CORNERS / URBAN OBJECT Theme: Warehouse Date: 2018-2019 Supervisors: Giancarlo Floridi, Zachary Mark, Lunati Angelo Raffaele Collaborators: Chiara Tassinari, Lorenzo Turnaturi Location: Milan, Italy

ARCHITECTURE WITHOUT CONTENT / BIG BOX This urban block located in not in a dense surrounding but have a strong urban connection due to its location next to the bus station and highway. This warehouse aimed to have a strong position in the urban fabric. The project consists of two masses of different sizes where their intersection emphasizing the corner of the plot. Relationship between transparency and solidity reached with the study of materiality, using perforated meshes with different sizes of openings. While during the day, it appears as a solid and closed box, at night, it appears completely transparent. This transparency removes the boundaries with the city and increases the interaction with the surrounding. Due to its large scale, this building aims an “Architecture without Content, which is adaptable to a variety of functions.

PA R I S H C O M P L E X Theme: Church and Parish Complex Date: 2018 Supervisor: Emilio Faroldi, Maria Pilar Vettori Collaborators: Oscar Amicabile, Zeynep KalaycÄąoÄ&#x;lu, Tsubasa Hoshi Location: Milan, Italy

Coexistence of Solidity and Transparency Church and Piazza; they represent worship and socialization respectively. The relationship between the church and piazza works as one function to connect the public and religion. But in physically, they are separated as solid and transparent spaces. Our aim is creating the coexisted space religion and the public by making socialize for church and spiritualize piazza while keeping traditional concept. The existence of the pure forms having no distractive elements lead the sunrays coming inside of the complex without rigidity. This approach of proportions allows visitors to have a full visual control of their experiences. The materiality is reflecting the silence. The physical space of the church is defined by the masses and the spatial distances. The distance is kept differently, in order to have the relationship between the space and the light which supports the visual connection of the masses and create a unique experience of light throughout the project.

PA L M Y R A / L O S T I N T I M E Theme: Urban Redevelopment / After War Architecture Date: 2018 Supervisor: Camillo Magni, Andrea de Matteis Collaborators: Zeynep Kalaycioglu Location: Palmyra, Syria

To build is to inhabit The ancient city of Palmyra had an important role in the history as the locational position of being on the Silk Road. Due to the war, many historical sited has been demolished and suffered due to the intention of not protecting any of the stories has been written to the architecture. As the afterward location now Palmyra has a different statement to the inhabitants. The aim of the project is creating a new approach to the area and re-evaluating the meaning of Palmyra to the local environment is needed. Afterwar approach is the representative of the timeless principle and is explained with the adaptable design of the project that acts as engaging with the community and time because the contemporary project is subjective and valued by the sense of the users. Introducing a new, flexible path that creates a full experience of the site. By expanding the possibilities of the site, it introduced new potentials where the community can engage after the war. This urban re-development generated by 5 projects which all focused on the different aspects of the revival of social life in Palmyra. By avoiding a distinctive architectural style, we encouraged people to adopt this large-scaled structures with the feeling of serenity. ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY FREE- SELF ADAPTIBLE CONSTRUCTIONS

The museum is created by 2 volumes; named as artificial and natural volume. Natural volume is positioned on the ruins of an old temple where the artificial volume intersects with the oasis and the new city. The horizontality of the structures with large proportions gives visitors a timeless experience within nature, ruins and glass structures. which all blend together in a silent matter.

RE-SHAPING MILAN Theme: Residential / Museum Date: 2017 Supervisor: Giulia Setti, Giovanni Bassi, Mario Paris Location: Milan, Italy

Cascina Cuccagna is dated back to 18th century where the site is located. This urban block is shaped according to this old farm house and therefore it is lack of good connectivity with the surrounding and sense of direction. Diversity is something we should have but complexity can lead us to chaos we don’t know how to control. Since the complex is surrounded by different typological elements, it is important to correspond to the urban fabric and create a balance where diverse typoligies corresponds to each other. Space creates the scenography of the atmosphere with surrounding local elements and with people that are the key elements of users. This design consists two main uses as residential and museum. As a result, this project creates a strong and living connection on its future foundation, capable to witness the fertility of the site and the surrounding green promenade.

S TA G G E R E D Theme: Student Housing Date: 2018 Location: Milan, Italy Supervisor: Andrea Tartaglia Collaborators: Tim Perkins, Josh Crook, Neda Georgieva

Our design student housing is formed by 2 complex buildings, designed as a staggered system, Main aim is to adapt different solar explosion for the rooms without facing directly to north. The position of these two different buildings is adapted according to 60-degree rule. The staggered system is adapted only in one faรงade of both buildings to keep the structure stable and make the stair system easily accessible. The different room types provide us different corridor spaces, that also usable for small study/communal areas, which leads to the big common kitchens with balconies. The construction system is based on layers of cross laminated timber, which stands out due to its high load bearing capacity and its dual-axis loadbearing performance. As a result of the lateral load transfer construction components with a lower component height and low net weight can be provided.

RETROFITTING Theme: Retrofitting / Social Housing Date: 2019 - Ongoing Location: Milan, Italy Supervisor: Gennaro Postiglione Collaborators: Iva Rajcevska, Simona Smilkova

The laboratory places particular emphasis on the recovery of existing and often fragile architectural and architectural heritage by interpreting the themes of contemporary living. This project is the transformation of a social housing apartment with bad living conditions. The various analysis had been done, to realize the needs of the people living there, such as not enough space, bad, and heating problems. Retrofitting means the addition of new technology or features to older systems. Realization of the new typologies within the existing structure, allows the users to have double ventilation in their apartments. Different typologies had realized to have flexible housing choices for different families. New skin added to both sides of the block. This external prefabricated structure, allows users to have additional space and also used as an external corridor. This project aims at the same time to improve the existing energy demand by %50 percent. Software called “Open Studio has used for the calculations.
