Motor Vehicle Level 3

Explore the diagnosis of complex faults in engines, chassis and electrical systems using the latest diagnostic scan-tools, rolling road, wheel alignment systems and MOT facilities.

You will be using your keen interest in this industry and your theoretical problem solving skills to work in our extensive purpose-built workshops. Using our modern diagnostic scan tools, rolling road, wheel alignment systems, MOT facilities, and dedicated classrooms, you will test and repair a range of vehicles and diagnose complex system faults. This Level 3 qualification covers the technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry, focusing on the diagnosis of complex faults in engines, chassis and electrical systems. It covers the full range of technologies relating to hybrids, electric, common rail diesel and direct injection petrol systems, and provides essential knowledge for diagnostic technicians working on light vehicles in race teams, garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. On successful completion of this course you will be well-equipped to follow various routes into industry and onto some relevant university-level courses. This qualification is also one of the prerequisites (along with appropriate industrial experience) for the L2 Award in MOT Testing.

Qualification IMI Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance Principles

Duration One year

Course Content You will study both the theoretical and practical aspects of the knowledge, diagnosis and rectification of: • Light Vehicle Transmission System Faults • Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults • Light Vehicle Engine Faults • Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults

You will be evaluated by successful completion of practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, online multiple-choice testing and assessments. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Please see page 6 for more details.

Entry Requirements • Successful completion of the IMI Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair • Successful interview and initial assessment • You will need to demonstrate an enthusiasm for this subject area

Progression There are various opportunities for further study or employment upon successful completion of your course.

Duration and Attendance You will spend most of your time in the workplace, employed as an apprentice, and you will be released by your employer to attend college for training one day a week. It will take around 2 years to complete the L2 Apprenticeship and a further 2 years to complete the Level 3 Apprenticeship.
