CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES
編舞的話
The life of Coco Chanel is a rags-to-riches story which lends itself perfectly to being told through the medium of dance. Whereas many ballet heroines are created as a convenient love interest for a male character, I discovered in Chanel a strong woman of great talent, full of complexities and conflicting desires. Starting from poor beginnings, Chanel worked her way to the top of her profession to become the most visionary, creative and iconic fashion designer of modern times. Finding the nuances in her story and choosing which aspects of her life would be danceable and theatrically interesting was an inviting challenge for me and my team.
Each scene serves as a piece of a kaleidoscope that unveils who Coco Chanel is and what makes her iconic. We chose to develop three themes: the transformation of the poverty-stricken Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel into the rich and famous designer and businesswoman Coco Chanel; her dramatic, ground breaking transformation of the female silhouette through the years; and the loss of the great love of her life, Boy Capel.
All her life, from a very young age, Coco was dedicated to being totally independent. She refused to be owned. Her fashion liberated women, giving them freedom from traditionally restrictive clothing, and at the same time, her simple, elegant clothes gave women a seductive power attractive to men. She herself loved seducing men, although only on her own terms. Complications often arose when she had to accept funding from the men in her life.
Throughout the ballet, we are aware of the driving force of Shadow-Chanel, the ambitious and determined side of Coco. Translating Chanel’s long life into dance has been a fascinating journey. I like challenges, and it was not easy to find ways to tell this story but I would not be a choreographer if it was an easy task. It is the unknown and the challenges which keep me going.
香奈兒白手興家的傳奇故事,非常 適合改編成為舞劇。儘管許多芭蕾 舞劇的女主角都是根據男性角色 的喜好而創作,但香奈兒卻是一位 才華洋溢的堅強女性,心中充滿複 雜想法以及相互矛盾的個人慾望。 出身貧困的香奈兒一路攀上事業 巔峰,最後成為近代最具卓見和創 意的時裝設計代表。對我和團隊而 言,尋找她人生中的微妙故事,並 選擇合適的部分改編成為芭蕾舞劇 不僅充滿挑戰性,而且非常有趣。
每個場景都是香奈兒多姿多彩的人 生縮影,不但揭示了她的個性,也 道出了她成為潮流標誌的原因。我 們特意挑選了三大主題:受貧窮所 困的香奈兒搖身一變成為時裝界 翹楚的心路歷程;多年來,她如何 重新定義女性時裝,為女士們勾勒 出劃時代的嶄新輪廓;以及她痛失 摯愛卡柏所帶來的影響。
香奈兒自小便致力追求獨立自主, 拒絕受他人控制。她的時裝讓女性 擺脫傳統束縛,展現自我。同時,她 簡約大方的服裝設計,也讓女性散 發時尚魅力,迷到眾生。個人而言, 她喜愛誘惑男性以達到目的,卻屢 次因為需要對方資助而導致感情關 係更趨複雜。
在整部芭蕾舞劇中,我們會看到香 奈兒的影子以堅定不移的雄心壯志 鞭策現實中的自己。將香奈兒漫長 的一生改編成芭蕾舞劇的過程扣 人心弦,儘管尋找合適的敘事手法 殊不簡單,但我還是非常滿足於這 次挑戰。而且,正因為前所未有的 考驗驅使我迎難而上,邁步向前, 才成就我今天成為一位編舞。

PROLOGUE 序幕
We see young Coco, a penniless seamstress, sewing garments of the rich and fashionable in order to survive. She is observed from a distance by her future self, Shadow-Chanel.
一位年輕的女裁縫,為了生計而替有錢人和時尚 達人縫製衣服。這位身無分文的少女名字叫香奈 兒。她未來的自己化作影子從遠處觀察着她的一 舉一動。
ACT I 第一幕 CABARET 歌舞表演
Coco and her sister Julia dance for their supper in a noisy Parisian bistro, receiving cash for their efforts. Balsan, a wealthy man, notices Coco and tries to seduce her. At first, Coco resists, but Shadow-Chanel urges her to dance with him, showing her a way out of poverty into a world of luxury and power.
為了糊口,香奈兒和姐姐茱莉亞在一家嘈雜的巴 黎小酒館內跳舞表演,而她們的努力亦得到回 報。富有的巴爾森留意到香奈兒的美態,便試圖 令對方愛上自己。起初,香奈兒不為所動,但影 子力勸她與巴爾森一起跳舞,並向她展示如何擺 脫貧困,擠身奢華和權力世界。
LIFE WITH BALSAN 與巴爾森的生活
As simple chairs become exquisite chandeliers, Balsan’s world appears. Shadow-Chanel convinces Coco to visit Balsan’s manor, where a huge party is underway. The party guests find Coco, this strangely dressed outsider, a curiosity. Soon the party descends into wild and drunken behaviour, but Boy Capel emerges as a vision of calm and gentleness.

HATS 帽子
Chanel starts her design career by creating hats. Actress Dorziat comes to visit and has her silhouette dramatically transformed by the hand of the designer herself. Coco’s reputation grows. Capel offers to help Coco buy her own shop. Not wanting to lose her independence, she refuses, but Shadow-Chanel convinces her to accept his offer.
香奈兒透過製作帽子而展開設計生涯。蒞臨參觀 的女演員多扎特在戴上香奈兒親手設計的帽子 後華麗變身,展現出迷人輪廓,香奈兒亦隨之漸 冒頭角。卡柏提議幫助香奈兒開辦私人商店。由 於不想失去自主權,香奈兒拒絕了卡柏的好意, 但影子隨後又成功說服香奈兒改變初衷。

Inspired by male clothing she sees on the streets of Deauville, Coco creates sailor-inspired outfits for women that will become all the rage in the 1920s. She is overjoyed when Balsan and Boy Capel buy her a shop. The two men are now clearly in competition for Coco’s attention. However, they eventually leave to re-join their upper-class world, and she is left alone and lonely. Shadow-Chanel reminds her that nothing should distract from her real calling. Work is the answer.

As she oversees her army of seamstresses, Coco is tough and demanding. Actress Dorziat gets another transformation into one of Coco’s signature garments. Her fame grows. Boy Capel applauds her success, and they dance their love for each other.

Wertheimer, a businessman who is interested in financing the perfume, has a business proposal for Coco.
Shadow-Chanel encourages Coco to accept the deal – something she will regret her whole life since Wertheimer now owns 70% of all income from Chanel No. 5.

THE LOGO 標誌
There are a few myths about the origins of the famous Chanel logo. According to the French brand, Chanel designed the interlocking Cs in 1925 as an homage to a monastery in Aubazine where she spent most of her childhood. A more romantic myth posits that the two C’s represent the first letters of Chanel and Boy Capel, her business partner and love of her life.
香奈兒的品牌標誌舉世知名,但其起源卻眾說紛 紜。根據此法國品牌的說法,香奈兒於 1925 年 設計出雙 C 標誌,並以此對歐巴濟訥的某座修道 院致敬,藉以記念她在那裏所度過的童年時光。 另一個較浪漫的說法,則指兩個 C 字是香奈兒及 其商業拍檔兼一生摯愛卡柏的姓氏字首縮寫。

In 1919, Boy Capel dies tragically in a car crash.

Devastated by the sudden loss, Coco mourns Boy Capel but eventually realises that she needs to move on. When she meets Igor Stravinsky, she is so enamoured by his creativity and talent that she commits to funding his iconic The Rite of Spring. Their short-lived love affair comes to an end by the reality of Stravinsky's wife and children. Once again, Coco faces solitude but is urged by Shadow-Chanel to dive deeply into her work and grow the Chanel empire.

THE WAR YEARS 大戰之年
When France is occupied during World War II, Chanel closes her shop and lives the high life at the Paris Ritz Hotel. She mingles with the Nazis and starts a romance with a senior Nazi officer, Baron von Dinklage. Using the Aryanization laws that target Jewish-owned businesses, Chanel denounces her business partner Wertheimer in order to regain control of her perfume No. 5. Unfortunately, Wertheimer had anticipated German seizing laws and sold the company to a Frenchman for the duration of the war.

EXILE AND THE NOUVELLE VAGUE 流亡與新浪潮
After the war, Coco is rejected by Parisian society for her association with the Nazis. She flees to Switzerland and lives in exile for eight years. Meanwhile in Paris, her perfume No. 5 remains a huge success, even as the city streets fill up with Christian Dior’s Nouvelle Vague fashion.
Chanel is distressed by the popularity of this new silhouette with its yards of superfluous fabric and a tight waistline.

Coco has a nightmare-ish vision where she and her team rip the Dior dresses off all the women. Satisfied, Coco puts the women back into her signature look and silhouette. Her comeback is funded by her former partner and now nemesis Wertheimer. Finally, she becomes the icon that was her destiny. In the distance, Boy Capel watches over her.
香奈兒置身噩夢般的幻境中,看到自己和團隊成 員扯下女士們身上的Dior長裙。香奈兒稱心滿意 地為女士們重新穿上其剪裁利落的經典服飾。 她的復出之作由前任拍檔兼現任宿敵維德摩爾 資助。最終,香奈兒循着命運的引領成為時尚標 誌;卡柏則在遠處守望着她。

The Belgian-Colombian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an award-winning and prolific choreographer that has created ballets for more than 72 dance companies around the world. Such as the NYC Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, English National Ballet, among many others.
In 2009, The Temecula Performing Arts Examiner pinpointed exactly what Annabelle stands for by writing “Ochoa is truly a masterful choreographer with an edge for what dance can and should be in this constantly changing industry.” In 2019, Annabelle became the recipient of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award as well as the Program Director of the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Ballet Summer Course.

Nancy Meckler is a freelance director of theatre, film and dance. She ran Shared Experience Theatre, a UK touring company, for over 20 years and has directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe. She collaborated with Annabelle Lopez Ochoa in 2012 on A Streetcar Named Desire for Scottish Ballet. Since then, they have worked together on Broken Wings, Frida, The Little Prince, and Dona Peron. Nancy was the first woman to direct at the National Theatre. She has also directed two feature films for Film Four including Alive and Kicking, a film about a dancer which won the London Film Festival Audience Award in 1997.

Apart from writing soundtracks for tv dramas such as the hugely popular BBC series Call the Midwife, Peter is increasingly creating works for contemporary ballet.
This is his 8th full length ballet score since first working with Annabelle Lopez Ochoa on the critically acclaimed A Streetcar Named Desire for Scottish Ballet. Since then he has written the music for Broken Wings (English National Ballet), Frida (Dutch National Ballet), The Little Prince (BalletX) and Dona Peron (Ballet Hispanico) all choreographed by Annabelle and Camino Real (Atlanta Ballet) and Scottish Ballet’s The Crucible both choreographed by Helen Pickett.

Billy Chan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as a theatre lighting design major. Since 1997, he has collaborated with Edward Lam Dance Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre, Théâtre de la Feuille, Trinity Theatre, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Dance Company, in addition to pop concerts. His accolades include Best Stage Art of the Year (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards, Best Lighting Design twice at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and Outstanding Lighting Design at the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards. Chan is currently the Senior Lecturer (Lighting and Media Production) at HKAPA’s School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts.

HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. The orchestra’s annual schedule focuses on symphonic repertoire, with conductors and soloists from all around the world. The HK Phil runs extensive education programmes, commissions new works and nurtures local talent. Recent recording projects with Jaap van Zweden include the complete Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner and Mahler’s Symphony no. 10 (performing version by Willem Mengelberg) and Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 10, which was released in November 2022 (NAXOS). With Music Director Jaap van Zweden since 2012, the HK Phil has toured Europe, Asia, Australia, and on numerous occasions to Mainland China. Yu Long has been Principal Guest Conductor since the 2015/16 Season. Lio Kuokman was appointed as Resident Conductor since December 2020. The HK Phil won the prestigious UK classical music magazine Gramophone’s 2019 Orchestra of the Year Award – the first orchestra in Asia to receive this accolade.

From 2012 to 2014, he was Music Director of Orchestre Lamoureux. As guest conductor, Karoui has been invited by the world’s top ballet companies such as Opéra National de Paris, Dutch National Ballet and Vienna’s Staatsballett. He has also conducted such prestigious orchestras as Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Accademia di Santa Cecilia di Roma and Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo.

Celebrating the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)’s 25 th anniversary, Hong Kong Ballet’s US premiere of Romeo+Juliet to New York in January was met with enthusiastic applause and critical acclaim. Prior to the opening performance, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York hosted a beautiful reception, and it was an honour to share this unforgettable night with so many distinguished guests. Guests included the Deputy Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations Mr Dai Bing, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in New York Mr Huang Ping, the Director of Asian Affairs of New York State Governor’s Office Ms Elaine Fan, the Director of New York’s Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Ms Candy Nip, the Deputy Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Mrs Vicki Kwok and Hong Kong Ballet board member Ms Lindzay Chan.

舞團擁有接近 50 位來自世界不同 地方的精英,包括來自香港、中國 內地、亞洲地區、澳洲、新西蘭、歐 洲和北美等地,近年贏得海內外各 方支持和肯定。舞團劇目涵蓋多齣 重製的古典瑰寶、巴蘭欽的新古典 傑作、特別為舞團編創的長篇芭蕾 舞,以及屢獲殊榮的青少年系列製 作。舞團亦不時演出現今舞壇星級 編舞家如羅曼斯基、惠爾頓、麥葛萊 格、佩克、季利安、杜亞陶及奧喬亞 等的作品,以及舞團駐團編舞家胡 頌威、江上悠及其他香港新晉編舞 家的新作。
舞團曾踏足11個國家,進行近 50 次 巡迴演出,到訪地方包括歐洲、中 國內地及美國(雅各之枕舞蹈節、 紐約喬伊斯劇院、紐約市中心劇 場及享負盛名的秋季舞蹈藝術節) 。除本地及海外的舞台演出外,舞 團亦全力推行全港性的社區項目, 務求將芭蕾舞藝術帶給所有普羅 大眾。「港芭@家」網上頻道自 2020 年首播以來已推出超過120 齣以芭 蕾舞為主題的影片,累積逾 200 萬 觀看次數,連繫世界各地的芭蕾舞 愛好者。

衛承天 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, HONG KONG BALLET 香港芭蕾舞團藝術總監
Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.
Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work—both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20 th century. In addition, he has staged a number of additional productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan
As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總 監、編舞家、教育家及倡導者。他 曾出任華盛頓芭蕾舞團藝術總監 達 17 年,亦曾任美國新澤西普林斯 頓美國劇目芭蕾舞團藝術總監,並 於 2017 年 7月加入香港芭蕾舞團擔 任藝術總監。他曾是美國華盛頓一 基金會 Halcyon 的藝術總監,其宗 旨為透過創意影響社會。
衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間, 舞團預算大增 500%,並在舞台製 作的規模和質素、專業舞蹈教學等 多個範疇上獲得前所未有的提升。 他近年為香港芭蕾舞團全新創作 包括:以 1960 年代香港作背景的 《羅密歐+茱麗葉》和以 20 世紀 初香港作背景的《胡桃夾子》。衛 承天亦曾為香港芭蕾舞團製作《吉 賽爾》、《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》、《大亨 小傳》和《小飛俠》等多個劇目。
作為一位舞者,衛承天曾擔任多齣 古典舞劇的主角及獨舞,並曾出演 夏普、泰勒及肯寧漢等編舞家的當 代作品。他也曾任瓦爾納、保加利 亞、伊斯坦堡、開羅、紐約、首爾 等地多個國際芭蕾舞比賽的評審。 他曾任「舞蹈/美國」的董事局成 員,其作品更獲得多項榮譽、資助 及獎項。他持有奧斯汀德薩斯大 學的歷史/法律學士學位,是一個 熱鬧的古巴裔美國大家庭中排行 第七的兒子。
