t's the end of the year and the best time of all to celebrate life. The holidays are a time to give thanks for having the gift of life and the time to spend with friends and family. The season makes everyone happy and joyous and presents opportunities to do good things for others and I'm not talking about gifts. A smile, a handshake, a hug or a kiss all show affection toward your fellow man. What would the world be like without the ability to show appreciation for others who help make are lives better. Celebrate your life and include others this holiday season. This issue of Hispanic Meetings & Travel has on the cover a remarkable man who has made a significant contribution to Las Vegas. The fact that he is a proud Latino who is willing to share his talent with others is significant gift. Alex Yemenidjian, Chairman & CEO of the new Tropicana Las Vegas has been referred to in a Forbes magazine article as "the wizard of MGM" for his ability to help that company during its merger with Mirage Resorts. Yemenidjian, was hand-picked by major shareholder Kirk Kerkorian to serve as president and CEO of the MGM Grand and later tapped by him to head Metro-GoldwynMayer film studio. Alex Yemenidjian was born in Argentina and is today part of the Canadian private equity Onex Corp. Together they obtained the Tropicana Las Vegas Resort and Casino, an 1,850-room property, and restored the fabled Tropicana to its prior glory. See page 14 for an interview with Alex Yemenidjian. Also in this issue we are happy to present a report on the 15th Anniversary International Conference & Trade Show for the International Association of Hispanic Meeting Profes-

sionals. Organized in 1995 at a meeting convened in Miami Beach at the famed Fountainblue Hotel the association has managed to blossom and attract members from around the globe. From the very beginning the association has stressed diversity within its ranks and has consistently presented programming that is the envy of the industry. This year's conference is another example of an organization that not only talks about diversity it delivers by creating the Certified Diversity Meeting Professional, a certification program for industry professionals. And has added to its brand "A Globally Diverse Association" as an expression of inclusiveness. Among its ranks are members from the USA, the Navajo Nation, Puerto Rico, Mexico, South America, Spain, Portugal and the UK. Congratulations on 15 successful years and God Speed on a successful future in the meetings and hospitality industry. Check out their exciting program agenda and get to know some of the leaders in the multicultural association world who are attending this year's conference at the Tropicana Las Vegas. To our loyal readers and advertisers we thank you for your support and welcome your comments. Hispanic Meetings & Travel is expanding its brand to include lifestyles, special events, quinceaneras and family reunions. You are invited to submit your own events that may fit in any of these categories and within the Hispanic Meetings & Travel brand. Enjoy the Holiday Season!

Panama, a Top Venue for Events and Conventions in the Americas he strategic location, infrastructure and Latin America's leading hub in air connectivity, make Panama the ideal destination for meetings and conventions in the Americas. "The geographic position of Panama at the crossroad of the continent is certainly the most decisive factor. From it, many other factors have derived such as, a financial, logistics and international commercial spot, as well as recently being recognized as the unsurpassed

air hub in Latin America", stated Diego Fernandez de Cordoba, the President of the Panama Conventions and Visitors Bureau. Panama's international airport is a main hub for commercial flights in Latin America. The airport receives key airlines from over 29 cities in Latin America and theUSA. In regards to the flight connections, a new direct route was launched at the beginning of the year from Panama to Medellin, with 3 weekly flights that serve a large influx of leisure tourists and business travelers. Also, there are weekly flights that connect Bogota with Hon-
duras and Nicaragua and Puerto Rico, through Panama. In addition, there is an established program of collaboration by Copa airlines and meeting planners and travel agents. It's an incentive program that keeps meeting planners abreast of new developments in the destination. "Panama is probably the only destination in the region that you can travel to once or more than once, on a direct nonstop flight from all of the capitals and other major cities in Latin America and the most important gateways of the USA", mentions Cordoba.
Although Panama is internationally known for its Canal, which annually receives freight traffic worldwide, this country has a modern port, railroad and road (Interamericana Road) infrastructure, making its capital, Panama City, a convenient location for international meetings and conventions. Diego Fernandez de Cordoba comments, "Panama has an excellent logistics infrastructure and specialized services. This complements the diverse range of tourist attractions, and makes it an ideal destination for international events, travel incentive and conventions". On the other hand, Panama's ATLAPA convention center has been considered among the most modern and advanced convention centers in Latin America. This center is an 8-acre complex with capacity for 10,500 people. It has 24 conference rooms and an auditorium with 2,806 comfortable air charms, featuring a variety of amenities and services. It's strate-
gically located in the heart of Panama City, just a few minutes from the financial district and ten minutes away from the international airport of Tocumen. Among the incentives that Panama is currently offering the meetings and conventions industry, is a complementary event at the convention center for a group of more than 500 rooms with a minimum stay of 3 nights. It also includes three airplane tickets and hotel for 3 speakers, a welcome reception for participants with a local show. This promotion has a savings of up to $100,000 dollars. Currently, there is an ongoing project to build a new modern and innovative convention center, with an avant-garde design, that will surpass the current capacity of the ATLAPA convention center. As far as costs are concerned, hosting events in Panama is more affordable than in many other countries. Also, the country is an
excellent and diverse destination with a diverse range of tourist attractions.
About Panama Panama is an authentic unexplored destination with an exuberant natural habitat and an enchanting history; a gem hidden between two seas. Panama's prime location, in the center of the continent, allows it to be the main air hub in Latin America. The country offers stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems in forests, beaches, mountains and the Canal Zone, as well as an exquisite combination of rich ethnic and colonial past favorable to the prosperity and benefits of modern day. The Panama Canal, or eighth wonder of the world, is a symbol of an entrepreneur country that, besides being a logistics center for excellence, is the most important financial center of the Americas and home to major multinational corporations and free trade zone. UNESCO has declared the Old Quarter of the capital, Panama City, a World Heritage Site. Panama has natural attractions, services, hotels and a massive Convention Center to receive the adventurous and leisure traveler, as well as business visitors alike. www.visitpanama.com

offers over 100,000 rooms and suites, and more than 10 million square feet of meeting space in its extraordinary portfolio of the best venues for meetings. There is no cost to planners' or executives' organizations to utilize the National Sales services of ALHI, as its members' dues fund the National Sales organization to serve planners in their regions. The launch of these two new collections follows five other specialty segments launched by ALHI in 2010. The "ALHI Level 5 Collection" consists of ALHI's 17 member hotels and resorts that have earned the highest and most distinctive class recognitions including the prestigious AAA FiveDiamond rating, and/or the esteemed Forbes (Mobil) Five-Star rating. The "ALHI Big Box 5-50 Solutions Collection," created for planners of larger programs, features ALHI's 26 member hotels and resorts that offer more than 500 rooms, feature over 50,000 square feet of meeting space, and have at least one 20,000-square-foot ballroom. The "Mountain Collection" offers 23 mountain view resorts,
for planners desiring to conduct programs with inspiring mountain views. The "ALHI Historic Collection" consists of 36 legendary hotels and resorts with more than 50 years of heritage. The "ALHI U-200 Gems Collection" consists of exclusive meeting solutions with 200 rooms or under. With trends showing resorts are back in style for meetings, and to make it easy for planners to access options within any of the specialty segments, there is an "ALHI Specialty Segments" quick reference button on the www.alhi.com Home Page. The button provides easy access for planners to see the options available in each specialty segment. On the site, planners can quickly see details of the properties' meeting, accommodation, recreational and dining offerings, as well as destination information and "Luxury on Sale" value opportunities. A photo gallery, meeting floor plans and specs, and a location map for each property are also easily available.

Latin Hospitality 14 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
lejandro Yemenidjian, the owner of Tropicana Las Vegas, was born and raised in Argentina, which makes the Tropicana the only Hispanic-owned hotel/casino on the famed Las Vegas Strip. Because there is no substitute for Latin hospitality, his objective is to make the Tropicana the home of all Hispanic meetings and conventions in Las Vegas. Before acquiring Tropicana Las Vegas, Alejandro was the President of MGM Resorts in Las Vegas and Chairman & CEO of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the famed movie studio with the roaring lion logo. His vision for Tropicana Las Vegas is a resort paradise with a South Beach, Miami tropical theme. The Tropicana is currently undergoing a $250 million transformation, designed to redefine accessible luxury for today's leisure and business travelers. Every portion of the property, including every room and suite, is brand new, including new restaurants, a new nightclub and beach club, new entertainment, and a new state of the art meeting, convention and exhibition center.

Is there anything other than the physical environment that distinguishes the Tropicana from its competitive set? Yes…our service is unparalleled. We have created a service culture designed to exceed expectations. Every guest. Every day. I will personally guarantee that you will not be able to find a more customer centric culture than the one we have at Tropicana Las Vegas. We will do anything and everything to please our guests.
the property that will remain untouched. Every room, every suite, and every square inch of all public areas will be transformed to be consistent with a South Beach, Miami, tropical theme. You've talked about this initiative not only revitalizing the brand, but also redefining the resort experience. How will this transformation redefine the resort experience?
Hotels always say customer service is top priority. How is the Tropicana different? We have a new service excellence team and their full time job is to stay on top of it, to monitor conversations and do customer service recovery when something goes wrong, monitoring and making a big deal out of everything is critical to getting results.
The resort experience that we are seeking includes the elements of casual elegance, an organic beach club, and mass customization of service. We don't want service to be institutionalized. We want to have very few rules and lots of exceptions.
Do you see any models with which to compare the revamped Tropicana Las Vegas?
The Tropicana is a landmark property representing the authentic Las Vegas experience. When the transformation is completed, what kind of position do you think it can hold in the landscape of the future Las Vegas?
Not quite. When I look at middle market properties, we have larger and more beautiful convention space than they do. We have the most beautiful pool area in comparison. We will have a night-club together with a beach club, which they will not have. We have the newest rooms and suites. Forget the old competitive set, our room product is "Best-inClass" in the new competitive set. I can't think of anyone in the new competitive set that will have all of the attractions and amenities that we will have by the Spring of 2011. Why is the Tropicana going through this transformation? There is a certain romance that comes with the design, the patina, and the mature vegetation that is the gift of time. We want to capitalize on that romance that exists at this legendary property, because people go to Las Vegas to see and feel and experience something very different than what is available where they live. You're giving every aspect of the property an overhaul. What types of renovations and redesigns can we expect to see? Our property has wonderful spaces, and our objective is to transform these spaces into emotionally engaging environments-environments that are fresh, bright, and cheerful. These environments are organic and have a casual elegance. So we are changing everything. There is no part of 16 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel
We want to be in the business of selling fun with a different rhythm and vibe from what currently exists in Las Vegas. The foundation of our strategy is uniqueness and differentiation. We are not interested in winning a race. We are interested in running a different race. Will the Tropicana have a must-see attraction? Actually, it will have several must-see attractions. This December, we are opening the Las Vegas Mob Experience. It is a fun and interactive journey of the rise and fall of the mob in Las Vegas, put together with the children of famed mobsters Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Sam Giancana, and Tony Spilotro. You will see all their personal items, as well as interact with holographic images of the real gangsters. Major movie stars who played gangsters on TV and in the movies will also form part of the experience. In May, we are opening Nikki Beach, the internationally famous restaurant, nightclub and beach club. We are also in discussions with a major Latin brand for a new restaurant/nightclub that will only play Latin music. Finally, South Beach Marketplace, our food court, will open in March of 2011.
much more fun and exciting, and it goes with the name. Our property has its roots in Latin America. It started with the Tropicana Club in Havana, Cuba. There are very few things that epitomize South Beach as well as Nikki Beach, which started there. We were originally thinking of putting the club in the front corner of the property. Then they walk into our four acre garden pool area and they just fell in love with it. What are customers saying so far? The customers that are experiencing the New Tropicana have been swept off their feet. They are experiencing the best service in an emotionally engaging environment that is bright, fresh, and casually elegant. They absolutely love it! What attributes do you consider to be vital to success in business? There are many attributes that contribute to success in business, including loyalty, sincerity, enthusiasm, pride, creativity, common sense, preparation, a great work ethic and a commitment to excellence. These are attributes that help people to outperform. I think the most important attribute is to have a set of core values and to not compromise. Every person has the ability to elevate himself into the ranks of the extraordinary. Success is not a matter of chance. Is a matter is choice. What does your future hold both personally and in Las Vegas? One never knows, but one thing that I am not interested in is in retirement. I would like to spend more time with my family and to expand our gaming and hospitality company, but retirement is not an option.
How did the Nikki Beach deal come about given that many companies in town with that many casinos would no doubt want to partner with the known brand? There were many companies in town that tried to get Nikki Beach to come here but for one reason or another were not able to come to an agreement. When we decided to do the entire transformation we had to choose what kind of tropical theme- Hawaiian, Mediterranean, Bahamas- we were going to have. The vibe of Miami's South Beach is

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch is a renowned charismatic, passionate and influential speaker who carries a powerful message of what it takes to be an effective leader in today's global marketplace. Consuelo has spoken to hundreds of schools, colleges, universities, corporations, and government institutions both in the U.S. and abroad. Since 1996, Consuelo has dedicated her life to empowering a new generation of leaders. She has worked with over one million children and their parents across the United States through Educational Achievement Services, Inc. (EAS), her human development company. Born and raised along the border in a small barrio in Laredo, Texas, Consuelo Kickbusch overcame poverty, discrimination and illiteracy to become the successful community leader she is today. Although she grew up without material wealth, Consuelo was taught by her immigrant parents that she was rich in culture, tradition, values and faith. The values Consuelo learned during childhood were reinforced throughout her career in the United States military. After graduating from Hardin Simmons University, she entered the U.S. Army as an officer and served for two decades. While in the military, she broke barriers and set records to become the highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field of the U.S. Army. In 1996, she was selected out of 26,000 candidates to assume a command post, which would put her on track for the rank of general officer. She respectfully declined the honor and retired as a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army to fulfill her mother's dying wish - for her to return to her roots and become a community leader. In realizing her dream, she founded Educational Achievement Services, Inc. with a mission to prepare tomorrow's leaders. Consuelo currently shares her story with people of all ages and creeds. She is doing exactly what she preaches - living a legacy. She maintains a strong dedication to saving the youth of America by mentoring students and parents across the United States. Conference attendees experience a blizzard of fun at Beaver Run Resort, Breckenridge, Colorado By Amadeo Garcia
ollowing the 14th Annual IAHMP Conference in Denver, Colorado an adventurous group of conference attendees chose to extend their Colorado experience with a stay at Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center in Breckenridge, Colorado.. This wonderful post conference trip was international indeed with IAHMP representatives participating from Mexico, Houston, Washington DC, Chicago, and London. Huge snow flurries escorted the IAHMP motor coach from Denver to the lovely ski village of Breckenridge, a 168-year-old former mountain mining town. Upon arrival the

IAHMP group was greeted by Bruce Horii of Beaver Run Resort and the Breckenridge CVB for a wonderful night of Go Breck hospitality at Beaver Run's Spencer Restaurant, where appetizers, thick cut steaks and fine spirits were shared by all. Horri personally escorted the entire IAHMP group on a scenic tour through Beaver Run Resort's best features. Lodging units at Beaver Run Resort are privately owned making each one a unique and cozy setting unto itself. IAHMP rooms included some with fireplaces, whirlpool spa tubs and great amenities such as functional kitchens,
flat screen televisions and majestic mountain resort views. Beaver Run Resort is situated just above Breckenridge and offers a complimentary shuttle service to ferry you around the town's delights and back again. Our friendly band of shuttle drivers included Clay, Will and Steve. The town of Breckenridge is filled with wonderful restaurants, shopping, an Arts District and even a River Walk along the town's historic Blue River where founding gold prospectors first settled the town in 1859. Outdoor winter activities include snow skiing, snowboarding, snow sledding, snow mobiling, hot tubs, Breckenridge sleigh rides with magnificent Clydesdales and even dog sledding. Indoors is just as fun as you take in truly magical views of a white winter world that for some attendees was like waking up inside a living snow globe. Summer activities feature hiking, fly fishing on the Blue River and just about any outdoor activity you can imagine.
IAHMP attendees visiting Beaver Run Resort quickly took to the slopes via skis and snowboards. Others experienced a heavenly fragrant cranberry scrub treatment at the Beaver Run Resort Spa. A small group rode the town's free Gondola ride for incredible elevated views and additional sightseeing of adjacent ski runs. All of the activity led to quite an appetite and thus IAHMP highly recommends a morning stop at La Francaise French Bakery in Breckenridge at 411 S. Main street for wonderful coffee, french pastry, croissants, brioche, omelets, artfully hand-crafted crepes and special order cakes & catering. Not to be missed is the best fish and chips in town at Burke and Riley's Irish Pub at 520 S. Main street on the top deck of La Cima Mall. Tender hunks of fresh cod grace the house specialty, hand dipped beer battered fish and chips - just a sampling of their delicious and fresh fare voted #1 Best of Summit 2009. Mundos de Mestizaje A Vision of History through Fresco by Frederico Vigil
he largest concave fresco in North America opened to the public October 10, 2010 in the Torre贸n of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The artist, Frederico Vigil, has spent close to a decade on this monumental 4,000 square foot work of art. Over 3,000 years of Hispanic history are depicted in the broadest sense, from Europe to Mesoamerica and into the American Southwest, illustrating the complexities and diversity of the Hispanic experience. Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Frederico Vigil grew up inspired by the rich history that has become the trademark of his art. Vigil first became involved with the ancient art of fresco during an internship in 1984 with Lucienne Bloch and Stephen Pope Dimitroff, who were apprentices to Diego Rivera. Following in the footsteps of the great masters, he continues this time-honored tradition inside the Torre贸n of the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC). Buon Fresco ("true fresco") is a complex process requiring great precision and concentration by the artist. It involves numerous coats of plaster, various stages of drawing, precise mixing of inorganic pigments, and application of paint onto wet plaster. The Torre贸n is open and free to the public on Sundays beginning October 10 from noon - 4 pm through December 31, 2010. Additional hours will be announced in 2011. Artist Frederico Vigil will begin offering a master class on Buon Fresco in fall 2011. For more information call (505) 246-2261.
