從2019年末起，新冠肺炎疫情衝擊全球，戲劇界亦飽受其影響，如本團不少製作和戲劇教育活動也被迫取消或延期。然而，在種種 防疫措施實行之下，話劇團即使未能在劇場與觀眾見面，我們仍設法以各種可行的途徑，讓戲劇不離大眾的生活，包括在網上推 出「香港話劇團戲寶重溫」和首度直播主劇場製作《原則》，在社交媒體發放因應疫情而策劃的「有文字你send來•不『疫』樂乎」 短篇文本創作召集，以及本團演員主創的「Art From Home」正能量短片等。為了劇藝傳承，我們更以網上研討會模式舉行「有一種 未來叫紀錄 —— 表演藝術紀錄與發表國際交流會」。籌備經年的音樂劇《大狀王》最終雖未能如期上演，但我們亦照常排練，務求日 後演出時，以最優質的製作與大家分享。 當然，科技縱先進，也難以取替表演藝術獨有的現場感。因此，新劇季以「戲劇•回歸生活」為主題，首要期望就是疫情盡快消退， 讓社會各界狀況復常，同時希望戲劇重投大眾的懷抱，以好戲撫慰世道人心。頂尖的製作也將回歸舞台：本團桂冠導演毛俊輝教授 除再參演《父親》外，更會執導史特林堡名著《往大馬士革之路》，更有挪威好戲《霜遇》和韓國得獎作品《大象陰謀》，加上由我翻 譯及導演的音樂劇經典《錦繡良緣》，絕對是重量級的組合。除了介紹優質的海外戲劇，話劇團亦不忘推動本土劇作的初心，包括 上一季未能演出的原創劇《美麗團員大結局》、鄭國偉的新作《曖昧》，以及他跟話劇團合作的首個作品 —— 於2005年首演的原創音 樂劇《2月14》。「新戲匠」系列也將再接再厲，在黑盒劇場製作本地新作《西奧》及《匙羮》。最後，我衷心希望大家可以早日回歸正 常及健康的生活，話劇團也致力精益求精，寄望新劇季可成為大家生活上可喜的寄託！
戲劇•回歸生活 Theatre Returns to Life As the year 2019 was ending, COVID-19 struck the world, and the ensuing pandemic wreaked havoc on the theatre world. We reluctantly postponed or cancelled a number of HKRep productions, along with theatre education and outreach activities. Despite pandemic controls limiting our presence on stage and restricting physical proximity with our audience, we used other means to ensure that theatre would never be far from public life. For example, we offered HKRep classics online and livestreamed our Main Stage production of Principle. We even launched a creative writing contest on social media, encouraging the public to submit their stories about COVID-19 that could be read or performed. Our company of actors also made a series of short creative videos — “Art From Home” — emitting positive energy to motivate the public. In order to guarantee that our theatrical heritage continues to thrive, we hosted “A Future Called Documentation: International Exchange on Performing Arts Documentation” as a webinar. Although The Impossible Trial, the musical we have been developing for a number of years, has yet to officially appear on stage, we continued our rehearsals knowing that when we unveil this production, it will be presented at the highest level. Technology may have advanced our lives in leaps and bounds, but it can never replace the performing arts’ unique sense of living in the moment. Thus, we have chosen “Theatre Returns to Life” as this season’s theme. First and foremost, we hope the pandemic will quickly recede, so that all walks of life can return to normality. At the same time, it is our fervent hope that the public will embrace the theatre again. Good theatre is the best antidote for our heart and soul. This season will feature our finest productions: HKRep’s Director Laureate Fredric Mao not only reprises his role in Le Père, but also returns to direct Strindberg’s classic To Damascus, Part One. We also present Winter from Norway and the award-winning Korean drama That’s Not True. Last but not least, a Cantonese version of the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof (translated and directed by yours truly) will make this full season a tour de force. Apart from introducing fine dramas from abroad, we are dedicated to promoting local works, among them the original play The Finale of Mr. AD (postponed from last season), Matthew Cheng’s new work Ambiguous, and an original musical entitled February 14 stemming from Cheng’s collaboration with our company in 2005. Two local works will also grace our Open Platform series in our Black Box: Theo and The Spoon. Finally, from the depths of my heart, I wish that we can all resume normal and healthy life in the near future. Her father, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, vacillates between a humorous disposition and states of confusion. “Reality” gradually dissolves in his mind, challenging their father-daughter relationship. Shouldering filial love and her responsibility to family, Anne is under tremendous pressure to make the “appropriate” decision. Can her father regain control of his own spirit and decide his own fate at the last moments of his life? Le Père is the work of one of France’s most popular playwrights, Florian Zeller, and winner of the 2014 Molière Award for Best Play. Its Hong Kong premiere in 2017 and re-run in 2019 enjoyed a 30-performance sold-out run, garnering four accolades at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards for Best Director (Tragedy/Drama), Best Actor (Tragedy/Drama), Best Lighting Design, as well as Outstanding Production of the Year. Told from the personal perspective, To Damascus chronicles a journey of self-discovery epitomizing the struggle between man and fate, love, religion and his own ego, laying bare the protagonist’s ups and downs as he refuses to let go of himself. Swedish playwright August Strindberg was a pioneer of European Expressionism, adept at creating a fantastic milieu where monologue, imagination and dreamscape suspend in that grey area between reality and dreams, creating an illusion that stands between truth and untruth. Strindberg’s maverick spirit upended an entire generation’s creativity and aesthetics. Fredric Mao directs this production with HKRep veteran Chris Sun in the role of the Stranger, and the cast of To Damascus, Part One includes guest artists Louisa So and Amy Wu. The local theatre scene eagerly anticipates this Hong Kong premiere that will surely push the boundary of our horizons.

As the head of a family, Tevye faces the sad fate of seeing his home being taken away, disappointing his wife and children and losing his ancestral pride. Yet he continues to nurture hope for the future, affirmed by love and perseverance. This long-running Broadway musical received a total of nine Tony awards (including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Musical Score, Best Director of a musical and Best Choreographer) and was made into a film in 1971. The musical numbers therein have since become well-loved tunes — among them “Sunrise, Sunset”, “Matchmaker”, “If I were a Rich Man” and “Tradition”—touching the whole world. Notes on Ticketing and Venue
■ Patrons are reminded to check their tickets before transaction completed or leaving the ticketing outlet. ■ No refund can be made once the ticket is sold.
■ To avoid interrupting the performers and audience, late-comers will NOT be admitted until intermission or a suitable break. The management also reserves the right to refuse admission of any late-comers and audience members who leave the auditorium.
■ Limited discounted tickets for students and senior citizens age 60 and above are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Concessionary ticket holders (including full-time students, senior citizens age 60 and above and people with disabilities) will be required to present legal / official proof of identity / age at admission. ■ Tickets for wheelchair zone will be available at URBTIX.
■ For productions staged at the HKRep Black Box, please contact us before purchasing ticket if wheelchair seat is required. (Tel: 3103 5900) ■ Children under 6 will not be admitted.
■ Some of the lowest-priced tickets may have restricted view.
■ A certain number of seats for each programme will be reserved for anti-epidemic measures or technical use. ■ HKRep reserves the right to change programme, seating arrangement and artists / performers.
