The top 5 destinations for group travel include: Florida, California, Las Vegas, the Caribbean and Mexico 55 percent of group travelers are traveling for a family reunion or function. Younger respondents (21-34) are more likely to plan friend reunions, school group/class reunions, Bachelor/Bachelorette parties, and concerts or other entertainment/spectator sport events. ccording to a recent PhoCusWright study, 2007 will be the first time transactions on the Internet will account for more than half (54 percent) of all U.S. travel bookings. According to a separate PhoCusWright study, one of the key competitive areas for the online travel industry is in the groups and meetings market, which they say will represent $175 billion by 2008. One online company leading the way for the group travel market is Colorado-based, Groople.com. 'What we've found in the group travel market is that many people do not identify themselves as a group and therefore they don’t take advantage of the services and travel options for groups or the new online collaboration tools to make group travel easy to plan,’ said Mike Stacy, CEO of Groople. ‘With the growing popularity of mancations, girlfriend getaways and other group-oriented travel, Groople has evolved the group travel booking process, focusing on travel options based on group types.’ When using the Internet to plan a group trip or gathering, respondents to the PhoCusWright survey said the most important things they look for in a Website are quick response times to requests, ability to speak to a live person, ability to receive 8 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

group discounts and planning tools such as calendars, maps and directions and trip idea recommendations. Whether planning a family reunion, corporate meeting or weekend with the guys, Groople knows groups and knows what groups need in order to make their getaway or gathering a success. Groople has a team of friendly group travel specialists to assist with bookings and make changes to itineraries on the spot. Additionally, Groople’s knowledgeable group agents will work on your behalf for upgrades, add-ons, freebies and other extra services. Consumers benefit by using Groople because Groople offers travel products designed for specific group types, online collaboration capabilities for group members to discuss their selections online, customized search results fitting their individual group’s needs and more than 60 group events and destination pages offering recommendations and trip planning tips. ‘When consumers first began purchasing travel over the Internet analysts touted huge growth potential for the space, and now those online transactions represent more than half of all travel sales,’ commented Stacy. ‘The group travel market is the last frontier of the online travel industry and

Hotel Fees Grow 7% in 2006 Hotel fee and surcharge revenues, already at record levels in 2005, surged another 7 percent in 2006, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Many of these charges, which generated $1.6 billion in revenue for the industry this year, apply to corporate groups, and some meeting buyers said they are fed up with the so-called nickel-and-dime approach. However, the 7 percent increase is the lowest rate of increase since 2002, indicating that the number of surcharges and amounts charged may be stabilizing, said PwC. Still, three years ago, the industry generated just $550 million in fees and surcharges—meaning fee revenues have roughly tripled since 2003.

of $863.1 billion, compared with black buying power of $847 billion in 2007. Hispanics — the nation’s largest and fastest-growing ethnic minority — will comprise about 8.5 percent of the nation’s total consumer market next year. The annual study by the school’s Terry College of Business and the Selig Center bases buying power on a person’s disposable income, which is the amount of after-tax income he or she has available for spending on goods and services. According to the 2005 American Community Survey, Hispanics make up about 14.5 percent of the country’s population, compared with 12.8 percent for blacks.

Study: Fastest growing ethnic minority group to spend $863 billion in 2007 Hispanics will outpace blacks as the most powerful minority consumers in the country next year, according to a new study from the University of Georgia. Still, the vast majority of states will continue to see blacks as their strongest minority market because the nation’s Hispanic population is concentrated in a handful of areas, study author Jeffrey Humphreys said. Democrats to be Denver’s Largest Convention he Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Denver on Aug. 25-29, 2008, will be the largest traditional convention in Denver’s history, according to the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We are thrilled and honored to have been selected for this convention after intense competition with some of the largest cities in the country,” said Bureau president & CEO Richard Scharf. “The DNC will bring a huge economic boost and national and international exposure to Denver during a week that is traditionally very slow for the city’s hospitality industry,” he said.

T

Denver’s Largest Convention “Denver has routinely hosted conventions of 28,000 to 30,000 people. However, with an estimated attendance of 35,000, the DNC will be the single largest traditional gathering in the city’s history,” Scharf said. World Youth Day in 1993 attracted an estimated 90,000 youths from around the world, however the majority of them stayed in private homes, campgrounds and other facilities created specifically for this event. The DNC will be the largest event using hotel rooms. Other notable Denver conventions have included Lions International with 30,000 in 1988 and 2003; the Consumer Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) with 28,000 in 2006; and the Imperial Shrine with 30,000 in 1994 and 2005. 10 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

Denver Is Ready to Handle the DNC Scharf has no doubts about Denver’s ability to handle a group this size. “Metro Denver has added over 5,000 hotel rooms since 2000 and there are another 2,000 rooms set to come on line before the DNC. We currently have more than 40,000 hotel rooms in the metro area. The DNC is requesting only 18,000 rooms for their meeting. Boston hosted this meeting in 2004 with 35,000 hotel rooms,” Scharf said. The week the DNC is coming to Denver is a traditional slow period for the city’s hospitality industry. “The week before Labor Day is generally slow because many schools have started classes and it is the tail end of the summer season,” Scharf said. “The DNC will give Denver a real economic boost during a week that would normally have been slow,” he said. Scharf also stated that at this time of year, the DNC will not have a huge impact on city traffic. “In September, we have times where there are events at Coors Field, INVESCO Field at Mile High and the Pepsi Center all on the same day. That type of situation can bring more than 120,000 people into downtown, most of them locals driving cars. Compared to that, we will have relatively few people coming in and out of the downtown area, the vast majority of them using buses,” he said.

Economic Impact and Media Impact to be Huge Based on previous DNC conventions, the Bureau estimates that the 2008 DNC convention in Denver will have an economic impact of $160 million

in direct and indirect spending. This does not include media coverage. “This will unquestionably be the biggest media event in the city’s history, with reporters, broadcasters and photographers attending from virtually every country in the world,” Scharf said. Based on previous Democratic conventions, Scharf said it is not unreasonable to expect many national network morning shows and many national network evening news shows to broadcast live from Denver. “There will certainly be a lot of news stories about why Denver was chosen and how the city stands as a shining example of the best that America has to offer,” Scharf said. “Denver has grown so much in the past decade, that it is difficult to get the word out about how much the city has changed. This will be an incredible opportunity to tell the world about the new Denver,” Scharf said.

DNC has Special Significance to Convention Bureau The DNC meeting in 2008 will be the 100 year anniversary of the last time the Democrats held a national convention in Denver - a date that has special significance to the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our Bureau was founded in 1909, one year after the Democrats first met here, primarily because the Democratic convention was such a huge economic success for Denver,” Scharf states. “In 1909, some Denver businessmen got together and decided that if the Democratic convention was a hit, they should encourage more conventions and meetings to come to Denver. At that time, it was only the sixth convention bureau formed in America. Today, there are more than 400 convention and visitor bureaus,” Scharf said. HM&T

Reborn and Renewed Norfolk Sails into the 21st Century

I

ndeed, Norfolk is a great, new American city, reborn through urban redevelopment that has transformed it into a major visitor destination. Norfolk hosts millions of visitors annually to its diverse attractions, from nautical adventures and high end shopping to yearround special events and big name entertainment, all just minutes away from Virginia’s top visitor destinations of Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.

Location & Weather Norfolk, Virginia is located on the world’s greatest natural harbor where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Situated on the natural waterway called Hampton Roads, Norfolk is known to sailors worldwide and is “Mile Zero” of the scenic Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway. Most days in Norfolk are warm, with an average annual high temperature of 70 degrees and an average annual low temperature of 51 degrees.

Getting To & Around Norfolk Norfolk International Airport is located six miles northeast of the central business district, and offers over 200 flights daily by a dozen major and regional carriers, including American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, TWA, United and US Airways. Norfolk provides free shuttle service all along the historic waterfront with a fleet of eight electric busses. Norfolk is also one of America’s great walking cities, though it is equally enjoyed by sailing, ferry/water taxi, electric bus, trolley, motor coach and car. 36 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

Accommodations Norfolk has more than 5,400 hotel and motel rooms to suit every budget, and all are within a 15-minute drive of the Norfolk International Airport. Choose from bayfront properties or suburban hotels located in the city’s major business and shopping areas to downtown hotels in the heart of Norfolk’s historic waterfront business district.

Attractions The Historic Norfolk Waterfront and all it provides is the City’s number one attraction. The City’s relationship to the water – featuring the world’s largest Naval Base, Naval Station Norfolk, Nauticus - The National Maritime Center and Virginia’s newest attraction, America’s largest battleship, the USS Wisconsin at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum at Nauticus – is all part of its appeal. The Waterside, overlooking the Elizabeth River, is a hub for restaurants and entertainment and is the launch site for sight-seeing river cruises linked to Portsmouth and Hampton Roads. Trolley tours depart The Waterside daily, providing an overview of all the City’s major historic and cultural attractions including: The Chrysler Museum, with its world-class collection of 30,000 original works of art displayed in 55 galleries, and the newly renovated NorVa Theater, a Jazz Age movie palace dating to 1922.

Cultural & Performing Arts

Convention & Conference Facilities

With exceptional museum collections, critically acclaimed resident performing arts companies and spectacular annual cultural events, Norfolk is the cultural capital of the Commonwealth, bringing it recognition on the national and international cultural scene. The annual Virginia Arts Festival, held each spring, presents truly world-class artists and was heralded by The New York Times as “an unprecedented flowering of the arts.” The Chrysler Museum of Art – a jewel in the City’s cultural crown, is recognized as one of the country’s top museums, and maintains two historic homes and gardens in Norfolk, the Moses Myers House – providing a rare look into the traditions of 18th-century American Jewish life and the Willoughby-Baylor House, offering a classic example of Georgian and Federal architecture. The Hermitage Foundation Museum houses an outstanding collection of Eastern and Western art, and the Hunter House Victorian Museum is an authentic depiction of life in that era. Stepping into the present, the D’Art Center is a working studio for visual artists. Norfolk is also home to world-class performing arts companies including: the Virginia Symphony, celebrating its 80th year of outstanding performances in Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall; the Virginia Opera, under the direction of Peter Mark, the Commonwealth’s official opera and named “one of the nation’s very best regional companies,” by NBC Nightly News; the Virginia Stage Company, the region’s professional resident theater company, housed in the National Historic Landmark, Wells Theatre; and the Virginia Ballet Theater and Virginia Chorale.

It’s easy to do business in Norfolk. With its conference facilities conveniently close together, a variety of accommodations, diverse cultural and entertainment attractions, and enviably moderate climate, Norfolk is a meeting planner’s dream. Just blocks from the historic waterfront, the Norfolk Scope Cultural and Convention Center is a unique “convention campus,” which includes the dome-shaped Scope Arena, the majestic Chrysler Hall and a self-contained 600-space parking facility. Norfolk Scope’s 85,000 square feet of contiguous meeting space is one of Virginia’s largest. The Waterside Convention Center, also located in the downtown historic waterfront area, is attached on three floors to the Waterside Marriott Hotel. The center contains 36,363 square feet of meeting space, and can fulfill the needs of large groups requiring 1,300 to 2,100 rooms.

Festivals Music, arts, historical and cultural festivals are a Norfolk specialty. Life is celebrated daily with more than 65 public parties and festivals annually, showcasing crafts, music, multi-cultural celebrations and food. Nearly all festivals are staged on the waterfront. Annual celebrations include the Bayou Boogaloo & Cajun Food Festival, Reggae on the River, Town Point Jazz and Blues Festival, and Town Point Virginia Wine Festival.

History & Historic Sites Founded in 1682, the history of Greater Norfolk coincides with the birth of our nation, and throughout the region, evidence of this important past can be enjoyed today. Norfolk’s oldest church is St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, built in 1739. It survived the burning of the City by the British in 1776 and has a cannonball fired from a ship lodged in one of its walls. Christ and Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is generally considered to be the finest example of 20th Century Gothic Revival design in the Mid-Atlantic. Rebuilt after the American Revolution, the City became an important shipbuilding and maritime center and today Norfolk is home to the world’s largest naval station. From the picturesque Freemason District – Norfolk’s oldest neighborhood and the Civil War Trail to The MacArthur Memorial, the arrival this fall of the USS Wisconsin at The Hampton Roads Naval Museum at Nauticus and celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Korean War, Norfolk provides an important historical perspective on the 50-mile Virginia waterfront region. For more information about Norfolk, visit the City on the web at www.norfolkcvb.com, or call 757-664-6620 or toll-free 800-368-3097.

Shopping From antique shops and quaint boutiques to regional super-malls, Norfolk is the shining shopping star of The Virginia Waterfront region. The centerpiece of downtown revitalization, MacArthur Center Mall contains over one million square feet and features 150 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Combined with Granby Row’s art galleries, specialty stores and upscale furnishings and the great antiquing and flea market treasures in Historic Ghent, Norfolk offers shopping for everything.

Nightlife Norfolk is the region’s mecca for nightlife with its newly expanded entertainment center at the Waterside, shows, sports and other entertainment at Norfolk Scope, Chrysler Hall and in the clubs of Granby Street.

And there is so much more… Norfolk boasts Virginia’s most popular array of diverse things to see and do. Baseball fans can take in the action at Harbor Park, home of the Norfolk Tides, the AAA affiliate of the New York Mets. Locals go to The Harrison Boathouse with its 16,000foot long pier at Ocean View Beach for swimming, sunning, fishing and boating, and free family concerts are staged in Ocean View Park. The 100-year old Virginia Zoo, nestled on 53 acres along the Lafayette River, is home to over 350 animals, and Norfolk’s 155-acre Botanical Garden has one of the largest collections of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons on the East Coast. www.hispanicmeetingstravel.com | HM&T 37

The magnificent wood-paneled 31,029 sq. ft ballroom features programmable LED lighting. The soaring 147 foot observation tower showcases panoramic views of the resort and outlying areas. “This is an important milestone for the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and our city,” said James B. Ricketts, director of the Virginia Beach CVB. “After over 15 years of discussion and planning, we are celebrating the opening of the final phase of our incredible new Convention Center.” “This facility has put Virginia Beach on the map as a premier meetings destination, while drawing recognition from both the national and international business community,” James B. Ricketts continued. “We’re looking forward to our city’s continued success.” New groups that have booked the Convention Center for upcoming events include: North American Association for Environmental Education 2007 Annual Conference; International Church of our Lord Jesus Christ - 2007 Bishop Conference; Virginia Family Career and Community Leaders of America Recognition Conference - 2007; Liberty Tax Convention - 2008 and 2009; Spanish Eastern District 2007 Women’s Assemblies of God; and the Washington Redskins - May 2007. World-renowned architectural firm SOM, whose design of the Convention Center was recently honored by the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects, captured the essence of Virginia Beach’s coastal destination through the use of water, wood and natural light throughout the building. A soaring nautical glass curtain wall appears to float in pools of water both inside and outside the building, wooden boardwalks provide access to the building and a porch-like venue allows for an outdoor experience. The oceanfront skyline can be viewed from the10-story observation deck. The facility offers the latest wired and wireless technology, including utility service on a 30-foot grid in the exhibit hall floor with 60 and 100-amp electrical service, as well as fiber-optic and category VI cable. In addition to now offering more than 500,000 gross square feet of space, the Convention Center offers a full-time, award-winning professional staff ready to assist the meeting professional with all aspects of meeting and event planning. The Virginia Beach CVB was recently honored with Corporate

Deborah Deras:

Helping Adrenaline Junkies to Kick the Habit

W

hen Deborah Deras was three years old, her parents brought home the best surprise ever—an adorable baby brother. The family’s joy was tempered, however, by the sad reality that the baby had been born with a profound disability. Immediately, their energy and focus shift-

ed to the infant and his needs. A devoted sister, Deborah willingly participated in her brother’s care, adopting a caretaker role that influenced her life into adulthood. Growing up, Deborah’s parents—her father from Colombia and her mother’s family from Lithuania—instilled in her the traditional values of countless immmigrants: education and

“Deborah’s extraordinary passion for life energizes everyone she meets. She entertains and inspires, but more importantly, she changes lives.” hard work are the keys to the American dream. Never allowed to rest long on her accomplishments, Deborah found each of her achievements met by a challenge to do more. When she was 19, two tragedies shook Deborah’s world. The divorce of her parents, followed by her brother’s sudden and untimely death at the age of 16, left the family emotionally and spiritually shaken. Though it seemed that her grief would consume her, Deborah’s pain ultimately forced her to take stock of her young life and propelled her into maturity. Abandoning her business college curriculum, Deborah began studies in counseling, with a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Thus, she began the journey that made her what she is today—a charismatic speaker, trainer, and life coach. She speaks on topics of Motivation, Time Management, Life Balance, Peak Performance and Diversity. 42 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

The path wasn’t always smooth, however. Fueled by the internalized parental challenge to work harder, Deborah’s desire to help and please others went into overdrive. In her own words: “I was compelled to be in constant activity. I scheduled every moment of every day from dusk until dawn—I kept taking on more because I couldn’t say “no.” As a perfectionist, I couldn’t delegate anything—I believed that no one else could do it the way it needed to be done. I was burned out, stressed out, and ready to opt out.” When exhaustion and ill health threatened to stop her in her tracks, Deborah identified her compulsive activity as “adrenaline addiction” She defines an adrenaline addict as “someone who has the compulsion to be in constant activity and is addicted to the burst of energy that adrenaline provides”. Recognizing the costs of such behavior both in her own life and in that of many of her clients Deborah has written, along with her business partner, (and fellow adrenaline addict), Adoley Odunton, their book, Confessions of an Adrenaline Addict: How to Achieve More with Less Effort. The book shares the recovery program they developed and strategies to avoid burn out and achieve high-level production with greater ease. Together, Deras and Odunton are the founders and owners of Synergy Unlimited, a professional development company. In motivational talks based on the book, Deborah captivates audiences with her honesty and openness in confessing the selfdestructive behaviors that led to her adrenaline addiction, encouraging them to abandon similar behaviors and make choices to create a successful life. According to Odunton: “Deborah’s extraordinary passion for life energizes everyone she meets. She entertains and inspires, but more importantly, she changes lives.” Deborah’s presentations, delivered in a high-energy, interactive style, incorporate Salsa dancing, creative exercises, and compelling anecdotes to engage participants and help them assimilate the workshop material for use long after the session ends. In the words of one workshop participant, “Deborah lit a fire under me—and I hope it keeps goi Contact HM&T Speaker Bureau 281-333-1755 to have Deborah Deras (www.synergyunlimited.net or www.passionatelivingnow.com) at your next event. Authentic South of the Border Tamayo’s Pescado a la Cuisine found in East LA. exican restaurants are ubiquitous in Southern California, from small family-owned eateries to the larger chains that are scattered across our cities. One restaurant, however, stands out from all the rest – Tamayo, located in East Los Angeles. Upon entering the restaurant, you are instantly captivated by its beautiful interior with magnificent wooden beams high above you, and the marvelous collection of art that graces the walls. Named for renowned Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, the restaurant has earned rave reviews since it first opened its doors in 1988. “This is Mexican cooking much like you’d be offered in Mexico City’s best restaurants….” (The Hollywood Reporter, 1988) The menu ranges from traditional fare such as the always popular tacos, enchiladas, fajitas and burritos to wonderful salads, NY steak, specialty fish entrees, and Oaxacan chicken mole (made using Olga Tamayo’s special recipe). la Parrilla Estilo Guadalajara (NY Steak with bacon and mushrooms), and Carnitas (braised pork) are other popular entrees. For dessert, there’s a delicious flourless chocolate cake or Mango Mascarpone — a frozen treat perfect on a hot day. The fish entrees, such as Pescado a la Diablo — sautéed halibut with a tasty sauce, and garnished at Tamayo with two jumbo shrimp and fresh fruit – are also very popular. The simple recipe follows at the end of this article. Chef Jorge Sosa comes from Yucatan and he brings the flavors he grew up in his native country to the dishes he creates. “I try to put my love for my country and my heritage in every plate. PLANNING TECHNOLOGY

Best Practice Tips for Meeting Planners

Is the meeting ad-hoc or is it a planned event?

Using meeting planning technology to meet and exceed your needs

Determine a budget for the meeting and stick to it

Tips for Meeting Professionals Using Meetings Technology, such as GetThere’s DirectMeetings: Implement a meetings program, don’t just use a tool Have a structured plan for use and adoption in place for all employees Offer training to help others understand the program and technology Get the meetings tool in the hands of the people who can use it, such as the corporate meeting planners, the executive assistants and team leaders Have a C-level executive buy-in to the meetings program Get an executive’s approval and endorsement for the meetings program

eetings-related travel currently makes up approximately 35-45 percent of a company’s annual travel budget, according to a 2005 PhoCusWright study. The same PhoCusWright study found that 75 percent of corporate meetings are considered ad-hoc and are often coordinated by employees who are non-professional meeting planners. In most cases, impromptu meetings often bypass monitoring and negate cost-control efforts, resulting in unmanaged expenses. With pressure to make the most of business travel dollars, corporations continually are searching for new technologies and services that bring ease-of-use and cost control into the meeting planning cycle.
