CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES 編舞的話 Welcome to this new production of The Nutcracker, set in Hong Kong in the early 20 th century, with Hong Kong elements woven throughout the ballet! Typically, ballet is not a good medium to teach history. Even in narrative works the language of ballet is metaphorical rather than literal. Rather than present a historical tale, this Nutcracker uses Hong Kong as a context and backdrop for the dreams of a young girl who comes of age. Throughout the production, details which reflect Hong Kong history, culture and its natural beauty abound, and I have a few favourites among them I’d like to share here. The setting for the opening party scene inspires much of Act I: Clara’s family’s mansion is based on Kom Tong Hall, a stately home on Castle Road in Mid-Levels which was built by Ho Kom Tong, Sir Robert Ho Tung’s younger brother, in 1914, and currently serves as the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. In addition, we’ve partnered with Hong Kong Museum of Art and 21 important paintings from HKMOA’s permanent collection grace the walls of the estate’s glamorous white-and-gold ballroom. The party scene has been populated by characters who may have been seen at a Hong Kong party at that time— distinguished real-life figures such as Dr Sun Yat-sen, who had deep roots in Hong Kong and visited Hong Kong a number of times following the revolution of 1911, Sir Robert Ho Tung who was an influential figure in Hong Kong life at the time, and a Shanghainese silent movie star loosely based on the real-life actress Lily Yuen, and fictional characters such as Clara’s aunties and her Yeye (grandfather) and other iconic archetypes. Clara’s favourite uncle, Tao Sifu, is an eccentric inventor who lives in the bottom of the old Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower in Tsim Sha Tsui. And late in the party, guests pull out tables and play mah-jong. Later in Act I we see typical Hong Kong flour dolls come to life, a Rat King based on the famed pirate Cheung Po Tsai, whose cave one can visit today on Cheung Chau, and a majestic bamboo forest—a nod to the stunning old-growth bamboo from the Hong Kong Botanical Gardens. A life-sized origami boat made from a popular early-20 th century Hong Kong newspaper floats by to bring Clara from Winter to Springtime. Tchaikovsky’s score for Act II features a series of national dances which we’ve adapted to reflect local culture: the Spanish dance becomes a dance for strutting Peacocks from the Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Gardens; the Arabian dance depicts the Chinese legend of the White Snake; the Chinese variation finds a little boy having an adventure at the Cheung Chau Bun Festival; the Russian variation becomes a horserace for a team of Jockeys from the Hong Kong Jockey Club; the

Mirlitons or Reed Flutes become a flock of Hong Kong yellow-crested Cockatoos—in doing research for this production I was intrigued by news clippings of a tiger attack in Hong Kong in 1915, and as such, the Cockatoos receive an unwanted feline visitor during their dance. And in a nod to Hong Kong food culture, the traditional Mother Ginger becomes Mother Dim Sum and her Dim Sum Clowns. There are even brief appearances by pinkhued Chinese white dolphins which are indigenous to Hong Kong waters, and by a skittish wild boar from The Peak. Act II’s proceedings take place beneath a canopy of Hong Kong bauhinia flowers, which eventually come to life and dance a grand waltz. This production is meant to be a celebration of the city we love so much. We are glad you are here to share it with us, and we hope you and your loved ones enjoy a magical holiday season.

Through the open doors of Kom Tong Hall, Clara and her family and friends dance around in early 20 th century Hong Kong. The stage reveals sets and designs which are familiar to most of us and are a significant part of Clara’s magical journey. As the story unfolds, it uncovers the underlying Hong Kong roots behind the character and stage designs. The Nutcracker, created by Septime Webre and his team, incorporates Hong Kong history and customs to the ballet classic and pays tribute to local culture, showcasing the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, rickshaws, Cheung Chau Bun Festival, shadow puppet theatre, delicious dim sum and much more. Employing exquisite ballet language and innovative design elements, The Nutcracker opens up the local cultural context, expressing the sentiments of old Hong Kong through the ballet. In between the splendid designs and stage space, a poetic fantasy emerges. Hong Kong Ballet is honoured to present The Nutcracker to everyone. We hope you enjoy our delightful creation.

ACT I 第一幕

It’s Christmas Eve in early 20 th century Hong Kong. Clara’s brother Fritz is being naughty as the rest of the family is preparing for a sumptuous Christmas Eve party. Guests begin to arrive, including Dr Sun Yat-sen and his wife, Soong Ching-ling, who are visiting Hong Kong during the festive season, Sir Robert Ho Tung, one of Hong Kong’s most prominent citizens, a glamorous Shanghainese silent movie star, and many other family friends. Clara’s favourite uncle, the mysterious Tao Sifu enters with his handsome young nephew who greets Clara with a kiss on the hand. Tao Sifu entertains guests with a shadow puppet show and with dancing Peony, Crane and Monkey King dolls. Finally, he presents Clara with a special gift: a Nutcracker. Jealous of his sister’s present, Fritz seizes the Nutcracker and breaks it, but Tao Sifu fixes the Nutcracker with a bit of handkerchief magic. As the party ends, Clara places the Nutcracker under the Christmas tree. Later that night, after everyone has gone to bed, Clara tiptoes downstairs to retrieve her Nutcracker. Suddenly the room is filled with scurrying mice, which she bravely scares away. Eventually Clara drifts off to sleep and begins to dream. When the clock strikes midnight, Tao Sifu’s magic begins! The Christmas tree grows and a battle ensues between Clara’s Nutcracker and his brigade of toy soldiers, and the menacing Rats who arrive in a pirate junk. As the Rat King nears victory, Clara kills the Rat King with her shoe and saves the Nutcracker. Suddenly the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince who leads Clara on a magical journey through a majestic bamboo forest covered in snow.

Clara and the Nutcracker Prince travel from winter into spring, where the bauhinia blossoms are in full bloom. They are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy, her Cavalier and their attendants: kaleidoscopes of butterflies, dragonflies, mushrooms, bumble bees, a rabbit, a wild boar, and other creatures. Soon, others gather to welcome Clara: a muster of Peacocks strut; the White Snake and the Academic dance exotically; dancing Lions burst forth at the Cheung Chau Bun Festival; a team of Jockeys race by; Hong Kong Cockatoos cavort with a White Tiger; Mother Dim Sum and her Dim Sum Clowns perform a delicious dance; and the Bauhinia Flowers, led by the Dew Drop Fairy, come to life with a waltz. Finally, the celebration comes to a spectacular climax as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dance a grand pas de deux.

Born in Sorocaba, Brazil, Daniel Camargo trained at John Cranko Ballet School, joined Stuttgart Ballet upon graduation and became a Principal Dancer in 2013. He guest performed at Dutch National Ballet and joined the company in 2016. An acclaimed guest artist, Camargo has danced with numerous companies worldwide such as The Royal Ballet, the Mariinsky Ballet, The Australian Ballet and The Tokyo Ballet. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely considered as one of the most popular Russian composers in history. From a young age, he demonstrated an incredible skill for melodic expression of strong emotion which contributed to his creation of symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets and more. His masterpieces of theatre works include the opera Eugene Onegin and the ballets The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. The intensity of his music has rendered his works revered with generations of music lovers.

Gabriela Tylesova is an award-winning set and costume designer. Her works were exhibited at Prague Quadrennial in 1999 and 2015 and in the Moscow exhibition Costume at the Turn of the Century in 2015. Her design career spans 22 years and includes productions for Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, DV8, Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre, Really Useful Group, Horipro in Japan, Stage Entertainment Germany and US, The Gordon Frost Organisation, The National Ballet of Canada and Finnish National Opera and Ballet. Tylesova designed the sets and costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

Au Yu Kong is the founder and Creative Director of BASE CREATIVE. He graduated from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage and Costume Design and received a scholarship for a Royal Opera House internship in London. With his theatre design background, Au notably infuses creative ideas into corporate designs. He has produced some of Hong Kong’s most spectacular events and has gained a reputation as a leading events designer in Hong Kong. Throughout the years, Au has created a diverse range of over 300 theatre works and commercial events in Asia Pacific and Europe.

Billy Chan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a major in theatre lighting design. Since 1997, Chan has collaborated with ELDT, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, choreographer Duncan Macfarland and Taiyuan Dance Troupe, Macao Cultural Centre and Trinity Theatre, in addition to pop concerts. He won Best Stage Art of the Year (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards. In April 2019, he was awarded Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for Chung Ying Theatre Company’s Rashomon and Outstanding Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Dance Awards for Hong Kong Dance Company’s Waiting Heart.

Active in Hong Kong and German theatre, Yan Pat To is a playwright, director and educator. He is the House Author of The Mannheim National Theatre in Germany and Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s elected Council member and Chairman of the Committee of Literary Art. His play A Concise History of Future China was the first ethnic Chinese play ever selected by the 2016 Berliner Festspiele Theatertreffen Stückemarkt as one of five theatre works presented at the festival. It was also performed at Hong Kong New Vision Festival and Germany’s Staatsschauspiel Saarbrücken.

區宇剛為 BASE CREATIVE 創辦人兼創意總監，畢業於香港演藝學院舞台及服裝設計系，並取得藝術學士學位。他曾獲奬學金於倫敦皇家歌劇院實習，並與多個國際知名品牌、企業及各大商場擔任項目及盛事設計，在香港贏得頂級設計師的聲譽。由於擁有舞台設計的背景，故其作品擅於將舞台理念及創意融於設計創作中。多年來，區氏曾於歐亞等地為超過 300 個戲劇作品和企業活動設計創作。

A graduate from City University of Hong Kong with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media, Lo Wing is the founder of www. ohlo.hk and a guest lecturer at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Lo has worked in advertising, theatre and film and as a film editor for years, and has created more than 30 video designs for theatres and concerts as a multimedia artist. He has worked for Club Cubic Zhuhai, ViuTV, film, Ronald Cheng Concert, Paula Tsui Concert, Artocrite Theater, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Class 7A Drama Group and more. One of Hong Kong’s flagship orchestras, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has brought music closer to the community, and achieved significant local and international recognition for its passionate performances and innovative programming. Since 1999, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has collaborated with an illustrious array of international musicians and groups, including in recent years Ilya Gringolts, Martin Helmchen, Sergei Nakariakov, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Krzysztof Penderecki, Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. The orchestra is a regular guest at international arts festivals and has toured 41 cities around the world. As an avid believer of keeping music alive and contemporary, Hong Kong Sinfonietta commissions and performs new works every year and ventures into new initiatives, recently receiving wide acclaim for its Back On Stage concert film series, as well as the Tiny Galaxy Concerts online series featuring performances recorded at a fascinating hostel in Hong Kong. In 2021, the orchestra co-curated the “Life is Art” film festival with MOViE MOViE, while continuing to break down barriers between music and audience with free chamber concerts held regularly at Hong Kong City Hall. 30

A highly respected and influential figure in Asia’s orchestral music scene, Yip Wing-sie shifted from being the Music Director of Hong Kong Sinfonietta – a position which she had held since 2002 – to Music Director Emeritus in May 2020. Winner of the First Prize as well as “LYRE d’OR ” in the 35 th Concours International de Jeunes Chefs d’Orchestre de Besançon, France in 1985, and a prizewinner in the 8 th Tokyo International Conducting Competition in 1988, Yip is in great demand as a guest conductor in Asia and beyond. Orchestras she has conducted include China National S ymphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Osaka P h i l h a r m o n i c , O rc h e s t re N a t i o n a l d u C a p i to l d e To u l o u s e , Wa r s aw Philharmonic etc. Her accolades include Fellowship of the Royal College of Music (FRCM) and the “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite” bestowed by the French Government.

One of the rising young conductors in Hong Kong, Vivian Ip has guest conducte d at the Hong Kong A r ts Festival, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Mu sic a V iva Hong Kong . She was app ointe d A s sis tant C onductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 20162018, where she assisted its Music Director Jaap van Zweden and Principal Guest Conductor Yu Long. As an opera conductor, Ip has conducted operas such as Carmen, Die Zauberflöte and Der Fliegende Holländer. Ip received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (First Class Honours) and her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting at the Indiana University Bloomington. She graduated in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, receiving the highest award of the year. She currently teaches Conducting at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

亞洲樂壇備受尊崇的指揮家葉詠詩，20 02 年起出任香港小交響樂團音樂總監，2020 年 5月轉任桂冠音樂總監。她於19 8 5年贏得法國貝桑松第35屆國際青年指揮大賽冠軍及「金豎琴」獎，19 8 8 年獲第八屆東京國際指揮比賽獎項。葉詠詩一直積極以不同形式之演出推廣古典音樂，亦經常獲邀擔任世界各地樂團的客席指揮，包括中國國家交響樂團、首爾愛樂樂團、大阪管弦樂團、法國圖盧茲國家樂團、波蘭華沙愛樂樂團等。她於2010年獲英國皇家音樂學院頒授院士榮銜（FRCM），2015年獲法國政府頒授「國家榮譽騎士勳章」，表揚她在音樂界的傑出成就。

葉詠媛曾任香港藝術節、香港小交響樂團、非凡美樂等客席指揮，並曾出任香港管弦樂團助理指揮。除了與不同樂團合作，她亦活躍於歌劇及合唱演出，曾指揮《卡門》、《魔笛》、《漂泊的荷蘭人》等作品。葉詠媛畢業於香港中文大學音樂系及美國印第安納大學合唱指揮音樂碩士，並於維也納國立音樂大學深造管弦樂指揮，畢業時獲得當屆的最高榮譽獎。現於香港中文大學音樂系任教指揮。

One of Asia’s premier ballet companies, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is internationally recognised as a world-class institution which represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Since its inception in 1979, HKB has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with a dynamic repertoire, forward-thinking community engagement initiatives and an emphasis on excellence. Septime Webre joined HKB as its Artistic Director in July 2017. With nearly 50 dancers from all over the globe— Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and throughout North America—HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. HKB’s repertoire includes celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neo-classical masterworks by George Balanchine, original full-lengths created for HKB and an award-winning series of ballets for young audiences. In addition, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiří Kylian, Nacho Duato, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as dynamic new works by HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky, Yuh Egami, as well as numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers. With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured Europe, Mainland China and the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all. Since its debut in 2020, the HKBALLET@HOME online channel has garnered over 1.5 million views, connecting with ballet lovers across the globe.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, HONG KONG BALLET 香港芭蕾舞團藝術總監

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US from 1999-2016. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US from 1993-1999. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation, launching an annual international Festival for Creativity in Washington DC in June 2018. During Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet, the institution’s budget grew by 500%, and it enjoyed unprecedented advances in the scope and quality of its work on stage, in the size and reach of its professional school and in the development of several far-reaching community engagement programmes that he founded. Webre also launched an array of artistic initiatives, including The American Experience, which developed great works of literature like The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises into full-length ballets. As a choreographer, Webre’s works appear in the repertoires of ballet companies globally, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Colorado Ballet, Ballet West, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, and many others, and he has worked frequently in theatre as well as opera. His new work for HKB, Romeo+Juliet, set in 1960s Hong Kong, world premiered in June 2021. As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York and Seoul. Weber’s work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
