Your Challenging Kid Does your child fail to accomplish the goals that you know he or she is capable of, and for the life of you, you just can’t figure out why? Do you have a “challenging child” who is having difficulty following the rules? Perhaps he does not seem responsive to the natural consequences that you impose with regularity? You may even know what it is like to have a child who excels and seems to be assimilating well with his friends, in the neighborhood and at school. This further confuses you because you have compared your parenting skills and you know that you handled both children in similar ways. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about parenting is that many of the parenting techniques that you believe in have not work with your “challenging child”. Now we all know that parenting is trial and error and each kid is truly different. You couldn’t possibly treat them the same, because they aren’t the same. There may have been times that you made choices that were actually better for “the challenged child” and yet it seemed to have no impact. The reality is that children oftentimes have inherited personality characteristics from earlier generations that play into their sense of identity. Some children are born with that drive to achieve while others seem to chronically underestimate their abilities. Children that are challenging or underachievers may not have the resiliency skills to know how to do better. How do you guide them down the right path? Much of that depends on their age and circumstance. If you have a child who is having difficulties and they are preschool or elementary age, you will need to set up an infrastructure that enables others to share the same values and role model the behavior you would like to reinforce. • Get them involved in Brownies or Scouts to learn important values? • Enroll them in a Sunday School (despite

their difficult child status) so that they can watch other kids conform even if they choose not to. • Hook them up with an adult who can spend Carol Juergensen Sheets concentrated amounts of 1 on 1 time to reinforce the rules of life. • Role model areas that you want to improve and ask them to help you to get up earlier, clean your closet, make more dinners at home. Ask them to be your accountability coach! If they are ages 13-18, the major interventions are to: • Encourage any effort the child makes to do the right thing. Noticing the effort reinforces positive behavior and it provides the foundation for success. Don’t get discouraged when they show some promise and then fall short of displaying that behavior again. It’s all part of their process. • Create consequences that fit the misbehavior. Be consistent. Don’t give them a consequence for one infraction and let them slide the next time. • Be creative. Employ any adult who has significant contact with your child to reach out and take an active part in their life. Whenever you use the team approach you have increased your chances for successful intervention. No matter what age, many children will eventually figure life out and stop sabotaging themselves. They may indeed never turn out to live up to what you consider to be their potential, but they live a life that is comfortable for them. So don’t beat yourself up, be consistent and creative and most importantly…keep the faith. Your job is to support them while they learn from life!

Fun at Restaurants Your mother may have told you not to talk with your mouth full, but restaurants are a great place to develop language in young children! Some parents allow screen time while waiting for food, but having a child on a screen means they miss out on the experience of interacting with people, which is part of what dining out is all about! Here are some ideas to get the language learning going: • Have your child tell their order to the waiter or cashier, even if it is only telling them their drink order. It is important to have your child experience talking to a variety of listeners in safe environments. • Play ‘I Spy’ games while waiting for your food. “I spy something yellow.” “The mustard!” This teaches them to describe items

by function and appearance. • Bring small toys the child can play with, and use items at the table to build upon their play. Sugar packets make great train tracks or food for animals, while half and half containers can be used for building a city. • Include your child in meal preparation. Talk about different actions as they help stir sugar into your coffee, spread the cream cheese, or shake the pepper. • See if your child can find certain letters or numbers on the menu. • At home, set up a pretend restaurant and use baby dolls and stuffed animals as customers. Teach the child to role play being the waiter, chef, customer and cashier. Enjoy making the most of mealtime! Ethan’s Story

When you become a parent, you have wonderful hopes and dreams of the person your child will become. You can’t wait for their first smile, first word, crawl, walk, even sleep through the night. As they grow, you hope to have bragging rights to all of their firsts. Then you start to notice that they are not like their peers developmentally. That is what happened with my sweet boy, Ethan, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder at the age of 4. When you sit across from someone and hear those words, it can be heartbreaking. You learn to fight for anything and everything they need.

When we made the decision to enroll Ethan into the Brain Balance Center of Indianapolis, this was our last resort. I would learn that it should have been our first. For years, we had gone to multiple doctors and therapists, each time walking away never really feeling complete or like we were getting anywhere with his treatment. I had started to come to terms with the fact that Ethan may always need to live with me. That even though he could make great strides, he would always need that extra support. Since starting Brain Balance, Ethan has had significant improvements in his behavior, social interactions and overall sensory functions. He has learned to advocate for himself. We eliminated 2 of the 3 medications he was on. He is confident, has friends, enjoys being around others and smiles. The best part is that for the first time Ethan wants to sincerely hug me! I have bragging rights now, and I owe it all to Brain Balance.

Kids love to create art and while any art class can (and should) encourage your child’s creativity, at Myart, we know there is much more to drawing and painting than just putting paintbrush to paper. Our unique method of teaching children how to draw and paint allows Myart students to create art that goes far beyond your average art class.

And the learning at Myart doesn’t end with art. Myart students not only learn how to successfully draw and paint, they develop essential thinking and creative problem solving skills, increase their ability to focus and concentrate, and discover increased confidence through their accomplishments at Myart.

Children at Myart learn how to break a drawing down into its smaller parts through guided step by step lessons. Myart instructors work one on one with each child, demonstrating how to use the different art mediums, from graphite and colored pencil to pastels, watercolors and acrylics. At Myart, we don’t just give your child paper and paint and tell them to create, we teach them how. Myart students learn the skills, techniques and craftsmanship that has enabled many of our students to go on to careers in art.

And, best of all, Myart is fun! Our weekly classes provide students with a never ending array of subjects to draw and paint. For those who can’t commit to weekly classes, we offer canvas painting events, birthday parties, and scout activities along with themed fall and spring break camps and summer art camps including cartooning, animals, fantasy and more. To learn more about Myart or to register for any of our classes or camps, please visit us at www.myartindy.com .
