Hong Kong Ballet (HKB): Can you tell us about restaging La Bayadère?

I staged my version of La Bayadère for the first time in 1999 for Vienna State Opera and then later for Belin State Ballet. As a ballet restager, I strive to explore and uncover new and improved approaches to the staging. With HKB’s La Bayadère, our aim was to create a natural setting, immersing the audience in the wondrous world of ancient India. It is a remarkable classical ballet that showcases the exceptional talent of the company's dancers.

HKB: Why did you choose La Bayadère?

La Bayadère is a masterpiece in every sense. The ballet explores a dramatic love triangle that is difficult to describe in words, but one can fully comprehend its depth and meaning by witnessing it unfold on stage. It is not a one-time watch; the performance has moments that require multiple viewings to fully grasp and appreciate. Sometimes, while focusing on one aspect, we might overlook something equally important.

The Kingdom of the Shades scene is a pivotal moment in the ballet, where the ballerinas gracefully dance among the clouds. The power of love is a universal theme that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level. I believe that this ballet will touch the hearts and souls of the viewers, leaving a lasting impression.

HKB: What was it like working with HKB?

Collaborating with the dancers has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. I may come across rather strict at times, but it is important that every aspect of the performance is perfect. I am delighted that the dancers remember my instructions, and their bodies automatically respond with emotion when they perform.

Of course, there are challenges that come with the choreography. It is not just about executing simple pirouettes; sometimes, they must attempt something new, which can be a significant challenge but also an opportunity for growth.

Working seven, eight hours every day can be physically exhausting, but I find it immensely gratifying. Despite the fatigue, I wake up every morning eager to work with the dancers again. Ballet is my life, and I am committed to it wholeheartedly. When I am working, I am in a state of bliss, devoid of pain or discomfort.

香港芭蕾舞團（舞團）：可以介紹一下重新 搬演《舞姬》的背景嗎？

《舞姬》是一部不同凡響的古典芭 蕾劇目，將舞者的技藝發揮得淋漓盡 致。我早於1999年便為維也納國家 芭蕾舞團搬演《舞姬》，其後是為柏 林國家芭蕾舞團。每次搬演，我都致 力發掘新的呈現方式，務求完善製 作。香港版本便着重在舞台上創造自 然淳樸的環境，讓觀眾全情投入奇 妙的古印度世界。

舞團：為什麼選擇搬演《舞姬》？ 《舞姬》在方方面面都是一部傑作。 故事重心的三角戀關係難以用言語 形容，只有見證它在舞台上的發展， 才能完全理解其深度及含意。這不 是一部一看便懂的作品，當中很多 情節要多番觀看，才能領略及欣賞 其神髓。有時太聚焦於故事某一面， 或會錯過其他同樣重要的部份。

〈幽靈王國〉是整部芭蕾的關鍵一 幕，觀眾可以欣賞到芭蕾舞伶在雲間 翩翩起舞的美態。《舞姬》的主題圍 繞愛的力量，與不同背景的觀眾都可 以產生強烈共鳴。我相信它能打動觀 眾，在他們心中留下深刻的印象。

舞團：可否分享一下與舞團合作的感受？ 與香港芭蕾舞團舞蹈員合作是一次 滿載而歸的經驗。旁人或覺得我作 風嚴厲，但演出的每個部份必須盡 善盡美。舞者將我的指導放在心上， 在演出時身體能配合情緒自動作出 反應，我們的合作非常愉快。

《舞姬》的舞步當然並不容易，不是 做幾個簡單的轉圈就能了事。舞者 有時必須要作出新嘗試，這或許困 難，但也是他們成長的好機會。

每天工作七、八小時對身體負荷很 大，但我感到非常滿足。雖然勞累， 但我每天都依然急不及待與舞者碰 面練習。我全心全意為芭蕾付出，它 好比我的生命；為芭蕾而忙碌只讓 我感到幸福，從沒有痛苦或不安。

In a remarkable collaboration, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) and Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) joined hands for the first time to present “StellaLou’s Wonderful Wishes Ballet” in April 2023. The 30-minute production brought to life the story of StellaLou as she pursued her dream of becoming a ballerina. The partnership between HKDL, a place known for making magic, and HKB, one of Asia's premier ballet companies, redefined entertainment experiences for guests and Disney fans through the power of art. It also provided many children with their first ballet viewing experience.

During their year-long collaboration, HKDL and HKB merged their expertise to create a truly unique show. HKDL showcased its storytelling ability, music, and stage effects by composing original songs and designing sets, costumes, and additional elements. The entire performance was anchored by the exquisite talent of HKB’s leading ballet dancers and innovative choreography that set the stage alight. The collaboration between HKB and HKDL’s costume designers seamlessly blended Disney's magic with ballet, crafting a captivating performance that brought to life a narrative about pursuing dreams.

HKDL and HKB have also made community outreach a priority. Through the support of local NGOs, approximately 2,000 children with special educational needs (SEN) and their families were invited to HKDL, where they had the opportunity to experience the magical ballet production through three dedicated shows. This inclusive initiative demonstrated the commitment of both parties toward fostering accessibility and inclusivity within the art and culture space.

Furthermore, HKDL and HKB plan to share the magic with the community. As part of this magical initiative, we will be organizing an interactive one-day workshop at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel in late June for approximately 100 multicultural children from the Hong Kong Christian Service. This workshop will provide a priceless opportunity for young individuals to explore their interests and ignite their biggest dreams, as well as cultivate creativity and inclusivity for underserved communities.

香港迪士尼樂園度假區（香港迪 士尼）和香港芭蕾舞團（港芭）於 2023 年 4 月首次合作，攜手呈獻 《 StellaLou 夢想起舞吧》，這場 30 分鐘的演出生動呈現 StellaLou 追夢成為芭蕾舞者的故事。香港迪士 尼一向擅長施展奇妙魔法，而香港芭 蕾舞團則是亞洲首屈一指的芭蕾舞 團，兩者結合起來的創作，為迪士尼 粉絲及賓客帶來獨特奇妙的娛樂體 驗，亦讓很多小朋友有初次欣賞芭蕾 舞藝術的機會。

歷時一年多的合作，港芭和香港迪 士尼在演出中注入了兩者各自擅長 的專業知識，香港迪士尼展示了其 故事講述技巧、音樂和舞台效果， 創作了原創歌曲，設計了場景、服 裝和其他元素。港芭的頂尖芭蕾舞 者和優秀的舞蹈編排，構成整個表 演的骨幹，而港芭與香港迪士尼的 服裝設計師緊密合作，令迪士尼元 素與芭蕾舞藝術完美契合，讓這個 追夢故事躍動觀眾眼前。

香港迪士尼和港芭同樣重視回饋社 會，透過與非牟利機構合作，特別 預留三場演出邀請約 2,000 名有特 殊學習需要的兒童及其家庭到訪香 港迪士尼，體驗了這場奇妙的芭蕾舞 表演，宣揚藝術通達和多元共融。 此外，香港迪士尼與港芭將延續這 份奇妙體驗到社區，於 6月底，為來 自香港基督教服務處約一百位多元 文化背景的兒童，在香港迪士尼樂 園酒店提供一日互動式芭蕾舞工作 坊，鼓勵他們探索興趣，點燃他們勇 於尋夢的心，同時亦透過計劃是社區 推廣創意及共融文化。

HKB: How is your version different from other versions?

When I restage ballets for different companies, I always make changes to suit their individual needs. No two productions are exactly alike, as each company has a unique set of dancers and characteristics. To achieve this, I incorporate new sets and choreography to differentiate each performance.

I am proud to say that my version of La Bayadère has more choreography for male dancers. In traditional classical ballets, there is usually an emphasis on female dancers, but I wanted to provide more opportunities for the male dancers to shine. I challenged them, and they rose to the occasion, making it even more thrilling for the audience.

I have always maintained that classical ballet is one of the most difficult forms of dance, and dancers who specialize in it can master other dance styles with ease. The seamless transitions between scenes and the synchronization of dancers are particularly remarkable in classical ballet, making it a truly beautiful art form.

HKB: What are your favourite moments in La Bayadère?

La Bayadère is a ballet filled with many unforgettable scenes. One of the most striking moments in the first act is the presence of the Sacred Fire and the slaves, which creates an atmosphere of exoticism and mysticism.

Another memorable scene is when Nikiya is bitten by the snake, which is a pivotal moment in the story. Interestingly, Nikiya doesn't realize she has been bitten because she is lost in thought, admiring the flowers in front of her. Originally, the basket with the flowers also contained a letter from Solor, expressing his love for her and their plans to run away together. Unfortunately, the letter is intercepted by Gamzatti or her father, who replace it with the deadly snake. There are other hidden details and surprises throughout the ballet that audiences should watch out for. La Bayadère is a rich, complex story, and every viewing can reveal new elements and nuances.

舞團：你編的版本有什麼不同之處？ 我重新搬演芭蕾時，會因應各個舞 團的個別需要調整作品，加入新的 佈景或舞步以區分每一次演出。每 個舞團的舞者與風格都獨一無二，因 此每部製作都不盡相同。

我編排的《舞姬》比其他版本有更多 男舞者舞段，這點讓我很自豪。傳統 古典芭蕾向來以女舞者為中心，我希 望為男舞者提供更多表演機會，讓 他們發光發亮。這是給他們的考驗， 舞者亦迎難而上，為觀眾帶來更精彩 的演出。

我一直相信古典芭蕾是最困難的舞 蹈形式之一，專攻古典芭蕾的舞者也 能輕易掌握其他舞蹈風格。場景變 換行雲流水，舞者動作合拍齊整，這 正是古典芭蕾的美麗之處。

舞團：你最喜歡《舞姬》哪些段落？

《舞姬》很多場景都讓我難忘，當中 包括第一幕出現的聖火及奴隸，充 滿異國風情又深幽奧秘。

另一幕是尼姬雅被毒蛇咬了一口，也 是故事的重頭戲之一。有趣的是，尼 姬雅仍沉醉於欣賞眼前的花籃，沒 察覺被毒蛇咬了。花籃本來放了索羅 的情信，訴說他們的私奔大計，卻不 幸被甘扎蒂或她的父親攔截了，還換 了一條毒蛇。《舞姬》的故事錯綜複 雜又層次豐富，還有很多值得觀眾 留意的隱藏細節及驚喜之處，每次 觀賞都能帶來新發現及體會。

ACT I 第一幕

SCENE I 第一場 OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE 神殿之前

Elaborate preparations are underway for the festivities of the Sacred Fire with the Great Brahmin, his priests and the temple dancers (bayadères). The last to appear is Nikiya, the noblest of the bayadères. The Great Brahmin proclaims his love for her, but she refuses him. Meanwhile, Solor, a rich and noble warrior, is on his way to a hunt. He sends his friends ahead of him and secretly waits for Nikiya. They confess their love for each other, and Solor swears a vow of fidelity. Unfortunately, the Great Brahmin witnesses the lovers’ exchange and promises revenge on them.

大祭司率領一衆祭司及神殿舞者（舞姬）慶祝聖 火節。壓軸出場的是最漂亮的舞姬，名叫尼姬 雅。大祭司向尼姬雅示愛，卻被她拒絕。當晚，尼 姬雅暗中與品格高尚的戰士索羅於打獵中相會， 兩人互訴愛意，尼姬雅要索羅起誓矢志不渝。大 祭司目睹兩人幽會，決心展開報復。

SCENE II 第二場 THE RAJAH’S PALACE 國王宮中

The Rajah informs his daughter Gamzatti that her wedding to Solor, to whom she has been betrothed since childhood, will happen soon. Gamzatti is infatuated by Solor but does not know why he behaves so formally towards her. After a lively performance, the Great Brahmin tells the Rajah of Nikiya and Solor’s forbidden love, hoping that the Rajah might dispose of Solor. Instead, to the Great Brahmin’s dismay, the Rajah angrily orders Nikiya to be put to death. However, Gamzatti has overheard the conversation and sends her servant Aiya to warn the bayadère. Gamzatti then tells Nikiya that if she gives up Solor, she will be given precious jewels as a reward. Shocked, Nikiya angrily refuses and then attacks Gamzatti with a dagger. Aiya intervenes, and Nikiya escapes. Gamzatti promises to take revenge on Nikiya.

土邦國王告訴女兒甘扎蒂她與索羅小時候便訂 下婚盟，而婚禮即將舉行。大祭司向國王透露尼 姬雅與索羅相愛的秘密，希望國王把索羅除掉。 誰知國王勃然大怒，宣佈要把尼姬雅處死。甘扎 蒂偷聽兩人的對話後，叫侍女艾雅召來尼姬雅， 希望她離開索羅，並提出送她珠寶作爲補償。尼 姬雅拒絕，拿出匕首刺向甘扎蒂，艾雅及時阻止， 尼姬雅失手後逃脫。

THE PALACE GARDEN

Solor and Gamzatti’s engagement

procession where Solor presents a tiger as a trophy to his future bride. Then, the Great Brahmin brings Nikiya forward to perform as the holiest temple dancer. Aiya gives Nikiya a small basket filled with beautiful flowers, which she thinks is a secret sign of love from Solor. However, the Rajah and his daughter, have actually hidden a poisonous snake inside the basket. When Nikiya dances while embracing the basket, the deadly viper suddenly bites her. The Great Brahmin desperately offers her an antidote…but only if she will accept his love. Nikiya refuses and dies, urging Solor never to forget his vow of love and fidelity

ACT II 第二幕 SCENE IV 第四場 THE KINGDOM OF THE SHADES 幽靈王國

Solor returns to his room devastated about losing his love. The candle boys try to comfort Solor, who seeks escape in opium. Solor hallucinates that he meets the Golden Idol, a statue that comes to life and takes him to the Kingdom of the Shades, a mystical realm where the spirits of the dead dance. This dream strongly reminds him of Nikiya. In the world of shades, Nikiya again reminds him of his vow of eternal fidelity. Love never dies.

索羅痛失摯愛後深受打擊，點燈僕人嘗試安慰索 羅。索羅借吸食鴉片尋求慰藉，在幻覺中碰見金 色神像，神像活了過來，更帶他到幽靈王國。一 群亡靈聚集在幽靈王國翩翩起舞，索羅遇上尼姬 雅的幻影，尼姬雅提醒他曾立下山盟海誓，兩人 的愛永無止盡。

Born in Buenos Aires, Marianela Nuñez received training at the Teatro Colón Ballet School and toured internationally with Maximiliano Guerra and the Teatro Colón. She joined The Royal Ballet in 1998 and promoted to Principal in 2002, aged 20. She has performed leading roles in repertories of Ashton, Balanchine, Cranko, Forsythe, Kylián, MacMillan, McGregor, Page, Robbins, Tudor and Wheeldon. She has created numerous roles in Infra, Carbon Life, DGV: Danse à grande vitesse, Aeternum, Asphodel Meadows, Tetractys, among other works. Marianela’s awards include Best Female Dancer at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards (2005, 2012, 2018 and 2022) and an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance (2013).

努尼斯生於布宜諾斯艾利斯，阿根廷 科隆劇院芭蕾學校受訓，並隨團及舞 蹈家圭拉到世界各地巡演。她於1998

年加入英國皇家芭蕾舞團，並於2002

Iana SALENKO 伊安娜．莎蘭高

Principal Dancer, Berlin State Ballet 柏林國家芭蕾舞團首席舞蹈員

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Iana Salenko was the youngest dancer at 16 playing principal roles at Donetsk Ballet in 1999. She became Principal Dancer at Kiev Ballet in 2001 and at Berlin State Ballet in 2007. Salenko has danced in signature repertoires including Vladimir Malakhov’s Cinderella and Patrice Bart’s The Nutcracker. In 2004, she won the gold medal at ÖTR Contest Vienna, the gold medal and the Natalia Makarova Award at ARABESQUE Ballet Competition. She won accolades in the Dance Open International Dance Festival (2012, 2014 and 2016). Salenko regularly performs as a guest artist around the world, with engagements in Florence, Munich, Moscow, St Petersburg and many more.

Principal Dancer, The Royal Ballet 英國皇家芭蕾舞團首席舞蹈員

Born in Chelyabinsk in Russia, Vadim Muntagirov joined English National Ballet in 2009 and was promoted to first soloist in 2010, principal in 2011 and lead principal in 2012. In 2014, he joined The Royal Ballet, where his roles include Apollo, Albrecht (Giselle), Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake) and many more. His awards include the 2015 and 2018 Best Male Dancer at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards and the 2021 Dance Europe Outstanding Dancer Award. As a guest artist, he has danced with Paris Opera Ballet, Mariinsky and American Ballet Theatre, among others.

Born in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, Vladimir Malakhov was Artistic Director of Berlin State Ballet from its founding in 2004 until 2014. A former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer, his repertory encompasses a wide range of styles from classical ballets to contemporary works. In 1999, Malakhov staged La Bayadère for Vienna State Ballet, followed by Cinderella in 2004 and Sleeping Beauty in 2005 for Berlin State Ballet. He choreographed La Péri and La Bayadère for Berlin State Ballet in 2010 and 2002 respectively. Named Japan Dance Magazine’s Best Male Dancer In The World for 10 consecutive years, Malakhov’s accolades also include prestigious awards at competitions in Varna, Moscow and Paris. Malakhov is currently the Professor of Beijing Dance Academy.

Composer, violin virtuoso and teacher Ludwig Minkus was born in Vienna, Austria. He worked extensively with Arthur Saint-Leon and Marius Petipa on numerous original works and revivals. After Don Quixote’s huge success, he was appointed Ballet Composer for the St Petersburg Imperial Theatres and held the post during 18711886. Minkus composed full ballet scores for La Source, La Bayadère and Don Quixote and also had a substantial amount of supplemental material for existing ballets like Giselle. He is also noted for Grand Pas Classique, Pas de Trois and Mazurka des Enfants in Petipa’s 1881 revival of Paquita.

Emi Hariyama has performed all over the world and works with Vladimir Malakhov at Berlin State Ballet. She has been featured in many TV documentaries, including Putting Prayers in this Dance and the recent Dancing in Pandemic produced by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). An active jury member at many international dance competitions, Hariyama is also the dance division director of Toyonaka Performing Arts Centre, director of General Incorporated Association EIArts, and Artistic Director of Awaji World Ballet.

Born in Lleida, Spain, Jordi Roig studied scenic arts, puppetry and dance at the lnstitut del Teatre de Barcelona. In the early 1987 he ended his dance career in order to devote his time to costume and set design. Further studies brought him together with Ezio Frigerio. He created sets and costumes for productions including Rudolf Nureyev’s Swan Lake, Vladimir Malakhov’s La Bayadère, La Péri, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Marcia Haydée’s The Sleeping Beauty, among many others. He has also worked with various opera houses and ballet companies like Stuttgart Ballet, Vienna State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsballett Berlin, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Ballet Zurich, Finnish National Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet and many others

Enrique Conde was born in Bailo, a small town in the Pyrenees, the mountain range that marks the border between Spain and France. He spent his childhood and adolescence on drawing among those mountains. At the age of seventeen, Conde went to Barcelona to study painting and sculpture. Since then he has worked as an illustrator, painter and sculptor. He regularly coordinates with Marionetarium, a puppet company in Spain, and other street theatre groups in Catalonia. He has also collaborated with the set design workshops of several opera houses and ballet companies including National Theatre of Catalonia, Lliure Theatre of Barcelona, Karlsruhe Opera, Hong Kong Ballet, Zagreb Opera, State Theatre Košice and Berlin State Opera.

A graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and Queensland University of Technology, Mak Kwok Fai worked as a HKAPA Lighting Lecturer during 20002018. Over the years, he has collaborated on various artistic projects worldwide and designed lighting systems for shopping malls, commercial buildings and performance venues. His designs in Hong Kong Ballet’s Shenren Chang (Harmony between Gods and Men), The Rite of Spring and The Last Song were nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 2017, 2020 and 2022 Hong Kong Dance Awards, respectively. His most recent works include Tri Ka Tsai (Esplanade, Singapore), Hyperreality, First Step and The Stage Door on Mars (Hong Kong Arts Festival) and Tai Kwun SPOTLIGHT: A Season of Performing Arts The Farewell Comeback Tour

One of Hong Kong’s flagship orchestras, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has brought music closer to the community, and achieved significant local and international recognition for its passionate performances and innovative programming. The orchestra has collaborated with an illustrious array of international musicians and groups, including in recent years Ilya Gringolts, Martin Helmchen, Sergei Nakariakov, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Krzysztof Penderecki, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

Hong Kong Sinfonietta is a regular guest at international arts festivals and has toured 46 cities around the world. As an avid believer of keeping music alive and contemporary, the orchestra commissions and performs new works every year and ventures into new initiatives, recently receiving wide acclaim for its Back On Stage concert film series and becoming the first local orchestra to appear in cinemas. Following the success of the first edition in 2018, the orchestra organised the 2nd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in 2023, attracting applications from 45 countries/regions around the world and providing an invaluable platform for young conductors to establish their careers.

Robert Reimer is one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. From opera to ballet and from baroque to contemporary music, he has conducted productions of different genres at major opera houses such as Bavarian State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Copenhagen Opera, Finnish National Opera, Liceu Opera Barcelona, Copenhagen Opera Festival and Stuttgart State Opera. Additionally, he has been featured in European CD, DVD, radio and television productions since 2013. Recent highlights include his debut with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at French May Arts Festival, appearances at Copenhagen Opera Festival and his debut with Vienna Philharmonic at Vienna State Opera.

One of Asia’s premier ballet companies, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is internationally recognised as a worldclass institution which represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Since its inception in 1979, HKB has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with a dynamic repertoire, forward-thinking community engagement initiatives and an emphasis on excellence. Septime Webre joined HKB as its Artistic Director in July 2017.

With nearly 50 dancers from all over the globe –Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and throughout North America – HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. HKB’s repertoire includes celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neo-classical masterworks by George Balanchine, original full-lengths created for HKB and an award-winning series of ballets for young audiences. In addition, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiři Kylian, Nacho Duato, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as dynamic new works by HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky, Yuh Egami, as well as numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.

With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured throughout Europe, Mainland China and the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre, New York City Center and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 5.2 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

衛承天 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, HONG KONG BALLET 香港芭蕾舞團藝術總監

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.

Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work—both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20 th century. In addition, he has staged a number of additional productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan

As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
