Building Maintenance Operations Level 2

Skills-based learning in a wide range of construction trades including brickwork, plumbing, paving, carpentry, painting and decorating.

This course offers a wide variety of practical workshop and classroom theory sessions with the emphasis on ‘learning by doing’ at its heart. Our purpose-built, specialist workshops offer the very latest in equipment and facilities, essential for the practical elements of this varied and exciting course. Site visits and real project briefs give you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learnt. The broad range of skills developed will also enable progression into further study as an apprentice or straight into the workplace. You will cover smallscale repairs in various trades in the construction sector, including brickwork, paving, painting and decorating, plastering, plumbing and carpentry. Health and safety as well as general theory units are also included to provide you with the knowledge and expertise required in the construction industry.

Qualification City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance Operations

Duration One year

Course Content A selection of unit titles is shown below. • Health, Safety & Welfare • Principles of Building Construction, Information & Communication • Small-scale repairs in the areas of General Building, Painting & Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing & Carpentry

Achievement is by assessment of practical and theory units including online multiple-choice, paper-based and practical tests. All full-time students will be required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Please see page 6 for more details.

Entry Requirements • Four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above (to include maths and English) or successful and satisfactory completion of a suitable and relevant Level 1 qualification (e.g. Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing, Carpentry or Brickwork) • Alternatively, applicants who can evidence suitable experience or aptitude will also be considered • Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

Employment options may include: • General Builder (Trainee) • Handyman/Caretaker • Site Operative (Labourer)

Study options may include: • Level 2 Apprenticeship in Building Maintenance Operations • Level 1 or 2 in Plumbing/Electrical Installation/Furniture Making/ Bricklaying/Carpentry

Course Content You will gain practical skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to your chosen apprenticeship and job role in the workplace, including: • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction • Carrying out repairs to the fabric of buildings, for example repairs to walls and doors • Understanding and maintaining plumbing and drainage systems • Maintaining high levels of water hygiene within a building • Understanding and maintaining electrical distribution, and the safe repair of electrical installation • Demonstrating and implementing energy, environment and sustainable practices • Understanding and maintaining grounds and external fabrication of a building

Duration and Attendance You will spend most of your time in the workplace, employed as an apprentice, and you will be released by your employer to attend college for training one day a week. It will take around 2 years to complete the Level 2 apprenticeship.
