Greetings!

As we slide into August, despite the hot weather, many of us experience a flurry of activities: back to school shopping, that last vacation trip before schools starts or that big project you’ve been putting off but can put off no longer. Out here at The Cabin, we are trying to keep cool. Outside tasks like mowing the field or even walking the dogs are done early in the morning or in the evening before dark. Inside tasks, mainly working on the magazine fill most of the rest of our time. Our children are grown and have long since left the nest. I no longer teach school so the rhythm of the school year has been replaced by the monthly rhythm of publishing a magazine. We are hoping to break away for a short camping trip in October when the weather has turned cooler.

For those of you who do have children who are still at home, this month’s issue features a great article on 21st Century Parenting. same thoughts over and over again. Every single one is an affirmation; this also includes everything that you say. By reducing your negative thoughts and words and increasing the positive ones, you can reshape your life. Expecting a better day helps to create a better life. The only place we have to take action or make changes is the present moment.

The word opportunity inspires hope. Opportunities can come from unexpected sources. Some present as a chance to do something new or different or something more. Being aware and paying attention makes it easier to recognize the opportunities when they arrive.

Floating Solar: Catching Some Rays on the Water Solar panels currently generate only about

1 percent of our nation’s energy needs, but new research from the federal National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows that installation of “floatovoltaics”—floating electricity-generating photovoltaic panels—on only one-fourth of our manmade reservoirs would generate about 10 percent of U.S. energy needs without taking up valuable real estate. Floatovoltaics cost less to install than traditional, land-based solar panels because there’s no need to clear land or treat soil, and research shows that the natural cooling effect of the water below can boost the solar panels’ power production by up to 22 percent. Quit Smoking to Avoid Rheumatoid Arthritis Stopping smoking has the long-term benefit of reducing the risk of

developing seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by 37 percent over 30 years, say researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston. The study was based on data from the 230,000 women that participated in two longitudinal Nurses’ Health Studies, and focused on the 969 women that developed seropositive RA. Risk began to go down about five years after women quit smoking and continued to decrease the longer they stayed non-smokers. Patients with seropositive RA generally have more severe disease manifestations, including joint deformities and disability.

Running novices that

trained for six months and then ran their first marathon actually reversed the aging of major blood vessels—and older and slower people benefitted most, report researchers at University College London. The study of 139 healthy first-time marathon runners, ages 21 to 69, was presented at the 2019 European Society of Cardiology Congress.

It found that those first-timers reduced their arterial age by four years and their stroke risk by 10 percent over their lifetime.

In another study presented at the Congress that was based on data from 605 heart failure patients, researchers reported that those walking the farthest in a six-minute test, indicating better fitness, were significantly less likely to have the cognitive impairment that afflicts 67 percent of patients with heart failure.

PARENTING Preparing Kids for the Future

Today’s children have more opportunities

to change the world than ever before. Teenagers are organizing global activism movements, LEGO lovers are mastering robotics and young entrepreneurs are launching successful businesses before they’re old enough to drive.

But for Mom and Dad, this fast-paced, technology-driven childhood looks drastically different from their own. To help kids thrive, parents must learn to mindfully embrace today’s modern advances without losing sight of timeless virtues and skills such as kindness, creativity and critical thinking.

Finding Balance

After-school hours used to be filled with outdoor free play in which kids independently developed their natural capabilities as self-learners and creative problem-solvers.

The Children & Nature Network has reported that just 6 percent of children ages 9 to 13 play outside on their own. Instead, stress and anxiety are on the rise in our competitive culture as many kids attempt to balance heavy homework loads with an overflowing schedule of extracurricular activities.

With the ability to connect to the world at our fingertips, Thomas Murray, director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools, in Washington, D.C., notes that devices can also disconnect us from those right next to us. “It’s a massive struggle to find balance and mindfulness, but it’s vitally important.

How often do we see an AP [advanced placement] kid that is falling apart emotionally? As parents, we need to recognize that kids have a lot on their plate—more than ever before.”

Salt Lake City-based Courtney Carver, author of Soulful Simplicity: How Living with Less Can Lead to So Much More, worries that parents are creating résumés for a life their children probably don’t want. On her BeMoreWithLess.com website, she focuses on living with less clutter, busyness and stress to simplify life and discover what really matters. “It’s challenging to maintain close connections when we’re overwhelmed with what’s in our inbox, or on Instagram or what the kids are looking at online,” she says.

On her own journey to practical minimalism, she gained a greater sense of presence with her daughter. “When you can pay attention to a conversation and not feel distracted and antsy, especially with young kids, that is everything,” says Carver.

Managing Technology

The ubiquity of digital devices is a defining difference between today’s youth and that of their elders, making it difficult for parents to relate and know how to set boundaries.

As senior parenting editor at the nonprofit Common Sense Media, Caroline Knorr helps parents make sense of what’s going on in their kids’ media lives. “We can think of media as a ‘super peer’: When children are consuming it, they’re looking for cues on how to behave and what’s cool and what’s normal.” Parents need to be the intermediary so they can counterbalance the external messages with their own family’s values.

Today’s devices are persuasive and addictive. “As parents, we need set boundaries, model good digital habits and help kids to self-regulate more—which is our ultimate goal,” Knorr says.

To raise good digital citizens, Richard Culatta, CEO of International Society for Technology in Education, in Arlington, Virginia, believes conversations about device use shouldn’t end with screen time limits and online safety. “Ask kids if their technology use is helping them be more engaged and find more meaning in the world or is it pulling them out of the world that they’re in,” he says. “Talk about how to use technology to improve the community around you, recognize true and false info, be involved in democratic processes and making your voice heard about issues you care about.”

Parents are often uncomfortable with their kids socializing digitally, but Culatta encourages the introduction of interactive

media sooner rather than later, so they understand how to engage with the world online before they are old enough to have social media accounts. Geocaching, which uses GPS-enabled devices to treasure hunt, and citizen science apps provide family-friendly opportunities to engage in both outdoor activities and online communities.

“The majority of our kids will need these digital communication skills to be able to work with anyone at any time,” says Murray.

He’s witnessed the impact of connecting classrooms around the world observing,“When students learn to navigate time zones and language barriers to communicate and collaborate, they see that they can solve the worlds’ problems together.”

Raising Innovators

“The world doesn’t care how much our children know; what the world cares about is what they do with what they know,” says Tony Wagner, senior research fellow at the Learning Policy Institute, an education research and policy nonprofit in Palo Alto, California. In his latest book, Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing Our Kids for The Innovation Era, he emphasizes the importance of creative problem-solving and the joy of discovery, especially as more jobs become automated. “We’re born with a temperament of creative problem solvers.

But then something happens. The longer kids are in school, the fewer questions they ask, the more they worry about getting the right answer and fewer and fewer think of themselves as creative in any way,” he says.

“Instead of listening and regurgitating, kids need to learn how to find and be a critical consumer of information,” says Murray.

Fewer employers are asking for college transcripts—including Google—as they discover the disconnect between what students are taught and what innovative skills they actually need.

While most schools are slow to adapt to the modern needs of the future workforce, parents can proactively foster the entrepreneurial spirit and discourage a fear of failure at home by offering safe opportunities for risk-taking and independence. After speaking extensively with compelling young innovators around the world, Wagner discovered that their parents explicitly encouraged three things: play, passion and purpose.

Their children were provided with many opportunities to explore new interests, as well as to learn from their mistakes. “The parents intuitively understood that more important than IQ is grit, perseverance and tenacity. You don’t develop that when Mom is yelling at you to practice; you develop it because you have a real interest.”

To create a culture of innovation, Murray encourages teachers and parents to get to know the interests, passions and strengths of today’s children “and prove to them every day that they matter.” When that interest blossoms into a passion, it can lead to a deeper sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference.

According to Wagner, this happens when parents and teachers instill one simple, but profound moral lesson, “We are not here on this Earth primarily and only to serve ourselves; we have some deep, profound obligation to give back and to serve others.”

Teaching Kindness

In a culture that is obsessed with selfies and threatened by cyberbullies, it’s a tough task for parents to teach compassion and kindness. “We need to create an intentional family culture where virtues like kindness

Sesame Workshop’s 2016 Kindness Study found that 70 percent of parents worry that the world is an unkind place for their kids, but Scarlett Lewis believes it’s all in our mind, saying, “When you choose love, you transform how you see the world from a scary and anxiety-producing place to a loving and welcoming one.”

By now, most people know that a resi-

dential solar system can help the environment and save the homeowner money on electricity bills. However, here’s some more good news! New research sponsored by the Department of Energy through the SunShot Initiative shows that buyers are willing to pay more for homes with rooftop solar panels — a finding that may strengthen the case for factoring the value of sustainable features into home appraisals. According to a study

by Zillow in 2018, “homes with solar-energy systems sold for 4.1% more on average than comparable homes without solar power.” While the exact increase in value depends on a number of factors such as the average hours of sunlight in the location, local electric rates and the local popularity of solar, a figure close to 4% should be expected in most cities nationwide.

The Lawrence Berkeley study also found that homes equipped with solar panels tend to sell slightly faster than similar homes without them. The housing market is driven by the same factors as every marketplace — supply and demand. More and more prospective home buyers want a residential solar system as part of their next home. If your house has one and the other houses in your area do not, buyers will look first at your house and be willing to pay more to purchase it.

CNBC reports that more than 1.3 million U.S. homes had solar installed in the U.S. by the end of 2016. “Previous studies on PV home premiums have been limited in size and scope,” says Ben Hoen, the lead author of the Lawrence Berkeley reports, “We more than doubled the number of PV home sales analyzed, examined a number of states outside of California, and captured the market during the recent housing boom, bust, and recovery.”

“As PV systems become more and more common on U.S. homes, it will be increasingly important to value them accurately, using a variety of methods,” says co-author Sandra Adomatis, an appraiser who helped develop the Appraisal Institute’s Green Addendum. She noted, “Our findings should provide greater confidence that PV adds a quantifiable premium to a wide variety of homes in California and beyond.”

The growth in home PV systems means realtors need reliable methods to value these homes appropriately. The solar market is still young and many real estate appraisers are not informed about the value of a rooftop solar system, and what it adds to a house. However, Gerard O’Connor, an appraiser on Long Island, says Fannie May has just amended its rules to allow appraisers to include the value of a home solar system when doing a home appraisal. That one change could help boost the number of home solar systems on American homes substantially.

there’s plenty of talk about it in the scientific and farming communities, along with a growing consensus that regeneration is a desirable step beyond sustainability.

Those that are laser-focused on clean food and a better environment believe regenerative agriculture will not only result in healthier food, but could become a significant factor in reversing the dangerous effects of manmade climate change. This centers on the idea that healthy soils anchor a healthy planet: They contain more carbon than all above-ground vegetation and regulate emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

“We have taken soils for granted for a long time. Nevertheless, soils are the foundation of food production and food security, supplying plants with nutrients, water and support for their roots,” according to the study “Status of the World’s Soil Resources,” by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. Most of the world’s soil resources, which also function as the planet’s largest water filter, are in fair, poor or very poor condition, the report states.

Tilling, erosion and chemicals all play significant roles in soil degradation. Regenerative agriculture seeks to reverse that trend by focusing on inexpensive organic methods that minimize soil disturbance and feed its microbial diversity with the application of compost and compost teas. Cover crops, crop and livestock rotation and multistory agroforestry are all part of a whole-farm design that’s intended to rebuild the quantity and quality of topsoil, as well as increase biodiversity and watershed function.

“True regenerative organic agriculture can improve the environment, the communities, the economy, even the human spirit,” says Diana Martin, director of communications for the Rodale Institute, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Rodale, a leader in the organic movement, has been carrying the global torch for regenerative agriculture since the 1970s, when Bob Rodale, son of the institute’s founder, first began talking about it. “He said sustainability isn’t good enough. In the U.S., we are depleting our topsoil 10 times faster than we are replenishing it. We only have 60 years of farmable topsoil remaining,” says Martin.

The institute is working with corporate brands in conducting a pilot project on farms around the world to certify food as regenerative organic. It has three pillars that were created with the help of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program: soil health; animal welfare; and social justice, the latter because people want to know that workers are being treated fairly, Martin says.

It is a new, high-bar label that is very holistic,” says Jeff Moyer, an expert in organic agriculture and the executive director at the Rodale Institute. The pilot phase involves 21 farms with connections to big brands like Patagonia, Lotus Foods and Dr. Bronner’s. “We needed relationships with brands to make this a reality,” Moyer says.

Product should be rolling out by this fall.

“There’s kind of a broad umbrella of things going on,” says Bruce Branham, a crop sciences professor with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “No-till farming certainly is a small step toward regenerative ag, because every time we till the soil, we essentially expose a lot of the carbon dioxide, which burns off carbon.”

Cover crops can be planted right after harvesting a cash crop to help regenerate the soil, adding nitrogen and organic matter, he says: “It is a long-term benefit, so a lot of farmers are hesitant. It takes a while to improve soil fertility through cover crop use.” It doesn’t cost much, but for a corn or soybean farmer making almost no money right now, every expense matters. “The real things we are working on are more toward different cropping systems,” he says, in which farmers are growing perennial tree crops that produce nuts and fruits, absorb carbon and don’t require replanting or tilling.

There’s considerable interest in regenerative organic agriculture in Idaho, as many farmers there have already adopted no-till practices, says Sanford Eigenbrode, a professor at the University of Idaho, who specializes in entomology, plant pathology and nematology. Farmers want to try to improve retention of soil carbon to both stabilize soils and improve long-term productivity, he says.

Conducted by Publisher Damon Damato DD: Why is Qigong Healing so profound compared to other remedial modalities?

JP: “Qigong works directly with your LIFE ENERGY to a greater degree than yoga or traditional exercise by using slower movements. Postures are ‘Rooted’ in one place where grounding and electrical charges build stronger.

Graceful hand motions move the Qi and blood in profound ways while the person is very relaxed. Qigong’s relaxation response allows for greater microcirculation in the frontal lobes of the brain.

DD: You coined the phrase, “Press on Qi!” Why is this emphasized so often in your

DD: How did your father’s work impact you by working in the medical field growing up as a child?

JP: “My dad is a pharmacist at a hospital and he loves people.

He knows pharmaceuticals have side effects and believes in preventing disease using food. At first, my dad didn’t believe in Qigong. Once he felt the energy for himself he began practicing Qigong and studying Chinese medical models. My choice to enter the wellness field was influenced by my dad and his emphasis to a scientific approach. I have a healthy skepticism and present with scientific method.

DD: What was the driving force for you to absorb so much from the most respected masters of Qigong?

JP: “As a graduate from University of Florida College of business, I founded Supreme Science Qigong Center to be successful and took my job seriously. Many Qigong teachers

I found did not provide the training I was looking for. I did a lot of research and found a Qi master, Paul Dong, who wrote a book entitled, ‘Empty Force’. I flew him from China to Florida in 2001, because he claimed to have practiced Qigong every day for over 20 years. We arranged a seminar and I gathered a hundred people to hear Paul share his forms, which were light years ahead of any Qigong learned previously. His presence activated my Qi and I practiced more because of coming in direct contact with him.

After Paul flew back to China I craved to find another Qigong expert who could explain more. Master Weizhao Wu was my most influential teacher for Qigong and he practiced since age 7. Although he passed away, his memory lives in the most excellent posture corrections that he carefully gave. He would open my thumb and relax it so the tendons were not hard anymore. That thumb correction makes a huge improvement to Qi flow and has been passed to my forms.”

DD: Through this process of education and discipline, how long did it take for you to create the Supreme Science Qigong healing forms?

JP: “After 5 years traveling and producing seminars for other Qigong masters, I finally created my Level-1 Qigong Healing Form. It was first published in our books 2003 and only a few dozen instructors memorized it, but by 2007 we had certified a thousand people to teach the routine. Our videos were ‘Qi-Animated’ to show energy graphically and it assisted people in becoming sensitive to energy.

In 2013, we upgraded our Qigong videos to HD animation and in 2017 we finally released our remastered Level-2 video with Ultra HD 4K animation. Spirit continues to reveal better ways for us to share these healing practices.”

DD: Will participants get to experience these Forms at the Qi Revolution Event?

JP: “All 3-levels of our Qigong program are shared in detail along with Breath Empowerment, Nine-Breath Method, Tui Na Acupressure, Foot Reflexology and Food-Healing.

DD: Fitness classes normally get me amped up. Strength Training you share at Qi Revolution challenges me, but it has more mastery of breath than any workout I’ve done. What is significant in your Qigong strength practices for longevity?

JP: “Most important is to slow down breathing in Qigong Strength Training, but most athletes increase respiration when using force. Slowing breathing during pushups changes hormones we make. To demonstrate this relaxing skill during exercises, I performed 750 pushups with twenty students counting and making sure I went up and down all the way. Qi Breathing allows for the ATP to replenish faster so that muscle contractions can occur sooner. This also dilates arteries and increases production of Nitric oxide to lower blood pressure during strenuous exercise.”

DD: If there was one take away at the end of the Qi Revolution, what would you wish for each person to embody?

JP: “The most important embodiment I’d like people to walk away with is that we can BREATHE through life’s challenges and allow God’s Healing Qi to bring strength and guidance.

THE POWER OF TEA

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of

different teas available on the market today.

Which is the best? It depends on how tea is being defined, and the purpose for choosing the drink. There are basically two categories of tea: true tea and herbal tea.

True tea consists of varieties made from leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush, commonly known as the tea tree, tea shrub or tea plant. Such teas include black tea, green tea, oolong tea and white tea, and may have other ingredients added for flavor.

Herbal tea is not really tea at all because it doesn’t contain any tea leaves. Herbal tea is made up of ingredients such as spices and herbs, flowers, fruit, bark, roots and other organic vegetation.

True tea, one of the most popular drinks in the world, second only to water, has medicinal value, and has been shown through research-based data to help the body ward off disease and illness because of the high levels of antioxidants in the leaves. According to BlackTeas.com, Chinese folklore says that tea was discovered almost 5,000 years ago by Shennong, a Chinese Emperor in the 2700s BC. The story goes that a servant of Shennong was purifying water by boiling it for the emperor to drink. Leaves from a nearby tree, which may or may not have been the Camellia sinensis bush, blew into the pot of hot water.

When Shennong tasted the drink, he found it to be enjoyable. Tea was discovered.

Herbal tea does not contain any part of the Camellia sinensis plant, which disqualifies the beverage from being a true tea. Instead, herbal tea is any drink in which

water is infused with the essence of other organic matter, including flowers, herbs and spices. Herbal tea is also known as tisane, which is pronounced tee-zahn. There are two etymologies as to where the word tisane originated. In Greek, ptisanē is defined as a medicinal drink made from barley-soaked water. In French, the word tisans literally means “tea without tea”.

The practice of mixing water with spices and herbs dates back to prerecorded time, especially when preparing it specifically for medical treatment. One of the first recorded entries of the popularity of tea dates back to 1550 BC in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus. Egyptians used tea to pay tribute to the gods, prepare the dead for burial and cure the afflicted. Herbs like dill and basil were prepared into tisanes to help digestion and to aid with heart issues.

With countless plant material combinations, how is it that a comprehensive list of benefits from the many different types of blends came to be? It is believed that Shennong discovered that chewing the leaves and other parts of different plants produced beneficial outcomes for certain maladies. For years, Shennong experimented and made what scholars would today call numerous medical breakthroughs. Apparently, even after chewing on poisonous plants, a combination of certain herbs and spices in water acted as an antidote for the poison.

For the last 5,000 years, tea (whether true tea or herbal tea) has been traveling the world spreading its goodness and healing qualities. Through the years and with discovery after discovery, the list

taxes on the colonists who were building this country under English control. The predominantly tea drinking settlers were outraged by the high tax and revolted against the British. The Boston Tea Party was when tea, valued at almost 10,000 silver pieces, was thrown into the harbor in rebellion of the tax. This event was the catalyst for the American Revolution. Tea was at the center of, and indirectly responsible for, America winning its freedom from England.

With its long history and wide array of uses, tea has become a staple for many around the world. There are as many medicinal benefits of tea as there are different kinds of herbs and plants, flowers and stems, roots and bark on the planet. It is an elixir that can aid in the treatment of, and even cure of, many ailments, conditions and diseases of the body, mind and spirit. Tea’s power is highly regarded in the medical community throughout Asia and Europe, and is becoming more popular in the U.S. as an alternative health device. Its presence in the world is strong enough to even help in the creation of a new country. Perhaps someday, tea will again be the drink of choice for most Americans, either for the great taste or for the medicinal value.

GOOD TO KNOW The Metaphysical Side of Tea Leaves

Ancient Chinese tea drinkers began

to analyze and interpret the shapes and positioning of the tea leaf remnants in the bottom of their tea cups and noticed something remarkable. Reading tea leaves became a method of divination. In the 1600’s, tea became an import throughout Europe, and the practice of foretelling one’s future from tea leaves was carried across the sea and into other expanding continents.

Because of the large number of effects that tea has on the body, tea drinking is regarded as a unique and individual experience. There seems to be a tea that can help with any illness. With so many different combinations, flavors and blends, tea can be made specifically for what someone is seeking—either an enjoyable beverage, a mixture to combat illness and disease, to calm the troubled mind and spirit or to create a metaphysical drink that transcends time and place.

Some believe that because of the individual experience and personal connection to the tea, the drinker influences the movement and ultimate placement and pattern of the leaves. The palette of leaves answers questions about the past, present and future of the person who drank the tea.

Many who participate in the process, either reading or receiving messages, believe that it is the psychic modality, psychometry. This ability allows a person to receive psychic messages from inanimate objects.

Reading tea leaves, however, involves reading an object which was once animate. The leaves were alive at one point and came from a plant that was very much

alive as well. The energy that flows through every living body is interconnected. This connection allows for ethereal knowledge and communication with other planes of existence.

Tea is multipurpose. From beautiful flowers, plants, herbs, bark and roots comes a mystical sensation—tea. Used as the beverage of choice, medical remedy or to foretell the future, tea is known and used the world over, and will continue to reveal its magic to anyone willing to take a sip.
