere about it. We have a legitimate Hispanic candidate for the presidency of the United Stated in former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former Mayor of San Antonio Julián Castro. We have a culturally diverse and emboldened House of Representatives with a Latina leading the charge in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. With such prominent Hispanic figures making waves in national politics you cannot help but feel hopeful for this new year ahead. As for Hispanic Meetings & Travel Magazine, we too are forging ahead in a dynamic way. Last year we celebrated the magazine's 20th Anniversary and this year we have moved every issue release one month later. After 20 years it's time to shake it up a bit!

LUNGARNO COLLECTION WELCOMES A NEW HOTEL ADDITION: PORTRAIT MILANO
M
ilan has been chosen as the location for the sixth hotel and the newest member of the Portrait brand from the Florencebased group owned by the Ferragamo family. Lungarno Collection is delighted to announce a new addition to its hotel portfolio, which currently includes four hotels in Florence and one in Rome. Portrait Milano, opening in Fall 2020, will be the third hotel in the Portrait brand and the sixth hotel of Lungarno Collection. Over the past decade, these five hotels have achieved excellence in global luxury hospitality and are now ranked alongside some of the largest international names in the business. Having achieved its position in the hospitality sector, the Ferragamo-family owned hotel group is thrilled to make its debut in Milan in an exceptional historical building unfamiliar to all but a few of the city's residents. Formally known as Archiepiscopal Seminary at 11, Corso Venezia, with additional access from 10, Via Sant'Andrea, the building is Europe's oldest seminary, second in the world, built in 1564 in a strategic central position. This monumental building boasts an impressive baroque entrance designed in 1652 by Francesco Maria
Richini, which opens onto an imposing piazza framed by a double colonnaded loggia. One of the Portrait Milano's greatest attributes is that it will welcome hotel guests, visitors and residents alike, modifying pedestrian access through the fashion district by joining Corso Venezia to Via Sant'Andrea. "We are thrilled to be involved in a project which is not only a great challenge in terms of hospitality, but also a great responsibility towards Milan. It is an honor to return the building to the city in all its glory, strengthening its close historical ties," explains Valeriano Antonioli, CEO of Lungarno Collection. A crucial player in this sense was architect Michele De Lucchi's Studio MDL practice, which Lungarno Collection commissioned for the restoration work; a project requiring extensive insight and experience. "Although it closed at the beginning of the 21st Century, the seminary in Corso Venezia is an architectural jewel in our urban fabric which very few people know about. It is set to become a major destination for any visit to Milan not least for the architectural value of the colonnade and the Renaissance perfection of its proportions. In this magnificent architectural setting, the art
of the past will blend with contemporary lifestyles," explains Michele De Lucchi, whose ideas for the project have been clear from the outset. Instead of dominating a historic building, a new project must bring out the hidden beauty within its ancient walls. Many buildings have been transformed and reconfigured over the years, meaning that the unifying thread of history is often broken; it must be sewn back together to restore their stylistic consistency and, more importantly, the authenticity of everything their architecture has witnessed down the centuries leading up to contemporary times. Leonardo Ferragamo, President of Lungarno Collection, adds: "Portrait Milano gives us the chance to bring our own special brand of hospitality to an exceptional location and a city that continues to emerge on the global stage. We will be able to introduce our guests to Milan's incredible heritage, taking pathways which, many outstanding men have followed, investing all their energies to help make the city what it is today."

PHILADELPHIA
P
hiladelphia is a warm, inviting, and progressive city. These characteristics are on display every day embodied by the city's hardworking small business owners and community leaders who carry with them important values of inclusiveness and integrity. It's an impression Philadelphia leaves on its visitors, and an authentic feeling meeting planners and group travel leaders appreciate. In Philadelphia, diversity is part of our DNA. Residents from 20 different Latin American and Caribbean cultural heritages, including an ever-growing Hispanic population, call Philadelphia home. The city has one of the country's fastest-growing millennial populations, influencing the development of new shopping and entertainment areas. PHL Diversity, a business development division of the PHLCVB, is dedicated to ensuring meetings and conventions can connect to diverse local suppliers and forge long-lasting community relationships. PHL Diversity activates local resources 10 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
bringing meeting planners closer to diverse vendors, potential sponsors, speakers, and other "value-adds" that create a fulfilling meeting experience. The history, rich arts and music scene, and restaurants, have propelled Philadelphia to the top of meeting planners' lists, including the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Hispanic National Bar Association, who both brought their annual meetings to the city in 2018. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell two of the country's most iconic symbols of freedom - are poignant reminders of the causes we champion and the reasons we congregate. Both attractions are within walking distance to the centrally-located Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCC), the largest free-standing facility in the nation. With 1 million square feet of saleable space and the largest contiguous exhibit space in the Northeast - 528,000 square feet - the PCC is versatile and spacious enough to tend to every possible request. Philadelphia's favorite pastime is the food we consume, and the pride we take in provid-
ing a satisfying meal for others. Yes, there are cheesesteaks for your attendees to devour, but our palette is all grown up. Recognized nationally by Travel & Leisure as the "best food city on the East Coast right now", the hype is backed by some serious accolades. In 2018, James Beard put a stamp of approval on four local culinary masters who have been nominated or recognized for their innovative tastes. The world famous Reading Terminal Market and the country's third largest Chinatown are examples of Philadelphia's wide-ranging geographical influence, so an appetite is essential. From the moment you choose Philadelphia, you'll have access to a network of hospitality professionals, government officials, academic thought leaders, and constituents with a focus on diversity and inclusion. The people of Philadelphia have impacted the culture, making it the perfect destination for your next meeting or convention.

LOEWS CHICAGO O'HARE HOTEL SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS FOLLOWING MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR RENOVATION
Revamped meeting and event spaces, as well as newly designed guestrooms, position hotel as leading meeting and event destination in Midwest
L
oews Chicago O'Hare Hotel (5300 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL) has announced the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation including newly revamped meeting and event spaces as well as newly designed guestrooms. Chicago's history and texture - its industry, parks, and art, influence the elegant and dynamic design. Conveniently located minutes from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and a short train ride from all that Chicago has to offer, Loews Chicago O'Hare Hotel is positioned to be the top choice for meetings in the Midwest. With top service, split ballrooms on both sides of the property, innovative food and beverage offerings, creative meeting breaks, and more, Loews Chicago O'Hare Hotel is the ideal meetings destination. "We are excited to be able to offer an even more elevated experience near O'Hare International Airport," said Hans Ritten, general manager, Loews Chicago O'Hare Hotel. "The sophisticated new design created by Simeone Deary Design Group brings elements of Chicago into the hotel at every corner." The sophisticated vision was created by interior design firm Simeone Deary Design Group, who balanced integration of nature with structure and moments of restful pause throughout the design. Inspired by "a walk in the park," the design reflects architectural inspiration from iconic structures in Chicago 12 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
such as Pritzker Pavilion, Cloud Gate, and Crown Fountains, as well as elements of nature through texture and color reflecting the green space found throughout the city that is a juxtaposition against the built environment. As guests enter the hotel, a floor to ceiling green moss wall provides a sense of nature reflecting Chicago's many green spaces. The adjacent broken rock and concrete that hover effortlessly before a diaphanous image of Daniel Burnham's historic plan for the City and Grant Park, also known as Chicago's Front Yard, reflects the city's history and industry. The hotel boasts 53,000 square feet of sophisticated meeting and event space, including four grand ballrooms that are split on both sides of the property, 34 meeting rooms, and nine private boardrooms. The on-site restaurant, The Ashburn, also offers private dining rooms and event spaces. Guests can wander the gallery-like halls of Loews Chicago O'Hare Hotel and be inspired by the artwork, which flank the walls of the hallways leading to the meeting and event spaces much like the halls of an art museum. The artwork is a collection of rotating pieces of contemporary works including photos, paintings, and mixed media in addition to a number of permanent pieces. The hotel's 556 guestrooms including 60 spacious suites provide quiet moments reflecting trellised areas, lawns, and other quiet
escapes found within a bustling city. Warm wood tones, garden greens, and cool concretes invoke a restful pause in an inviting space. The Presidential Suite uses blush tones from seasonal blooms as inspiration for the furnishings and palettes, while the other suite celebrates the greenery in Grant Park as seen from a highrise apartment. Inspired by Chicago's first airport, Ashburn Flying Field, The Ashburn is an innovative restaurant that celebrates the heritage and tradition of aviation. The Ashburn's offerings include unique twists and modern interpretations of classic American cuisine in a contemporary and relaxed gastropub setting. The hotel has a Fitness Center that is open 24 hours a day and offers complimentary shuttle service between O'Hare International Airport and the hotel. New Meeting Destinations & Property Expansions
Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center Officially Opens Colorado's Largest Combined Resort and Convention Center Makes Its 85-acre Grand Debut
T
he sheer scale and awe-inspiring majesty of the Rocky Mountains has captivated visitors to Colorado for hundreds of years. But there's never been a resort to match the epic grandeur of the Rockies, until now. Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center has officially opened its doors in Aurora as the largest combined resort and convention center in Colorado. Just 10 minutes from Denver International Airport, the resort is the fifth Gaylord HotelsÂŽ property and one of the largest resorts in the world to debut under the Marriott International brand this year. The Denver area has seen unprecedented growth in the past decade, but Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center is the definition of a game-changer for the region, delivering 1,501 rooms, 485,000 square feet of convention center space and an extensive indoor/outdoor water park on a sprawling 85-acre site. For major convention planners and travelers (both business and leisure), Gaylord Rockies re-defines and re-imagines what a large-scale resort can be. "Adding a western group destination of this magnitude to Marriott International's portfolio allows our organization to leverage existing large conference business demand into the property. This spectacular newbuild will also create new demand in the market with meetings customers who have never considered Colorado for their events," said Mike Stengel, Senior Vice President of Gaylord Hotels at Marriott International.
The Perfect Location
Overlooking the city of Denver skyline, framed by the Rocky Mountains, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center is the first true tourism product in Aurora, Colorado - a rapidly growing community directly east of Denver. As one of the closest combined resort and convention centers to Denver International Airport - the fifth busiest airport in the nation - the property is perfectly positioned as a gateway destination to the Rocky Mountains with quick access to the Mile High City.
A Hyper-Local Colorado Approach Setting it apart from other similarly-sized resorts, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center is built from the ground up to authentically capture a local sense of place. The resort's interior design and dĂŠcor is modeled after aspects iconic to Colorado - everything from cascading waterfalls over boulders and local nature artwork to native landscaping and even elevators designed to look like old mine shafts, paying tribute to Colorado's gold rush history. The Centennial State feel is carried over into guest rooms, with aspen tree-inspired carpets, lumberjack plaid print pillows and hiking and camping maps in the closets. In the Convention Center, charming Colorado details are sprinkled throughout including elements that represent ski tracks, snow drifts and snowflakes. Local food and beverage partnerships are also an integral part of the resort including a collaboration with Dry Dock Brewing Co., an awardwinning brewery in Aurora, which offers two exclusive resort branded brews.
The Ultimate Colorado Meetings & Events Venue As Colorado's premier meeting and convention destination, Gaylord Rockies' "everything in one place" approach ensures groups maximize their time together, while unrivaled meetings expertise and exemplary service standards guarantees a successful, stress-free experience. Planners can bring their conference, convention or meeting to life in one of the property's new indoor or outdoor event rooms, including the 20,000square-foot Aurora Patio and the 175,000-square-foot Exhibit Hall. MILWAUKEE REMAINS OPEN FOR BUSINESS DURING COLDER MONTHS
TEMPERATURES ARE NOT THE ONLY COOL THING ABOUT WINTERS IN MILWAUKEE
O
ne of the common inquiries about Milwaukee concerns the winter temperatures. But VISIT Milwaukee has found that meeting planners and attendees can experience a great Milwaukee meeting year-round. In fact, tourism data from the State of Wisconsin shows a nearly even distribution of Milwaukee's annual 23 million visitors across the seasons:
Seasonal breakdown of visits to Milwaukee Fall Summer Winter Spring
28% 27% 24% 21%
Meeting planners, especially, have a wealth of wintertime options and activities that will make an event in Milwaukee cool for a completely different reason.
Milwaukee's Skywalk System
During winter, Milwaukee is an average 28 degrees and receives an average 45 inches of snow annually. When temperatures drop or snow falls, Milwaukee's skywalk system can take attendees to many downtown amenities and attractions. The 1.75-mile skywalk system includes the convention center and three downtown Milwaukee hotels, each providing exceptional amenities. 14 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
In the convention center, meeting-goers have been enjoying the new CONFLUX space - featuring high-end vending for breakfast and lunch, solo and group gathering spaces, charging stations, digital games, and even a LEGO room to unwind between sessions. The connecting hotels offer additional meeting rooms as well as dining. At Hilton Milwaukee is a coffee shop as well as the Miller Time Pub & Grill for authentic Milwaukee brews and burgers. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night cocktails and sandwiches are waiting for attendees at the Hyatt Regency's Bistro 333. Over at SpringHill Suites Milwaukee Downtown, some of the city's finest barbecue is available for lunch or dinner, along with craft beers, bourbons, and whiskeys for happy hour at DOC's Commerce Smokehouse.
Winter Entertainment
Though stepping foot in the cold is not required, it is encouraged given Milwaukee's entertainment scene. Winter sporting has been a fun activity for groups looking for unique team-building and get-togethers. Ice skating is popular for groups whether indoor skating at our city's official U.S. Olympic training facility or outdoor skating at a rink bigger than Rockefeller Center's in New York. VISIT Milwaukee staff can help plan outdoor excursions for skiing, sledding, and snowboarding in winter just as easily as they plan kayaking and golfing in summer. For those who prefer to be spectators, Fiserv
Forum is the new home of the Milwaukee Bucks NBA team. Meeting planners can treat attendees to box seats and court view lounges. The UWMilwaukee Panther Arena is another sporting events option, and also within a short walking distance from the convention center and hotels. More artistic groups love the varied theater and musical groups that boast national productions and local artistic creations. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's CineConcerts series has the orchestra performing film scores live as movies play for audiences. The Milwaukee Ballet's dramatic performances and stellar choreography has been a city staple for nearly 50 years. Plus, the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts regularly hosts Broadway and off-Broadway hits in Milwaukee. Milwaukee is known as the Brew City, and brewery tours are in fashion every season. Sites like Milwaukee Brewing Company, Lakefront Brewery, and Good City Brewing often double as event spaces and offer group tours to see how the brews are made. Additionally, our local restaurants and bars have embraced winter in fun new ways. CafĂŠ Benelux recently debuted its Lux Domes, which feature heated, igloo-like dining areas for groups. MKE Ice Bars offer another nice way to enjoy the city's cuisine and cocktails surrounded by ice sculptures and structures.
Holidays in MKE
A key part of winter is, of course, the holiday season. Meeting planners who schedule an event in Milwaukee near the end of the year soon find a plethora of ways to get into the spirit. A new city tradition is Christkindlmarket Milwaukee, a traditional German holiday market that takes over the plaza in front of our Fiserv Forum arena. The Holiday Lights Festival brings the city and its visitors together for lights displays at four parks as well as activities like the Jingle Bus for group tours. Your attendees could be special guests at these holiday events or at the city's cultural celebrations like Hmong New Year, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and parrandas caroling. With so many options in Milwaukee, the weather should not be a factor in deciding on hosting a conference in Milwaukee. For more information call 1-800-554-1448 or visit www.visitmilwaukee.org

With added booking flexibility, the new space allows the resort to grow with the needs of its existing clients and attract new business, including Associations. "With our expansion, upgraded amenities, new outdoor space and user-friendly connectivity packages, we provide our convention customers an enhanced meeting experience with more options," said Ernest Stovall, vice president of Sales for MGM Grand. "I'm proud that many of our clients consider MGM Grand their home in Las Vegas, and I look forward to sharing our new look and feel." The expansion also introduces creative new options to accommodate the evolving need for collaborative and productive work spaces. Stay Well Meetings - the industry's first-ever well-
ness meetings experience which launched at MGM Grand in 2014 - expanded its footprint by 22,000 square feet, for a total of over 40,000 square feet - and encompasses the Conference Center's entire second floor of both the new and existing space. Stay Well Meetings feature amenities and programs that stimulate the healthy, productive and creative work environments that many clients are actively seeking. With floor-to-ceiling windows on all three levels, attendees enjoy the natural light and stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip while mingling and networking in the pre-function spaces. In between meetings, guests can catch up on emails on the third floor's amphitheaterstyle seating or relax and simply take in the views of the city. The area is designed as a casual workspace or can be used for group presentations for up to 25 people. Integrated power and data in the seating area and adjacent area, unistruts for hanging signage and other branding options support a variety of activations. Additional spaces within the expansion include the 10,000-square-foot outdoor Marquee Courtyard available for private events, the 47,000-square-foot Chairman's Ballroom, 30,000-square-foot Boulevard Ballroom and two non-traditional boardrooms. The largest
two ballrooms feature acoustically treated operable walls that can divide the spaces into 16 breakout rooms. Michael Dominguez, senior vice president and chief sales officer for MGM Resorts, said, "The interest in Las Vegas and specifically MGM Resorts destinations has been tremendous. Because we deliver extraordinary events that achieve client goals, we have been able to continue cultivating loyal relationships with companies that want to grow with us. The increased demand for space compelled us to develop more robust and creative meeting options throughout our portfolio, including the new offerings at MGM Grand." Las Vegas is the meetings capital of the world and these expansion efforts and commitment to this industry strengthen that position. Park MGM is the first and only IACC-certified member on the Las Vegas Strip with first-tomarket venues: Madison Meeting Center and Ideation Studio.

Grand Velas Los Cabos' Design: Grand Velas Los Cabos is an oasis in the middle of the contrasting landscapes of the area made up of beautiful beaches, boulders, desert and deep blue sea. Ricardo Elias used dividing walls between the balconies of each of the 304 rooms to give a unique character and interesting rhythm to the façade of the hotel. Due to the curvature of the building, these dividing walls of trapezoidal shape mimic white sails. The purpose of the architectural element is to connect the building with its main neighbor, the sea. Another architectural standout is the curved, half-moon design of the hotel. It catches eyes with an iconic grand entrance that's open air, three stories high and over 300 ft.
above sea level. Upon exiting their transportation, guests are immediately greeted with a sparkling ocean view, framed by over scale Velas walls. These great walls were designed to not only give an impressive scale to the space but also block the wind currents and provide shade to make the lobby a comfortable location for guests. The covering of the walls is of wood-textured ceramics in colors of clear and dark sand, and their imposing design of stripes evoke on one side the sea horizon and the other, the rocky character of the destination. Elías was recently recognized by Mexico Design magazine which annually awards a prize to the best of Mexico's architecture for his 40 year career.
International Destinations on the dialogue between the European artistic movement and it´s development in Mexico is evident throughout due to the blending of two cultures that were an important part of Frida´s essence and individuality. Niz + Chauvet Architects brought in the sea to Azul restaurant. A nautical design blends seamlessly into the restaurant's oceanfront location. Variations of blue play off the colors of the ocean contrasting with the natural fishing rope is crafted into standout ceiling pieces. Geometric tiles adorn expansive serving stations.
Piaf Restaurant, the resort's fine-dining French option, was designed by Larissa Garcia of Cassal Diseño Designs. The design inspiration for Piaf was a modern twist on France in the 1940's to 60's, when Edith Piaf was at the top of her artistic career. Rich designs, details and dramatic spaces were achieved with both natural and authentic elements. Damasco marble, green Onyx, petrified marble and high-gloss wood were all specially treated to create high-contrast light effects full of shadows and highlights. Ernesto Vela of Ernesto Vela Architects led the contemporary Mexican interior design for the Ambassador, Grand Class, Presidential and Imperial Suites in addition to the oceanfront Velas 10 restaurant, Cocina de Autor bar and restaurant and Koi Bar. Each space offers a unique and distinctive personality conveyed by the mixture of shapes and the selection of materials. Natural and warm materials, such as wood and marbles, were used in each of the locations. At Cocina de Autor, the textures, colors and lighting in the design are intended to generate some theatrical attention to the area while the food still remains the true protagonist. The Koi Bar is more dramatic with strong
contrasts between the colors. Red highlights black marbles and granites. At Grand Velas Los Cabos, renowned interior designer Melín Castro of Melín Castro Designs was in charge of the design of the striking Lobby, Se Spa, Kids' and Teen Clubs, Amat Coffee Bar and Boutique. With impressive views of the Sea of Cortez, each area of the lobby coexists in harmony, with a neutral palette of colors to give nature the leading role. A display of art is featured in every corner including a 6 m bronze sculpture from Alejandro Colunga, hanging works from Oaxacan artists Rosendo Pérez Pinacho and Amador Montes, two striking white oak armchairs handcrafted by Matthias Pliessnig, and sculptures by Sergio Bustamante. Ezequiel Farca, of award-winning design and architecture firm Ezequiel Farca + Cristina Grappin, designed Frida. The restaurant features an environment of the late forties with art deco motifs that is a reminder of a period of glamour in Mexico. Drawing inspiration from Frida Kahlo's work, elaborate elements and colors are placed carefully within the decorative objects, finishes and furnishing. An emphasis
