Simeon’s Moment to Shine At Simeon's school, each fifth grader must memorize a declamation. They are about 3 minutes long and they had to stand in front of the class and present it. The three fifth grade teachers selected the top 20 of the 90 fifth graders and had them perform the declamation again. From there the top 12 were chosen. Simeon made the top 20 and then the top 12. His declamation was titled "Jack's Big Headache". Once making the top 12 the students performed it for a panel of judges, all the forth and fifth graders in the school. Simeon's declamation was a satire and had puns and jokes in it. I watched him perform his declamation and couldn't be prouder. He was the only student with a hearing impairment and when I reflected on how far we've come and how hard he's worked, it brought a tear to my eye. For him to hit the jokes appropriately, with proper pitch and intonation was amazing to see. In my eyes, he worked so much harder then some of his peers but he takes it in stride. It reminds me of his first days at St. Joseph’s and his first program. It was the Christmas program, he was a sheep and his line was "baaaa!" I was as proud then as I am now! He didn't place in the top three to get a medal but he's first place for me! Submitted by Simeon’s mom Please say “I found it in the IndyKids’Directory!” Thanks!

I began learning Karate when I was a 10 year old and have been training ever since. It has been a big part of my life for the past 16 years. Martial Arts teach skills and a mindset that has been influential in, and improved all aspects of my life. To get better at karate it required being self-aware and the ability to take criticism. On top of learning good self-defense that gave me plenty of confidence, in the beginning I was gaining self-control and discipline making me better as an individual. I didn’t anticipate at first how much of a life long pursuit Karate could be. As I continued to grow I was able to start teaching. Since becoming an instructor, life skills involved with practicing patience, effective communicating, and being able to lead a group have come into focus. Students working
together and teaching each other reinforces not only those skills, but also cooperation and teamwork. I’ve found that when I work for just my own benefit I only get so far, but when I work towards everyone’s benefit I exceed my own expectations. The commitment and dedication to Karate has looked great on college applications and resumes. It’s a good talking point in interviews as well. I didn’t think that it would become a career option or be as beneficial towards other pursuits. I’m incredibly glad I started karate and thankful that my parents encouraged me to continue the entire time. I would recommend Martial arts to anyone. The role models, practical skills, and experiences I’ve gained from our style of karate are invaluable to me.

Decision Making for Kids We all know the parenting can be extremely difficult and one of the tools that can help you in developing your child's ability to make a good decision is a life skill I call using the “Head-HeartGut” exercise. When you think about teaching your children decision-making skills … are you more likely to: • role model how you make decisions • ask them to brainstorm what decisions they might make • ask them what they should do spiritually, • ask them open-ended questions like “what do you think you should do about that?” When I work with children, I help them to formulate the best decision by asking three simple questions. • I ask them intellectually-what do you think? • I ask them emotionally-what do you feel? • And I ask them intuitively-what do you know? This gives kids the ability to formulate a decision based on three very different perspectives in their decision making. What does your head think, what does your heart feel, and what does your gut know? It provides them an opportunity to talk with you about those three choices. When they do that they are often times able to see that at least two of their choices are similar and support each other. This then gives them extra credibility to choose the decision based on their values. Values are typically driven by their intuition hence most often times what they think or how they feel will be in conjunction with what they know, their intuition. Let's look at a couple of common childhood scenarios and see how these
can be broken down. Tommy comes home from school and says that everybody is mean to Matt. They make fun of his ears, they tease him about his size, and they call him stupid. You ask Tommy what he thinks Carol Juergensen Sheets he should do. He says “I want to be his friend.” When asked how he feels, he admits he gets very sad that Max is made fun of and is somewhat scared to stand up for him because he doesn’t want the other kids to make fun of Tommy too. Then when asked what does he know he should do, Tommy says I know I should stand up for him and be his friend even if the other kids won't. In this scenario Tommy's head and his gut are saying very similar things… And as you can see, it's his fear of being made fun of that are keeping him afraid of doing the next right thing. Susie comes home and says she found an MP3 player on the playground. You asked Susie what she thinks she should do? Susie says she's afraid if she returns it no one will claim it and she would like to keep the MP3 player. You ask Susie how she feels about that decision and she says she would feel bad because it is somebody else's MP3 player and if she keeps it they will not know she has it. You ask her what she knows she should do and she says “if it were mine I'd want somebody to return it to the lost and found… I know I should do the same thing.” As you can see. how she feels and what she knows are very similar and that help Susie to decide what she should do. By using this simple formula, it will help children make better decisions. The Head-Heart-Gut exercise teaches kids about values which is what all parents want to teach while helping their children to make good healthy decisions.

Lucas’ Autism Journey
By Lindsey and Kyle N. (Lucas’ Parents) Lucas was a happy toddler who loved playing with trains but at 2 years old he struggled with communicating, eye contact and developmental milestones. Screaming and crying were every day occurrences and seemed constant. He wouldn’t respond to his name and his limited words disappeared. Simple outings were unpredictable and he could not adapt to his environment. We never knew what to expect and the struggle left us frustrated. Reluctant to accept that there were any issues, we took our pediatrician’s recommendation to seek out speech and occupational therapy. He began shortly after his 2nd birthday and by the next year we began to see minor improvements. We knew, however, that many more improvements were needed. His therapists helped us to realize that Lucas needed a specialist. The following spring, our son was diagnosed with Autism. The doctor immediately recommended ABA Therapy. Knowing his struggles with social interactions and new environments, it was difficult to imagine sending Lucas to therapy for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I wanted to believe that everything he needed for his development could be provided by us but eventually we had to face the truth. Thankfully, we found ABC and immediately began to see the changes in Lucas! It didn’t take long to realize that he was at the best place possible. A routine started to emerge which included easier bedtimes and less meltdowns. It was not long before the words started! We began to hear, “Bye. I love you Mom and Dad,” at his morning drop-off. The changes in Lucas are incredible. We saw that our Lucas is able to learn, play
and have fun. Now he loves to say the alphabet, count, and explore books on his own. Early on, he struggled with eye contact and talking to others. Now he loves to introduce himself and meet new people. Outings are now easily handed and even enjoyed! ABC has helped him communicate, build relationships and make friends. He is very affectionate and can’t help but give hugs to everyone-most importantly his little sister. They play cars, trains, dress up and house and love to make each other laugh. The ABC staff has taught us so many tips and tricks along the way. We have learned how to handle difficult situations, redirect problem behaviors and prepare Lucas for changes in his routine. ABC also potty trained Lucas easily and with seamless communication. This allowed us to follow the same steps at home. Transitions from different activities and environments are less stressful on him and easily managed by us. He is able to take all kinds of trips now such as field trips to the zoo and holiday shopping trips to the mall. He also loves swimming at the new therapy pool inside of ABC’s Carmel Center. There was a time when these new experiences would have been overwhelming and scary to Lucas. Now he sees them as fun and exciting. Lucas and our entire family are fortunate to receive the best care, attention and advice that ABC has to offer. The therapists truly love and care about him and he has developed more than we could have hoped, growing every day. He continues to amaze us!

The Customer Service Trap Independent Mothers
It’s a common enough occurrence. We’re in a restaurant, and the table next to us is complaining about their server, their meal, or something that has made them unhappy. A manager is called, and comes over apologetically and offers to pay for their meal. Appeased by the manager, the table happily finishes the meal they’ve been vehemently complaining about leaves the restaurant not even leaving a tip for the server. As a teenager, I had a youth pastor who he and his wife prided themselves on the fact that they never paid for their meals at restaurants. They complained about their meals enough that their meals were always comped. As teenagers, we looked up to them, and we were so impressed by their cleverness. Our moral leaders were telling us it’s OK to cheat the system in order to get a free meal. In my professional life, I’ve run across companies who have had customers threaten to give them a bad online review if they don’t reduce their price. In the customer service industry, employees have become the hostages of the whims of consumers. We know if we threaten to go to social media, and companies, restaurants etc. afraid of those negative reviews will comp or deeply
discount the service they’ve already provided. For many people it’s become a game. They don’t pay for anything because they’ve learned to work the customer service system. We’ve forgot that this clever game affects real humans. It could affect the livelihood of a single parent struggling to make ends meet, who has no choice but to work nights and evenings away from their children submitting to the abuse of unhappy customers. Where every complaint and every meal comped is another pink slip in a file that could force that parent back to collecting unemployment and applying for welfare. Wouldn’t it be such a better world, if instead of looking to benefit from every mistake made, we instead recognize that someone is struggling, and instead of complaining to their manager potentially costing someone their job, we instead offer a word of encouragement or offer twice the tip they would normally get. Wouldn’t that unexpected act of kindness completely turn that server’s bad day around? And maybe, just maybe, if we could start accepting failure in others, we could start accepting failure in ourselves.
