Springtime Language Lesson! April showers bring May flowers and with that is the chance for us to all get outdoors with our children! With the change in the season and warmer weather, it is a great time to have an outdoor scavenger hunt while increasing your child’s listening and spoken language skills. Have you ever been outside on a trail and just listened? You can use this opportunity to work on your child’s descriptive language while playing a game outdoors. A great way to work on increasing their working memory, which will foster future problem solving and reading comprehension skills, is to give them 3 or 4 clues about what you saw or heard. For example, “I saw something that is blue, has feathers, flies in the sky and builds a nest. What do you think I saw?” Allow your child the time to process the
information before repeating yourself. After a couple of adult clues; your child may want to flip the role and give you descriptions of what they saw! When you come inside from your outdoor scavenger hunt, it is a perfect time to work on your child’s receptive language skills of recalling what you each described. You can even write them down and keep a running list, or have your child draw pictures of what you saw and write down the corresponding clues. In doing so, you are making your own experience book that your child can read to other family members or friends. Get outdoors and have fun developing your child’s language in a natural way!

Showing Love to Your Children Parents are always asking what they can do to increase their child's sense of selfesteem. I quickly affirm a concept I learned when I read the Five Love Languages of Children by Dr. Gary Chapman. In his book he references that there are five primary ways that your child will show love and desire love. These five methods of showing love include: words of affirmation, gifts, physical touch, quality time, or acts of service. One of the ways that you can determine how your child shows his or her love is in how he demonstrates that to you. Take a moment and think about how your child conveys his love. Does he show you love by saying nice things to you, telling you that he loves you, telling you that you're pretty, or saying you're the best mommy or daddy in the entire world. If so, your child more than likely endorses words of affirmation as a way to show his love. This means that one of the best ways that you can show your love is by telling him how special he is to you. Perhaps you have a child who brings you gifts. In the spring he finds the prettiest flowers in the yard and bring some to you. He may draw you a picture and want it displayed on the refrigerator. He may make you paper gifts and give them to you and excitedly await your reaction. If your child gives you things to show his appreciation, he likely will benefit from you giving him things that show that you love him too. Some children seem to really love physical touch. They want mommy or daddy to sit next to them. Perhaps he wants you to cuddle before bedtime. He seems to long for those kisses and hugs and eats it up when
you stroke his hair. This child is more than likely someone who feels very secure when he receives love in physical ways. Other children may gravitate towards doing things for you. They seem to receive extra Carol Juergensen Sheets pleasure when they've helped you with chores. A child who wants to help with the housework is a child who has figured out that doing things for mom or dad makes them feel loved. Watch for signs that they are "your little helper." Consequently, they will likely want you to do things for them. When you do things for your child, you will be solidifying your love. Some kids have a need for quality time. Is it important for your child to spend special time with you? Does your child vie with his siblings for one-on-one time? Is he always the first child to request that you go outside and play with him? Is he keenly aware of the amount of time the other siblings get with you? More than likely this child has a special need to be loved by having quality time with you. This means to increase his sense of selfesteem and sense of love; you will need to use quality time to show him how much you love and appreciate him. It's always fun to watch your child for a period of 24 hours to determine what his/ her primary love language is although taking the test online or via the book will confirm your observations. The book will help you reinforce what you can do to give that all important message that your child... no matter what his/her age.... is always loved by you!

Healing through Arts and Education Throughout COVID-19, Ascension St. Vincent has adapted and enhanced existing programs and services to ensure that patients and healthcare heroes are cared for in mind, body, and spirit. Here are highlights of the good work being completed by two programs thanks to donor support of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation. The Healing Arts Program at Ascension St. Vincent is dedicated to promoting holistic healing through a combination of visual art, music and dance/movement interventions. The program has expanded its normal efforts to support healing throughout COVID-19. • Positivity Boards were introduced around the hospital to bring color, encouraging messages, and uplifting information to patient units. • A fun “Sneeze, Blow, and Throw” song was created to teach hospitalized children the ways to keep themselves and other people safe when they sneeze or cough. • Legacy Prints have been made to help comfort families who lost a loved one to COVID-19, including a digital thumbprint to be shared with family members as a lasting memory. In addition to helping patients, the Healing Arts Program also supports Ascension St. Vincent associates through activities that provide encouragement and stress relief. Along with spiritual care teams, the Healing Arts Program introduced a new “Code Lavender” protocol to provide focused support for associates when they have been involved in a stressful event at the hospital. Carts have been placed in units and include items such as art materials, aromatherapy, scripture, meditation guides, deep breathing exercises, and resources for virtual support. Another crucial program funded by the 14
supporters of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation is the School Program at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. This program addresses the educational needs of many patients who are missing time from school as a result of their hospitalization through an on-site school program. The comprehensive assistance provided by the school program helps provide a sense of stability to patients as they battle their respective health issues. The ultimate goal is for all patients who require educational instruction or assistance during their hospitalization to successfully re-acclimate to their home schools with minimal difficulty. When COVID-19 shut down schools in the spring, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital’s licensed teacher, Heather Wiselogle, began to teach remotely, using tools like Zoom and Skype. She developed creative ways to engage students and continued seeing as many students online as she was seeing in person. Through the Paws to Read program, students were able to read their favorite books to therapy dogs virtually. Heather also helped some high school seniors as they were dealing with the challenges of both online learning and their own health conditions during their final semester. She wrote letters of recommendation for scholarships and assisted with requests for accommodations for college. Funding of programs like Healing Arts and the School Program is crucial in supporting the needs of our patients and healthcare heroes. To learn more about Healing Arts, the School Program, and additional programs funded by the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation, visit give.stvincent.org or call 317-338-2338.
