From Where I Sit
Dreaming of championship rings college mentors and my closest ZTA sister by my side, we found ourselves in Louisville, ready for the fun to begin. But I still had no idea how my mom would handle 800 sorority women—not to mention Initiation.
Sarah: The moment I sat down at the Triple Crown luncheon at Convention and got to hear the State of the Fraternity Address, my eyes were opened to a world beyond the friendships my daughter had carried with her from college. I had learned from Jessie that the ZTA family will always be there for her. But that day, I learned more about the impact ZTA’s philanthropy work has across the country. I learned about the scholarships they give that enable members to continue to pursue their academic careers. Sitting with members of the Fraternity Housing Corporation that day, Jessie pointed out that we were surrounded by almost a dozen Honor Ring recipients. She explained the service and years of work it takes to earn the Fraternity’s highest individual honor. To me, it is no different from the national championship rings I’ve been able to earn in my career. The women who have earned their Honor Rings have put in the same blood, sweat and tears it takes to earn an NCAA Championship. They are ZTA’s national champions. Sitting there that day, Jessie said, “Mom, that Honor Ring? That’s going to be my national championship ring one day.” Hearing that brought a smile to my face. Sarah Patterson (left) and Jessie Patterson Jones (right) share a special connection as mother and daughter, and now as ZTA sisters. Sarah was honored as the 2012 ZTA Convention initiate. By Jessie Patterson Jones, Ν Sarah Patterson, Ν Jessie: In June, I had one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I packed my bags, met my mom at the airport, and took off for Louisville, Ky., and the 2012 ZTA Convention. I was so excited— and a little bit nervous. My mom was set to be the Convention initiate. It was a huge honor. She was chosen not just for her successful career as the gymnastics coach at The University of Alabama, but also for almost a decade of service to breast cancer awareness through her Power of Pink initiative. Something that had started as a simple, offhand remark from Lynn Compton Chapman (former Nu Chapter Mentor and now Vice President Collegiate II) after my college years were over, was about to really happen. My mom was going to become a Zeta. My two worlds, family and Fraternity, were about to collide and become a part of each other forever. With my two

Jessie: Every member of my family has a national championship ring. As gymnastics coaches at Alabama, my parents both have six. My little sister, Jordan, earned her first this past summer with Alabama softball. I’m so proud of what they have accomplished but it’s always left me wanting to accomplish something great of my own. I have been given championship rings or pendants as gifts from my parents, but now I’ve got my sights set on something I can earn. As I continue my time as an alumnae chapter officer and start my days as an advisor for Nu Chapter, I love the challenges and opportunities that are coming my way. But in the back of my head, I know there is a chance that one day, I’ll earn a ring of my own. So this is my championship ring dream. To enjoy the opportunity to serve my Fraternity. To love my sisters each step of the way. And dream of when I might earn my Honor Ring at Convention one day, with my mom—now my ZTA sister— sitting right there by my side. I can think of no greater thing to dream of and work towards. My mom is the one who taught me everything I know about being a champion after all.

I so enjoyed my last issue of Themis (Summer 2012). I must confess that in recent years I have quickly flipped through it and tossed it aside or ignored it altogether. In this issue, I was surprisingly charmed by the letters to the editor to the collegiate news to the lovely article about ZTA’s archives. I can’t wait for my next issue!
Dear Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation, I want to personally thank all of you for your generous support of our research here at MD Anderson. Support such as yours makes it possible for us to discover new strategies to attack and defeat breast cancer. We are making great progress, evidenced by our recent publication in the Lancet Oncology, showing that we can now run a blood test (that we tested here at MDA) to identify breast cancer patients at risk for recurrence. Now we will move forward with the strategies to remove these cells. Thank you again for making this possible. Dr. Anthony Lucci MD Anderson Editor’s Note: The Houston Texas Association’s annual Think Pink® Luncheon raises money for the ZTA Foundation and MD Anderson’s breast cancer initiatives. Correction: The “From Where I Sit” story in the front cover of the Summer Themis thanked current and former ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation members for their dedication. When listing former FHC presidents, Nancy Meagher Hicks was inadvertently omitted. We apologize for the error and thank Mrs. Hicks for her service.
Pam Hubble Rodgers Gamma Omicron, Central Michigan University Thank you for the brief article in the Summer 2012 Themis concerning the “Total Frat Moves” and “Total Sorority Moves” blogs and hashtags. I alerted my Greek daughter about these poor representations of Greek life. I am happy to say that she had already been informed by her sorority’s national organization to avoid these sites. She had also been informed about “Real Sorority Moves.” Thank you for keeping this Zeta mom up-to-date on what is going on in the Greek world. Zeta Love, Betsy Whitmore Kelley Phi, Duke University

ZTA Convention 2012 Louisville, Ky. Convention features by: Ashley Martin and Courtney Long, HΞ Convention photos by: Barrett White of Party Pics and Haleigh Castino, AΨ At first mention, one might not think there are many similarities between horse racing and Zeta Tau Alpha. But traditions, pomp and circumstance, recognition, and fun are all important aspects to both a race and a ZTA Convention. It was only fitting that a convention in Louisville, Ky.,—home of one of the world’s most famous races, the Kentucky Derby—would intertwine them both. Nearly 850 collegiate and alumnae Zetas were asked to “Race for the Crown” June 27July 1, during ZTA’s 51st National and 40th International Convention. From its meals to its programming, Convention aimed to train all attendees to become Zeta Tau Alpha champions. Each meal during Convention was an elaborate event, complete with its own theme, award presentations and decorations. Helping Convention leave the starting gate in
Convention 2012 style, Wednesday evening’s opening dinner was perhaps the most festive of the week, complete with ornate “derby hats,” live bluegrass music and Louisville’s famous “hot brown” sandwiches, all to celebrate the host city’s culture. And just as the Kentucky Derby would not start without playing “Call to Post,” Wednesday’s dinner began the same way—with the song played by Churchill Downs’ official bugler, Steve Buttleman, no less. Steve not only wowed the delegation with his hornplaying skills, but encouraged everyone to begin to explore the characteristics of both a winner and a Zeta Tau Alpha. “To be humble in success and without bitterness in defeat,” Steve said, reciting The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha. “Now that’s just perfect right there.” “My Old Kentucky Home,” another traditional Kentucky Derby song, provided a backdrop for the dinner, sponsored by the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation as it recognized outstanding house corporations, associations and house directors. (See page 16.) Racing themes carried over into Convention business Thursday afternoon during a “Sports Center”-themed State of the Fraternity Address from National President Keeley McDonald Riddle, ZTA Foundation President Becky Hainsworth Kirwan and ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation President Julia Marthaler Hill. Just as horse racing has its coveted Triple Crown—the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes—the three women honored and highlighted the success of Zeta Tau Alpha’s own triple crown: the Fraternity, Foundation and FHC.
A highlight for many attendees was the Initiation Service held for Convention initiate Sarah Patterson (pictured on page 8) on Thursday evening.

“Like the Triple Crown horse races, membership in ZTA provides the exhilaration of a well-earned victory. In the past biennium, we have run a good race and crossed the finish line together as winners.” “As you may know, it’s very rare for a horse to win the Triple Crown,” Mrs. Riddle said. “Likewise, it’s very rare in the fraternity and sorority world for an organization’s national governing board, its foundation and its housing corporation to work as one unified team. But that rare unity is a winning game plan for Zeta Tau Alpha.” Building on that winning game plan, Convention provided educational opportunities for collegians and alumnae to further chapter leadership (see page 10). Retiring National Council members Kelley Snow Harmon, Stacey Verkest Voigt, Lori A. Peters and Diane Hanson Keegan were recognized, and a new National Council was elected (see page 9). A partnership between Zeta Tau Alpha and Group Interactive Networks (GIN) was announced that will provide free websites and chapter organization tools to all alumnae and collegiate chapters. Attendees and those at home were also able to follow all of this action through social media, the official Convention blog, video updates and more. ZTA also utilized a mobile app for the

for her entrepreneurism and humanitarian efforts. While illness prevented Phyllis from attending Convention, ZTA still celebrated this former Kentucky first lady.
Adding to the celebration of sisterhood, the ZTA Foundation “pinked out” Convention on Friday, providing every attendee with a neon pink, branded Think Pink® T-shirt to wear for the day. That evening, the sea of pink turned into a latenight dance party as everyone enjoyed snacks, music and a performance by rapper DJ $crilla. On Saturday, members were able to enjoy Louisville during a free afternoon that featured trips to Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and more. The Kentucky Derby would not be complete without a trip to the winner’s circle. In the same fashion, ZTA’s top members and chapters were also recognized throughout the week. Award presentations would not have been complete without noisemakers, toy tiaras and chants coming from various ZTA provinces and districts. Our rookie in the “Race for the Crown,” Sarah Patterson, head women’s gymnastics coach at The University of Alabama, was honored and initiated into the Fraternity. (See page 8). On Saturday evening, the last full day of Convention, top collegiate and alumnae chapters were honored with Silver Awards. (See pages 12-17 for all Convention award recipients.) “Like the Triple Crown horse races, membership in ZTA provides the exhilaration of a well-earned victory,” Mrs. Riddle said. “In the past biennium, we have run a good race and crossed the finish line together as winners. We are confident that the future holds endless possibilities for more victories of Zeta Tau Alpha.” And just as they were in Louisville, these new victories and more will be celebrated when Convention reconvenes in Los Angeles, June 25-29, 2014.

Convention 2012
Convention initiate: Sarah Patterson Sarah Patterson has an extensive resume. She has been the head coach of The University of Alabama women’s gymnastics team for 34 years, leading the Crimson Tide to six NCAA national championships, including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. Outside of the gym, Sarah founded the Power of Pink breast cancer awareness initiative. Now, as the 2012 Convention initiate, she is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. “As a coach who has instilled the qualities of leadership, commitment, academics and service to her team members and her university, Sarah is an inspiration to us all,” said ZTA National President Keeley McDonald Riddle as she introduced Sarah during dinner on Thursday, June 28. “We are thrilled to welcome her to our sisterhood.” Later that evening, Sarah was initiated into the Fraternity—as a member of Nu Chapter (The University of Alabama)—in front of the 850 Convention attendees, including her ZTA daughter, Jessie Patterson Jones, also a member of Nu Chapter. Sarah took the helm of the Crimson Tide’s women’s gymnastics program at age 22 when she was hired by legendary Bama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. In 1983, after just four years as coach, Sarah’s team made its first NCAA championship meet, a feat it has now accomplished for 30 consecutive years. In addition to six national titles, Sarah’s teams have finished in the top six 28 times, including 21 top-three finishes, making Sarah one of the winningest coaches in college athletics. In June 2012, the university announced that a new Champions Plaza to honor the achievements of Crimson Tide coaches and teams will be named after Sarah. But Sarah’s name has made a mark on the Bama campus for more than her coaching ability. Seven years ago, she created the Power of Pink initiative in which campus gymnastics meets raise money for the Tuscaloosa, Ala., DCH Foundation to provide cancer screenings and treatments for local, disadvantaged women. The idea for Power of Pink was formed after Sarah’s own breast health scare. While, fortunately, she was not diagnosed, the experience left her wanting to help others going through similar or worse situations. “Any of you who have ever had a mammogram and had that phone call come back explaining the different tests that you have to take, understands fear,” Sarah said during her address to the Convention body. “I sat in the waiting room and began to think about how I could use my position at The University of Alabama to somehow make a difference in the lives of others.” Since its founding, the Power of Pink has raised more than $1.25 million and extended to other Bama athletic programs. In fact, in the university’s recent contract with Nike, a quarter

of a million dollars’ worth of pink sports equipment and merchandise was designated specifically for the cause. “I can tell you, I’ve won six national championships and they are all very important to me,” Sarah said, “but nothing has meant more to me than the growing Power of Pink.” To honor that dedication to breast cancer awareness, the ZTA Foundation announced at Convention it would donate $25,000 to Power of Pink. “It’s an honor to have Sarah join our sisterhood, and we believe this was a good way to further the fight against the disease,” ZTA Foundation President Becky Hainsworth Kirwan said. On top of her coaching and philanthropic accomplishments, Sarah also spoke about her excitement to join Zeta Tau Alpha. During a Convention in which ZTA heralded our “triple crown,” Sarah believes that this year, she now has one of her own—winning the gymnastics national championship, watching her youngest daughter win the softball national championship with Bama, and joining ZTA. “I have been blessed this year,” she said. “And now my triple crown is complete. I want to thank you for this opportunity. It has been a memorable and once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Convention 2012
Dreaming big in The Possibility City At Convention 2012, comparisons between Zeta Tau Alpha and the city of Louisville did not begin and end with decorations and racing analogies. Louisville is known as The Possibility City, and collegiate and alumnae delegates were on hand to learn how their chapters can tap into the wonderful possibilities of ZTA membership during both general and breakout education sessions. Steve Whitby of CAMPUSPEAK presented the first general session on Thursday afternoon and empowered the Convention delegation to have “Big Dreams, Bigger Actions.” In this session, Steve challenged Zetas to dream about their ideal membership experience and the actions needed to make those dreams reality. Through a series of real-life examples, tips offered for putting dreams into action included long-term planning, getting rid of unnecessary tasks and ideas that stand in the way of dreams and actions, intervening when needed, and empowering others to dream with you. “Dreaming is not an abstract exercise,” Steve said. “Dreaming is about creating something. Don’t just tell others what your dream is, let them interact with it.” Interaction was a main component of Friday morning’s collegiate breakout sessions. These sessions utilized “open-
space learning” where chapter leaders could come and go to different meetings on 13 separate topics including: public relations, Executive Committee leadership, philanthropy, recruitment, programming, social media and historianreporter leadership. These sessions utilized various learning techniques and the experts in the room—chapter delegates. In another block of breakouts, facilitators taught brainstorming techniques. The 5-4-3 technique, named because it involved brainstorming with five people for four minutes about three main ideas, was a favorite among participants, as it provided up to 75 new ideas to consider for their own chapters. Another technique, the Rotating Think Tank, utilized small groups gathered at several flip chart stations around the room to brainstorm on a topic. After five minutes, the chart was then rotated for a new group to discuss, build off of the existing ideas and contribute new ideas. Tracy Goins, president of Theta Phi Chapter (California State University, Fullerton), favored this technique as she was able to use topics from the recruitment brainstorm and adapt them to other areas such as philanthropy and chapter programming. As collegians brainstormed “big actions,” KJ McNamara of PhiredUp Productions helped alumnae focus on building relationships and discovering the best ways to communicate with any Zeta. The women brainstormed how to get rid of one-size-fits-all alumnae recruitment so that millennials, Generation X, baby boomers and traditionalists alike can build stronger relationships with one another and Zeta Tau Alpha. “People join, stay and leave groups because of the relationships,” KJ said. “People want to be involved, but it might not be the best relationship option for them. Relationships are the most important aspect of our organizations. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as the friendships happen.” Both relationships and dreams were the topic of Convention’s closing Sunday’s brunch as Executive Director Deb Ensor spoke to the delegation. She shared movie clips about two famous horses—Seabiscuit and Secretariat—to encourage Zetas that to win the “Race for the Crown,” they need confidence in their dreams and a love for their sisters and Zeta Tau Alpha. “We expect you to win the race because you have the heart,” Deb said summarizing the week’s programming. “You need confidence. You need perseverance. Race for you. Race for your crown.” For more than 850 Zetas, that race—and its endless possibilities—is now on.

Foundation News
Introducing Take Charge. Think Pink.® By Courtney Long, ΗΞ Marketing Coordinator Pink ribbons, survivor recognition, yogurt lids and more come to mind when Zetas think about our national philanthropy—breast cancer education and awareness. This fall, just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the ZTA Foundation has launched a new program aimed to educate women on the importance of breast health all year long, not just in October. Take Charge. Think Pink.® is here to make women’s health a top priority. Take Charge. Think Pink.® centers around a new website, www.takechargethinkpink.com, that serves as an easy and convenient way to remind yourself, sisters and friends to take charge of their health. This website allows people to: • Register for email reminders • Monthly reminders about breast health • An annual reminder to schedule a clinical breast exam or mammogram • Learn more about the latest women’s health topics and research from ZTA’s partners in breast health awareness • Share signup information with their Facebook friends Each monthly email will include a friendly reminder to perform a self-exam, as well as a feature on women’s health tips, innovative research, and other resources about breast health. “Take Charge. Think Pink.® email reminders are a viral and engaging opportunity to raise personal breast health consciousness and are ZTA’s latest commitment to continuing to make a difference in women’s lives,” said Sherry Server Tilley, ZTA Foundation vice president of philanthropy. “Our new site is taking the traditional self-exam reminder sticker and giving it a virtual spin.” ZTA collegiate and alumnae chapters will be the driving force behind the promotion of Take Charge. Think Pink.® Website signups will be incorporated into existing events, such as NFL “A Crucial Catch” games, Race for the Cure® events and other Think Pink® events. Collegians will work to get entire campuses involved by working with health centers, gyms, dorms and other student organizations. The outreach will extend beyond campuses to towns where active alumnae can get the community involved by sharing information with church groups, doctor’s offices, workplaces, schools, Yoplait® lid collections and more. In addition to the campus and community outreach, Zetas will be able to share their support through distribution of Take Charge. Think Pink.® stickers, laptop decals, cell phone decals and keytags. These items will allow members to sign up anyone for the site through a URL or QR code, which will give them convenient access to www.takechargethinkpink.com.

“Millions of women have been touched by the various outreach campaigns and partnerships ZTA has generated in the past, and the time is right to take the next step to expand the message to an even broader audience,” said Becky Hainsworth Kirwan, ZTA Foundation president. “The opportunities are endless for women who can benefit from these monthly reminders.”

From ordinary woman to IRONMAN By Ashley Martin Editor Kathy Vogt Thuneman can now call herself an IRONMAN. Ten years ago, she wasn’t even a runner. So how did this “ordinary woman,” as she calls herself, come to fulfill her dream of completing the race that includes a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride, and then a full, 26.2-mile marathon? “I guess in reality, it has been an ultimate dream of mine,” the 43-year-old Mu Chapter (Drury University) alumna said. “I would watch IRONMAN races on TV and think, ‘I can do that.’ But at the same time, never in a million years did I think it would actually be me doing it.” Her journey to finally “doing it” began in 2003 when Kathy became the volunteer race director for the St. Louis Race for the Cure. At that point, she had never even run a 5K, but knew she would have to start running, if only to help with the logistics of putting on the race. From there, Kathy didn’t stop, eventually working her way up to regular triathlons.
“I’m not an ordinary athlete; I’m a normal person,” she said. “I’m not the fastest, but I knew I could do it.” In April 2011, Kathy, who now lives in Georgia, began working with a trainer to prepare, first for a half IRONMAN, then the full race, which she completed in Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 26, 2012. Training consisted of running, swimming and biking anywhere from 10-18 hours per week—tasks she had to fit into her already busy personal and work schedules. She even joined two different race mentor groups to help herself prepare. One of these groups was called Left, Right, Repeat—a mantra she ended up writing on her forearm before the race to remind herself to keep moving forward. Standing by the banks of the Ohio River on race morning, ready to begin her swim, Kathy was nervous to the point of nausea. Then, almost as quickly as the gun sounded, nervousness turned into determination. “I tried not to focus on what I was doing,” she said. “My whole thing was not to be the fastest, but to just keep moving forward. You break the race up and move on to the next thing. You wonder what’s around the next corner. Where are you going to see your family on the course? What is the next thing you are going to see?” Over 15 hours after she began, Kathy finally saw what she had waited so many years to see.
Kathy Vogt Thuneman takes in the scenic 112-mile bike ride during the IRONMAN triathlon.
“You see the lights, you hear the music, you hear the crowd, and you think, ‘Here I am. I’m coming,’” Kathy said of the Louisville finish line that takes participants down Fourth Street,

All the hard work, dedication, sweat, early mornings and pain just go away because you accomplished your goal. Then when you cross the finish line, you just…die.” Immediately after finishing, Kathy’s main focus was not celebration, but getting her body back in order. She was dehydrated and in desperate need to take off her shoes. It wasn’t until the next day that being an IRONMAN, actually hit her. “I look back, and it has been a journey—a very magical one,” Kathy said. “A lot of it didn’t have to do with working out. It is meeting new people, testing the limits of your body, as well as having the pride and love of the people who are supporting you.” Is another IRONMAN in Kathy’s future? Someday. In the meantime, she is still clinging to her mantra of forward progression. After all, she does have another half marathon to run in November.

From the Archives
Early new members left impact on ZTA By Susan Beard, ΔΨ Patricia Cords Levitte, ΒΦ Archives Committee Co-Chairmen All Zetas learn about our Founders during new member education. But other than those nine visionary young women, many do not know about the other early Zetas who had an influence on plotting the path ZTA followed. Allow us to introduce you to Grace Elcan Garnett and Bruce Houston Davis. Did you know ZTA came very close to having 10 Founders? It was only by unfortunate chance that the potential tenth Founder was not included in the organizing meetings in fall 1898. Grace Elcan Garnett knew of the plans to establish the organization, but was not enrolled at the State Female Normal School that fall semester, due to illness in her family. Despite being close friends with Maud Jones Horner, Maud had very specific ideas on who could be considered an official Founder, and presence at those early meetings was necessary. Grace became a Zeta—one of our first new members—on March 3, 1899, just five months after ZTA was established. Beyond her status as an early new member, Grace was able to help ZTA behind the scenes. Not only did a family friend gift Grace with the original engraved charter for Alpha Chapter, her family’s political connections enabled ZTA to receive a charter from the Virginia State Legislature. According to The History of Zeta Tau Alpha, Grace put together a country barbecue for Senate candidate Frank Moon’s campaign at her family home, described as “a kind of all day picnic with Brunswick stew and barbecued squirrels.” In exchange, she was able to extract a promise from Mr. Moon—to bring a bill chartering Zeta Tau Alpha following his election. Grace’s political ambitions for ZTA ended with the passage of ZTA’s Bill of Incorporation on March 15, 1902. While she didn’t hold ZTA national offices after

In fact, she was a member of Maud’s wedding party on June 29, 1904, while most other Zetas were at ZTA’s second Convention on that date. Anna Bruce Houston Davis was another early member of Alpha Chapter who had a great deal of influence in shaping the direction of the Fraternity. Bruce (she never went by her first name) was initiated on Oct. 21, 1899, in Alpha Chapter’s second new member class. According to The History of Zeta Tau Alpha, “perhaps no one person has played a greater role in the development of Zeta Tau Alpha than Bruce Houston Davis, whose guardianship of and ambition for the Fraternity during her long regime led to our becoming national.” Bruce served in a variety of offices, starting as the first Grand SecretaryTreasurer in 1902. She also edited the first issue of Themis, published in 1903, and became Grand President in 1904. By 1905, Bruce began focusing on expansion
outside of Virginia and made the first attempt to gain ZTA’s membership in the National Panhellenic Conference. To pursue this goal, she made the difficult decision to close chapters at schools that did not meet NPC’s qualifications—including Alpha and Eta Chapters—helping ZTA finally attain NPC membership in 1909. Bruce’s connections also helped start some of ZTA’s earliest chapters, including Zeta, Theta, Kappa and Lambda. Her long-range planning set the course for cautious growth in ZTA’s first decade, and gave us many fraternity procedures still used today, such as a corrected version of the Ritual. Bruce also served as Grand Historian, Grand Vice President and as one of the first Province Presidents. We hope to introduce you to more pioneering Zetas in the coming months, so you can see that it took many visionary women to create the foundation for the strong organization we belong to today.

Founders’ Day Proclamation 2012 Researchers believe that we each make 35,000 decisions every day, ranging from what time to get up to whether we can be of service to others who may need our help. Of those decisions, how many reflect who you want to be? In 1898, no doubt our Founders’ faced fewer decisions in their slower-paced lifestyle. But, when faced with the most important decision of their young lives, they knew who they wanted to be and they used their values as their guide. The History of Zeta Tau Alpha records that during one of the group’s first meetings at the Normal School, the “undignified attitude” of one young woman “met the instant displeasure of the rest of the participants.” When Zeta Tau Alpha was founded, she was not invited to join. Our Founders made the conscious decision that
ZTA members would have a “seriousness of purpose and exude dignity.” Today, our 159 collegiate chapters successfully recruit outstanding new members based on those same values. As we move into our 114th year, your National Council encourages every ZTA, from new members to White Violet alumnae, to live our Founders’ ideals. Always seek noblest and you will become the best version of yourself. In setting high standards, the Founders also sought women who were “congenial.” That word is used frequently throughout The History. It speaks to their intentions that ZTA would be a friendly, welcoming and warm social organization. On Founders’ Day and throughout this year, we hope you will celebrate our congenial sisterhood with new friends and old. Remember always that
the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha is Love, the greatest of all things. Given under my hand and seal, I proclaim the fifteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord, two thousand and twelve, as our 114th Founders’ Day.
