The capriciousness of the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years has plunged our society to its depths, and the HKRep also experienced its share of hardship, when many of our productions were forced to cancel. Fortunately, our entire team is united in overcoming countless difficulties. We not only fulfill our duties but also remain spirited and passionate in planning the 45th anniversary season of the HKRep. This season, with the theme “Together in Theatre”, we have invited many friends with ties to the HKRep to join us in bringing new works as well as iconic masterpieces by noted local playwrights onto the stage.

In celebration of the Hong Kong City Hall 60 th anniversary and 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, we programme distinguished Hong Kong playwright Raymond To’s Love à la Zen with its humorous look at truths about love and impermanence. The play’s 1996 premiere was among the Top Ten Popular Productions at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. Our new production will be directed by HKRep Assistant Artistic Director Fung Wai Hang. The career of former HKRep resident playwright He Jiping catapulted because of The Top Restaurant, a play chronicling a century-old Peking duck restaurant establishment. This masterpiece in contemporary realism appears for the first time at the HKRep, directed by former HKRep Associate Director Roy Szeto with former HKRep principal actor Tse Kwan Ho leading the cast! We also welcome the return of February 14 – a musical written by Matthew Cheng with music by Chung Chi Wing. This light-hearted romantic tale, in a new co-production with the a cappella choral theatre company Yat Po Singers, will usher in a breath of fresh air. On the new-works front, The Impossible Trial – a musical, after numerous revisions, refinements and pandemic delays, will finally grace the stage! Co-presented and co-produced by the HKRep and Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District, the long-awaited production combines spellbinding suspense with song and dance, embodying both art and entertainment in equal measure. In addition, Hong Kong’s renowned playwright Poon Wai Sum’s black comedy Confrontations delves deep into the meaning of life, with Poon as director ensuring his brand of humour will permeate everything on stage. I will direct All Good Things, a story following the ups and downs of a Chinese restaurant in the 1970s and 1980s in a nostalgic look at our hometown. As a professional theatre company, we adhere to the principle of “balanced repertoire”, including importing international works that extend our audience’s vista, and Sœurs —our season-opener—is a great example. Playwright Pascal Rambert—also a theatre and film director, writer and choreographer—will direct his story about two sisters at loggerheads, unearthing memories and tragedies of one family. It is our mission to nurture the new generation of Hong Kong playwriting talents. Our Black Box presents two productions under the auspices of The Open Platform—Rose of Nightingale and The Precious One—offering opportunities for younger artists to mount their creations on stage! We are also delighted that HKRep’s own company members pursue their artistic paths in diverse ways. After the success of Good Things Going, Mercy Wong pens Female Nº7, rising to challenges and sharing her insights from a uniquely female perspective. Filled with heartfelt emotions and utter honesty, Female Nº7 will premiere in our Black Box this season! Our 45th season offers exciting and exhilarating productions for all to savour. I hope that the pandemic will soon pass, and that performances can take place as scheduled, so our company can continue to scale new heights.

After years of dating Jing, Sau disappears. Tired of the mundane world, he enters a monastery where his friend Master Chi Yuen presides. Roger studies business in the United States, yet he feels the creative pull of the theatre arts. Sometime in the 1970s while on summer vacation, he worked at his uncle’s Orchid Garden Restaurant, hoping to reenter the fresh orbit of Hong Kong life. He runs into many problems with his job, but these encounters teach him essential life lessons. His uncle’s business philosophy and generosity also give him hope, equipping the young man with determination to forge ahead through disappointing times.

Ever since he was a child, Kwan Yat lives with Granny. After he enters university and moves into a dormitory, she is left alone at home, living only with her memories. Granny may appear strong, yet behind her banter is an immeasurable sense of emptiness. Hot soups and tasty dishes accompany every heartfelt reunion, symbols of both love and care. Wary of Granny suffering in solitude, Kwan Yat makes a plan to help her, step by step. Although the conversations between Granny and grandson seem ordinary, both characters are well aware that time is cruel. Kwan Yat hopes that Granny can fulfill her dream in her limited time left…

Management also reserves the right to refuse admission of any latecomers and audience members who leave the auditorium. ■ Limited discounted tickets for students and senior citizens age 60 and above are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Concessionary ticket holders who cannot provide proof of identity must settle the difference between discount and full price and be liable for handling charges. ■ Tickets for wheelchair zone will be available during public sales.

Book 2 programmes of Season 2022-23 to enjoy a free Pals membership. The membership period is valid from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. Member benefits include:

5% Discount on Courses and Workshops
Pals members and their children can enjoy 5% discount on joining courses and workshops presented by HKRep Drama School.
REGISTER FOR FREE FOR “GREEN PALS”
HKRep Green Pals is established specifically for audiences under age 26, encouraging and supporting more young theatregoers by providing recent graduates with discount ticket offers. Annual memberships are valid from 1 April to 31 March the following year. Applications are currently open in two timeslots:

2nd application period: 1-31.10.2022 • Free Membership
Those eligible for membership need only apply once. Membership terminates at the end of the annual cycle (31 March) after the member turns 26 . Digital membership cards automatically renew annually and are distributed via email during a valid membership. Green Pals membership is free. We welcome members under the age of 26 currently engaged in employment from all walks of life.

Just visit www.hkrep.com/greenpals, fill out the application form to register. Your enrollment will be processed within 4 weeks. Exclusive 30% off for standard tickets during public sales (Not applicable to Early Bird Booking or co-presented programme). No proof of membership is needed for transactions. Green Pals discounted ticket holder will be required to present valid membership card at admission, anyone who cannot provide such proof must settle the difference between discount and full price and be liable for handling charges.
1) Via Online Application
When purchasing tickets for 2 or more programmes in a single transaction through POPTICKET, you can register to join HKRep Pals at the same time. Ticket buyers may also complete the online Pals membership application form at www.hkrep.com/pals2223 and upload the image of tickets of 2 different programmes.
2) By Post or Fax
Please complete the Pals membership application form and return it to us together with the photocopy of tickets of 2 different programmes either by fax to 2815 5785 or by mail to the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, 4/F, Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building, 345 Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong. 3) At HKRep’s Reception Desk during Performances
Please contact staff members of HKRep for Pals membership application form at reception desk during performances, and submit your completed form with the photocopy of tickets of 2 different programmes.

PALS APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED ALL YEAR ROUND
Book 2 programmes of Season 2022-23 to enjoy a free Pals membership. The membership period is valid from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. Member benefits include:

Booking discount up to 30% off for purchasing programmes presented by HKRep.
5% Discount on Courses and Workshops
Pals members and their children can enjoy 5% discount on joining courses and workshops presented by HKRep Drama School.
REGISTER FOR FREE FOR “GREEN PALS”
HKRep Green Pals is established specifically for audiences age 26 or under, encouraging and supporting more young theatregoers by providing recent graduates with discount ticket offers. Annual memberships are valid from 1 April to 31 March the following year. Applications are currently open in two timeslots:
Application periods
1st application period: 3-31.5.2022
2nd application period: 1-31.10.2022 • Free Membership
Those eligible for membership need only apply once. Membership terminates at the end of the annual cycle (31 March) after the member turns 26 . Digital membership cards automatically renew annually and are distributed via email during a valid membership. Green Pals membership is free. We welcome members age 26 or under currently engaged in employment from all walks of life.

Just visit www.hkrep.com/greenpals, fill out the application form to register. Your enrollment will be processed within 4 weeks. Exclusive 30% off for standard tickets during public sales (Not applicable to Early Bird Booking or co-presented programme). No proof of membership is needed for transactions. Green Pals discounted ticket holder will be required to present valid membership card at admission, anyone who cannot provide such proof must settle the difference between discount and full price and be liable for handling charges.
1) Via Online Application
When purchasing tickets for 2 or more programmes in a single transaction through POPTICKET, you can register to join HKRep Pals at the same time. Ticket buyers may also complete the online Pals membership application form at www.hkrep.com/pals2223 and upload the image of tickets of 2 different programmes.
2) By Post or Fax
Please complete the Pals membership application form and return it to us together with the photocopy of tickets of 2 different programmes either by fax to 2815 5785 or by mail to the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, 4/F, Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building, 345 Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong. Application form can be downloaded at our website: www.hkrep.com/pals
3) At HKRep’s Reception Desk during Performances
Please contact staff members of HKRep for Pals membership application form at reception desk during performances, and submit your completed form with the photocopy of tickets of 2 different programmes.
