The HCG Story... The story of HCG began in the Fifties when, after having done research on weight loss for 40 years and research on HCG specifically for twenty years, Dr. Simeons reported that patients taking small amounts of HCG, in conjunction with a very low calorie diet, could lose weight safely and quickly, without exercise, hunger, irritability, muscle injury or weakness. But all HCG is not created equal. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of confusion created by products being sold without guidance that call themselves “HCG” but do not contain any in their ingredient list. HCG is one of 67 hormones naturally produced in the human body, so if a product states that it is hormone free; it is not HCG. Dr. Simeons’ diet protocol ought not to be followed without real HCG. The Pounds and Inches Away program starts with pharmaceutical HCG. HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is not a growth or sex hormone; it does not feminize men or masculinize women. It is not an appetite suppressant, stimulant or vitamin supplement. Nor does HCG produce weight loss by itself. However, in concert with a very specific balanced diet, and our help in avoiding unexpected environmental or behavioral deviations, HCG will allow the body to naturally pull the nutrients and calories needed from stored fat reserves into the blood stream at the rate of 1500 to 4000 calories per day. We are sure that those who follow our protocol WILL lose 20-30 pounds in 40 days. These fantastic results ARE typical with our full service packages. The Pounds and Inches Away program is not your run of the mill “eat less and exercise more” diet for a slow loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week that seems to take the rest of your life. Our protocol tricks Mother Nature a little, maybe, however only natural processes are

at work. Per Dr. Simeons, it is safe and so very effective. At Pounds and Inches Away, we are also excited to be able to offer Whole Kathryn Azhar, Owner Body Vibration and her staff technology by Advanced Healthworks to help people reach their goals. Ten minutes on our “Jiggy” machine produces benefits comparable to those gained in a onehour workout without the sweat and effort of traditional exercise. More than 700 medical studies have been published about the health benefits of Whole Body Vibration. These benefits include improved circulation, increased muscle strength and flexibility, better core conditioning, improved range of motion, enhanced metabolism, increased bone density, and more. The Whole Body Vibration technology has also been used to improve problems with osteoporosis, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, incontinence, arthritis, Parkinson’s’ disease and other conditions. We encourage the use of these machines for their wonderful skin tightening effects. To get slim and stay that way, call our office at (317) 849-THIN today. We will help you reach your weight loss goals and improve your health, appearance and self-image. Nothing tastes as good as THIN feels…

HER NAME WAS CATHY I never knew her, although I wish I had. Her life was not easy. She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 28. When they could not remove the cancerous tumor from the top of her thigh, the doctors were forced to amputate her leg and also remove a portion of her hip. Due to the time and the severity of the amputation, she was never able to wear a prosthesis. She walked again on one leg with the help of metal crutches attached by arm braces to both of her arms. She went through three treatments of chemotherapy, and she lost her hair and her energy too many times to count. Her prayer, through those fifteen years of her battle with cancer, was that she would live long enough to raise both of her beloved children. God granted her prayer petitions; she lost her valiant fight with this torturous form of cancer as her youngest child, a daughter named Erin, was turning fifteen, and her oldest, a son named Ryan, was twenty. Those extra Lisa Adler

years she had to raise her family were truly a miracle. I met her husband after her death through a mutual banker/ friend, who was clearly playing cupid. We Marti Starkey married soon thereafter, and his late wife's story became a part of my story too. She also kept a prayer journal through those difficult years of fighting cancer. Remarking how similar our journals seemed to be, my husband showed me portions of her journal. My eyes were full of tears as I read and was moved by the gratitude with which she wrote. Yes, God had allowed her to suffer physically beyond what we can comprehend, but her heart was full of love and gratefulness for what she was given. In a sense, I do know her, and the gift God gave her of being able to raise her children is evident in each of them. by Marti Starkey

Are You Resilient? Most people who come to therapy have been traumatized by rejection, abandonment and other adversities. When they make their first appointment, they share their story which brings them validation and acknowledgment. I encourage them to feel the feelings, and then I help them to decide how they want their life to be different. Most often, they tell me they want their pain to end. “Ending the pain” requires that they acquire a set of coping skills to strengthen their ability to move on and better their life. Some people seem to be born with a resiliency that allows them to deal with life while others have to learn this skill. I ask myself why do some people succeed while others, who are equally as passionate, falter? Why do some people grow stronger from their adversities while others allow their crises to beat them down? Each person is different, but there are clearly mindsets and strategies that separate the winners from the losers and the successful from the disparaged. When people possess the strength of resiliency they are able to move past their situation and grow stronger. Resiliency is a mindset. You aren't necessarily born with it, but you can learn it by modeling others or cognitively changing your thinking so that you shift from the negative toward the positive. Healthy individuals can weather all sorts of trauma, loss and disappointments if they can rationalize it as a “part of life”. People with little resiliency seem to take disappointment very personally and have difficulty letting go. Assess your resiliency and decide what areas you need to strengthen: • Do you fight change, or embrace it? Do you ask yourself if you can benefit from an experience? This allows you to gracefully accept a change instead of fighting it. Use it to your advantage! • Do you ask yourself what you can learn from a situation so that you will grow stronger and not necessarily repeat the same mistakes? • Do you balance your needs with the needs of others? There will be many 10

opportunities for you to pick the choice that benefits you. How do your decisions affect your environment? We have spent the last two decades focusing on "self". Making healthy decisions means balancing what is best Carol Juergensen Sheets for you with the needs of others. Ask yourself honestly, "Can I achieve this goal without compromising the needs of my loved ones or coworkers?" • Do you know your strengths, gifts, and talents? Do you use them with confidence? As Marianne Williamson says, "Playing small doesn't serve the world." Identify your positive qualities and then use them to define who you are. • Do you accept your imperfections? This often requires that you learn how to work with them. Many people spend their lives hiding from the truth. Acknowledge your weaknesses and develop a strategy to cope with deficits. Working with weaknesses means that you know what areas to work on and you take it to the next level to create a strategy of dealing with it. • Do you build relationships? This requires a mutual give-and-take of energy. Do you regularly spend time fortifying relationships with others? Are you able to ask others for their time and energy? Assess whether you're a giver or a taker, and practice the opposite interaction. Do this with regularity. If resiliency doesn’t come natural, develop the coping skills to maneuver through life. You get to chose whether you give in to the pain or learn from it and let it go. Carol Juergensen Sheets LCSW PCC is a psychotherapist and personal life coach. Where oh where has my energy gone?

Why women in their 40’s gain weight and how we can stop the process. One of the most common reasons for appointments is “I’m gaining weight, but I haven’t changed my diet”. The answer(s) are multi-factorial. As our bodies age, our hormone production diminishes. As women, we begin to add weight specifically to our waists and abdomen. This additional weight is thought to disturb the insulin/glucose relationship. In normal situations, we eat and then the proper amount of insulin is released from the pancreas to allow glucose into the cells, and also leave enough to feed our brains. As we add fat cells, AKA the “extra 10 pounds of the holidays”, our pancreas inappropriately increases the amount of insulin released. This can cause feelings of light headedness, sadness/depression, fatigue, and hunger as our bodies strive to return to the baseline glucose in the blood stream. Together, we can work on combinations

to regain control: Hormone balancing, appetite control, proper nutrition, along with specialized meal replacements that help to minimize the amount of insulin released. Most importantly, we can check for all underlying medical reasons for these problems; including low thyroid, diabetes, adrenal stress, anemia/iron deficiency or chronic illness. Many fad diets merely reduce water weight, or are temporary fixes. Changing the underlying problems, especially by addressing hormone balance, is a much more effective and permanent weight loss. When our bodies possess the optimum hormones we require to maximally utilize all of our metabolic systems, the result is weight loss and an upward spiral that enhances our daily moods. Make an appointment today to recharge your summer!

Money, Money, Money When asked what they want more of, most people say time and money. Last month we talked about time, so this month, it’s about money. There is a great song from the show Mama Mia called Money, Money, Money and the lyrics go like this: “I work all night; I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay. Ain't it sad? And still there never seems to be, a single penny left for me. That's too bad. In my dreams I have a plan; if I got me a wealthy man, I wouldn't have to work at all; I'd fool around and have a ball!” Haha! Well, for most women….that’s not necessarily a great plan or a realistic one. And so many women I meet are sick and tired of being sick and tired. They have been affected by the economy by it downsizing their income, savings or retirement. So how do they even think about more income...where do they begin? You know, somewhere along the way the American Dream has shifted from working hard and creating financial security to overspending and creating massive amounts of debt. That’s the number one reason why people claim they need more money…to pay off debt. Dave Ramsey writes in his book, The Total Money Makeover, “there are only two ways to become financially stable: earn more or spend less.” Imagine what can happen when you do both. Without debt you can save more for retirement, pay cash for the family extras, and use your

money to make a difference for others. Without debt, you can sleep better, worry less and have greater hope for your future. Financial experts such as Ramsey, Suze Orman, David Bach, and Jean Chatzy can provide the tools and teach you how to manage your money resulting in having more by spending less. Women Changing Lives and our partner company can help you add to your income even alongside what you are currently doing. That’s why we love what we do! We have the vehicle to earn more money. We get to help people pay the bills at the end of the paycheck, create their Plan B for retirement, college funds, vacations; become stay at home parents; and yes, get out of debt. We have a proven business model that works. We can say this with conviction, since the company we work with is debt free, GREW by $94 million dollars in 2012, bringing them to over $1.13 billion in annual sales. So if you are one of the many that need more money, call Karen today for your appointment. Karen’s journey includes climbing the corporate ladder for over 15 years, over 120 hours of graduate studies, owning and operating franchise restaurants, and having her own successful business working from home for the last 13 years. SPOTLIGHT

S

Look Your Best at Every Age!

ome people work to live, others love to work.

Although Denise Kaler, Director of Gillum Facial Plastic Surgery, jokes that she "works for airfare" to visit her grandkids in Texas, she absolutely loves her job and can't imagine doing anything else.

“One of our male patients in his late 50s summed it up best, when he said, 'I am at the peak of my career, but age has definitely crept into my life and onto my face,’” Denise recalls, adding that he wanted to explore what was available to help him “restore a more youthful look, one more in tune with my spirit.'”

Dr. Gillum's staff patiently explained the options, from surgery to the latest in injectable fillers and volumizers Denise Kaler, available—with Juvederm, Restylane, Director Radiesse, Sculptra, the most widely used. He opted for Botox to ease the lines in his forehead and fillers to plump up the creases and folds around his nose and mouth. Denise is also proud that she works with a surgeon on the proverbial cutting edge of his field, one who is always “I was both surprised and thrilled with the result,” he told researching the latest breakthroughs intent on bringing Denise. only the very best to his patients—with the help of his Today, he is now very interested in a new procedure called experienced staff. ultherapy. "I work for Dr. Timothy Gillum, a surgeon whose skills are unparalleled and a man with a very compassionate heart,” says the dark-haired beauty. “He is a man on a mission, who travels to Haiti to donate his time and skills to help others less fortunate.”

Every day, Denise meets people who enter the office with a simple wish—to look their best, at whatever age. No way around it: Aging happens to all of us. But contrary to today's youth-centric culture, beauty is not defined by age. When the 59-year-old grandmother is asked about hitting 60, she echoes the sentiments of actress Halle Berry, 46, who said: "Don’t stress about your age or fight it. You’re moving into a new phase of your life—embrace it.” Denise wholeheartedly embraces her next phase and is thrilled to share life-enhancing possibilities with others. "I love the industry I am in,” says the busy clinic director. “Today, people can take advantage of so many nonsurgical options, offering better results with shorter recovery times than ever before.” And contrary to popular opinion, it's not only women seeking a more youthful appearance. According to The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, more and more men are stepping forward to invest in a more refreshed look often at the encouragement of a wife or significant other.

"Ultherapy is a good option for anyone concerned about early signs of aging around the eyes, cheeks, and neck,” explains Dr. Gillum. "This exciting technology is officebased, takes approximately one hour, and has absolutely no down time. Additionally, this focused ultrasound procedure allows for enhanced results when combined with conventional cosmetic surgeries —brow lifts, facelifts, and eyelifts.” Like many patients, he also likes the idea of no downtime and taking advantage of the less invasive procedures before opting for conventional surgery. “I first heard about ultherapy on Dr. Oz and 20/20,” he said. “After talking with Dr. Gillum and Denise, I have decided that this is the next treatment for me. I trust the team at Dr. Gillum's and know I will get a good result.” Denise gets to witness beautiful transformations every day... little wonder she loves her job.

For a complimentary consultation at Gillum Facial Plastic Surgery, call Denise at 317-571-0756.

Demystifying the Colonic

What is a colonic (colon irrigation, colon hydrotherapy)? Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered & temperature-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting Nancy Spahr, in an evacuation through natural Founder peristalsis. This process is repeated throughout the session. Why Should I be concerned about my colon? The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body. We would rather not think about it and most of us don’t until our health becomes poor or we feel constipated or have diarrhea. Colonics best benefit the body due to release of accumulated congestion in the bowel. Is a colonic painful? The infusion of water is very gentle, modest

and a comfortable experience for most people. Occasionally, if your bowel movements have been infrequent, you may feel mild cramping (usually gas) until eliminated. Where does the waste go? Does it smell? No smells! Waste and odors travel through a viewing tube and then goes down the drain, like flushing the toilet. Will Colon Hydrotherapy remove the good bacteria? There’s little research indicating a colonic’s effect on bacteria in the colon. Most people are known to have very acidic colons, full of toxic material that acts as a breeding ground for parasites and pathogenic bacteria. If any good bacteria or electrolytes are eliminated from the colon they can easily be replenished by a probiotic beverage after the session. Colon Hydrotherapy is best used in combination with adequate nutrient and fluid intake as well as exercise. Today’s sophisticated technology promotes both safety and sanitation of this popular cleansing practice.

To learn more about improving your digestive and colon health call Cleansing Waters - a Colon Hydrotherapy and Body Ecology Center dedicated to empowering the individual in reclaiming health and wellness in a natural and sensible manner. 317-259-0796. 24

Your Body, Your Rights: Options following Breast Surgery Women who have had breast surgery deserve the confidence to look and feel their best. If you or a loved one has had a mastectomy, lumpectomy or even reconstruction, you may be entitled to special rights under the Women’s Health & Cancer Rights Act of 1998. Most patients are unaware that under the Act, if your insurance plan covers your surgery, they must also provide certain additional benefits, including reconstructive surgery, full or partial prostheses (breast forms), and related products. And despite its name, the rights under the Act may also extend to women who've had non-cancer-related surgeries. A personalized fitting is an essential step in helping a woman restore her natural symmetry. In 2007, Euphoria Spa & Wellness Center added a full-service boutique to serve the needs of breast cancer patients and other cancer survivors. The boutique offers personalized, discrete service in a spa-like atmosphere. Women can receive custom fittings for breast forms, partial

"shapers," pocketed bras, camisoles and more. Euphoria’s trained fitters typically take a series of three to five measurements to ensure the right fit, and help customers find just the right products to feel comfortable and confident. They work with a wide range of circumstances and needs, and take pride in being able to address even the most challenging of fittings. In 2010, Euphoria expanded its offerings to include wigs, scarves and turbans for cancer patients suffering from medical hair loss, as well as specialized skin care products for those with skin sensitivities, including cancer-related issues. Euphoria is an authorized medical supplier accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABCOP). The most important thing for breast cancer survivors to remember is that they have rights after surgery. Check with your insurance provider to see what is covered under your plan. If you need help exploring your options, the Euphoria staff is available to assist you.

Bio-Identical Hormone Pellets

for Men and Women

WHAT ARE BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES? Bio-identical hormones are derived from plants, such as the Mexican wild yam. Hormones made from yams include estrogen, testosterone, and progesteronewhich are just like the hormones you produced during your reproductive years. HOW DOES THAT CONCERN ME? Men and women gradually produce less hormones starting around 35-50 years old. Reduced estrogen symptoms for women may include hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, forgetfulness and osteoporosis. For both men and women, reduced testosterone may cause a lessened interest in sexual relations, inability to achieve satisfactory orgasms, chronic fatigue and osteoporosis. HOW DO I GET MY HORMONES BACK TO THE LEVELS WHERE I FELT GOOD IN MY 30’s? Gynecologist Dr. David McLaughlin and his Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Kristi Marcella, replace estrogen & testosterone in women, and only testosterone in men. The

34

goal is to achieve youthful levels by inserting the appropriate pellets under the skin, using local anesthesia, in our office. HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT AMOUNT IS RIGHT FOR ME? Hormone levels are measured initially, then after the pellet insertions, with the goal to clinically achieve the optimal levels and desired results. Wellness is promoted with appropriate monitoring to reduce untoward side effects and maximize the mild euphoria many patients experience using pellet hormone replacement therapy. HOW DO I FIND OUT IF ESTROGEN &/or TESTOSTERONE PELLETS ARE RIGHT FOR ME? To determine if you are an appropriate candidate for pellet hormone replacement, please call Dr. McLaughlin’s office, TODAY, by dialing 855.433.6827. START TO LIVE BETTER WITH PELLET HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY! (Free consultations are available to prospective new patients)

What Type of Entrepreneur are You? I’ve read recently that something like 70% of all new small businesses created in the USA by 2018 will be started by women. Many women start businesses that align with personal values and offers freedom and flexibility when it comes to things like scheduling. I believe that the majority of these businesses will find success. Why? Most women become entrepreneurs not necessarily just to make money, but for reasons of the heart! They want to add value in the lives of the people they care about, to make a positive impact on their community and to make the world a better place. The WHY that fuels their passion to succeed is BIG! Do you have the heart for entrepreneurship? An Entrepreneur is a person who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. The word originates from old French, the verb Entreprendre which means to undertake. Here are some examples: Mompreneur: An entrepreneur who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur on a daily basis. Solopreneur: An entrepreneur who works alone, (hence "solo") and runs her business as a one-person-show. A solopreneur may subcontract persons and consultants, yet have full responsibility for the running of their business without an operational team. Soulpreneur: An entrepreneur who has turned her passion into a business, and runs it from the heart, can be described as a soulpreneur. Some examples are women who are in the business of meditation, yoga, massage therapy, life coaching, etc. Youngpreneur: A school-age entrepreneur is often referred to as a youngpreneur -typically used for an entrepreneur who is under 21 years old. Youngpreneurs may

be inexperienced entrepreneurs, trying to get their first fledgling business venture going, or may already be on their way to a multimillion dollar business. Ideapreneur: An entrepreneur who is good at creating new, interesting and innovative ideas, and who can realize them. The ability to take action and move an idea from ideation stage to execution is the key to being an ideapreneur. Intrapreneur: An employee or an executive of a corporation who thinks, acts, and operates with entrepreneurial spirit. An intrapreneur takes direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation. Wanna-be-preneur: A person who talks about ideas for business, talks about owning and running a business enterprise, but never takes the step to do so. A wannabe-preneur may act like an entrepreneur, attend entrepreneur events, talk to others about her ideas, follow and share entrepreneur news; but prefers not to take the risk associated with becoming an entrepreneur - always staying at that ideation stage, and expecting results from it. So, if you have an idea that you believe can make a difference, what are you waiting for? Right here, right now is the best time to start! So, what type of entrepreneur are you?
