reetings! April certainly had its share of showers this year and everything looks so green and new. Springtime is a time of renewal. Now that May is here, the things we planted just a few months ago have leafing out. We have already harvested and dried the first crop of early spring herbs giving those plants that got a slower start room to grow. I got two pine trees at Earth Day and planted them in the front yard. I think that their fragrance will remind me of my home in Arkansas. As the rains grow less frequent and the ground dries up, we look forward to taking our pack of basenjis to the dog parks on a regular basis. I also look forward to going on long bike rides on the bike trails along the bayous, testing the new Green Lane downtown and maybe getting back into Critical Mass. Cindy has plans to walk our little Tibetan spaniel along the Heights Boulevard esplanade before the weather gets too hot for both of them. Now that there is less pollen in the air, the screens are back on the windows so there is fresh cool air at night for sleeping at least for a while. Besides being a new co-publisher, I teach math at one of our cities best math and science magnet schools so I’m looking forward to school being out at the end of this month so I can sleep later and spend more time working on the magazine. I guess spring is a time to look toward the future but fun as it is to anticipate the next good thing it would be a shame to miss all the good things that are happening in the right now. So we will try to live in the moment as much as is practical. Take time to notice the world of nature around you even in the big city. Take time to talk, actually talk to friends. Pay more attention to each other. Do a random act of kindness or a senseless act of beauty most every day. Pay it forward maybe once a week. Meditate. Be grateful. And just breathe.

Introducing Grendl Taylor
I
’ve known Grendl Taylor for several years. We first met at one of the local metaphysical fairs where we were both reading tarot cards. When business was slow, we’d take turns doing readings for each other. Our paths have crossed many times since. When she told me that Jenny was retiring from Center Point, I was very glad that she would be taking her place. I felt that I should introduce her to those of you who don’t know her. Grendl discovered as a child that she was very good, unusually good, at playing guessing games. Nothing much came of it until she was in college though. One night one of her friends brought out her tarot deck. Grendl started playing with it and somehow got in the zone and began telling the other girls things that she couldn’t have known. This was as much a surprise to Grendl as her friends so she began studying card reading and meditation. The college game plan was to study English-Language Arts and become a teacher but part way through she fell in love with a clown and ran off to join the circus. It was in the circus that she honed her card reading skills. She also learned business management skills and discovered that she was good at that as well. While in the circus she worked as office manager, road manager and general manager. Circus is hard work and fun but it didn’t last forever. Since leaving life on the road, she has been a regular reader at metaphysical shops and fairs. Not only her insightful readings but
her impish grin and sense of humor that is always ready to bubble to the surface leaves a lasting impression on her clients. When I asked her about the future of Center Point her answer was, “The original mission to create a community where everyone can feel that they have something to offer others and something to gain from others in the community continues. I want Center Point to continue to be a place where you can go to talk with other people about esoteric matters without feeling like people think you are crazy.” There are a few changes though. New location: 2727 Fondren Suite 5M (corner of Fondren and Westheimer) and a new retail store in the front. If you have never been to one of the Sunday fairs at Center Point go by from 1 to 5 pm and meet Grendl in person. Companies Slowly Embrace Sustainability Th e 2 0 1 5 S t a t e o f G r e e n Business report (Tinyurl. com/2015GreenBusinessReport), which assesses the environmental performances of companies worldwide, along with the trends to watch, is produced by GreenBiz, in partnership with Trucost. Collectively, companies have been nibbling at the edges of challenges such as climate change, food security, ecosystems preservation and resource efficiency. One measure of corporate engagement going forward will be proactive involvement on political issues that could accelerate the transition to a lowcarbon and more sustainable economy. It remains to be seen whether companies can afford to sit on the sidelines, letting the political process unfold, or worse, play defense against changes that might roil their status quo. 2015 will be an interesting year on multiple fronts, especially with the launch of the new sustainable development goals at the United Nations (UN) in New York this fall, along with UN climate talks in Paris in December. Both will be tests of corporate engagement and resolve in driving the kinds of change many of their CEOs publicly call for. The reports’ findings of companies’ progress in greenhouse gas and emissions, air pollutants, water use and solid waste production are all leveling off or even declining.
Instead of buying or renting expensive specialized machinery, farmers in Maine can now join a “lending library” of farm tools on short-term loan by using the Shared-Use Farm Equipment Pool, a partnership between the Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. There are already equipment co-ops and joint machinery ownerships around the country; now the sharing economy being established in urban areas seems to be catching on in rural America, too. For a $100 annual fee, members can gain access to a seedbed cultivator, two-shank sub-soiler, plastic mulch layer, tine weeder, and strip and ridge tillers. The 1,200-pound mulch layer, for instance, retails for more than $2,000. Each piece is undeniably useful, but pricey, especially given the cost per use. Farmers have a three-day window to use the tools. The pool came about when Mike Gold, an MFT staff member, saw the need to lower costs for both new and seasoned farmers. Currently, most of the tool pool members are newer vegetable farmers, but Gold says there’s appeal for established land stewards, too: “They see the opportunity to use that one piece of equipment that they may only need once a year or once every few years.” Source: ModernFarmer.com

Women Marathoners Better at Maintaining Speed Danish researchers studying almost 2 million marathon results from 131 marathon races over a period of five years have concluded that women are 18.6 percent better than men at maintaining a consistent pace overall, compared to the first and the last parts of the distance. Among the population studied, 68.5 percent were men and 31.5 percent were women. Stores Filled with Toxic Products HealthyStuff, a project of the Michiganbased Ecology Center, in collaboration with the Campaign for Healthier Solutions (CHS), has released a report, A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Discount Retailers are Falling Behind on Safer Chemicals, about toxic chemicals found in dollar store products. It includes test results for 164 dollar store products such as toys, jewelry, school supplies and household items and found that 81 percent contained at least one hazardous chemical above a level that generates concern.” The campaign sent a letter to the CEOs of the four largest dollar store chains, including Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and 99 Cents Only, urging them to stop the sale of these unsafe products, especially to communities of low-income and ethnic families that already live in more polluted areas and food deserts, and adopt policies that will instead protect both customers and their own businesses. Combined, these discount chains have annual sales totaling more than $36 billion and operate more stores nationally than Walmart. Tools for Teenagers Mindfulness in Classroom Management

amie* (name changed) was the high school student who directed his energy to pestering others, defying requests to start working, and retaliating with, “But it wasn’t my fault—he started it, Ms. G!” when I saw him throw paper balls at his friend during my 5th Period class. Don’t negotiate with him, my mentor advised. He wants to argue with you, oppose you, push your buttons, and see what he can get away with. Show him who is in charge. I struggled to accept my mentor’s comments; I wanted to understand
why Jamie was reflexively reacting to situations, rather than thoughtfully responding. And, I wondered, how could I use my experiences in mindfulness and yoga to coach Jamie to respond more effectively? The 5 Breaths activity was crucial to my behavioral management strategy with Jamie. I told Jamie that whenever he felt anger, frustration, or the impulse to annoy his peers, he had my permission to give me a “secret signal” (index finger indicating the #1) that enabled him to

step outside and take 5 Breaths. One condition: the 5 Breaths had to be slow inhales and exhales through the nose, with one hand on his stomach. Jamie’s response to practicing 5 Breaths for the first time was, “Ms. G, was that magic!?” The 5 Breaths activity became our thing. It worked for Jamie because it gave him something to do with his body, his breath, and his mind—something on which he wasn’t graded or judged. By directing his energy to his breath, Jamie created time for a response instead of a reaction. For

Jamie, this activity gave him control in a situation over which he felt he had none. As miraculous as t h e e f f e c t s m ay h ave seemed to Jamie, the s l ow, d e e p b r e a t h i n g wasn’t magic. Slow, deep breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s “rest and digest” system that decreases heart rate and blood pressure, signaling to the body that it is an appropriate time to relax. In too many school settings, students like Jamie hear constant commands from teachers and administrators: “sit down, be quiet, sit still, pay attention, stay awake, control yourself.” While these commands—which are more common than the hot chips you see in the school cafeteria—are in place to create order and discipline, how often are students, especially ones with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), actually given the tools and training to truly understand how to comply? Sitting still and paying attention is hard! Just ask any adult who has sat through a staff meeting recently. For students who may be on the Attention Deficit or Oppositional scale, constantly hearing these commands— without having an accessible toolkit of strategies to manage their bodies, emotions, and thoughts—can be a serious stressor. This stress often activates the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the “fight-or-flight” reaction (increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased signaling to the body to either “fight” or “flee” from an emergency situation—or to flat-out “freeze”). This

creates a negative feedback loop, but one that can be broken by giving students tools that help calm them and allow the function of reason to kick in. By letting himself breathe, Jamie was enabling his body to relax, rather than engage his “fight-or-flight” stress reaction. Te a c h i n g s t u d e n t s mindfulness, meditation, and yoga provides students with tools to slow down the moment and create time to respond to stressors, which helps students navigate the narrow definition of an ideal learner that we see in our current education system. These tools can be taught in one-on-one interactions similar to Jamie and Ms. G’s story, or in whole-class settings, similar to Ms. S’s story about bringing meditation to her class of 8th graders in Southeast Houston: At the end of March, just before the Texas State Assessment for ELA and Reading, I nervously began guiding my students through five minutes of meditation every single day. We engaged in breathing, visualization, and positive thinking exercises. Mindfulness, meditation, and yoga had very positively impacted my efficacy as a teacher, so I decided the risk of my students thinking I was totally crazy was worth it! Meditation turned out to be one of the best gifts I ever gave to my students. I know I taught them a lot about reading and writing, and even about social justice and being informed citizens, but I feel meditation had the greatest potential to help my students through the rest of their academic careers and beyond.

It gave them an activity that enabled introspection, emotional regulation, and stress management. For my students, meditation became a daily routine: my students would remind me anytime they thought I would forget about meditation that day. They adopted the tools for themselves, meditating at home before their exams, or meditating for a few breaths to calm their nerves before walking across the stage for their 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony. I knew the tools were working when one of my students—the one whose name EVERY teacher in the school knew because of his seemingly complete lack of selfcontrol—caught me when I was being very reactive, and offered meditation as an option to self-regulate! I even allowed students to become the guides for meditation and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the ODD students who seemed to benefit the most from this experience. As education leaders reflect on how and what we are actually teaching our students, it is crucial that we consider how mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can provide tools for individual development of self-awareness, selfefficacy, and resilience in nonjudgmental and inclusive ways. DAILY DECISIONS Creating Healthy Breasts and Lowering Cancer Risk by Angel Marlow, Clinical Thermographer
H
ow well do you care for your hair and nails? Monthly appointments with the hairdresser and manicurist? That’s okay—we women love looking great and taking pride in our appearance! But how much time do you give to your breasts? What do you do for breast health besides the annual doctor visit and maybe monthly self-exams? There’s a ton of things you can do for breast health— every single day—things that will surprise you…maybe even shock you.
Self-Exam
Myth: Most breast cancer is discovered via mammograms. Fact: Seventy percent of breast cancers are originally detected by patients during a breast self-exam. Make this a monthly habit! Many health professionals recommend that the self-exam be conducted while you’re in the shower or bathtub, when your breasts are wet and covered with a soapy film,
because this film will make it easier to detect abnormal lumps. And while you’re at it, feel under the armpits and along the underside of the clavicle bones, as these are where lymph nodes are located. An enlarged lymph node can be a warning sign.
Topography
Learn your breasts’ natural topography that lies beneath. Know what should be there, so that you can more easily detect what should not be there.
Bras
Just like tight shoes can damage feet, tight bras aren’t good for breast health, as they create a sub-optimal environment for the lymphatic system (whose job it is to clear out toxins). Constricting the breasts, and therefore the lymphatic system, can cause this drainage system to become backed up, creating a buildup of toxins in your body.
Wear a bra only when you absolutely need to. Go braless around the house. As you walk about without a bra, this simulates the body’s most natural environment: movement that promotes cleansing of breast tissue by an unbound lymphatic system. Never, ever sleep with a bra on! This will constrict everything! And when you must wear a bra, don’t wear a tight one that “mushes” everything up.
Massage
In line with freeing up the lymphatic system is that of gently massaging your breasts on a regular basis to encourage drainage of toxins.
Exercise
You don’t have a built-in exercise regimen just because you clean the house. Add structured aerobics and strength training to the equation. Structured exercise, which can include yoga, boosts the

immune system’s ability to surveil for abnormalities and then correct them, plus promotes lymphatic system efficacy.
and 6 am in a blackened room (use blackout curtains). Awakening to a sunrise simulator will solve the problem of trying to awaken for the day in a dark room. Night lights, moonlight coming through a window and street lights shining in will disrupt this healthful effect. Keep curtains closed; learn to feel your way around if you’re prone to middle-ofthe-night bathroom trips.
Genetic Screening
Visit a genetic counselor to see if you qualify for the genetic test that detects the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutations. Anywhere from 45-65 percent of women with one of these mutations will develop breast cancer by age 70.
Artificial Light
If you’re up late using lighting, use special lights and eyeglasses that have one function: blocking the blue wavelength of the white light spectrum. The blue wavelength at nighttime impedes melatonin production. By blocking this, you’ll help preserve melatonin production.
Sleep

Quality sleep in a pitch black room optimizes production of two of the body’s weapon’s against disease: melatonin and human growth hormone. Melatonin promotes breast health, and HGH boosts immune function and helps burn fat. Production of these hormones is maximal when you get seven to eight hours of restful sleep between 10 pm
Do you drink bottled water or anything else? Plastic bottles contain xenoestrogens, also known as hormone disruptors. The result is too many estrogen-like substances in breast tissue, which can be a precursor to deranged cell growth in the breasts, since estrogenic compounds

Soy
There are two kinds of soy: fermented and unfermented (“Westernized”). Don’t think for a moment that the soy in a “soysauge,” soy protein bar or soy crackers has the same effect on the body as soy in natural form such as tempeh and miso. Westernized (processed) soy is believed to promote acceleration of breast tissue growth—and we certainly don’t want that. If you want to emulate those who live in Japan who are known for their low rates of breast cancer, then drink up the miso soup and snack on the edamame—but limit this to three servings per week. Even soy in natural form (fermented) contains phytoestrogens which mimic the body’s natural estrogen. And avoid soy isoflavone pills at all costs.

aluminum, a product of common deodorants, was found in excised cancerous breast tissue. Concentration of this metal was higher in the tissue near the armpits. Though studies do not exist that confirm aluminum from deodorant causes breast cancer in humans, the presence of higher concentrations of this metal in cancerous tissue near the armpits is a pretty compelling reason to rethink your use of deodorant. Use it only when absolutely necessary. On days you can’t afford to have stinky armpits like working out at the gym around other people who are inhaling heavily around you, use aluminum-free deodorant.

Carefully discuss with your doctor your options if the symptoms of menopause and postmenopause are troubling enough to interfere with your well-being. Mammograms and Thermography
A 2D mammogram will miss 20 percent of cancers in women with average breasts. In women with extremely dense breasts, the miss rate jumps to around 40 percent; some estimates say 60 percent. Three-D (tomographic) mammography is much more accurate than 2D, but both forms expose the breasts to significant radiation and compress the breast tissue. This doesn’t mean that you should cease getting mammograms; they can be part of your overall approach to breast health. A n o t h e r a p p r o a ch i s t h a t o f thermography, an imaging tool that uses heat technology to detect suspicious masses in breast tissue. In fact, thermography can pick up changes in breast tissue eight to 10 years before these changes develop into something that appears suspicious on a mammogram. Getting Out of Mind Hell Healing Dis-Ease

I
n last month’s The WHAI ™ article entitled, “Transforming Disease Patterns into Healing Habits,” I expressed that to heal or improve any aspect of our health or life conditions, we must recognize our disease patterns in mind, and intentionally replace them with healing thoughts and behaviors. Specifically, all health problems are the formed effects of persistent dis-eased thoughts, (i.e., toxic emotions and negative mind patterns). The main tenet was that the state of our health and life conditions are the direct reflection of our mindset. At The WHAI™ (The Wellness & Healing Arts Institute), I regularly meet with people who want to begin a healing program. They have the need, the time, and the resources; however, what is often dreadfully lacking is their willingness to face and climb out of the hell they created

and entrapped themselves in. Here, ‘hell’ refers to the state of dis-ease manifesting in their mind, body, and daily reality. ‘Disease’ means a persistent, unconscious, negative state of mind, (i.e., irritation, depression, anger, and self-loathing). Hence, to live with a dis-eased mind, is to exist in a form of “hell on earth.” Hell on earth describes those of us who, for years, live with dis-ease patterns in mind, body, and reality—actually, they are one and the same. It is impossible to have a dis-eased mind or body yet have a heavenly reality or vice versa. So, how do we climb out of our mind hell? First, recognize and admit that we are in a hell. Unfortunately, for many, this initial recognition is extremely difficult… if not impossible. Why? Because, we want to maintain our illusions; we don’t want to admit that we created our own hellish

prison. The other problem is if we take responsibility for having independently created and locked ourselves in hell, we must also take the sole responsibility for getting ourselves out. This is our big dilemma! Next, we must honestly face our dis-eased reality and endeavor to change its causes, (e.g., dis-eased thoughts, intentions, and behaviors). At The WHAI™, when I offer to teach potential healing program participants how to do this, many balk at the opportunity because they are not ready to release their false beliefs that the way out of hell is by being “fixed,” “healed,” or “saved” by someone else (e.g., doctor, healer, therapist). Or, they habitually consume and rely on things outside themselves, such as pharmaceuticals, food, sex, or entertainment. It is exactly these types of beliefs and habits that imprisons us. Until we trade the imprisoning belief of being healed with the liberating truth of heal thyself…we remain locked in our own mind prison. An example is someone who, many years ago, participated in The WHAI™ Wellness and Healing Program. At that time, they were a business owner, health-conscious, physically fit and active, yet manifested dis-ease in the form of a life-threatening embolism, chronic anxiety, financial instability, coffee addiction, and multiple failed relationships. Upon completing two WHAI™ healing programs, and

participating in Meditative Fitness ™ classes, all dis-ease manifestations were dramatically improved. However, once healed and out of hell they disappeared, not to be seen or heard from for several years. Recently, however, they contacted me again to request another WHAI ™ healing program because their former disease manifestations recurred, (including another strained relationship). RETHINKING BREAST HEALTH Natural ways to keep breasts smooth, pain-free and firm, while reducing the risk of cancer. by Lisa Marshall
W
e’ve been conditioned to narrowly define breast health in terms of pink ribbon campaigns, cancer awareness marches and cold, steel mammography machines. Nearly 30 years after anticancer drug maker Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals) established the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 1985, many women have come to equate healthy breasts with cancer-free breasts, and assume the most important thing they can do is undergo regular screening. But amid this chorus, some women’s health advocates are striving to get a different message across: There are a host of steps women can take to not only fend off disease in the future, but keep their breasts in optimal condition today. “We need to change the conversation about our breasts from how to avoid breast cancer and detect it early to how to have healthy breasts and enjoy them,” says Dr. Christiane Northrup, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Yarmouth, Maine, and author of the new book Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality, and Well-Being.
Healthy Breasts, Healthy Body
In adolescence, breast changes are the first to signal the arrival of womanhood. When she’s aroused, a woman’s nipples harden and change color. When a woman gives birth, her breasts fill with life-giving milk. “In all these ways, your breasts are deeply connected to your femininity, compassion and sensuality,” says Hawaiian Naturopathic
Doctor Laurie Steelsmith, co-author of Natural Choices for Women’s Health. Because breasts are extremely sensitive to hormonal fluctuations throughout the body, they can also serve as a barometer of overall health. “If you’re having chronic breast symptoms, it can be your body’s wisdom saying, ‘Help. Something’s wrong.’ Women need to listen.” While some premenstrual swelling and tenderness is normal, exaggerated or persistent pain is often a sign of systemic estrogen dominance in relation to progesterone. It’s common in the years leading up to menopause, but can also hint at impaired thyroid function, because low levels of thyroid hormones have been shown to boost estrogen in breast tissue, advises Steelsmith. Large, fluid-filled cysts or fibrous lumps, while non-cancerous, can also be a reflection of overexposure to harmful chemicals and toxin buildup, combined
with poor lymph flow, notes Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan, an integrative physician in Greensboro, North Carolina. “If a woman has lumpy, bumpy breasts, they probably contain too many toxins, and those toxins are primarily estrogenic.” Addressing such symptoms is important not only to relieve discomfort, but also because excess estrogen can fuel future cancer risk, says Vaughan. Any new, suspicious lump should be evaluated by a professional. Also, severe breast tenderness combined with nipple discharge could be a sign of infection or a problem with the pituitary gland, so it should also be checked. But typically, subtle natural healthcare steps can go a long way toward restoring breast wellness. For nipple tenderness, Steelsmith recommends chaste-tree berry (175 milligrams [mg] of powdered extract or 40 drops daily). The herbal supplement

mimics naturally occurring progesterone in the body, helping to counter estrogen dominance. Vitamin E (400 to 800 international units [IU] per day) and evening primrose oil (1,500 mg twice a day) have also been shown to alleviate breast tenderness. For fibrous or cyst-filled breasts, Vaughan advises supplementing with iodine (up to 12.5 mg per day via kelp, seaweed or oral tablets) or applying an iodine solution to the breasts at night. A key constituent of thyroid hormones, iodine helps the liver convert unfriendly forms of estrogen into friendlier forms and flush toxins out of lymph nodes in the breast. Also, steer clear of chocolate and coffee, because caffeine is believed to interact with enzymes in the breast, exaggerating pain and lumpiness. Also consider ditching the bra, says Vaughan. Brassieres can constrict lymph nodes and hinder blood circulation in breasts, locking toxins in and aggravating fibrocystic symptoms. The link between bras and breast cancer risk remains hotly debated, with one 2014 U.S. National Cancer Institute study of 1,400 women concluding unequivocally that, “There’s no evidence that wearing a bra increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer,” while smaller studies from the United States, China, Venezuela, Scotland and Africa suggest a link. Vaughan, the founder of BraFree.org, says the science is compelling enough that she has chosen to keep her own bra use to a minimum and advises her patients to do the same. “Obviously, there are certain sports where you should wear a sports bra and there are certain dresses that only look right with a bra,” says Vaughan. At a minimum, avoid wearing a bra to bed and steer clear of underwires and overly
tight bras that leave red marks. “This is not about guilt-tripping women into never wearing a bra. It’s about wearing a bra less.”
Beautiful Breasts Naturally
Too small or too big, lopsided or riddled with stretch marks… it seems almost every woman has a complaint about the appearance of her breasts. That’s a problem, says Northrup, because, “Healthy breasts are breasts that are loved. We have to stop beating them up.” According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of women getting breast implants for cosmetic reasons ballooned from 212,500 in 2000 to 286,254 in 2014. Physicians—including Northrup— claim that modern implants don’t, in the majority of cases, promote disease like older silicone implants did. Yet even plastic surgeons warn that having implants should be fully thought out, and at some point they’ll probably have to come out. “They are manmade devices, and are not intended to be lifelong. At some point, you will probably have to have further surgery,” says Dr. Anureet Bajaj, an Oklahoma City plastic surgeon. Bajaj notes that implants can rupture, forming scar tissue and lending irregular shape to the breast. Often, as a woman ages and her body changes, the larger breasts she chose in her 20s no longer look right and may cause back and shoulder pain. In some cases, implants can also lead to loss of nipple sensitivity. For these and other reasons, 23,774 women—including actress Melissa Gilbert and model Victoria Beckham—had their implants removed in 2014, often following up with a breast lift (using their own tissue) to restore their shape.

Vaughan sees breast implant removal as a wise and courageous choice to restore optimal breast health. Better yet, don’t get implants in the first place. “There are a lot of other things you can do to improve the appearance of your breasts,” she advises. Vaughan recommends breastperking exercises like dumbbell bench presses and flys that tone the pectoral muscles beneath the breasts, making them more resilient and look larger. To prevent or reverse sagging, she again urges women to go bra-free. “We have ligaments in the upper outer quadrant of our breasts called Cooper’s ligaments, and they’re responsible for holding our breasts up. Just like your muscles atrophy when you put your arm in a sling, your Cooper’s ligaments atrophy if you wear a bra all the time.” In one unpublished, yet highly publicized 2013 study, French Exercise Physiologist Jean-Denis Rouillon measured the busts of 330 women ages 18 to 35 over a period of 15 years and found those that regularly wore a bra had droopier breasts with lower nipples than those that didn’t. In another, smaller, Japanese study, researchers found that when women stopped wearing a bra for three months, their breasts perked up. Those worried about stretch marks also have options. They can be a sign of inadequate copper, which promotes collagen integrity and helps skin stretch without injury, says Steelsmith. If rapid weight gain is occurring due to adolescence, pregnancy or for other reasons, try taking copper supplements or applying a topical copper spray on the breasts. Remember to massage your breasts daily, not only as a “search and destroy mission” for early detection of cancerous lumps, says Northrup, but as a way to get waste products flowing out and loving energy flowing in. “It concerns me that women feel pressured to think of their breasts as two potentially pre-malignant lesions sitting on their chests,” Northrup says. “These are organs of nourishment and pleasure for both ourselves and others. Sometimes a woman has subconscious blocks to conception that she is unaware of, but often the “culprits” are stress and a lack of confidence on the part of the woman,(and her partner as well.) Stress, which is defined as the body’s response to any change, has become a serious health issue in our society and can affect the body, mind and spirit in many adverse ways. Stress can be due to good changes or bad changes, but always requires an adaptation on the part of the individual. Stress can be acute (of sudden onset and short duration, as in an emergency situation) or it can be chronic ( of gradual onset and prolonged duration.)
