Camp EAGLE: Summer, Sun, and Social Skills! Angelica N. Gray, MA, BCBA Clinical Director, TIIBA

We are now enrolling for Camp EAGLE. Camp EAGLE is a summer day camp for individuals who are diagnosed with Autism. We provide ABA Therapy in a camp format. Our campers typically have so much fun, that they don’t realize they’re learning new skills! Camp days are filled with opportunities to increase social and communication behaviors. We take advantage of these opportunities in multiple settings within our center–groups, our simulated classroom, and 1:1 work stations. Additionally, we take what we learn in the center and apply it out in the community. There are two weekly outings to places such as local parks, bowling alley, water parks, The Children’s Museum, music centers, Sky Zone, Monkey Joe’s, Conner Prairie, and more! Our summer program is an excellent way to keep your child engaged and learning throughout the summer months. In addition to focusing on social and

communication behaviors, we target functional academic skills, daily living behaviors, and work on decreasing maladaptive behaviors. We encourage parent involvement throughout our summer session. Parents are welcome to come and observe their child and meet with the clinical team to learn the strategies and techniques that are utilized within the camp. In addition, we have TIIBA Family Days scheduled for the Indianapolis Zoo and Eagle Creek Park. Our enrollment is limited and open through April 30th. Camp dates are Monday, June 5th through Friday, July 27th. Camp hours are from 8:30a – 4:00p, Monday through Thursday; 8:30a – 12:30p on Friday. Each camper’s schedule may vary between these hours depending on specific needs and recommended number of hours per week. Most major insurance and Medicaid are accepted. Call us at 317-388-8131 to begin your enrollment process!

Is Your Child’s Speech on Track?

May is Better Hearing and Speech

month. This is the month when everyone is talking about their child’s speech and language development. But what is “normal” speech and language development? How do you know if your child is on track or needs a little extra help? Speech is how your child says sounds and words. Articulation is how a child makes the speech sounds using their mouth, lips and tongue. Even before your child says their first words to communicate their needs and wants, they communicate through coos, cries, smiles and giggles. During the first year of life, babies use sounds to communicate when they are happy or sad. They use gestures to indicate they want something to happen or need something, imitate speech sounds and babble long strings of words (ex: mama, upup, bababa). Between 12 months and 24 months of age, children begin to put two words together, ask wh-questions (ex: Where is Daddy? Who is that? What’s that?) to gain information and consistently produce the sounds p, b, m, h and w. Becoming your child’s narrator is the most helpful thing you can do for your child at this time. For example, “Look, I see the cow. He says moo. The cow is eating grass.” It is essential to follow your child’s lead and expand on their utterances so you can teach them how language works. For example, your child says “cat” you could say, “I see the orange cat. He says meow.” During 24 months and 36 months of age, a child produces the sounds k, g, t, d, and n in words, uses 3 words when talking and

begins to ask Why questions. Hearing plays a significant role in a child’s ability to develop appropriate speech and language skills. During the first 12 months of age, a baby recognizes their parents’ voices, turns their head to locate sounds, turns when you call their name and responds to simple phrases such as “no”, “want more?” and “all done”. Between 12 months and 24 months, your child enjoys listening to books and points to objects in books when they are named, follows 1-step directions and answers simple WH questions (“Where’s your shoe?” ,“Who is that?”). At this stage, children are highly engaged in books and are interested in what a parent is saying. Take this opportunity to read to your child every night before bed! During the next two years, your child begins to understand and follow two-step directions, understands opposites (go-stop, openclosed, big-little) and hears you calling them from a distance and other rooms of the house. What questions should you ask yourself to see if you need to seek a speech and language evaluation? Every baby in Indiana has a newborn hearing screening , if your child failed the screening it is essential that you follow up with further testing. However, during the first 12 months you should ask yourself does your baby respond to sounds? Do they follow directions? Are they babbling? Do they respond when you call their name? A child’s ability to hear can affect how they produce sounds. We all find it cute when a toddler says “nana” for banana. However, if it continues after they are 36 months, it could be a sign that they need a speech evaluation. If you have questions about your child’s speech and language development , ask your pediatrician and seek out more information. You are your child’s best advocate!

May April 25 – May 13 Wicked at Old National Centre. Back by

“Popular” demand. Variety calls Wicked "a cultural phenomenon,” and it continues to break box office records and sell out in record time. Winner of over 100 international awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One—born with emerald green skin—is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete—and completely satisfying— new musical in a long time" (USA Today).

Wednesday, May 23, 10:30am Zoopolis 500 - Presented by American Dairy Association at

Indianapolis Zoo located in White River State Park. Tortoises, start your engines! Thanks for joining us for the 38th annual "running" of the Zoopolis 500 presented by the American Dairy Association Indiana. Held annually the Wednesday before the Indianapolis 500, this unique Zoo event

and race fan favorite includes a morning of family-friendly pre-race festivities leading up to our radiated tortoise race to the finish. Each year, guests can cheer on their favorite tortoise as they race up, down and around the straight track! But these natives of Madagascar aren't racing for a trophy. Instead, they're after the delicious fruits waiting in the winner's circle. As they race down the course, see if you can catch a glimpse of their beautifully marked shells, which have star-patterned stripes radiating from the center (hence their name). Because of these markings, radiated tortoises are considered to be one of the world's most beautiful tortoises. After the race, meet the winning tortoise and his "pit crew" after the Winner's Circle. Our Zookeepers would be happy to answer any tortoiserelated questions and tell you all about our efforts to help these endangered animals. If you would like your event included in our monthly calendars, submit it by going to wwwIndyKidsDirectory.com

Principles That Teach Mastery When I talk to parents about raising their children, they express fear that the culture and peers seem to have too much of an impact over them. But, they can influence their child by role modeling healthy thoughts and behaviors, teach them how to react to the outside world and show them ways to deal with life so that they have confidence in themselves and the world around them. There are several practices that can teach your children how to master their life circumstance. You share with them that you are going to create a ritual to promote feeling good about the world which will help them feel good about their situation. You want to do it for a full 30 days because good habits and practices need 30 days to make a difference and train the brain to think differently. You explain that every morning when you are feeding your child some breakfast or driving your child to school, you will be asking them for 3 things that they are grateful for. Each day they must come up with 3 NEW things. That may be a simple as I am grateful for the 75-degree day, the clean water we drink, my best friend Justin, or my dog Boo Bear. You as the parent start out the scenario and then wait for the kids to follow suit. If you have a child who is in a particularly bad mood and does not want to share you let it pass as you and the others have shared their thoughts and you will be sending a positive message regardless of participation. Kids can face a lot of anxiety when they are amid peer pressure and competition at school, with their friends or in sports. As a parent, you have the awesome ability to reinforce some affirmations that give kids permission to be “imperfect.”

Some of my favorites are: “Just practice doing your personal best, nothing more and nothing less.” This teaches your child that if they are doing the best that they can, the outcome is not important.

Carol Juergensen Sheets

“Progress, not perfection.” This reinforces that the guiding principle is to look for the small and consistent changes and not necessarily the big jumps. “What did I learn, that I can affirm?” This teaches kids that they should always look for a way to grow and even problems or obstacles are a way to gain knowledge and wisdom about a situation. When you teach these principles to your children, it gives them permission to step out of themselves and view their lives with more objectivity and to see themselves as a “work in process.” This of course means that as their parent you need to practice the same beliefs and role model how you choose to be kind and gentle to yourself. The last strategy to share with them is mindfulness. Great ideas come when you give your brain 2-3 minutes to decompress per day. When kids spend 2 minutes each day in quiet thought, they will be clearing their mind of the clutter and give the brain some quiet space to get in touch with what life, God, or the Universe wants them to do in their life. Meditation is a valuable tool to accessing one’s higher calling even if it is as simple as being kind to a fellow student. Practice these principles with your kids and watch their confidence and serenity grow! Because we all know that “where focus goes, energy flows.”
