How Do You Define a Great Man? Originally published May, 2010 The Editor is rerunning the following article in memory of Walter I. Taylor, Jr., who passed away on September 7, 2010. He was a great man who exemplifed the words “humility” and “grace” in life, and in death. How do you define a great man?  Is it someone who is a great orator or someone who has amassed great wealth?  Is it someone with immense power, strength or fame?  The Moby Thesaurus II by Grady Ward gives the following, among many, as words for a “great man: baron, celebrity, dignitary, luminary, man of note, mogul, superstar …”  I venture to say that we all have our own ideas, but for me, I know how to define a great man because I have seen it lived out by my dad.   My father was not a great orator.  In fact, I never heard him give a public speech.  Yet, his one-liner words of wisdom carried me through more than a few occasions.  On the eve of my first law school exam, I called my dad, exclaiming that, despite my innumerable hours of study, I was going to forget all of the civil procedure on the exam the next morning.  My dad simply said, “Well, don’t let what you do not know mess up what you do know.”  That little phrase carried me through that exam, as well as many oral arguments in courts since.   My father did not amass great wealth (in the materialistic sense), and yet he has held the respect of an entire community in his and my mom’s Lisa Adler furniture design and interior design business for the last 55 years.

4

Even at the age of 83, and despite his failing health, people still wait in line to have him design and work on their furniture and interiors.

My father never served as the CEO of a huge corporation or held a position of power on a Board of Directors, but he also never missed an event of my sister’s or of mine.  He helped me with my projects, stood coaching me as I ran a track race or swam a swim meet, taught me how to shoot a rifle and a camera, to mention only a few.  More importantly, he taught me how to live life to the fullest; he taught me that strength does not always exhibit itself the way you think, that the race truly is sometimes won by the tortoise, that joy is in the little things, and that there is goodness in every person and in every minute of the day.   My father was an example of true power and leadership from a young age.  He served our country in World War II at the age of 18.  Although he rarely spoke of his wartime overseas, he did recently answer my questions about the many medals of his I found in my mom’s jewelry box.  He was ranked as an Expert Rifleman, which was reserved for the top two percent (2%) of the Marksmen in the Army.  Out of that 2%, the Army picks its Snipers, and my father belonged to that elite group.   My father has shown his strength by the way

0 he loves.  He has been married to my mother for over 62 years, and they still walk hand in hand.  I can recall as if it were yesterday, the morning many years ago when a deep snow had fallen at our home in Evansville, and upon my mother awakening, the words I LOVE YOU were boldly and carefully written in the snow outside her kitchen window.  Although you may find this hard to believe, I never heard my father raise his voice at my mother, my sister or me.  His true humility and integrity are difficult to capture in the written word.

I would not say that my father has had fame in his life either, but I can say that I have loved and respected him every day of my life.  I realize that not all daughters can say this and that his fame may be limited to the extent of our tiny family.  Anytime I have needed a friend, a hug, an encouraging word or a plan for the next step, my father has been there.  He has been my human glimpse of what the love of a Heavenly Father must be.  Yes, I would say my father is the living definition of a great man.                                                                 by Marti Starkey WILLS, TRUSTS, ESTATES, ELDER LAW and RELATED COMPLEX LITIGATION

ARE YOU READY TO DO WHAT IT TAKES? Most of my clients want to actualize self-improvement. They have specific goals but aren’t able to find easy methods to achieve those goals. They want to improve their lives but they end up feeling stuck, as if they aren’t sure what they need to do to affect the desired change. What are your goals? It’s time to take an inventory of your intentions to improve your life. I use the word “intentions” because many people want to see change in their lives as long as the situation changes exactly as the person would direct. As you read this column today, I want you to ask yourself, “What do I want to change in my life?” Follow that question with, “Am I willing to do what it takes to make the needed changes?” Willingness is the toughest part of the change because it involves “doing what it takes” to accomplish the goal. If your closets are a mess, are you willing to get up a half-hour earlier for the next two weeks to complete the job in its entirety? If you want to put your spouse’s affair behind you, are you ready to release your partner from your anger? Are you really ready to let go of your bitterness and rebuild the trust? This undoubtedly means letting go of the anger, resentment and fear that accompanies infidelity. Letting go of old behaviors is typically needed for new goals to be accomplished. I have a client who absolutely hates having sex with her husband because she has felt sexualized all of her life. Although he has spent the last five years abstaining from sex and letting her be the initiator, she continues to maintain that she needs more closeness so they can rekindle that part of their relationship. She wants to find more closeness and do it “her way” and yet “her way” hasn’t been working. Let’s look at people who say they want to obtain a better-paying job. The takehome message is that they are dissatisfied with their income, but the bottom line is that they need to figure out what they 8

need to do to make themselves more marketable. Maybe Carol Juergensen Sheets they need more education or a certification that will make them more money. Perhaps they need to move to a different location. I know you may be saying, “I make $18,000, have three kids, and don’t have time to breathe…let alone go back to school.” The truth of the matter is that your income is not going to get better until you better your circumstances and you can accomplish what seems like the impossible if you sit down and ask yourself, “What do I need to do to make this possible?” Now let’s do an inventory of your goals. Ask yourself: •

What do I want to change?

• Am I willing to do what it takes to make that happen? • What do I need to make the change possible? Give yourself at least 20 minutes and write a response to each of these questions. Next, decide what you need to do to support your goal. Change can be difficult, but instead of procrastination or wanting to do what YOU want to do to make it happen, ask yourself realistically… what will it take to accomplish my goals? Then create the support to make your life different! What you are doing is not working. Isn’t it time to do something different to get what you want out of life? Demystifying the Colonic

Nancy Spahr, Founder

What is a colonic (colon irrigation, colon hydrotherapy)? Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered & temperatureregulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in an evacuation through natural peristalsis. This process is repeated throughout the

session. Why Should I be concerned about my colon? The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body. We would rather not think about it and most of us don’t until our health becomes poor or we feel constipated or have diarrhea. Colonics best benefit the body due to release of accumulated congestion in the bowel.

Is a colonic painful? The infusion of water is very gentle, modest and a comfortable experience for most people. Occasionally, if your bowel movements have been infrequent, you may feel mild cramping (usually gas) until eliminated. Where does the waste go? Does it smell? No smells! Waste and odors travel through a viewing tube and then goes down the drain, like flushing the toilet. Will Colon Hydrotherapy remove the good bacteria? There’s little research indicating a colonic’s effect on bacteria in the colon. Most people are known to have very acidic colons, full of toxic material that acts as a breeding ground for parasites and pathogenic bacteria. If any good bacteria or electrolytes are eliminated from the colon they can easily be replenished by a probiotic beverage after the session. Colon Hydrotherapy is best used in combination with adequate nutrient and fluid intake as well as exercise. Today’s sophisticated technology promotes both safety and sanitation of this popular cleansing practice.

SPOTLIGHT

The story of HCG began in the Fifties when, after having done research on weight loss for 40 years and research on HCG specifically for twenty years, Dr. Simeons reported that patients taking small amounts of HCG, in conjunction with a very low calorie diet, could lose weight safely and quickly without Kathryn Azhar, Owner exercise, muscle loss or and her staff hunger. But all HCG is not created equal. The Pounds and Inches Away program starts with pharmaceutical HCG. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of confusion created by products being sold without guidance that call themselves “HCG” but do not contain any in their ingredient list. HCG is one of 67 hormones naturally produced in the human body, so if a product states that it is hormone free. HCG does produce weight loss by itself. However, in concert with a very specific balanced diet, and our help in avoiding unexpected environmental or behavioral deviations, HCG will allow the body to naturally pull the nutrients and calories needed from stored fat reserves into the blood stream at the rate of 1500 to 4000 calories per day. We are sure that those who follow our protocol WILL lose 20-30 pounds in 40 days. These fantastic results ARE typical with our full service packages. The Pounds and Inches Away program is not your run of the mill “eat less and exercise more” diet for a slow loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week that seems to take the rest of your life. Our protocol tricks Mother Nature a little, maybe, however only natural processes are at work. Per Dr. Simeons, it is safe and so very effective.

Carolyn's Story

After

About a year ago, I’d given up on ever losing the weight I had put on over the past 10 years. I Before tried everything out there and nothing worked. One day I saw an ad for Pounds and Inches Away in Castleton. I called them and decided to try their HCG Weight Loss Program.

The HCG Story... I started the program in September of 2012and was amazed how easily the weight came off. The staff at Pounds and Inches Away were very supportive and helpful. They were always available to answer my questions. They even called me to help with my accountability. Yes, I had to follow the program, but with their direction I was able to lose weight and keep it off. I completed two rounds between Labor Day 2012 and Easter 2013 – and I lost 52 lbs. Losing the weight made me realize – I wasn’t as old as I felt! My blood pressure is down, my cholesterol is improving. My health, overall, is significantly improved from a year ago. It wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it. I feel alive again and it’s all because I walked into Pounds and Inches Away Castleton and let them get me started on a new path.

Hilton's Story

After I was significantly overweight. My doctor was concerned that my weight Before After would cause Before certain health problems as I aged. Pounds and Inches Away helped me lose 70 pounds over the course of six months! I found the program during the first 40 days to be easy and safe. I learned to eat much healthier and that was something my wife and I wanted to do for years. I followed the suggested meals, measuring the protein consistently. I had an apple as a snack in the afternoon or evening as well as learned to drink water. The maintenance period offered the opportunity to get reintroduced to some of the other foods that I liked, but in moderation. I have been able to maintain my weight since stopping with the drops. One highlight is that I have not had a Coke or Pepsi in over 19 months! Kathryn and her team are very supportive and helpful. The Pounds and Inches Away regime works, is safe, and you will love the results! To get slim and stay that way, call our office at (317) 849-THIN today. We will help you reach your weight loss goals and improve your health, appearance and self-image. Nothing tastes as good as THIN feels…

Shelly Aristizabal Business Women Connect

Happy New Year!

by Shelly Aristizabal

Every year you set new goals for yourself. If you’re like most Americans, by February, your resolve is waning, and by May you don’t even remember your resolutions. Then, on Dec. 31, you berate yourself saying, "How did I waste a whole year?" This IS Your Year to Design & Live the Life of Your Dreams! Pick only two or three strategies from the list below and implement them today. Then, instead of scolding yourself on Dec. 31, 2014, you’ll be able to say, Look how much I accomplished this year! Ok, you have a big goal, what are you going to do with it? Ink it. You’ve heard it before, but the truth is writing down your goals forces you to get clear about what you want. Use a pen and paper (you can transfer it to your computer later). That simple physical act helps cement the desire in your brain. Replace it. One way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one. What can you choose to add to your life that will fill the void left by eliminating a bad habit? For example, replace TV time with family time, candy with fresh fruit, talk radio with inspiring audios. Speak it. Talking about your goal—even if it seems huge and impossible—allows others to encourage and help you by providing resources and information you may need. Baby it. Even small baby steps taken toward your goal consistently will move you in the right direction. Once you experience a few small wins, taking bigger steps becomes easier.

Take it BIG. Don’t take all year to do what you can accomplish in a day. Once you’ve written down your list of goals for the year, figure out which goals could be accomplished this month—or even today. Decide and Just Do it. Mental hurdles may keep you from making decisions and taking action. Get over it! Make a list of all the reasons you want to accomplish your stated goal. Refer to that list when indecision or inaction threatens to take control. Accountability. Even if you don’t share the same goal, having a “success partner” can keep you accountable. Meet weekly (in person or by phone) to check in on and encourage each other. Celebrate your successes. Every time you reach a milestone, acknowledge your accomplishments in a positive way. For example, if you drop a dress size, buy a new outfit. If you pick up a new client, have dinner with a mentor. Celebrating your success will keep you focused on the larger goal. Still need more help? My book, “This is Your Year to Design & Live the Life of Your Dreams” will take you on a page a day journey with 365 days of inspiration, information and ACTION steps. Move from dreaming a dream to actually living it! Stop dreaming and start living! 2014 This IS Your Year! Order today at www.ThisIsYourYearBook.com.

f you have ever cared for an aging or disabled loved one, you know that having a support system - a place where your glories, challenges and concerns are known when you walk in the door – is not only important, but critical. Joy’s House is just that place. Located on the north side of Indianapolis, Joy’s House is a not-for-profit adult day service with a special focus on supporting family caregivers. And while the daily care for the Guests who rely and count on Joy’s House is central of the organization’s mission, the newly launched Caregiver Support and Education

programs created by Joy’s House deserve discussion. A Day Away Caregiver Retreat is offered by Joy’s House twice a year. This is a one-day retreat designed to empower, educate and pamper caregivers. Art Therapy Programs are offered to current families and are led by a licensed art therapist, allowing them to address everyday life with psychotherapeutic goals in mind. Kits designed for caregivers called CARE Kits are also available.
