reetings, It seems that spring has come early this year. Already the live oak trees have shed their old leaves and the fruit trees are in bloom. This is a great time to enjoy the outdoors before the summer heat sets in. We have plans to take our pack to the dog park regularly, ride the bayou bike trails and attend several springtime outdoor events here in Houston. There are flower beds to replant and the garden to prepare. For the second year in a row, Natural Awakenings will be at Earth Day Houston. In all these ways and more we celebrate the renewal of life going on all around us.

We have learned that life comes into our physical body in three main forms: in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air that we breathe. We try to eat healthy by shopping at farmers’ markets, healthy food stores and restaurants that serve healthy, locally sourced food. I have fixed the drippy faucet so we don’t waste water. Metal water bottles have replaced plastic bottled water and we are researching water filtration and rainwater harvesting. On a macro-level, we support organizations like Air Alliance Houston who work to protect the quality of air that we breathe in Houston and, on a personal level, we are regularly practicing pranayama breathing techniques to cleanse and revitalize our own bodies.

There are many activities and events in this month’s calendar and many of them happen outside. There are so many ways you too can “rise as you are willing and able and the Spirit moves you” and celebrate the springtime renewal of life. We hope to have a great month and that we see you around town enjoying life.

3,000 Participants Expected for Houston’s Largest Mental Illness-Focused Event Join others who care about mental health at the 11th annual Houston NAMIWalks, benefitting the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Greater Houston. The family-friendly April 30 event will bring together an expected 3,000 participants for a 5K walk starting at 8:30 a.m. at Sam Houston Park.

“NAMIWalks is the one place every year where thousands of people from across the Greater Houston area come together to say that mental illnesses can and should be treated instead of stigmatized, and to celebrate the recovery that is possible,” said Glenn Urbach, executive director of NAMI Greater Houston.

“At the same time, we honor the lives lost to mental illness and show our commitment to preventing these needless deaths in the future.”

Walk proceeds will fund NAMI Greater Houston’s education classes, support groups and community outreach programs. These services are offered free to individuals and families dealing with both adult and childhood mental illnesses.

“This is our 11th Walk, and we expect it to be our largest yet,” said Urbach. “Past years’ walk proceeds have helped us expand our support programs into nearly all of Harris County and into Montgomery County as well, and to add more programs serving veterans, Spanish-speaking residents, and families of school-age children.”

Kiwis Boost Heart Health

A

multi-center study from the University of Salamanca, in Spain, has found that consuming even one kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) per week will significantly boost cardiovascular health. The researchers tested 1,469 healthy people throughout Spain. The volunteers were given dietary questionnaires and underwent testing for cholesterol lipids and inflammatory markers for heart disease.

The researchers determined that those that ate at least one kiwi fruit per week had significantly lower triglycerides and fibrinogen (a marker for inflammation), and higher HDL-cholesterol levels. Higher levels of HDL-cholesterol are associated with reduced incidence of atherosclerosis.

The researchers concluded: “Consumption of at least one kiwi a week is associated with lower plasma concentrations of fibrinogen and improved plasma lipid profile in the context of a normal diet and regular exercise.”

esearchers from the University of Melbourne determined that taking a quick break and looking at natural colors can significantly increase attention, focus and job performance. The researchers tested 150 university students that were randomly selected to view one of two city scenes consisting of a building with and without a flowering meadow green roof.

The two views were experienced as micro-breaks, a 30-second period that can be taken every 40 minutes. Both groups were tested before and after viewing the scene for sustained attention spans, along with a performance test upon completing a task. Subjects that looked at the scene with the verdant roof had significantly longer attention spans and fewer errors in doing their tasks.

Mercury Use Linked to Dentists’ Tremors

A

study of thousands of dentists found that the absorption of mercury is associated with an increased risk of tremors. Published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, the study followed 13,906 dentists for a 24year period.

The research tested the dentists’ urinary mercury levels to estimate their individual exposure. The incidence of tremors—the involuntary shaking of hands, arms and other parts of the body—among the dentists was then compared with their exposure to mercury.

Higher exposures to mercury increased the risk of tremors among the entire population of dentists studied by 10 percent; the increased risk among the young dentists was 13 percent.

Fracking Fluids Found Toxic to Health

I

n analyzing 1,021 chemicals contained in fluids and wastewater used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for oil or natural gas, a Yale University study found that at least 157 of the chemicals— including arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde and mercury—are associated with either developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity or both.

Of the total identified chemicals, 925 were used in the hydraulic fracturing process, 132 in fracking wastewater and 36 were present in both. The scientists utilized the REPROTOX database in the Chemical Abstract Service registry and then reviewed the available research, including human and animal studies.

Toxicity data wasn’t available for 781 of the chemicals used in fracking.

Among the other 240 chemicals, 103 were reproductive toxins. An additional 95 were developmental toxins. Another 41 have been found to be both reproductive and developmental toxins. The researchers further suggested that at least 67 of the chemicals be prioritized in drinking water testing.

Senior author and Professor of Public Health Nicole Deziel, Ph.D., adds, “This evaluation is a first step to prioritize the vast array of potential environmental contaminants from hydraulic fracturing for future exposure and health studies. Quantification of the potential exposure to these chemicals, such as by monitoring drinking water in people’s homes, is vital for understanding the [associated] public health impact.”

globalbriefs Bee Kind The Good Fight for Honeybees A U.S. federal appeals court has blocked the use of the pesticide sulfoxaflor over concerns about its effect on honeybees, which have been disappearing throughout the country in recent years. “Initial studies showed sulfoxaflor was highly toxic to honeybees, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required to get further tests,” says Circuit Judge Mary Schroeder. “Given the precariousness of bee populations, leaving the EPA’s registration of sulfoxaflor in place risks more potential environmental harm than vacating it.” The product, sold in the U.S. as Transform or Closer, must be pulled from store shelves by October 18.

Paul Towers, a spokesperson for the nonprofit advocacy group Pesticide Action Network, comments, “This is [an example of] the classic pesticide industry shell game. As more science underscores the harms of a pesticide, they shift to newer, less-studied products, and it takes regulators years to catch up.”

On another front, an insect form of Alzheimer’s disease caused by aluminum contamination from pesticides is another suspected contributing cause of the welldocumented widespread bee colony collapse, according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE. Honeybees studied had levels of aluminum in their bodies equivalent to those that could cause brain damage in humans.

Community Initiatives Secure Local Eco-Rights

While America will choose its next president this November, voters in Oregon may also vote on the right to local community self-government, enabling protection of citizens’ fundamental rights and prohibiting corporate activities that violate them. The Oregonians for Community Rights group, formed by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), submitted a constitutional amendment proposal to the secretary of state in January as a prelude to a larger signature-gathering effort to qualify the measure for the state ballot.

Concurrently, the CELDF is supporting other community initiatives on various topics that may inspire other regions to also be active at the grassroots level.

For example, Oregon’s Coos County Protection Council is currently finishing its signature gathering to place a Right to a Sustainable Energy Future ordinance on a special ballot in May. It would protect citizens’ rights to clean air and water and the production of sustainable, localized energy, instead of county approval of several potential non-green energy projects.

Oregon’s Columbia County Sustainable Action for Green Energy is gathering signatures for a Right to a Sustainable Energy Future ordinance for its November ballot that would protect the county from fossil fuel projects like coal and oil trains and a proposed methanol plant, and close two natural gas power plants by 2025. Other state groups are seeking to have November ballots in Lane and Lincoln counties include bans on aerial pesticide spraying. A Lane County group has filed a local food system charter amendment that would ban GMO (genetically modified) crops locally.

“Community rights are driven by the people in the community, not by any organization targeting potential activism,” says Kai Huschke, Northwest and Hawaii community organizer of the CELDF, which has supported 200-plus separate community initiatives. Particularly active states have included New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania. “Organizing typically comes about due to a localized threat. It means settling into a long-term battle to change the structure of government, having resolve and organizing beyond just a ballot vote.”

“The sustainability movement is large and growing in the U.S.,” says Todd Larsen, with Green America, a grassroots nonprofit organization harnessing economic forces to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. “Half a million people turned out in New York City to march for action on climate change. People also are working in their local communities to oppose fracking and pollution, and to support green building and clean energy. Many businesses now include sustainability as a core business practice, including the 3,000 certified members of Green America’s Green Business Network.”

First Steps

“Many people start with something small at home, particularly if they’re concerned about the impacts on their family’s health,” says Larsen.

“More Americans are approaching sustainability first through food. It’s relatively easy to change spending habits to incorporate more organic, fair trade and non-GMO [genetically modified] foods, and with the growth of farmers’ markets nationwide, people are able to buy local more easily.”

A focus on food quality is how Wendy Brown and her husband and five children launched their eco-journey just outside of Portland, Maine. “We started thinking about where our food came from, how it was grown and raised and what we could do to ensure that it was better,” says Brown. “What we don’t grow or forage ourselves, we try to purchase from local farmers.” Living more simply during the past decade has helped the family cut debt and become more financially stable.

“Our entry point to sustainable living was to grow tomatoes on the steps of an apartment that Kelly and I once called home years ago,” echoes Erik Knutzen, who, with his wife Kelly Coyne, have transformed their 960-square-foot Los Angeles bungalow into an oasis where they grow food, keep chickens and bees, brew, bake and house their bikes.

Gabriele Marewski’s journey also started with what she ate. “I became a vegetarian at 14, after reading Diet for a Small Planet, by Frances Moore Lappé,” says Marewski, who in 1999 turned an avocado orchard in Homestead, Florida, into Paradise Farms. “Forty-seven years later, I’m still a strict vegetarian.

I believe it’s the single most important statement we can make about saving the planet.”

“People can make a difference by making responsible choices in their everyday life,” says Anna Nyström Claesson, one of the three original teachers.

“Every step toward sustainability is important and in the right direction,” explains Gina Miresse, with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), which will again host the world’s largest energy fair in June in Custer, Wisconsin.

“It’s easy to start at home by adopting one new practice and sticking with it until it becomes a habit; then add a second practice and so on. This keeps people from getting overwhelmed.”

We might, for example, switch to non-toxic home cleaning products when current products are used up. “There’s no need to throw everything in the trash and replace it all immediately—that would partially defeat the purpose of sustainability,” says Miresse.

products in online publications at GreenAmerica.org, recommends a congruent strategy. “We see people first change the way they purchase their food, move to reduce their purchases overall and green those they make, and then make their home more energy-efficient,” remarks Larsen. “Next, they consider walking and biking more.”

Pamela Dixon explains, “On a day-to-day basis, it’s really about the products we use, like transferring to ecofriendly cleaners and yard maintenance, recycling electronic devices, paying bills electronically and receiving statements via email.” She and her husband, David Anderson, own Dave’s BrewFarm, in rural Wilson, Wisconsin, where they grow herbs, hops, raspberries and apples on 35 acres.

“A 20-kilowatt wind generator supplies our electricity, and we use geothermal for heating and cooling,” adds Dixon. Due to career opportunities involving teaching principles of sustainability, the Wisconsin couple is in the process of selling the BrewFarm to move to La Crosse. “At our new home, we’re replacing the windows and appliances with more energy-efficient ones. We also chose our neighborhood so we can walk or bike to local grocery co-ops. We prefer to repair things when they break rather than buying something new, recycle everything the city will accept, compost food scraps and buy clothes at secondhand stores.”

When the MREA Energy Fair began 27 years ago, the majority of attendees were interested in learning about first steps, such as recycling, relates Miresse.

Today, sustainability basics ranging from fuel savings to water conservation are familiar, and they’re focused on revitalizing local economies. “Folks are now considering more ambitious practices such as sourcing food directly from local farmers, producing their own solar energy and incorporating energy storage, driving an electric vehicle or switching to more socially responsible investing.” The fair’s 250 workshops provide tools to help in taking their next steps on the journey to sustainability.

Knutzen and Coyne’s passion has evolved from growing food into a larger DIY mode. “Cooking from scratch is something I prefer to do,” comments

Knutzen. “I even grind my own flour.”

Library books provide his primary source of inspiration.

The Brown family likely echoes the thoughts of many American families.

“We have many dreams, but the stark reality is that we live in a world that requires money,” says Wendy Brown.

An electric car or solar electric system, for example, is a large investment.

“The biggest barriers were mental blocks because we ‘gave up’ previous lifestyle norms,” she says. “Most people we know have a clothes dryer and can’t imagine living without one. Line-drying is just part of the bigger issue of time management for us, because living sustainably and doing things by hand takes longer.”

Each Day Counts

“The biggest and most positive impact I have comes from my general non-waste philosophy,” advises Brown. “I try to reuse something rather than throwing it away. I’ve made underwear out of old camisoles and pajama pants from old flannel sheets. I reuse elastic from wornout clothing. My travel beverage cup is a sauce jar with a reusable canning lid drilled with a hole for a reusable straw. Such examples show how we live every day.”

Marewski’s love of travel doesn’t interfere with her sustainability quest.

“When I travel, I like to walk or bicycle across countries,” she says. “It gives me

a closer connection to the land and spontaneous contact with interesting people. I’m building a tiny home on wheels that’ll be completely selfsufficient, with solar, composting toilet and water catchment to reduce my footprint even further.”

“Last August, I started a tenuretrack position in the school of business at Viterbo University,” says Dixon, who emphasizes how students can pursue sustainability in business and life. “I teach systems thinking, complex systems change and globally responsible leadership, all of which have a sustainability component.”

She’s also faculty advisor to Enactus, a student organization focused on social entrepreneurship and making a positive impact on the community.

“The best part of how we live is when my daughters make everyday eco-minded choices without even realizing it,” observes Brown. “I can see how remarkable it is, because I have the perspective of having lived differently. But for them, it’s just the way things are done. I think in that way, I’ve succeeded.”

The Nabhi Chakra

S

aha means ‘with’, Ja means ‘born’. Sahaja also means effortless o r s p o n t a n e o u s . Yo g a literally means union or connection. This method of meditation is born with every human being and it connects us with the inner peace and silence that exists deep within each of us. Sahaja Yoga was founded by Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi in 1970. It involves the awakening of a subtle spiritual energy known as the Kundalini which lies dormant in the sacrum bone, rolled up in a spiral of 3-1/2 coils. The gentle awakening of this Kundalini energy and the inner journey of self-discovery is known as self-realization. This process of self-realization is centuries old and was practiced by saints throughout its history, for example Confucius, Moses, Sai Nath, Guru Nanak, etc.

However this technique was passed by these primordial masters to just one or two disciples and this could never become popular. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi developed this method by which a normal householder can experience this awakening sitting in his or her house.

Shri Mataji was born in India, and was brought up with a Christian background. She started teaching the technique of Sahaja Yoga meditation to a couple of people in India in the early 1970’s. Then, slowly more and more people in India started to practice it.

In the late 1970’s Shri Mataji moved to London, England. There she also started to teach Sahaja Yoga meditation to a small group of people. Now the meditation is practiced in over 50 24

countries, at no cost. Sahaja Yoga meditation is free.

Previously, to get kundalini awakening, the person would have to dedicate a number of years of his life to get the experience.

He would have to find a genuine guru who would then open one chakra at a time.

Shri Mataji through the technique of Sahaja Yoga meditation was able to awaken the kundalini and the chakras in seconds. In this article, we will discuss the 3rd energy center which is the Nabhi chakra.

In the articles on Sahaja Yoga, published so far in Natural AwakeningHouston, human subtle/spiritual system, Mooladhara and Swadhisthana energy centers were discussed, respectively. As discussed previously, the human body is made up of three channels and seven energy centers.

The left channel controls our emotions, the right channel controls the actions and planning and the central channel gets us into balance and is responsible for our ascent. Nabhi chakra is the third energy center in our subtle system. Nabhi Chakra is the place of our seeking and our satisfaction. This center is situated in the stomach area, in the center of the subtle body region known as the Void. At the gross level, this chakra corresponds to solar plexus as shown in figure above. This center gives us the power to sustain things within ourselves, governs the function of digestion and assimilation and controls the functioning of stomach, spleen, intestine and part of liver in human body. It has 10 sub-plexus and its element is water. Each chakra in the human body has different qualities and by healing and balancing these chakras, we awaken and enhance these qualities within us. The qualities represented by this chakra are evolution, generosity, righteousness and sustenance. Each Chakra is represented on our hands, feet and our head. Following figures show these places for the Nabhi chakra.

this chakra, the needs for water, food, shelter, love, and fulfilment which ultimately manifest as our spiritual seeking. It is the power of our pure desire that awakens and sustains Kundalini’s ascent and determines the quality of our Self-realization. The affirmation for enlightening Nabhi Chakra is “In my Spirit, I am satisfied”.

After Self-realization, the awakened Kundalini pierces the Nabhi from side to side and soothes and nourishes this important center. The principle element of Nabhi is water. Water is the key element that sustains all earthly life and is essential to the evolutionary process.

Shri Mataji describes the powers of water as parallel to the spiritual powers of a Sahaja Yogi whose awakened Kundalini can similarly nourish others.

According to Shri Mataji, Kundalini quenches, cools, nourishes, permeates, cleanses, purifies, connects, revitalizes and evolves. Since Nabhi is closely related to water, clean water is good for it.

A person with a healthy Nabhi is relaxed, peaceful, generous, and is a satisfied person. The Nabhi Chakra relates closely to the home and wellbeing of the family. If our welfare seems threatened, if we do not feel at ease, or if we have trouble fulfilling our basic needs then the Nabhi chakra can feel pressured. We are often caught up in endless desires for security, sensation, power and control, including the desire for material wealth. To maintain our satisfaction within, we must also be able to exist in a balanced state of satisfaction without things beyond the basic needs.

Since this earthly realm is full of so many attractions and choices, it is easy to become dissatisfied. The way through these choices has been charted in all sustainable societies and true religions as a principled code or way of life called Dharma. The more one enjoys becoming the Spirit the less time one has for wrongful things, outside of Dharma.

The seeker of truth surrenders desires and agendas so they feel satisfied within, whatever they have, and so they focus their desire power on their spiritual unfoldment.

The presiding deity, or personification of the Nabhi principle, is Shri Vishnu and his consort Shri Laxmi. There are many powers that are invested in these two. He is responsible for sustaining Dharma and leading the human evolution. She grants physical and material well-being, on the left, she is Shri Gruhalaxmi, the wife or Goddess of the household. The wife must be respected and also be respectable. So many of our society’s problems often

stem from poor quality of home life resulting in sense of dissatisfaction.

Food is also closely involved with satisfaction and the Nabhi. Too much attention on food, or fasting, or the wrong type of foods can cause problems for the Nabhi chakra.

We eat to live not live to eat. Our food and well-being are prerequisite for our functioning both within and without.

Food that soothes the Nabhi and cools the liver helps the attention attain thoughtless meditation.

True satisfaction can only be sustained when our Spirit comes into our attention. It is the Spirit’s power, the Kundalini, which has created, evolved and sustained us and it is the Kundalini that connects us to that source of satisfaction.

These are some simple techniques that can help balance this chakra and establish its qualities within any individual.

On climate, industry is leading Congress

ERAWeek is the Super Bowl of energy policy conferences, and with a hefty price tag it tends to attract some pretty high-horsepower individuals from both industry and government. Not hailing from the C-Suite myself, I had the privilege to attend the final two days only because of the generous complimentary invitation I received through my alumni association. As a fiscally-conservative engineer that spent eight years with ExxonMobil yet is quite concerned about climate change, I went with a mix of interest and cautious optimism.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this power-, oil-, and gas-focused group. How would my fellow energyindustry professionals frame the issue of climate change at the conference?

Would it come up at all?

What I got out of my two days was this: industry is more mentally and technologically prepared to decarbonize the economy today than I have ever seen before. Regardless of the makeup of the panel or the stated topic, the issue of climate change and greenhouse gas mitigation came up in

almost every session, and usually in the context of seeking solutions.

When asked if we need a carbon price, energy-giant Engie’s representative said “the answer is clearly yes,“ and that the absence of a plan from regulators “is a huge risk” to business. In a separate panel, a representative from coal-heavy power utility Southern Company was clear that while they felt the Administration’s Clean Power Plan (CPP) was an “overreach,” the company views climate change as a “major issue,” is investing in low/no-carbon technologies like nuclear and carbon capture, and has already migrated its generating fleet from 70% coal in 2007 to 33% today.

For the technologists among us, it was also a joy to hear about the rapid and faster-than-expected price declines and performance improvements in batteries from Tesla and others.

In the time that I was there, I saw zero climate denial and little, if any, grumbling about the UN’s COP21 talks in Paris. In fact, the agreement was largely regarded as a positive

development and industry has already responded by putting its best scientists and engineers to work.

With this lead-in, I was excited for the conference’s final session with Senators Murkowski of Alaska and Cornyn of Texas. Even if there remains debate on the right policy solution, with industry almost unanimously calling for government guidance, surely the Senators would echo that sentiment in their remarks, right?

To put it bluntly: wrong. While they did focus on other very important issues including access to oil/gas on federal lands and oil exports, when it came to climate change their remarks felt strangely inconsistent with the rest of the conference. All we heard was criticism of the Clean Power Plan.

Whether the CPP is the right solution or not, arguing about it without offering an alternative doesn’t help the Texan cattleman or Alaskan fisherman who are feeling climate impacts already.

I sincerely wish the Senators had been able to attend the prior few days at the conference and observed what I did. In part, they may have been playing to an outdated notion that industry is opposed to a carbon price.

To be sure, some folks are, but when leaders like BP and Shell are calling for one, they’re doing so not just because it’s good for society, but because predictability is good for business.

Even here in Texas, the public would seem to agree. Per polling done by a joint team at Yale and George Mason University, support in the state for a policy like ExxonMobil’s revenue-neutral carbon fee is favored at a margin of nearly two to one.

When asked a more general question to simply regulate CO2 as a pollutant, support jumps to almost three to one!

I invite the Senators to revisit their views on the issue. If you don’t like the CPP, that’s fine - propose an alternative. Your citizenry and businesses have made their move by indicating a readiness for a marketbased alternative such as a revenueneutral carbon fee. Your turn.

Rain Harvesting in Houston Metal Rain Tanks, LLC

n keeping with this month’s theme of freshwater scarcity and everyday sustainability we are pleased to Spotlight Metal Rain Tanks, LLC, a Houston startup company. For the past four years Nell Wheeler and Dean Cook have been manufacturing and installing tanks for rain water harvesting, and, yes, rain water harvesting is legal in the state of Texas. Rainwater harvesting is part of the state plan for water conservation. In addition, there is no state sales tax on rainwater items and many Texas communities encourage it with various tax breaks and incentives and under Texas law, Homeowners’ Associations cannot prohibit rainwater collection.

They originally used galvanized iron for its nostalgic look but found that today’s galvanized isn’t what it was decades ago, Today’s galvanized tanks only have a life expectancy of about 15 years, and that’s only if

they’ve been coated internally with a toxic fume producing epoxy. So they switched to stainless steel because it lasts practically forever, and it does not require a plastic/epoxy coating which produces toxic vapors. Currently about half of their tanks are installed in the Houston area and the rest are shipped out all over the country.

The primary uses for the rainwater

harvested are irrigation and storm water retention. Rainwater contains no chlorine or chloramines but does have some dissolved nitrogen which is good for plants. If you are currently watering your lawn, flower beds, trees and garden with tap water, you can save money and continue to water during the summer even during water restriction days. Your green lawn will be truly green. In Houston, adding impervious surface frequently requires storm water detention. Usually, this takes the form of a rainwater retention pond to hold the run off for a while and then release. Rainwater tanks can accomplish the same purpose in less space.

Harvested rainwater can be used for drinking and other household uses but the user would have to be responsible for its testing and treatment. It is possible to do this even inside the city, but a system that will pass the city building code is definitely not a do-it-yourself project. However, in rural west Texas rainwater harvesting and filtration is more cost effective than drilling a well.

As the aquifers become more depleted and surface water becomes more difficult to treat, rainwater harvesting will become more important and more cost effective. Even today it is another way to conserve our scarce resources of fresh water and make our world a little greener.

The Water Element Kidney Qi, Balance & Light, Mind/Body Medicine

ater is a great necessity, without it nothing can live. Only earth and water can bring forth a living soul. Such is the greatness of water that spiritual regeneration cannot happen without it.

Thales of Miletus, one of the seven sages and the father of philosophy, concluded that water was the beginning of all things, the first of all elements and most potent because of its mastery over the rest.

Water is a cleansing, healing, psychic and loving element. It is the feeling of friendship and love that pours over us when we are with our family, friends and loved ones. When we swim it is the water that supports us, when we are thirsty, it is the water that quenches our thirst. Another manifestation of this element is the rain that drenches us, or the dew formed on plant life after the sun has set.

The kidneys are responsible for the delicate balance of water in our bodies, electrolytes, sodium and the potassium necessary for the circulation of bioelectrical energy (Qi/Light/Life Force) throughout the body.

They come in pairs, a marriage of duplicate order to achieve the mandatory balance within all organ systems. When there are digestive issues or congestion in the blood, lungs or liver we must look at the Kidney meridian and the imbalance of qi/chi/energy that is attempting to reveal.

The kidneys rest in the sacral plexus, the 2nd chakra and their fluidity is directly influenced by our emotions/water.

In his book, The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles, scientist Bruce Lipton documents his research with an illustration of the structure of the cell wall possessing little doors or openings that correlate to our emotions. Cell walls (boundaries) become habituated to experiences of emotion and learn to receive energy positive or negative from chronic ways of being. For example when there is a habitual condition of anger – this would be the only feeling the cell learned how to recognize or receive. Consequently the cellular structure would be shaped and formed by anger or resentment.

iving in the fourth largest city, you can easily distance yourself from nature. In the city limits you find everything you can possibly need or want. We are far away from the cavemen days where foraging was essential for our survival. In our current civilized life, we no longer have to grow our own food or even travel a long distance to grab a bite to eat. We value convenience with hundreds of grocery stores and supermarkets in our surrounding area.

It is no surprise that we are accustomed to having the world at our feet and living in the fast lane. Every year our city continues to grow and with our busy life we tend to forget about the simple times. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with technology and fail to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Think about how there is plenty to see and do if you just take a moment to discover the open space. It is good for your mind, body and soul to break away from the daily hectic rituals and reconnect with nature. It is hard to believe that out in the wild you can find food, which is one of the most important necessities for survival.

Outside, there are fields and forests that can provide you with edible plants filled with rich nutrients.

Foraging for edible plants may not be an easy task, but it is definitely rewarding. You can benefit from the exercise and vitamin rich plants that you find along the way. “Plants found in the wild are free, fresh and contain healing powers. Edible plants that are gathered from foraging are healthier than the food found at your grocery store.” When foraging, it is important to remember that not all plants are edible.

other Earth’s gentle hand is the secure cushion that warms us on long nights and sings comforting messages through endless days, protecting us even when things seem amiss. Take in her lovely presence. Embrace her consistent wisdom. Know that her dreams are ours and ours hers, connected by timely, comforting songs.

It’s time to step away from the manicured lawns, concrete walks and well-planned gardens. An open door beckons us to the sparkling air out there to listen to the grasses breathe and murmur. Prairie grasses roll on and on through curvaceous hills and flat-edged fields, undeterred by human attempts to control their rippling arpeggios. We are asked to just listen. Be alone with the music of the grasses and be in harmony with the hum of the universe.

Mother Earth’s apron is laden with flowers; simple, everpresent reminders that we are loved. She tempts us to take some time off, shed our shoes and settle into the lyrical realms of her strong body.

The trees reach to the depths of the earth, deep into the mystery of lavender waters, and simultaneously throw their arms to the heavens, connecting all things living. The wind hears the prevailing songs that weave in and out of these lovely courtiers of the forest. In listening to their unerring stories, we let their siren songs sigh into our soul.

It’s time to play in Earth’s garden and see her for who she is—today. Don’t hesitate. Go, play, linger, breathe and be one with the present moment.
