About HOK

HOK is a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm. Our 1,600 people collaborate across a network of 26 offices on three continents. HOK designs buildings and spaces that respond to the needs of people and the environment. Our designers are rooted in technical excellence, driven by imagination and focused on a solitary goal: to deliver solutions that inspire clients and communities.

COMPANY HISTORY

HOK traces its roots back to 1949, when Co-Founder George Hellmuth joined two partners to form the architectural firm Hellmuth, Yamasaki and Leinweber. When that partnership dissolved in 1955, Mr. Hellmuth recruited two of his star employees—design deputy Gyo Obata and production deputy George Kassabaum – to lead a new fledgling practice based in St. Louis, Missouri, and bearing the names of the three gentlemen. Advocating diversity in terms of clients building types, services and locations, their vision positioned HOK remarkably well to adapt to the changing global landscape which has grown to become the world’s highest ranked international design firm.

The new IU/IUH Bloomington Regional Academic Health Campus (IUHB), serving the southern Indiana region, will provide acute care, ambulatory and diagnostic and treatment services.

The IU Health Bloomington Hospital at the RAHC creates an innovative solution to twin needs. It provides southern Indiana residents with the latest in medical care and ensures future caregivers have the training they need to solve tomorrow’s health challenges.

HOK’s Healthcare and Healthcare Consulting teams worked with IU Health and Indiana University to identify a new hospital location that fosters community connections and bolsters existing relationships with the university’s health science programs. The 50-acre site adjacent to Indiana University’s flagship Bloomington campus connects to major arterial roadways, public transit and local bicycle and walking paths that encourage active and healthy transportation.

The 810,000-sq.-ft. facility, designed in collaboration with CSO, MSKTD, Cripe, and Guidon Design, consists of two main programs: a 185-bed acute care hospital and ambulatory care building and a connected medical education hub. The new hospital includes 14 operating rooms, a cancer center, an obstetrics and gynecology program, a behavioral health program and a robust ambulatory wellness program with both specialists and generalists. The educational building provides undergraduate and graduate students with advanced, real-world training in various health programs, including medicine, nursing, social work, speech and hearing.

INDIANA INSPIRED

The design of the facility employs a modern and fresh interpretation of the Indiana University and IU Health brands using glass, metal and regional limestone that blends into the surrounding academic campus. The project’s landscape architecture incorporates local and natural materials, such as native plantings and stone, that benefit and meld with existing habitats. Consultation with

HOK - 2023 BJC Toolbox Qualifications | 10

a local arborist led to the preservation of 405 trees that influenced site circulation, parking and landscape design.

The natural palette continues throughout the interior of the facility. A mixture of woods, terrazzo and environmentally friendly materials present themselves in classic details. Artwork by local artists emphasizes southern Indiana’s beautiful landscapes and reinforces a sense of place.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

The design embraces the healing power of natural light and nature. Therapeutic gardens are beautifully framed and provide places of respite for staff, patients and visitors. Adjustable air temperature and lighting systems, outdoor views and noise-suppression materials in patients rooms help people feel comfortable during their stay.

SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE

Designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, the facility reduces the environmental impact in multiple ways. Passive and active design strategies combined to show a 30 percent reduction in annual energy consumption from the baseline standard, with the building anticipated to save $400,000 in annual operational energy costs per year.

To ensure that the building remains relevant and useful well into the future, the design prioritized a standardized structural grid, 30-year building systems, a robust technology infrastructure, and open-ended edges to accommodate future expansion. Design alterations informed by COVID-19 were implemented during construction to help the building respond to possible future pandemics.

Looking to serve a growing suburban and rural population in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Saint Francis Health System tasked HOK with expanding and renovating their South Hospital. This 102-patient bed tower opened in 2008 and will continue to serve the community with excellent patient care with the upgrades HOK plans to implement.

The updated hospital will include a new 122-bed tower, eight additional operating rooms and renovations to surgery services, consolidation of pre-and post-anesthesia units, inpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation services expansion, a new main hospital lobby and a corridor connecting the patient bed tower with the emergency department and parking garage.

The expansion and renovation will generate a sense of connection between the main hospital campus and the new addition designs to create a seamless blend while maintaining the integrity of the original concept and layout.

HOK had the opportunity to significantly contribute to the existing facility while improving patients’ experience. To achieve this goal, HOK made a clear distinction between the Public at the front and the Staff at the back of the site. These sites are strategically located so that the new entry and patient tower face out onto the building approach. This innovative design allows patients to visualize their experience as they enter the building.

In addition, the surgery and logistics spaces are added at the back of the site to separate busy activities and traffic from the Public. In addition, another goal is maintaining a strict schedule during the construction phase. This is being successfully accomplished by working closely and productively with the Construction Manager. As a result, the overall number of phases has been minimized in order to move along the project as promptly and efficiently as possible.

Providing therapeutic emergency environments designed for crisis mental healthcare leads to rapid improvement and decreased need for inpatient care. ED patients are often boarded without treatment for long hours awaiting inpatient beds when prompt, appropriate care would result in discharge for most affected individual.

While the healthcare industry is continuously adapting to modern practices, increased patient volume and systemic change have created a crisis for emergency departments and those suffering from emergent mental illnesses.

Emergency environments designed for crisis mental healthcare result in rapid improvement and a decreased need for inpatient care. With patient care and organization at the forefront of design, this master plan elevates a 90-bed inpatient facility to a 150-bed behavioral health campus to meet the developing need for innovative urgent psychiatric care.

The existing administration building received a renovation to accommodate new models of care. The new campus provides four 15-bed units that accommodate growth as patient volume increases. The campus is divided into several parts: the intake building, which includes a behavioral health crisis stabilization unit and a clinical assessment department. The intake building is renovated and expanded to improve admission flow.

The behavioral health crisis stabilization unit supplies compassionate care for psychiatric emergencies. It helps contain most crises in less than 24 hours while improving general emergency department capacity and length of stay.

Elements that improve overall patient care and site logistics include inpatient care, materials management, art therapy, a fitness center, a kitchen, staff and inpatient dining.

HOK - 2023 BJC Toolbox Qualifications | 18

In addition, the vehicular sally-port supports patient security and provides privacy, while the new, on-site staff parking garage creates more patient/visitor parking for the outpatient clinic.

As part of a continuum of care between an acute setting and psychiatric inpatient care, HOK’s creative and strategic design solved an emerging healthcare issue affecting hospitals nationwide while also upholding the best patient care.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CRISIS UNITS

Appropriate emergency department utilization and focusing on care of those in actual need of emergency care has been a systematic problem for many years. Increasing volume of emergency departments (ED) presentations for urgent psychiatric care has brought real pressures to ED operations and challenging populations to patient

caseloads. This combination of systemic change in care models coupled with an increased volume has created a crisis for both emergency departments and for the care of those suffering from emergent mental illness.

Providing therapeutic emergency environments designed for crisis mental healthcare leads to rapid improvement and decreased need for inpatient care. ED patients are often boarded without treatment for long hours awaiting inpatient beds when prompt, appropriate care would result in discharge for most affected individual. ED behavioral health crisis Stabilization units help to stabilize most crisis in less than 24 hours, improving general ED capacity, length of stay and throughput.

The Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center represents a first-of-it-kind facility and a novel new partnership between UCCS and Centura Health.

R esearchers are translating science into better performance at a new sports-medicine hybrid facility at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). The Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center represents a first-of-it-kind facility and a novel new partnership between UCCS and Centura Health. Both UCCS and Centura are benefiting from the seamless, real-time connections taking place between researchers, medical professionals, trainers, athletes and faculty members. Students are benefitting, too, through experiential learning and access to cutting-edge training tools and resources.

This is an example of a new type of higher-ed hybrid facility that brings together different departments—such as sports and health—in a shared footprint. To create these multipurpose facilities, schools partner with private organizations and institutions in an integrated approach that shares costs and knowledge while jointly pursuing new discoveries.

Spaces in the Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center include altitude and environmental chambers; a nutrition lab and kitchen; a biomechanics lab; specialized training equipment for athletes with physical disabilities as well as firefighters and police officers; a sports medicine clinic; and a sports performance clinic. Flexible space supports telehealth rooms. Overhead doors on the second floor connect a tactical simulation gym to a 4,000-sq.-ft. outdoor training area on the roof of the first floor.

HOK - 2023 BJC Toolbox Qualifications | 20

The Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center promotes the concept of “exercise as medicine.” Performance data recorded at the center helps research teams and clinicians develop protocols that prevent injuries and develop strategies for healthy living.

The design team created intentional “collision” spaces that enhance collaboration among the doctors, faculty researchers and students. These include a café open to the public, a 150-seat auditorium and small seating areas for spontaneous interaction. A monumental architectural stair connects the building’s four floors.

An administrative suite on the second floor gives other organizations and departments opportunities to lease space within the facility, fostering collaboration between public and private entities.

The brick- and metal-clad facility has a four-story, glass-enclosed entry. During the day, this window wall offers views of Pikes Peak to the west. At night, the high-performance glazing creates a lantern effect that offers passersby view of the activity taking place inside.

The steeply sloped site enabled the design team to place several program elements on two different pedestrian levels. The main student entrance is on the second floor of the east side, while the sports performance entry is at grade on the west side. Behind the building, a grassy knoll adjacent to the café links to the campus and provides space for casual gatherings.

The team designed the Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center for LEED Gold certification. High-performance building systems enhance occupant wellness and optimize energy and water use.

The Lauritzen Outpatient Center at The Nebraska Medical Center represents a major move forward in care provision for Omaha and integrates all surgical outpatient specialties under one roof. Anchored by 12 outpatient surgical suites, the building includes flexible clinic space with universal exam room layouts. The center will comprise almost 200,000 square feet of clinical space, and structured parking underneath the building.

In addition, it includes four radiological modalities as well as co-located orthopedic clinics and PT/ OT space. The layout is based on optimizing patient flow and reducing wait times through LEAN principles.

As the project is on an accelerated schedule, a 3P “Production, Preparation, Process” LEAN exercise sped up the design phases in order to meet a specific occupancy date. After developing seven shells and evaluating their suitability for the program, we conducted a three-day charrette with the entire group of stakeholders, including creating full scale room mockups, so that the plan was “set” with almost complete user buy in months earlier than in a traditional design process.
