Frida Kahlo’s story is not just about suffering; it is about resilience, reinvention and the ability to create beauty from pain. This message is universal and deeply inspiring to me. From the moment I first saw the movie Frida about 20 years ago I felt the urge to tell her story through dance. The work is not so much a biopic but a portrait of the Mexican artist unfolding through a journey of her paintings. Frida always said that she was not a surrealist because she painted her life. By reversing this process – by bringing her painting to life – I hope to share some glimpses of her indomitable spirit. Ultimately, some deeply tragic life events materialized on her canvases through haunting imagery full of symbolism and raw emotions. Frida was a trailblazer in art and feminism, challenging gender, beauty and identity conventions. The ballet celebrates her as powerful figure inspiring audiences, particularly women, to embrace self-expression and strength in adversity.

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican painter renowned for her intensely personal and surreal selfportraits. Born in Mexico City to a German-Jewish father and a Mexican mother, her life was defined by both immense pain and remarkable artistic achievement. At the age of six, she contracted polio, which left her with a limp, and a devastating bus accident at age 18 caused severe spinal and pelvic injuries. During prolonged periods of bed rest, she began painting as a way to channel her suffering.
Kahlo’s art is distinguished by its vibrant colours, rich symbolism and raw honesty. Her emotional autobiographical works, such as The Two Fridas (1939) and The Wounded Deer (1946), explore themes of identity, love and both physical and emotional pain. Deeply inspired by Mexican culture, her paintings incorporate elements of folk art, indigenous traditions and vivid iconography, making her style uniquely her own.
In 1929, she married celebrated muralist Diego Rivera, whose turbulent relationship with her had a profound influence on her life and art. With around 200 completed works, Kahlo’s distinctive voice and emotional depth earned her global recognition as one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. Kahlo passed away in 1954, but her legacy only grew in the decades that followed. Today, she is revered as a feminist icon, a symbol of resilience and a champion of Mexican culture. Her former home, La Casa Azul, now serves as the Frida Kahlo Museum, inspiring millions worldwide.

ACT I 第一幕
The ballet begins on the Day of the Dead, introducing a vibrant, young Frida Kahlo, whose life will forever be altered after a horrific bus accident. Bedridden, she discovers painting, finding solace in her alter ego, the Deer. Frida’s journey of self-expression unfolds as nine Male Fridas embody her iconic self-portraits. She dresses in the traditional Tehuana attire, a reflection of her feminist and cultural identity. Frida meets the renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and marries him, but their union is marked by his relentless infidelities. Her physical and emotional pain deepens echoing her famous quote: “There have been two great accidents in my life. One was with a trolley, the other one was Diego Rivera. Diego was by far the worst.” Frida forgives Diego, but her pain is compounded by hallucinations and the devastating loss of her ability to bear children.
Frida channels her anguish into art, depicting themes of fertility and rebirth. Traveling with Diego to America, she grows lonely and seeks solace through affairs. Despite their tumultuous relationship, their bond endures and they decide to return to Mexico. Once back home, Frida creates some of her most famous works, including The Two Fridas and The Broken Column , a visual testament to her physical and emotional suffering. Betrayed by Diego’s affair with her own sister, Frida cuts her hair and pours her pain into art. As her health declines, Diego seeks reconciliation. Frida dies in his arms, and leaving behind a legacy of resilience and creativity. Upon her death, a colourful bird emerges, symbolising her indomitable spirit and lasting imprint.

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is a prolific, award-winning BelgianColombian choreographer who has created over 100 ballets for 84 companies worldwide. Known for her versatility, she choreographs short works, fulllength narrative ballets and dance films. Since 2019, Lopez Ochoa serves as the program director of the Contemporary Ballet Summer Course at Jacob's Pillow. In the 2025/26 season, she will take on the role of artist-in-residence at Ballet Dortmund. One of the few female choreographers to excel in narrative ballet, she has created 14 original story ballets, including Hong Kong Ballet’s Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon. In April 2025, she will premiere a brandnew Carmen for Miami City Ballet.
Known for her work in theatre, ballet and film, distinguished director Nancy Meckler has directed acclaimed productions such as A Streetcar Named Desire for Scottish Ballet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe. Her extensive theatre credits include productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre (UK) as well as Onassis in the West End. As a dramaturg, she has contributed to ballets like Frida , The Little Prince and Broken Wings . Her film work includes Sister My Sister and Alive and Kicking
Peter Salem is a prominent and highly sought-after composer for contemporary ballet and film. He is currently working on his tenth ballet, Lady Macbeth , for Dutch National Ballet set to premiere in April 2025. His recent works include Doña Peron , Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon and A Streetcar Named Desire . Notable awards include the Sky Arts Dance Award and an Olivier Award nomination for A Streetcar Named Desire , along with a 2019 National Dance Award (UK) nomination. Salem’s music for Call the Midwife won Best Television Programme Music award at the 2016 Music and Sound Awards, along with multiple ASCAP Screen Music Awards.
Renowned scenographer and costume designer Dieuweke van Reij works across opera, dance and theatre in prestigious venues worldwide. In ballet, she has designed for Frida (Dutch National Ballet), Broken Wings (English National Ballet/San Francisco Ballet), Celeste (National Ballet Cuba) and others. With a rich and varied portfolio, her innovative designs bring compelling visual storytelling to some of the world’s top stages. Her opera designs can be seen in La bohème (Glyndebourne), Katya Kabanova (Komische Oper Berlin), Juditha Triumphans (Dutch National Ballet) and Manon and Idomeneo (Zürich Opera) as well as productions at the Bolshoi, Opera Graz and Staatstheater Karlsruhe.
Christopher Ash is a Philadelphia-based lighting designer and filmmaker whose work spans theatre, opera, dance and film. His designs have been seen in 17 countries and have earned 15 awards. On Broadway, he has designed New York, New York , Sunday in the Park with George and Saint Joan , among others. His opera credits include The Met, Paris Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has collaborated with International Theatre Amsterdam and CoisCéim Dance Theatre and is currently developing a Guggenheim Works and Process commission with artist John Jarboe and co-creating Body Language with David Bolger. Ash holds an MFA from Yale School of Drama.
Born in Puerto Rico, Luis R. Torres is Hong Kong Ballet’s Ballet Master and Répétiteur. Previously he was Ballet Master with Chamber Dance Project, The Washington Ballet Studio Company and Trainee Programme, Les Ballets Jazz De Montréal and Adjunct Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Torres possesses a degree in Inter-disciplinary Studies in Dance and Psychology and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance. He performed as soloist and principal dancer with Ballet Arizona, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Ballet Theatre of Maryland and The Washington Ballet, where he originated roles in many works by world-renowned choreographers. Torres is Répétiteur for Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Septime Webre’s ballets.
Ballet Master, répétiteur and teacher Michele Jimenez began her ballet training at the age of 6. Her career started at The Washington Ballet in 1999, where she worked extensively with director Septime Webre. Jimenez joined The Dutch National Ballet in 2006 and was promoted to Principal in 2009. Having danced works by Hans van Manen, Krzysztof Pastor, William Forsythe, David Dawson, George Balanchine, Alexei Ratmansky, John Neumeier, Mark Morris and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Jimenez retired in 2013. She returned to The Washington Ballet as Ballet Master at the invitation of Septime Webre and later Julie Kent. In 2024 she joined the Dutch National Ballet as Ballet Master at the invitation of director Ted Brandsen.
One of Hong Kong’s flagship orchestras, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has brought music closer to the community, and achieved significant local and international recognition for its passionate performances and innovative programming. The orchestra has collaborated with an illustrious array of international musicians and groups, including in recent years Ilya Gringolts, Martin Helmchen, Sergei Nakariakov, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Krzysztof Penderecki, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Hong Kong Sinfonietta is a regular guest at international arts festivals and has toured 48 cities around the world. As an avid believer of keeping music alive and contemporary, the orchestra performs year-round with about 100 performances a season, presenting not only standard orchestral repertoire but also more than 90 newly commissioned works over the years.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta has thrived under the leadership of Yip Wing-sie, one of Asia’s foremost conductors who was the orchestra’s Music Director from 2002-2020. In April 2023, conductor, violinist, chamber musician and pedagogue Christoph
Poppen took on the post of Music Director, while continuing his highly successful collaboration with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra as Principal Conductor and the Marvão International Music Festival as Artistic Director.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Matthew Rowe is highly sought-after for his expertise in ballet and symphonic repertoire. From 2012 to 2024, he served as Music Director of Dutch National Ballet and Artistic Director of the Dutch Ballet Orchestra, and he now continues as its Principal Guest Conductor. Highly esteemed for his dynamic style, precision and deep musical understanding, Rowe excels in both classical and contemporary works. His career highlights include collaborations with leading choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, as well as the world premiere of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Frida. Rowe has a longstanding association with Nederlands Dans Theater, and has also collaborated with international dance companies such as San Francisco Ballet and Vienna State Ballet.

Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is recognised internationally as a world-class institution that represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.
Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work-both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo+ Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. In addition, he has staged a number of productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , Sam and Her Amazing Book of Dinosaurs , The Great Gatsby , The Wizard of Oz , Cinderella and Peter Pan
As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.

Our creative, athletic dancers have a demanding schedule of up to eight hours of intense classes and rehearsals each day. The Dancers’ Sponsorship Fund develops and supports their talent, dedication and drive through regular physiotherapy sessions, new pointe shoes and artistic exchanges to further their education and training. Your participation will ensure the professional and artistic growth of Hong Kong Ballet’s dancers and tomorrow’s rising stars.
