On the cover of this catalog, and also right here on page 2, is a print depicting a massive Union Pacific DDA40X Centennial pulling a line of yellow UP boxcars through a beautiful Western U.S. vista. The DDA40X was the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive ever built on a single frame, having two 16-645E3A diesel prime movers. It was nicknamed the Centennial because the first DDA40X was delivered just in time to participate in the 100th anniversary of the Golden Spike ceremony in 1969. Union Pacific, incorporated in 1862 by an act of Congress, laid the bulk of the track for the United States’ transcontinental railroad.

The Centennial
Larry Fisher. Union Pacific was renowned for its massive locomotives. Leviathans like Challengers, Big Boys, and the unique gas turbine-electrics all roamed the valleys and plains under the UP flag. The twin-engine DDA40X Centennial joined that club in 1969. Here we see #6923 leaning hard into a turn with a line of UP's Armour Yellow boxcars trailing behind.
