Braydon’s Story
Braydon, 10, has always been a very happy and positive child, but he struggled a little too much in school. He was still an average student with solid C’s with an occasional D+ or B-. He did not like to read, had difficulty with Math story problems, poor handwriting, and was horrible at taking notes. Through the work here at Brain Balance he has become a different student.
Within the first four weeks he made such improvements that even his teachers were asking what we did. With a few simple exercises he practiced at home plus the work at the achievement center his grades jumped to All A’s with the occasional B. He went from hating to read to reading every book he could get his hands on. The turnaround was amazing! While working with his school during his annual I.E.P. (Individual Education Program) the compliments just flowed on what an amazing change in his school work! He had improved so much that some of the help he was receiving was no longer needed. A long with the improved school work his confidence and self esteem has rocketed. Shannon & Raoul, mom & dad

The Self Esteem Game Children need to have their beliefs, thoughts and feelings validated. More often than not you may notice your son or daughter feeling disheartened about a choice they made or a grade they got. I know you may say….”I wish that was my child…he doesn’t seem to care whether he makes A’s or F’s” but the truth of the matter is that 99% of all kids want to excel and if they send you the message that they don’t… it is because they come from a place of not feeling “good enough.” They have developed that hard exterior to hide their vulnerable feelings. I encourage parents to play the self-esteem game with each other and their children to increase the awareness of how often we are negative with our thoughts. The game goes like this: • During a family meeting, a ride in the car (when you have them captive) or a family dinner, you state your intention that the family is going to help each other have kinder, gentler thoughts. • When a family member hears someone say, “I am stupid,” or “I can’t do that,” or “Nobody likes me” the family member is to give the time out sign and say nothing more. • The parent or child is expected to restate the sentence in a kinder, gentler, way. I encourage Mom or Dad to make sure to have some examples that they can use to role model how to turn around a negative statement. This might look like the following: Mom asks Tommy to pick up his clothes and then she says, “What does it matter, you never listen to me anyway!” Dad would time her out and Mom might restate the issue by saying, “Tommy I would like you to pick up your clothes. I have made a very important request.” OR
Jessica asks for a new Xbox and Dad replies, “Jess, I am not made of money. The only time you are nice to me is when you are asking for something.” A timeout is given and Dad restates his position. “Jessica, I know a new Xbox is important to you and I am really good at brainstorming so Carol Juergensen Sheets let’s work together and figure out how YOU can make that happen.” Perhaps Mom hears Tiffany telling her friend, “No one will play with me at recess…No one likes me!” The timeout is given and Tiffany has to restate that and says, “I may feel lonely on the playground but I am good at making friends.” This skill teaches your children that they will be more successful if they are more positive about how they see themselves. Take advantage of negative self talk to instill opportunities for children to see their strengths and not rest on what they believe are their weaknesses. Developing the skill of positive self-talk is critical to good self-esteem. But it doesn’t just happen. Parents have to teach children how to practice the skill and work at it diligently. How would confidence be affected if your family participated in daily activities like the self-esteem game to remind each other of one’s strengths and the things that are working well in everyone’s life as opposed to what might not be going as planned? Learning to use kinder, gentler thoughts is a great family exercise and will create a sense of self-esteem that feeds mastery which will reap many positive rewards. Besides helping your children, it will also get you to be kinder to yourself too!

Nate & Ethan: The story of twin on the Spectrum by Carrie S. (mother to Ethan and Nate)
‘As I stare at this blank page on my computer screen and think about what I want to say about how the Applied Behavior Center has affected my family, I can’t imagine how I will ever get words to accurately reflect the depth of my gratitude for the work they do. My now ten year old twin sons have been attending ABC for five years. We have all heard the saying, “If you meet a child with autism you have met one child with autism,” those words could not be truer for us. Genetically they are twins but the way autism has affected them and the challenges it creates for each could not be more unique. Between the two boys we have dealt with aggression, disruptive stemming behaviors, elopement (also known as running away), safety in public settings, toilet training issues, grooming problems, general compliance, on and on the list goes. If there is an “undesirable behavior” on the spectrum we have probably seen it at some point. As these challenges come and go in our everyday lives, our program coordinator, therapist and team leaders have been right there to help us develop and implement a plan. That’s really what stands out about ABC. I know there are centers all over the state that practice behavior therapy and they are probably filled with caring and dedicated professionals; but I can’t imagine any place having a team like ABC North. I never thought I would find a place where I would be okay sending my boys for a majority of their day - people whom I would trust enough to relinquish some of my control. But that is exactly what has happened. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that every day my children are surrounded by people who love and care for them and that want exactly what I want, which is for my boys to reach their full potential. As an autism Mom, there are days I feel like a complete failure. Maybe we are running late
or wearing clothes that don’t match or I am dropping the kids off and it’s obvious I haven’t even brushed my hair yet and I’m feeling frazzled beyond redemption before my day has ever actually begun, yet the team leaders are at the front desk with a smile and a laugh to help me see the humor in our chaos. They reassure me that the day is not ruined and that concessions can and will be made to get everyone back on track. Then there are those program coordinators, those tenacious fighters who spend countless hours collecting data, writing programs, and most importantly fighting insurance companies to make sure that the kiddos are getting every hour of services possible and that everyone one of those hours counts and enriches their lives. And the people in the trenches, the therapists, who show up every day and, with endless patience and kindness, who work with their patients. I know ours have been pinched and hit and scratched and tackled and LOVED. I know without a doubt in my heart that my boys love their therapist. Even if they can’t express it, I know they feel the level of commitment that the therapists have to them and they appreciate them as much as I do, even if they never master the words and actions to show it. I can remember the first time my son asked me “How was your day, Mom?” or the first meal we ate in a restaurant as a family that did not end in complete disaster, the first long car ride that didn’t include a bathroom accident. I could write a book of firsts, of things the boys have accomplished since starting at ABC and I will forever be grateful for every single accomplishment and skill learned. But that is not ABC to me. To me, ABC is the place where we have found hope, acceptance, dedication, friendship, peace and yes, even love. As a special needs family, that is the Holy Grail!’

AUTISM PARENT CARE (APC) ABA PROGRAM
By: Denise Hubble, MA, BCBA and Karen Lake, MA, ABA Therapist THERAPY LASTS 8 HOURS EACH DAY. EVERY MINUTE BRINGS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TEACH OUR CLIENTS.
At APC we combine a variety of settings which provide a balanced program that maximizes the rate of learning for our students. Montessori school is in the morning, until noon. The program for your client is designed from initial assessments that pinpoint communication deficits. APC therapists follow the Montessori philosophy of letting the child discover on their own, as much as possible. After school is a time to focus on gross motor deficits and social skills. The activities should be fun to give our students a break after school. Taking turns and learning conversation skills, as well as becoming more physically coordinated are the focus of this time. Lunch and nap is an ideal time to teach 20
manners and early life skills. The client should be encouraged to complete any part of getting their lunch as they are able. Your student might have a target on opening and closing jars or baggies, for instance. This can be easily practiced and recorded at this time. ABA Therapy The traditional way to teach during ABA therapy is called Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT). DTT is a fast-paced presentation of stimuli to help develop quickness in the thought process. DTT uses errorless teaching so the student does not practice a wrong answer. Prompts are given before it appears the client will produce the wrong response. Reinforcers are present and used often when a new target is introduced. As the skill becomes easy more must be produced before the reinforcer is presented. As the relationship develops between you and your student, time with you becomes a reinforcer.
