Agriculture/Animal Care – Land-based Studies Level 1
This course will give you a foundation level insight into agriculture, animal care and management. It aims to prepare you for future education or employment within the animal sector, with a mixture of classroom and practical-based sessions as well as visits from guest speakers and trips.
Modules incorporate practical and classroom elements across the Walford Campus including the Harris Centre Animal Care Unit, Equine Unit and Walford Dairy Farm. Students will gain valuable experience in basic aspects of countryside, agriculture, equestrian and animal management skills by building a portfolio of evidence and practical assessment.

The course is very practical and hands-on with plenty of opportunities to develop your skills in a practical environment. There are a variety of external visits which form part of your study programme and you will be appointed a personal tutor for the duration of the course.

Duration One year
Course Content Topics you will cover include: • Animal health and wellbeing • Handling and restraining animals • Preparation and maintenance of accommodation • Safe and effective practices in the workplace • Feeding and watering animals • Industrial experience
Both skills and knowledge are assessed throughout the year by the completion of assignments. You will also complete a period of work experience during the course of the year. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Please see page 8 for more details.

Aged 16 –18 years There are no tuition or examination fees.

Material Fees There is a £180 material fee cost for this course.
Entry Requirements • A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2 or above or an equivalent qualification.
