編舞的話
The Butterfly Lovers has numerous interpretations: people may think of it as a story about undying love, resentment against an inescapable fate, the putridness of the patriarchy, the constraints of feudal ethics or the oppression of classism. More than a love story, it is a unique, poignant work that touches on various themes. Even though it is a tragedy, it has inspired countless adaptations, studies, analyses and interpretations, as the story interweaves joy with sorrow and resonates for generations. Transcending time and space, the lovers’ passionate resolve to reunite against all odds is a testament to eternal love.
Today, there is an increasing array of dance productions blending Chinese and Western styles, and these works combine elements of traditional Chinese culture with the techniques and forms of expression in Western ballet. Whether breaking the mould of classical ballet or revamping movements in traditional Chinese dance, this fusion lends new artistic sparks and vitality to the works, presenting an intricate mix of sensibilities. Yet it remains a challenge for us, the choreographers—how can we merge these elements in a way that feels natural, seamless and harmonious? In using the language of ballet to tell a Chinese story, we blend the Western dance form with Chinese dance, and the balance for this union must be meticulous. For the performers, it is an attempt at a new dance style and an experiment in body movement.
關於《梁山伯與祝英台》，不同人 有各自的解讀──至死不渝的愛 情、命運不由人的怨恨、父權體制 的腐朽、封建禮教的束縛、階級主 義的壓迫……它實際蘊含的主題 遠超於愛情故事，這正是其魅力 所在。即使這是個悲劇，都會讓人 們翻來覆去地去表演、研究、分析 和解讀。所有的悲歡離合、愛恨交 織，令故事極為豐滿。最後為了愛 情超越時空、敢於打破隔閡阻礙 的勇氣，也讓我們明白愛值得被 珍惜。
時至今日，將中西結合的舞蹈作 品以不同方式呈現在觀眾眼前， 也積極地將中國傳統文化元素與 西方的芭蕾舞蹈技巧、表現形式 結合在一起。無論是打破了古典 芭蕾也好，還是中國舞的傳統身 體運作方式等，其實是注入了新 的藝術魅力和生命力，是非常有 趣的。但對我們編導來說，這依然 是個挑戰──如何結合，才是舒 服、順暢、不違和的？要用西方芭 蕾語匯講中國故事，就不可避免 要與中國舞結合，這個結合一定 要精準地平衡。而對演員來說，一 個新舞種的嘗試、身體的運用，也 是一個全新的嘗試。

SCENE 1: TWO SIDES OF THE WALL 第一場：高門內外
Inside her family’s mansion, Zhu Yingtai yearns to experience the outside world, but she is constantly prohibited to go out by her parents. Eventually, she is allowed to leave home to study, because her father thinks an educated girl would marry well.
高門深牆內，祝英台嚮往着外面自由的世界，卻頻繁被 父母規訓，最終雖獲得了外出求學的機會，也只是父親 為了給其「鍍金」而做的施捨。
SCENE 2: THE FIRST ENCOUNTER 第二場：初識結拜
On the way to the academy, Zhu Yingtai revels in her first time experiencing freedom. She is so overjoyed that she even thinks the sky and the earth feel the same way. Then Liang and Zhu meet for the first time, and they continue on to the academy together as sworn brothers.
祝英台求學途中，第一次感受「自由」，喜不自勝猶如天 地共鳴。爾後，梁祝初識相逢，一見如故，決定結為兄 弟，相伴到書院。
SCENE 3: AT THE ACADEMY 第三場：同窗三載
Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai pay homage to Confucius as part of the entrance ceremony. During their time at the academy, Liang discovers Zhu is a girl. Back in the dormitory facing each other in a large shared bed, the protagonists are embarrassed. However, they are secretly in love, and their love is fulfilled in a dream.
梁祝二人入學參拜夫子，進行「入學儀式」。比肩共讀間，梁 山伯逐漸察覺祝英台原來是女兒之身。回到宿舍後，面對 一張大床鋪，害怕身份暴露的祝英台與梁山伯之間的相處 變得彆扭，但彼此暗生的情愫，也使二人在「夢中」交織。
SCENE 4: SEASONS
第四場：春夏秋冬
Time flies, and Zhu and Liang’s affections grow deeper. Zhu’s mother sends a letter saying that she‘s ill and Zhu must go home to see her.
書院時光流逝，梁祝二人之間的感情愈發深厚，直到家 中來信，言稱祝母患病，祝英台不得不回家探望。
SCENE 5: SEEING HER OFF
第五場：十八相送
When Zhu Yingtai leaves the academy, Liang Shanbo sees her off and accompanies her all the way home. They are unwilling to part with each other.
祝英台離開書院。歸家途中，梁山伯一路相送，兩人 依依不捨。
SCENE 3: LIANG’S DEATH
第三場：山伯魂斷
Liang and Zhu attempt to elope, but at the critical moment when they manage to escape, they get caught. Liang is badly beaten and dies in indignation, and Zhu is locked up again.
梁山伯與祝英台兩人意欲私奔。但眼見要脫逃之時，還 是被人抓住。最終，梁山伯在被狠打一頓後，在絕望與 悲憤中離世，祝英台則再被囚禁起來。

SCENE 1: AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE
第一場：父母之命
Zhu Yingtai hurries home to see her mother and discovers that she had been lied to. Her father actually needs her to get married to continue the prestigious family line. She is understandably horrified and wants to escape back to the academy, but her mother holds her captive at home.
祝英台匆匆回家探望母親，卻發現她佯裝抱恙，實 則是父親為了延續家族榮光，要將自己與世家聯 姻。見此，她百般不願，開始反抗，想要逃離回到書 院，卻終是被父母囚禁。
SCENE 2: THE BALCONY
第二場：樓台相會
Suffering from missing her, Liang Shanbo goes to Zhu’s mansion to propose marriage. The couple meet and dance, recalling the past. They agree to elope, but Zhu’s mother overhears their plan.
苦熬不過思戀，梁山伯就此前往祝府提親。梁祝終 是迎來會面，二人共舞，追憶往昔，並彼此約定私 奔，卻不料計劃被祝母偷聽知曉。
SCENE 4: THE WEDDING 第四場：英台出嫁
Believing in the power of their love, Zhu anticipates being with Liang one day and doesn’t know he is dead. When she gets his bloodstained clothes from her mother, she is completely griefstricken. Frozen in shock, she resembles a lifeless puppet, allowing her mother and the maids to control her and prepare her for the wedding.
深信相愛的力量，不知梁山伯已死的祝英台，依舊懷揣 住期盼，直到她從祝母得知梁山伯已死，便就此形存神 滅，墜入由悲傷鑄成的深淵之中，如同木偶般，任由母 親和丫環張羅着自己的出嫁。
SCENE 5: AT LIANG’S GRAVE
第五場：投墓殉情
On her way to the groom’s family home, Zhu Yingtai passes by Liang Shanbo’s grave. She stops to grieve for him and ultimately jumps into the grave, dying for love.
出嫁途中，祝英台經過梁山伯之墓，前去拜祭，最終投墳 殉情。
FINALE: THE BUTTERFLIES
終幕：破繭化蝶
Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai both transform into butterflies and fly happily away together. Their love lasts forever.
梁祝二人破繭成蝶，雙雙化蝶翩翩起舞，恩恩愛愛不 絕情。

Hu Song Wei Ricky graduated from Shanghai Dance School and then studied Contemporary Dance at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) on a full scholarship. He joined Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) in 2008, and was appointed Choreographer-in-Residence in 2019. His HKB commissions The Rite of Spring (2019) and The Last Song (2022) have earned him Outstanding Choreography at the Hong Kong Dance Awards. Other choreographic works include Notturno, Carmen, Bolero, Twins, White Lies, Demons and When u see. Hu co-choreographed Everlasting Flower with Mai Jingwen for the College of Dance at Shanghai Theatre Academy and Yi Yi for HKAPA’s Dance School. He received the Award for Young Artist in Dance at the 2012 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards.
胡頌威於上海戲劇學院附屬舞蹈 學校畢業後，獲全額獎學金入讀香 港演藝學院現代舞系。2008 年加 入香港芭蕾舞團，2019 年成為駐團 編舞家。2019年和 2022年憑香港芭 蕾舞團委約作品《春之祭》和《最後 的歌》兩度獲得香港舞蹈聯盟最傑 出編舞獎。其他作品包括：《夜曲》、 《卡門》、《波萊羅》、《雙生》、《白色 謊言》、《魅》、《 When u see》。近年 胡頌威夥拍麥靜雯，分別為上海戲 劇學院創作《永生花》和為香港演 藝學院創作《一一》。2012 年，榮獲 香港藝術發展局頒發香港藝術發展 獎「藝術新秀獎（舞蹈）」。

Mai Jingwen majored in Chinese Folk Dance at the Central University for Nationalities’ School of Dance and then earned a Master’s degree in Public Performance at Joongbu University in Korea on scholarship. Her notable works include The Wall (Shanghai Opera House), Xi Yuan (Liaoning Ballet), Memory (Liaoning Song and Dance Troupe), Bolero (Shanghai Singing and Dancing Troupe), Yi Yi (HKAPA), Everlasting Flower (Shanghai Theatre Academy), Never Resting Footsteps (High School Attached to the Hunan Normal University), look up (National University of Singapore) and Blood Bird (Korean Arts Festival). Mai won First Prize at the National Arts Exhibition and National Outstanding Choreography Awards with her choreographic works Festival, Sunny Girl and Don’t Want to Say Goodbye

Tian Mi graduated from the Composition Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and has taught at his alma mater. His music creations span across various fields such as film, television, games and stage plays, having composed scores for multiple movies and TV dramas including Creation of the Gods, Full River Red and Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. World-renowned stage and film art director, fashion designer and visual artist Tim Yip is the first person of Chinese descent to win an Academy Award for Best Art Direction and a BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. An internationally soughtafter artist, he has collaborated with world-class artists and organisations, including Robert Wilson, Franco Dragone, Akram Khan, François Girard, Zhang Yimou, Stan Lai, Yang Liping, English National Ballet, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Contemporary Legend Theatre, Legend Lin Dance Theatre, Han Tang Yue Fu, Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre and U Theatre. Recently, Yip earned rave reviews for his stage and costume designs for François Girard’s production of Lohengrin at Bolshoi Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera.

With his extensive experience in cinema, television and theatre, Jin Yau has worked closely with renowned artist and director Tim Yip on numerous international projects. His expertise in both creative design and management can be seen in his Assistant Director and Project Manager roles in major productions, including Lohengrin at the Metropolitan Opera (2023) and the Bolshoi Theatre (2022), as well as Love in a Fallen City (2021). Additionally, Jin was Design Supervisor for Yang Liping’s Rite of Spring (2018) and has worked on high-profile films like Ghost in the Shell (2017) and The MEG (2018).

Freelance costume designer and theatre education advocate Mandy Tam graduated from HKAPA and then received her Master’s degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her diverse experience in costume design encompasses Chinese and Western opera, dance, drama, musical, physical theatre and ballet. She has collaborated with Tim Yip in recent years and designed for his drama Love in a Fallen City, opera Lohengrin (Bolshoi Theatre) and the TV drama Nothing Gold Can Stay, as well as renowned choreographer Yang Liping’s Rite of Spring and Peacock.

William Kwok is an independent filmmaker and theatre designer who studied at HKAPA and School of Visual Arts in New York. His major multimedia designs for the stage include HKB’s The Great Gatsby (2023), chamber opera Beauty and Sadness (2019) and a CCTV multimedia musical production Song of Light and Shadow (2005). His earlier stage designs for Actors’ Family were nominated for Best Stage Design by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies. His independent film Out of Frame won awards at the Warsaw International and the Fukuoka Asian Film Festivals in 2017, while his co-directed documentary To My NineteenYear-Old Self was named best film at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2023.
舞台設計及獨立電影製作人郭偉倫， 早年畢業於香港演藝學院，及後赴 紐約視覺藝術學院進修。舞台多媒 體設計作品包括：香港芭蕾舞團之 《大亨小傳》、室內歌劇《美麗與哀 愁》及北京中央電視台大型多媒體 音樂劇《電影之歌》。2002年憑演戲 家族之《蛋散與豬扒》及《邊城》， 獲香港戲劇協會提名角逐最佳舞 台設計獎。電影方面，其獨立電影 《片甲不留》榮獲 2017年華沙國際 電影節最佳亞洲電影，以及福岡亞 洲電影節電影大獎；聯合執導紀錄 片《給十九歲的我》就贏得 2023 年 香港電影金像獎最佳電影。

Metaverse and new media artist Yicai Wang specialises in new media installations, audio-visual works, spatial design, exhibitions and performances. Her works have been widely exhibited at venues including Times Museum, Yuan Art Museum, Beijing Guardian Art Center and the Venice Metaverse Art Exhibition. She has been invited to participate in the Chongqing Light and Shadow Art Festival (2023) and the Tianjin Television and Radio Tower’s New Year Light Show (2022). Her work on the TIME Peeling series with the UFO Media Lab garnered the Gold Award at the Shenzhen International Light and Shadow Art Season in 2021. She currently teaches Virtual Reality at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

Award-winning lighting designer Yeung Tsz Yan has collaborated with major Hong Kong arts organisations and has designed for over 100 productions. Since winning her first Best Lighting Design award at the 15th Hong Kong Drama Awards with Phaedra during her time at HKAPA, Yeung has earned four more accolades in the same category with Iron (We Draman Group), Attempts on Her Life, Marriage and Le Père (Hong Kong Repertory Theatre). In 2012, her design for Two Swallows, Ode to Wu Guanzhong won the Outstanding Design for Dance at the 14th Hong Kong Dance Awards. She was selected to represent Hong Kong at Prague Quadrennial in 2011 and 2015. 屢獲獎項的燈光設計師楊子欣， 與香港各大藝團合作無間，作品 逾百。在學期間憑香港演藝學院 作品《菲爾德》初次勇奪香港舞台 劇獎最佳燈光設計，畢業後再憑同 流《關愛》以及香港話劇團《安．非 她命》、《結婚》、《父親》五度獲此 殊榮。2012 年憑香港舞蹈團作品 《雙燕——吳冠中名畫聯想》獲第 十四屆香港舞蹈年獎「最值得表 揚舞美」。2011 及 2015 年獲選代 表香港參加布拉格舉行的舞台設 計四年展。

Lio Kuokman is currently Macao Orchestra’s Music Director and Principal Conductor, Macao International Music Festival’s Programme Director, RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil)’s Resident Conductor. He has been praised by Philadelphia Inquirer as ‘a startling conducting talent’ and won second prize at the 3rd Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris, with Audience prize and Orchestra prize. Having served as the first Chinese Assistant Conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Lio has collaborated with many world-leading orchestras. Recent appearances include a HK Phil gala concert in the presence of China’s President Xi Jinping and his debut as the first Chinese conductor in a Vienna Symphony Orchestra concert.

Tony Cheng-Te Yeh is currently Assistant Conductor of the Macao Orchestra. As one of the most active conductors among the younger generation in Chinese Taiwan Region, he also served as assistant conductor in orchestras in the region from 2019-22. With a passion for orchestral performance, Yeh possesses precise, refreshing conducting skills, and is adept at presenting music in passionate style. In addition to conducting orchestral works and premiering contemporary pieces, he directs and plans a diversity of crossover concerts for theatre, dance drama and of folk music and pop music, winning praise and feedback from various sectors.

Formerly known as Macao Chamber Orchestra, Macao Orchestra was founded in 1983 by Father Áureo de Castro of the St. Pious X Academy of Music and a group of music lovers. Since 1 February 2022, Macao Orchestra has been managed by Macao Orchestra Company, Limited, which is wholly owned by the Macao SAR Government. Since 2023-24 concert season, the Macao conductor Lio Kuokman has served as the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra.
Over the years, the Orchestra has collaborated with numerous internationally acclaimed musicians, conductors and arts organisations to bring a variety of high-quality classical music performances and activities to residents and tourists, so as to promote Macao’s construction of a “City of Performing Arts” and to present more wonderful performances for music enthusiasts.

Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is recognised internationally as a world-class institution that represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Since its inception in 1979, HKB has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with a dynamic repertoire, forward-thinking community engagement initiatives and an emphasis on excellence.
Comprised of 50 dancers from all over the globe – Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America, HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. With celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neoclassical masterworks by George Balanchine and others and original ballets created for HKB and about Hong Kong. Additionally, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiří Kylian, Nacho Duato and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as innovative new works by its Choreographer-in-Residence, Hu Song Wei Ricky, and numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.
With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB has recently toured throughout Europe, the US and Asia and places a special emphasis on representing Hong Kong in Mainland China and the West. HKB maintains the Hong Kong Academy of Ballet, a professionally-oriented ballet school, as well as a full schedule of award-winning community programmes and crossover collaborations throughout Hong Kong to ensure ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced engaging original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 10 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.
Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work-both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre has staged Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. Other HKB productions include Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan
As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總 監、編舞家、教育家及倡導者。他 曾出任華盛頓芭蕾舞團藝術總監 達 17 年，亦曾任美國新澤西普林 斯頓美國經典芭蕾舞團藝術總監， 並於 2017年 7月加入香港芭蕾舞團 （港芭）擔任藝術總監。他曾是美 國華盛頓一基金會 Halcyon 的藝術 總監，其宗旨為透過創意推動文創 發展，同時為社會帶來正面影響。
衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間， 舞團預算大增 500%，並在舞台製 作的規模和質素、專業舞蹈教學 等多個範疇上獲得前所未有的提 升。他近年為港芭全新創作包括： 以 1960 年代香港作背景的《羅密 歐 + 茱麗葉》和以二十世紀初香 港作背景的《胡桃夾子》。衛承天 亦曾為港芭製作《吉賽爾》、《愛 麗絲夢遊仙境》、《大亨小傳》和 《小飛俠》等多個劇目。

Our creative, athletic dancers have a demanding schedule of up to eight hours of intense classes and rehearsals each day. The Dancers’ Sponsorship Fund develops and supports their talent, dedication and drive through regular physiotherapy sessions, new pointe shoes and artistic exchanges to further their education and training. Your participation will ensure the professional and artistic growth of Hong Kong Ballet’s dancers and tomorrow’s rising stars.

Celebrating over 45 years of artistic excellence in October, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) hosted some exciting events with its 45th Anniversary Campaign Partner Harbour City for people all over Hong Kong to share in the joy of ballet. The public saw a vibrant ‘Ballet Spectacular by the Harbour’ Hong Kong Ballet Outdoor Theatre, ‘Tutu Academy Ballet Camp by the Harbour’ performance on 1 October and the inspiring 45th Anniversary Exhibition ‘Harbour Ballet Reverie’ at Gallery by the Harbour at Harbour City from now until 22 October.
為慶祝 45 年的卓越成就，香港芭蕾舞團（港芭）於 10 月聯同 45 周年活動伙伴海港城舉辦一系列精采活動，與全港 市民 共享芭蕾舞的樂趣。公眾除了欣賞於 10 月 1 日舉行的 2024 國 慶煙花匯演 —「港芭舞躍維港」港芭維港戶外舞台、「Tutu 學院維港芭蕾樂滿 FUN 兒童工作坊」的學習成果展演外，即 日起至 10 月 22 日，更可以在海港城美術館觀賞 「香港芭蕾舞 團 45 周年藝術展：海港芭蕾幻想曲」 ，回顧港芭過去 45 年的 傳奇，以芭蕾舞藝術觸動心靈！

On 1 October against the beautiful backdrop of Victoria Harbour, the celebration kicked off with over 450 enthusiastic audience at the 2024 National Day Fireworks Display — ‘Ballet Spectacular by the Harbour’ Hong Kong Ballet Outdoor Theatre hosted at Ocean Terminal Deck of Harbour City. Everyone was dazzled by the 30-minute show featuring lively ALICE (in wonderland) excerpts ‘Tea Party’ and the delightful ‘Baby Flamingos’, an elegant Le Corsaire pas de deux and the Tutu Academy world premiere.
