The animal care department offers a wealth of experience for students hoping to progress to employment in the sector or for those wishing to study related subjects at university.

The Animal Care Unit is a valuable resource for students and houses a wide range of animals ranging from exotics such as chameleon and tortoises, to rodents such as hamsters and degus. Students learn a great deal from working practically with the animals and are able to apply their theoretical work to a real animal care environment.

Careers Week is an exciting event that gives students the chance to gain an insight into their employment sector. Industry experts are invited to talk to students about their job roles, including how they got to where they are, what they enjoy (as well as what they don’t), and what they recommend to students who are looking to specialise.

In addition to their studies and practical work on the Animal Care Unit, students go on all sorts of trips and visits. In the past these have included Crufts, Crocodiles of the World, Oxford Natural History Museum, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and an inspirational visit to Wolf Watch UK.

As well as all of this, our students take part in valuable work experience placements within the animal care industry including:

• K9 Cares Ltd Doggy Daycare • Vets4Pets • Rainforest Exotics • Cats Protection • General Dogsbody • Wye Valley Vets • Houghton Project • Riding for the Disabled
